1. Should Emmanuelle Seigner, Sharon Stone, Jade Jagger, Elizabeth Hurley and Milla Jovovich have the template for modeling efforts. Strongest cases would be MJ who has the fmd link and EH who has returned to modeling.

I'm don't really feel that strongly, but I think Milla Jovovich yes for sure, the rest probably. If Sharon Stone never made it on when she was a model, and only later as an actress, then maybe not.

2. Is autocollapse working as intended for the template as a whole?

As far as I know, yes.

3. Is it possible to make the template recognize two parameters with a format such as ?

Yes, it is, but I think it's a bad idea. It would be ginormous when it gets opened. I always hate it when i click show and it's just overwhelming.

4. Do you want to create {{2010-2019VogueCovers}}?

Sure, maybe in a few days.

1. If I can do the 1990s for US next week can you find enough of the rest to go live with that template. (Chicago Public Library has microfilm. I was looking at bound volumes with missing pages last weekend.)

Probably not, this isn't my first area of interest and the rest will be much harder to track down because there aren't helpful lists. I suppose we'll have France (online archive), UK (online archive), and US (library). Maybe we could just have those three and comment out Italia until it gets built up more.

2. Do you know anything about pre 1987 vogue. I can not find the cover model in the table of content page. Where else would it be in the mag?

I don't know, I'm not super in favor of navboxes as you know, but I think that the world of glamour models/sexy fashion models and high fashion models are quite different. (At least for the last decade or so, before maybe not so much.) The girls that model for Prada don't have the boobs to do Sports Illustrated. I'm pretty sure that was four different covers. (Maybe there was a different girl put on the front in each one?) Even if Lily Donaldson is somewhat commercial looking, most of the girls aren't. Generally they're bony, sometimes terrifyingly so (I think about 115/120 lbs, 5'11" is typical), and many of their faces are pretty strange. (Think Daiane Conterato or Sasha Pivovarova.) It's quite the look, though. I don't think I'd trade my body for theirs, but the clothes certainly look better on them! Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:11, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
Selma Blair and Emily Mortimer are probably in a different league entirely because they're actresses rather than models. (They don't get on the cover of Vogue because they're beautiful and make the clothes look great, they get on the cover of Vogue because they're recognizable and will sell magazines and because they have a movie to promote.) Yes, "commercial" means conventionally good-looking. The distinction is enough that models.com ranks normal models[1] (think Armani ads and Pucci runways) separately from "sexy" models[2] (think Sports Illustrated and Victoria's Secret). letter from Bush

Tony - the photo of the letter left from Bush in the article Inauguration of Obama, seems out of context. Other than the caption, there is no relative text in the article. There is no sense of time when Obama looked at it. It is not part of the inaugural ceremonies. The only relevance is that the letter was left on the desk that day. I think the letter represents the "transition" and already is posted on the Presidential transition of Obama article as I stated in my reason for deletion. Thanks. I've fixed the redirect links now; the only one that still gets flagged up with the FA tool is http://www.jstor.org/pss/1574334, which the tool claims needs a subscription, but it doesn't, so that'll be fine.

Re. infobox - I think 'construction' should be concrete and steel, thought I changed it before? maybe not. Do you agree? It does say, in the article, about the concrete being reinforced w/ steel. --  Chzz  ►  02:35, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

I was playing around with the maps...and suddenly this big red rectangle appeared :-o So; the problem is, that tiger map thing will only generate a GIF file, and WP:IUP says a map should be in SVG format; the GIF can't be converted to SVG because it doesn't have SVG info.

I wonder if this will be an issue for FA? I'm not sure.

I could save them as JPEGs but I don't see the point; they'd just be bigger and no better - if anything, they could loose some quality. Not that they're very good quality anyway.

Best bet would probably be to redraw them from scratch, but that'd take a little time.

Another option would be to source a map elsewhere, but these ones aren't bad, I think - they do show the information you want.

