Happy New Year

Dear Thehelpfulone,
I just wanted to wish you and your family a happy new year, however you're celebrating it. Whether 2008 was a good year for you, or if it wasn't the greatest year, hopefully 2009 will be better. Cheers, and happy editing in 2009 :-),

Happy New Year!
Hey there, Thehelpfulone/Archive! Happy new Gregorian year. All the best for the new year, both towards you and your family and friends too. I know that I am the only person lonely enough to be running this thing as the new year is ushered in, but meh, what are you going to do. I like to keep my templated messages in a satisfactorily melancholy tone. ;)

Congratulations to Coren, Wizardman, Vassyana, Carcharoth, Jayvdb, Casliber, Risker, Roger Davies, Cool Hand Luke and Rlevse, who were all appointed to the Arbitration Committee after the ArbCom elections. I am sure I am but a voice of many when I say I trust the aforementioned users to improve the committee, each in their own way, as listed within their respective election statements. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to update the 2009 article, heh.

Best wishes, neuro(talk) 01:01, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unprotection request

Please unprotect Portal:Contents/Lists of basic topics.

I plan to rename the page to Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge (because the pages listed on the page were renamed 3 months ago - they are outlines and part of the outline of knowledge we've been constructing). "Lists of basic topics" no longer applies. The page shouldn't be protected anyways.

IMPORTANT: The rename might inspire some comments or questions, and I'd like those directed at me, so please leave the renaming to me so I show up as the contact in the move log and edit history.

Thank you man,

The Transhumanist 01:23, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh crap!

I'm in the process of renaming the subpages, but I only have 13 minutes of computer access left (I'm at the library).

Help!

Please rename the subpages to match the page I moved.

I'll rename as many as I can in the next 12 minutes.

Do you know why H5+R1A (talk · contribs) is editing your User page?

I'm trying to figure out what is going on with this user and 2 others, all of whom seem to be the same editor - see [1] - I've blocked one of them for continual removal of sourced text. dougweller (talk) 22:41, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And here is the answer, you blocked This user is a member of H (Subclade 5) and R1A (talk · contribs) [2]. 4 other socks of this user have been blocked. dougweller (talk) 18:36, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Joseph Stalin

I request that the article on Joseph Stalin be unprotected. The article was protected from editing to force two edit-warring editors to resolve their dispute on the talk page, but nothing talks between the two have occurred. Might as well unprotect it so it can get back to being worked on.Kurzon (talk) 20:36, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Houston, we have a problem...

I need rescue assistance.

One of the pieces of the outline of knowledge has been nominated for deletion: Topic outline of Big Science.

To save it from deletion, it needs reference citations.

To save it from merging, it needs expansion (more links!).

What we need are references that connect the topics listed on that page with big science. See the nominator's complaints at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Topic outline of Big Science and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Big Science.

We also need to finish the outline (it's still under construction).

Please refrain from participating in the deletion discussion, except to point out any work you've done on the article as part of this rescue operation. I don't wish to be accused of canvassing - I simply want help fixing the outline.

FlaggedRevs point of order

I noticed the comments from your oppose, and thought I'd balance it by saying that my recent low activity is mostly caused by the lack of something like FlaggedRevs, and that I will probably retire if the community won't at least try it. I'm just not very vocal about my plans to leave this place! Anyway, hope the admin buttons are working out for you. Fritzpoll (talk) 10:14, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there!
Do you have a list of the pages that I could use somewhere to load easily in AWB? Currently on the Portal and Wikipedia: page I seem unable to do that!
Thanks,
The Helpful One 00:29, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'll make a wiki power user out of you yet...  :)
Have you tried AWB's list filter feature? You can target lists more specifically by using the filter to remove pages from the list (or to keep pages on there) by namespace, search string, etc.
If that doesn't do it for you, then...
You can combine subpages in a sandbox using substitution, by grabbing the subpages of Portal Contents using the special page, and then editing the links in an editor like Word to get this:
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/Culture and the arts<br>
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/Geography and places}}<br>
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/Health and fitness}}<br>
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/History and events}}<br>
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/Mathematics and logic}}<br>
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/Natural and physical sciences}}<br>
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/People and self}}<br>
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/Philosophy and thinking}}<br>
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/Religion and belief systems}}<br>
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/Society and social sciences}}<br>
{{subst:Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge/Technology and applied sciences}}<br>
Then just paste it into your sandbox (such as User:Thehelpfulone/List of outlines), save the page, edit the resulting list to your satisfaction, save it again, plug it into AWB, and...
voila!

Stuart Campbell

Hi, you just recently protected the page of Stuart Campbell due to edit warring. I agree that the protection is justified but I kindly ask for you to put a COI tag on the article. It was on until just recently where one of the editors involved in the dispute took it down claiming no evidence has been demonstrated for a COI. In fact, it's easy to see at the article's talk page that there are multiple conflicts of interest, not to mention the absurd discussion over at COIN where "Stuart Campbell" himself showed up at a very opportune moment. This tag will warn any readers of the conflict of interest, which is important as we don't know the motivations of all the SPAs editing the article. Re: WikiCup Newsletter

There's an open tag at the end of the newsletter, making all text after it appear in a curly font. A </font> tag needs to be placed at the very end of the message, as I have done on my talk page. Gary King (talk) 00:31, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

CIA World Factbook demographic statistics

Demographics of Morocco, Data of FAO, year 2005 ; Number of inhabitants in thousands.

