The Doc[edit]

I've heard that story before, or one very like it, and the fact that the precise match is identified - unusual with such stories - suggests that it may be genuine. However, a quick look in Rae's biography didn't produce a mention of it. I couldn't find the match on CricketArchive, but that's not conclusive if it wasn't a f-c fixture. (The immediately preceding story in our article strikes me as being even more dubious. That story has been told about Grace, but I think it's also been attributed to other cricketers (Thornton?), and I doubt that it's genuine. Thanks. I already have an online copy of the Memorial Biography. I at one time put a tribute by AA Thomson in the lead, but someone (I can't recall who) replaced it by the CLR James one. When I protested at this having been done without prior consultation, their response was to the effect that since James was a more significant figure than Thomson his tribute was to be preferred. Simon Rae's biography of Grace quotes (p395) the Bishop of Hereford as saying in 1895 that if Grace has been "born an ancient Greek... the Iliad would have been something different. They would have heard not only of Ajax and Diomed, but they would have been adding a third name - that of a hero who would have had the pleasure of killing a great number of people and of being sung in immortal verse! If he had been born in the Middle Ages, Dr Grace would have been a Crusader, of course, and would have been lying with his legs crossed in one of those niches in Bristol Cathedral." So whilst, like you, I am sure that the "national institution" remark long precedes James, it doesn't seem to have been the Bishop of Herford who said it, or Rae would surely have quoted that as well. Thanks for that, the 'myth' was there before I tidied the article (it had been copy vio'd from here I think (not particularly reliable though). As I couldn't find any RS either was, I left it, but have now changed it to "Some scorecards record it is "absent dead"" (or similar), and referenced it to the Lynch article. Are there any RS actually proving the "absent dead"? A decent ref would be nice. I don't think it crept into Wisden, although I may be wrong.

Also I was going to ask at WT:CRIC about the style guide for Pakistani cricketers (first name, second name) etc, but didn't get round to it. I bow to your knowledge!

Fingleton's cricket writings[edit]

Thanks for the little fixes. One thing I have noticed, my source claims that Ponsford broke Victor Trumper's record for the highest score in an interstate match. If Trumper held this record, what was the record held by Clem Hill (365) against New South Wales? Or is my source just flat wrong and Ponsford beat Hill's record? Hutton - Bedser trap[edit]

"After the day's play, former Australian Test leg spinner Bill O'Reilly and former teammate of Bradman, now a journalist, consulted Bedser on his use of leg theory. O'Reilly had much experience in attacking leg stump in his career and devised a plan to ensnare Bradman.[46]"

Do we have any other source for this that it was O'Reilly who suggested it ? The anthology The Joy of cricket contains a piece from a book by Alec Bedser. I don't remember what book it was but this four page chapter was titled Even Bradman had battles to fight and is about him bowling to Bradman. It does not contain a word about O'Reilly. Bedser said that they had noticed even in the 1946-7 tour that they could keep Bradman in check by bowling on a leg stump line. From what I remember, Bedser seemed to suggest that it was Norman Yardley and himself who planned it. It has been a decade since I last read it, so my memory could be faulty but it may be worth a check (Joy of cricket is a popular book). Tintin 04:45, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, a lot, because a lot of them cut and paste Fingleton all over the place, and Roland Perry's book of the tour is basically a rip-off of Fingo and then inflated to 3X the size with inane mumblings. The leg trap one is definitely in there but the article has now been changed to saw that O'Reilly help to refine the plan. Bedser of course already got Bradman with it once in 1946-47. Good to see you back again. All books have errors so you're needed. Even the Frith and Haigh book on Cricket Australia's archives published in 2007 has a few. Said that ENG/Aus declared at 8/68 and 8/32 in the Brisbane sticky of 1950-51, and that SRW's men won 7 in a row in WC99, they forgot about the tie....Fingo has a few, saying that Loxton debuted at OT when he played the previous season in Tests and a few others. Fingo seems a bit in the Roebuck mould, not too concerned with specific data. Each time Roebuck talks on radio he likes to be wishy-washy with the stats, especially in ODIs he likes being even more vague about the last game which was only three days ago. Indian Cricket (annual)[edit]