Let me know what you're thoughts are on it.

Good luck with it; I'll monitor for now, and !vote later. There's a few things I think need change, but don't know how, so I'll be interested to see the FAC critique process. One thing stands out - the pictures on the left, at the top of the sections. I think in 'planning' you'll have to remove one of the 2, and put it over on the Right. I expect pictures will be the biggest overall problem.

Featured sounds

Hi! The first thing to do is to decide how you wish to go about creating the sound. Are you going to record a performance by you and/or others? Make a field recording? Restore a pre-existing public domain work? Use research to find free-licenced recordings already of suitable quality? All of these use different equipment and skills.

The most important thing for self-recorded featured sound types is the microphone. A poor microphone will add a lot of noise and distortion to a recording, ruining the sound before you start. Luckily, good microphones are usually fairly reasonably priced.

The other thing that applies to all but field recordings (that is, bird song, crickets chirping, a cat meowing, jackhammer noises, a train passing by - anything from out there that might add to an article) is watching copyright. Nothing's quite so annoying as thinking you have an exciting new sound, then discovering that, because the underlying composition (or, if not self-recorded, performance) was still in copyright, it can't be used.

I suppose the best advice I can give you is to consider what type of thing you'd like to do - "sounds" is, after all, a pretty broad remit - then contact me and I'll try and give you some more advice. Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 01:48, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Hmm. The Lou Gehrig speech probably counts as copyrighted, unfortunately. The other two are a little ambiguous as well - does he count as acting as a member of the government or as a citizen on such occasions? Only in the former case are the speeches Public Domain.
Don't you just hate copyright? Luckily, there are some resources, for instance, Wikipedia:Media copyright questions can probably help sort out the status of the Obama speeches. Basically, the inauguration was a governmental event, and Obama became president during it - that's absolutely clear cut. But Obama's acceptance speech and convention speech were done at privately-hired convention centres, which means there's a small chance that they're considered to be copyrighted to Obama. They were, of course, for a governmental purpose, but I'm not sure whether they count as {{PD-USGov}}. So, basically, I'd like to have someone a bit more familiar with the intricacies of copyright law adjudicate on that first. Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 08:45, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Kobe Bryant

You do not think this article is too long? The Tim Duncan article is 66kb, Charles Barkley is 62kb, Magic Johnson 55kb, Oscar 35kb, Hakeem is 47kb, and Michael Jordan is 85kb. The Kobe Bryant article is already 72kb and contains an assortment of trivial information. I strongly disagree with its size and feel it can be made much more concise and potent. There's absolutely no rush on this now.

The story is, some time ago I spent a lot of time developing that article, and read up all about FA. I worked towards that ideal, looking at similar articles that were FA, reading FA guidelines etc.

I was away from wikipedia for some time, and upon my return I started to look at it again, and decided I wasn't being bold enough, and should just bung it in for FA. I think, now, this was somewhat naive - as I'd hoped it was close enough that reviewers would help get it up to the standard.

As it stands, I know a couple of areas where it falls short, thanks to the minimal feedback I did get, so I can happily address those issues - specifically, there's an unreferenced section, the demographics could have even more stats (apparently! but that's do-able), it needs an Economy section - I haven't looked into that yet, a couple of parts are too much like lists, some paragraphs are too short, and maybe some sections are too short.

So, really, I do know what needs doing.

Of course, any input would be very welcome. What I'd love is, for someone to actually help edit the damn thing! I think I've spent too much time working on it, and can no longer see the woods for the trees.

But, as I say, no deadline whatsoever; I won't forget about it, as I have a grim determination to get it to FA one day.

Re. Obama, I had a quick look at that yesterday as I saw you were working on it. I will have a proper look now, and see if I can contribute at all.

Inauguration of Barack Obama

One thing that strikes me as weak is, in the "Missteps in administering the oath"; "The administration of the oath included several missteps, although news accounts about the exact sequence of events varied. According to one report,..."

