Technical news

  • When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
  • Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
  • The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

Technical news

  • A recent query shows that only 16% of administrators on the English Wikipedia have enabled two-factor authentication. If you haven't already enabled it please consider doing so.
  • Cookie blocks should be deployed to the English Wikipedia soon. This will extend the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user after they switch accounts under a new IP.
  • A bot will now automatically place a protection template on protected pages when admins forget to do so.

I need a reason to be given

IP address user 80.0.56.242[1] is putting in useless sections about Amusement Arcade UK history on video game articles[2]. Why is this being allowed?? How is this important??? What does this do for the pages???? There needs to be some very good reasons for this since my undo's were reverted.108.82.14.68 (talk) 23:34, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

I think you should search this up yourself because frankly your making your maintenance and control staff seem very ignorant by allowing incorrect figures to be put clearly on an article without a reference. The figure '30 million' does not have a reference. As there are lots of football fans, we obviously want to correct this incorrect and false information and when we did we are labelled as vandalises. This quite frankly is disgusting and you should really stop being a lazy shit and search this up yourself and to stop continued embarrassment for your staff...

Can you tell *Treker to leave me alone

  • I made a simple edit on the Born wiki page[3], correcting a link, "The Platoon" goes to Garth Ennis page, but user *Treker reverted it and because I put it back, user *Treker feels the need to keep leaving messages on my talk page, but I have nothing to talk about with this user. I made that clear in the Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes). If he/she wants the links to be incorrect, because he/she can't admit there wrong about something as simple as this, then fine, but he/she can so without harassing myself or anyone else.TheHeronGuard (talk) 00:55, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
  • @TheHeronGuard: Editors are obligated to discuss their differences of opinion regarding content. See WP:Consensus. You also need to understand that discussion does not take place in edit summaries. Your repeated insistence on your version of the content without determining consensus is known as edit warring (see WP:Edit warring). Please take more care in your editing so that you do not jeopardize the privilege. Tiderolls 01:54, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
You have nothing to talk to anyone about apparently because you remove everything anyone ever posted there and cry harassment to me despite the fact that all I did was question your reasonings, the talkpage is there for people to talk to you, how is anyone supposed to do that when you just remove evrything without responding?★Trekker (talk) 02:12, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
Also, the link is NOT "incorrect" it's a redirect. There is nothing wrong with it, and for an upcoming product it's convenient for when the product comes out and the redirect can be turned into an article. So you avoid having to go around fixing all of them.★Trekker (talk) 02:24, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
  • The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
  • An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
  • After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.

Technical news

  • After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
  • Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.

In deepest gratitude

Many thanks for this essential information, of which I was for inexplicable reasons unaware. Only four hours left to do my duty. Shock Brigade Harvester Boris (talk) 00:44, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

Apologies, but I'm not sure how to interpret your message. Tiderolls 15:14, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Deleting a section because it's empty

IP address users 80.1.181.122[4] and 80.2.151.245[5] (could be the same person) keeps deleting an empty section on the Scarlett (G.I. Joe) page[6] and on other pages simple because it's an empty section that hasn't been filled in yet. But there are dozens of empty sections all across wikipedia, that doesn't mean they should be removed. If this person feels so strongly about that then they should take it to the Talk page.108.82.12.10 (talk) 15:03, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Discussion is almost always the path to take. You may want to approach the editor and explain your concerns. Tiderolls 15:16, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Buccaneer008

Do you mind if I unblock User:Buccaneer008, or at least reduce the block to a month or whatever's normal for a first block for low-level sockpuppetry? I'm just concerned about an initial indef block for someone who's been around for a while and made over 500 edits; aside from egregious stuff like outing, or blatantly NOTHERE stuff like using your first edits to put an advertisement on your userpage, I'm uncomfortable with a first block being indefinite. Nyttend (talk) 19:57, 22 April 2017 (UTC)

@Nyttend: Thanks for the consideration. I agree that there are more serious issues that would warrant an indef block. However, this individual had been warned, more than once, and never attempted discussion. To me, any other period would've been punitive. Having said that I would almost never oppose a second chance. As long as you make plain the circumstances I am ok with your proceeding with an unblock. Tiderolls 22:27, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