I'm not really sure that "let the reader guess" (as in your edit summary) is all that satisfactory, though. If I didn't know anything about the publication and came across that article for the first time, one of my immediate questions would be: "Why did publication cease in 2004?" Annuals don't just stop after over half a century for no reason. I do think we need, if at all possible, to add some sort of explanation: was there any sort of announcement made in The Hindu, or article noting the end of publication in any other Indian (or other) newspaper? Do you know others apart from Fingo, that can give details on the tour matches. Fingo barely talks about anything of the tour matchest, so those parts are mostly scorecard reading. WEre they really that dreadful. I've read in basically all Australian books of them giving Indians not out in the old days, caught at second slip. Or giving out Brian Booth in 64/65 when the wicket-keeper fuimbled the ball a few meters away and did a stumping with his fist??? WikiProject India Newsletter, Volume IV, Issue 2 – July 2009[edit]

Project news
A number of India-related articles have lost their featured article status, including Sikkim and Mumbai. The article about Gandhi was also demoted for referencing and image quality issues. Since then, Mumbai has been brought back to good article status, thanks to the efforts of Kensplanet and others.

Transport in India was promoted to good article status, thanks to the efforts of Rsrikanth05, SBC-YPR and GDibyendu.

It's certainly possible. I think that at this time the tea interval may have been 4:15 to 4:35, with close of play on the last day being at 5:30 plus the extra half hour till 6:00 if either side had a chance of winning. Also the standard playing hours were sometimes varied to allow an early finish on the last day if one team was playing the next day and had a long journey, but checking the Indians' itinerary that doesn't apply here. Also the time of the tea interval sometimes varied. Such variations would be more likely in a "friendly" fixture like this than in a Championship match.

The relevant part of the match report in the 1972 Wisden says: "Left to make 182 to win in two and a quarter hours, Baig alone for India seemed to appreciate the possibility of knocking off the runs at a rate of nearly five an over." JH (talk page) 08:56, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

About Test Cricket Bowling Cricket Records[edit]

If you are a fan of cricket then you know how difficult it is to sum up even important facts and records (leave aside all records) related to Test Cricket in a single page. A single page can't do justice to team records as well as individual records, batting records as well as bowling records and fielding records, captaincy records, wicket-keeping records etc and the list goes on. So I just want to dedicate one single page to bowling records, one single page to batting records and so on... U can see for yourself that the bowling record section on the current record page doesn't even mention these important facts.

  • Most Career Wicket - Progression of Record
  • Most No. of 5 wickets/innings
  • Most No. of 10 wickets/match
  • Most No. of maiden overs in career
  • Most No. of duck dismissals by a bowler
  • Most No. of wickets through caught & bowled, stumped, LBW, etc.
  • Facts related to hat-tricks

Bodyline[edit]

My memory is of reading that Jardine enlisted Arthur Carr, captain of Notts and ex-England captain, as an ally during the summer of 1932, and that Carr tried out Bodyline in some of Notts' matches late in the 1932 season. I don't think that Bowes would have used it. John Arlott says that he saw the final day's play of the Essex v Nottinghamshire match at Leyton on 5th August. When Carr declared, Essex were set 298 in four hours. For Larwood's third over, "Instead of going into slips, the close fieldsmen took up places on the leg side. I turned to my companion in surprise... 'Good Lord, he's going to bounce them round his ears.'" It was a placid pitch, and the tactic was unsuccessful. "Larwood had bowled all but his first two overs to a leg-side field, and taken no wickets for 43 runs in 16 overs." Voce apparently did not try Bodyline. "Notts then had a sequence of five matchers in the North but, three weeks later, on 24, 25 and 26 August, they played Glamorgan at Cardiff. My curiosity led me to that game, Maurice Turnbull... proceeded to hook Larwood's leg-attack with an imperious power, heady to watch and, for me, conclusive proof that this bowling was a waste of time." "Aelott on Cricket"", edited by David Rayvern Allen, Fontana/Collins, 1985, pp192-3. I imagine that the tactic was so much more effective in Australia partly by being subsequently refined, but mainly because Australian pitches tended to be quicker and bouncier. Rereading that bit of the article that you quoted:

  • I didn't think that Bodyline was used in 1931 as well as 1932.
  • Judging by what Arlott writes, it was far from perfected before the ship sailed, and opposing sides were hardly terrorised. Notts' Championship finishes, 4th in 1931 and 5th in 1932, were no better than might have been expected when they had two such good fast bowlers. After all, they had won the Championship in 1929 without using Bodyline.
  • In the matches that Arlott watched, Voce apparently did not bowl Bodyline.