The following demographic statistics are from the CIA World Factbook.

(end of example)

Note that many of the pages have an image, and that the image needs to be retained. The image included here is provided as an example only.

I've added the heading and lead to the demographics articles up through Rwanda. I need you to finish off the rest on User:Thehelpfulone/Country demographics articles.

I look forward to your reply.

The Transhumanist 21:44, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: the next chore will be you and me trying to figure out how to use regex. That will fill a serious hole in our power tool boxes.  :)

In this example, instead of wiki-linking CIA World Factbook, the sourcing sentence should link to the specific country in the CIA World Factbook (and better still to the "People" section in that country). In that way readers will be able to verify the numbers for themselves (or even update them). See, e.g., Demographics of Armenia. --Zlerman (talk) 02:38, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We generally use internal links (to Wikipedia articles) within article prose. External links are best in external link sections

RE: More work!

Hi there!

I guess I'm backlogged, if you could create the page for me to do the search/replace task for AWB, I'll whiz through that and then start on the next task -> could you give me an example of what I need to do for the second task?

Thanks,

The Helpful One 21:47, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime." - Ancient proverb.  :)
I provided you with step-by-step instructions above. What is the problem you are having? Cut and paste the list up there into the redlink provided, and you are ready to rock and roll.
For the second task, see any of the pages with CIA statistics on them up through Rwanda. Scratch that, look at Demographics of Rwanda.
I've copied the text you need to add to each article to User:Thehelpfulone/WFB heading and lead.
Copy and paste it from that page to the top of the CIA statistics, replacing whatever heading is there. For example, if the stats are under the heading "Population", get rid of that heading.
Here's a diff of a change I just made: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Demographics_of_Tunisia&diff=263911333&oldid=258668979
Be sure to retain the heading level. If the heading you are replacing has three equals signs, you need to make sure the new heading has 3 equals signs. Most have 2, and so the text I provided has 2.
By the way, the server I'm on takes minutes to load each page, and so finding a page to create that diff above took me over fifteen minutes minutes! So, in the future, please let me know what instructions you didn't understand, so we can work the bugs out of our communication style. OK?
The Transhumanist 22:51, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! I've created the page, but there's a problem with Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge as I can't seem to get the links on page with AWB. There's one link that is a problem, which means that it won't retrieve the list, do you know of a way to do this without using AWB to obtain the page list? The Helpful One 22:31, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, OK, so I should copy and paste the links to the page that you have created for me at User:Thehelpfulone/List of outlines? The Helpful One 22:53, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but I hope you understand what we just did (it's called "substitution"), because it is a very powerful wikiskill that you can make use of in the future.  ;) Having a wordprocessor sitting in another window is also very useful for converting lists with search/replace operations.
By the way, is AWB still choking?
The Transhumanist 23:05, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, AWB is still choking I think. I'm off to sleep now, but I know all about wiki stuff, and I've used substitution a lot! I used it on my 8th day of Wikipedia! :D In regards to regex, I won't be able to master it, but I have people on IRC who can provide us with the code for it - regex gurus! The Helpful One 23:07, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nighyt night.  :)
The next time you log on, please describe the choke. Is AWB loading only part of the list, or none of it?
The Transhumanist 23:12, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
None of it, there's a problem with one of the links with no title, or something odd like that so it just shows up with a blank error message when I try to load the page, and then once I click OK, nothing happens, now I'm off! :) The Helpful One 23:13, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've cleaned up the list, so it should work now. The Transhumanist 23:52, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm here to ask you to reconsider your decision at WP:RFPP. I know it is a highly transcluded template and I know I could put a copy in a sandbox and use editprotected. But can we just use a some perspective here? It is highly unlikely that vandalism would occur on this page if it is semiprotected for a few days. And it would make life a lot easier for me. I recently did the same job on Template:WikiProject Television without any problems. Best wishes, Martin 00:22, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Yoga Article

Dear Thehelpful one,

I am contacting you because I hope you may be able to help me. I would like help adding a new article about Advanced Yoga Practices. I added a notice to the Draw page here[[4]].

I have not heard back so I thought I would go ahead and try adding the article myself. I have looked through the help pages and tutorial but am a bit confused to be honest. I decided to ask someone who has experience for help, hence this post. The subject matter is a system of yoga and its founder is American, however I am in the UK, so looked for editors under the European section.

I would welcome any comments and help writing this article please, especially referencing and citations. If I put a request for an article in the request pages, do you consider it likely to be added?

Many thanks Waitandsee (talk) 14:07, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

User:MTO Poster

You blocked this editor for sockpuppetry and s/he is requesting an unblock. The unblock request seems plausible, and looking at the timestamps, I'd say it is even likely truthful. I'm tempted to extend a bit of good faith, reduce the block from indefinite, and maybe even remove it all together (time served for edit warring). I'd appreciate your thoughts on User talk:MTO Poster. Thanks, - auburnpilot talk 18:55, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The more I looked into it, the less willing I was to unblock. Edit warring, legal threats, and a clear conflict of interest do not inspire confidence. Consider my suggestion for an unblock retracted. Best, - auburnpilot talk 19:27, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
