Your username[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I saw that you edited or created Philip Morris International, and I noticed that your username, "TobaccoControlGroup", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, service, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Foobar Museum of Art". However, you are permitted to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87".

Please also note that Wikipedia does not allow accounts to be shared by multiple people and that you may not advocate for or promote any company, group, organization, product, service, or website, regardless of your username. Please also read our paid editing policy and our conflict of interest guideline. If you are a single individual and are willing to contribute to Wikipedia in an unbiased manner, please request a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, choosing a username that complies with our username policy. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. Amlz (talk) 03:55, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

March 2021[edit]

Information icon Please do not add commentary, your own point of view, or your own personal analysis to Wikipedia articles, as you did to Tobacco industry playbook. Doing so violates Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy and breaches the formal tone expected in an encyclopedia. Thank you. Amlz (talk) 04:39, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

August 2021[edit]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing because of the following problems: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or web site, which is against the username policy.

You may request a change of name and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page.

I am just trying to return to Wikipedia after a long absence due to illness. I do not understand the reason for the block re: advertising and promotion as nothing I have posted has advertised or promoted any organisation, company or product. I understand that the name I have used is unacceptable as it implies that it represents an organisation, business, group or website - which it does not. I am an individual and my entries on Wikipedia are personal. TobaccoControlGroup (talk) 14:21, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328: As I explained in my message to you of 28th March, I think that your block was made in error as I have not posted anything that has advertised or promoted any organisation, company or product. I have not been paid for any contributions. I am a single individual. I tried to change my username which I now understand is unacceptable but was told that I could not do this until the reasons for the block had been addressed. But this is a difficult case to make as I believe the block was made in error TobaccoControlGroup (talk) 14:28, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You were warned in March, 2021 that your username was not acceptable but you continued editing until August, 2021 when I blocked you. Some of your edits pertained to the The University of Bath Tobacco Control Group. Your username is a violation of policy whether you are promoting or demeaning that group. It is deceptive and misleading in several ways. You need to file a formal unblock request that is fully responsive to the policy violations. Arguing that the block was in error will not be successful because the block aligns with policy, and is within my discretionary powers as an administrator.