I've now looked in my copy of Swanton's "Sort of a Cricket Person" (pp65-67), which gives a very different impression to Arlott's pece. Swanton says: "The first signs of what came to be known as Bodyline were to be observed, probably, around 1930 when... Harold Larwood and Bill Voce were sometimes spurred on by their captain, A.W. Carr, to drop the ball short and make it fly around the ears of county batsmen... With Carr's active encouragement the Notts fast bowling was inclined occasionally, shall I say, to become a little 'rough'." (p65) A bit later on: "In the summer of 1932 the Notts bowling had elicited a few more grumbles, as had that of Bill Bowes for Yorkshire. I recall watching him bowling at the end of August... He let go some fast bouncers at the Hampshire captain, Lord Tennyson, who (then aged 42) was not amused... A more significant protest had been made earlier in the month at the Oval... Bowes bowled short and fast at Jack Hobbs, who protested both on the field and in print." (p67) The one thing that isn't clear is to what extent a "bodyline" field was employed, but apart from that caveat it seems that what the Bodyline article says is probably justified. Lumpy[edit]

Hi, Tintin. That's a very good question and I'm 90% certain that it was an arrangement which changed with the 1774 Laws. If memory serves, under the 1744 code, I think the toss decided both choice of innings and location of pitch but I'm almost sure that in 1774 they changed it so that the senior bowler on the visiting team chose the pitch. If it was a neutral ground, I suppose the toss decided it as before but I'm really not sure about that one because they might have let the umpires decide. It certainly did change at some point so that the umpires decided but I think that was in the 19th century, much later. I'm sure I've got something about this in one of my books so I'll have a look through and get back to you.

I'll reword the piece in the Lumpy article.

I happened to spot this discussion. There's a useful piece that appears in Wisden on average about once a decade entiteled "Dates in Cricket History", originally written by Harry Altham. I looked it up in the 1965 edition, and on page 154 there's a bit on the toss:
  • 1744 - toss confers choice of pitch and innings
  • 1774 - away team has choive of pitch and innings
  • c1809 - umpires choose pitch, toss confers choice of innings

In the 1744 Code the winning of the toss gave not only the choice of innings but also of the pitch. In 1744 the visiting side had choice of both — on neutral grounds the toss was to decide — and it was not until early in the next century that the siting of the pitch was left to the umpires...
Until then the picking of the pitch "within 30 yards of a centre determined by the adversaries" was generally deputed to the best bowler...

Is it clear to the layman? Bradman wanted to use leg theory to stop them scoring and getting a lead before the rain came, else Yardley would have gotten 100 ahead, declared and let Australia chase a sticky. If he attacked there was a danger that Compton could have smashed the balls everywhere and wiped out the deficit. If England were in arrears on a sticky they couldn't have declared and could've been bowled out quickly. Hi Tintin. Use of nicknames is one of the main complaints I have about CricInfo. Another example is "Monkey" Hornby. The thing is that you read several books and become well acquainted with names like A N Hornby and R E Foster. Well, you're right, of course, and as the match is credited by Cricketarchive as being first-class then it ought to be part of the list. Much rather do that than get rid of DIK, who are part of folklore as well as the record books! (I always assumed that one of the functions of DIK was to reassure poor teams that they weren't in fact the worst ever.) Good to see you back here: hopefully more than just a fleeting visit? WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)[edit]

Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

English WikiProject News

After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.


What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.

The first meetup in Delhi on 22 September 2010.

Mumbai and Delhi held their first meetups in September, where Wikimedia Board members Barry Newstead and Bishakha Datta met up with Wikipedians and other interested members of the public in these cities. A month later, Hyderabad also held its first meetup.

Arun Ram, Shiju Alex and Barry Newstead releasing the Wikimedia India community newsletter at the nineteenth Bangalore meetup on 24 September 2010.

Wikipedians in Bangalore continued their tradition of meeting up regularly at the Centre for Internet and Society, with the nineteenth meetup in September featuring Barry and Bishaka as attendees, and marking the release of the community newsletter. Along with Delhi and Mumbai, Bangalore is reported to be one of the three cities in contention for the Indian office of the Wikipedia Foundation.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales had an interaction with Wikipedians followed by a presentation to members of the public at the third Wikipedia meetup in Mumbai on October 31, 2010.

The first Wikimarathon, where Wikipedians and members of the public were encouraged to contribute to Wikimedia projects onsite, was held simultaneously at the meetups in Bangalore and Chennai on November 14, 2010. Wikipedians in Delhi also held a meetup the same day.

The Malayalam Wikipedia held several academies in different parts of Kerala over the past few months.

Wikimedia Foundation board member Bishakha Datta and Indian Wikipedian Srinivas Gunta co-authored a panel presentation at Wikimania 2010 on the Wikimedia Asia Project.

It is one of the few Indian grounds with FA potential - though theres a lot more work to be done, I ran into a brick wall looking for good refs for the history and pre 1973 matches section, they are limited. Iv used the Raiji&Dossa book as ref in a few places - however its best used minimum as its a CCI publication. Per WP:YESPOV it could be used but should not be the main ref in the article. The other one should be good as well - I cant find it on Google books though - guess you will be updating the article with that as ref when u get round to reading it. Its a panorama - some things have great number of refs (such as recent international matches), some recent things are not on record (atleast from my various searches). For eg. I am yet to find a ref for the new media centre built above the north stand for the Champions Trophy in 2006! One would have thought this should be well documented. I dont have the book either - I relied on google snippet previews for refs from that book. I thought it might be the case that the actual stadium takes up 75000 sy and the rest is used for the tennis/badminton/squash courts, swimming pool etc, was unsure thats why Iv dint change it. Obituary PRINCE VIJAYA OF VIZIANAGRAM, former Indian cricket test captain, died in Benares yesterday at the age of 59. He played in three tests for India, all against England in 1936, and was three times President of the Indian Cricket Control Board. He was elected to the Lower House of Parliament in 1960. Before independence he had been Minister of Justice in the Uttar government.

My name is Victor Grigas, and I'm a storyteller at the Wikimedia foundation. We're telling stories of Wikipedia users, editors, donors, programmers and staff to paint a picture of who uses Wikipedia - for the 2011 fundraiser.

I am in the process of planning a trip to India to gather stories from Indian Wikipedians in face-to-face interviews (possibly on video).

The page number mentioned is the same as some previous refs, so I wanted to double check the single wicket thing. As for the interzonal - the ref needs to state that it was the same tournament that was revived as Duleep trophy - since I cant get my hands on the raiji/dossa, I cant double check the page numbers. BCCI Lists[edit]

Recently, I moved 2 lists from the main Board of Control for Cricket in India article to their own articles - presidents and members as the BCCI article was too cluttered with the lists. Iv been trying to locate a reference for the list of presidents and their tenure, but Iv not come across anything thus far (not even on BCCI's own website). On the members list, Iv been trying to locate the year in which the affiliate acquired membership of the BCCI, again up a brick wall. Off hand, can you think of any good sources? I compiled the list initially by searching on the years and places of death on a player's CricketArchive article .. but that didn't give me everyone because I later found more cricketers in Wisden Obituaries, so there is bound to be more. LBW[edit]

I'm not sure how often you are on here these days. Anyway, I'm hoping to add a little more to Leg before wicket and maybe have a stab at FAC at some point. I've found a few academic articles on lbw statistical analysis and what that suggests, which I intend to add, but I wondered if you feel there is anything missing. For example, is there any mileage in adding some stats about most dismissals lbw, etc? Or is that too listy, or not really appropriate for FA? Any suggestions welcome. On the question of the 1744 laws, there is a mention of the same info in Barclay's World of Cricket, but given that one of the contributors to that book is Brodribb, it may be the same source!