I understand why you've done it this way, but it doesn't make sense, when the address is available for us to listen to - one of the press reports is clearly wrong.

I think this is important, as it's certainly an aspect of the ceremony that readers will focus on; I would suggest making your own mind up, and running with the refs that back that up, or majority refs, or somesuch; it would be more 'encyclopaedic', if you see what I mean, to state the facts.

More comments - hope it might help, feel free to ignore it all!

According to WP:LEAD#Length, "as a general guideline", the lede should be 3 or 4 paras if the article is over 30,000 chars. This is over 50,000, so maybe lede should be bigger? (Very picky, but then again, FA is picky)

Similarly, they might suggest that the article and ToC is getting too large, and it needs to be split into Summary Style. Maybe. Just a comment.

"The inauguration of Barack Obama The above looks odd to me, because of the word "The" not being bold. As Inauguration is a verb, I think you could remove 'The', ie it could start off, "Inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States took place on..." ...which looks better, I think.

"With his inauguration as President of the United States, " Too repetitive, 'inauguration' for the 3rd time and US for the 2nd, Probably not necessary, just delete that phrase?

"The theme of the 56th inauguration " maybe "The theme of the ceremony" (again, to avoid repetition)

"The inauguration celebration began" maybe "The celebration began" (rep)

"Philadelphia, Pennsylvania" I think I'd prefer just "Philadelphia" because, to me (non-US) it looks like 2 places and is a bit confusing, and to US it'll be obvious. And the link clarifies it fully.

Re. train ride - maybe try to rework this to avoid repeating "train ride"

"the inaugural ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, an inaugural luncheon at ..." - would it be OK to just say "a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, a luncheon at..."? Or, if not, just the 2nd, ie "the inaugural ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, a luncheon at..."

(I know I'm going on about repetition, but if you can loose some of it, I think it would be better - those first 2 para's say 'inauguration' or 'inaugural' 11 times)

I haven't read the whole thing yet, but it looks like the lede doesn't summarize the whole article, just the inaug itself, nothing about attendance/viewership/international attention/fund raising?

Sorry, I'm really struggling to put all of that info into reasonably short paragraphs without it sounding awkward. Maybe the section needs expanding a bit; there are some interesting points regarding Lincolns trip, because there was all kinds of unrest at the time - but then that would be well off the point of this article. It might be worth finding out more about the citizens that went along. Anyway, the following is the best I've come up with, but I'm not happy with it; maybe it'll give you an idea how to phrase it, or something. I don't like the way it keeps switching around in time, but I can't see how to start it without mentioning O first, then Lincolns trip, then back to O. Past inperfect is awkward. Also para 2 says he arrived, then there's the bit about FAA and what he did during the tour, then back to the arrival...it's all over the place really. usually I can think of a way to write this stuff; maybe it's because it's 05:46AM. Sorry I can't do better; I could probably do it better tomorrow if it's still needed. Here is the attempt, which I won't put on the article, because I'm really not happy with it;

Activities began on January 17, 2009, with a tribute to Abraham Lincoln. On February 11, 1861 the sixteenth president, also from Illinois, had begun the first phase of his train tour in Springfield, Illinois, and had arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 21, 1861. In the second phase of the tour, Lincoln had traveled to inauguration in Washington, D.C. by chartered train, stopping at 70 places along the way.

After holding a town hall meeting with a few hundred supporters at the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, Obama reenacted this journey in the Georgia 300 presidential railroad car. Collecting Vice President-elect Biden at Wilmington, Delaware, they continued to Baltimore, Maryland, where Obama spoke to a crowd of around 40,000 people. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prohibited private planes, news helicopters, balloonists and others from flying near the airspace above the train route.

During the tour, Obama recited his trademark rejoinder "I love you back" in response to enthusiastic crowds. 41 American citizens participated in the journey and other inaugural events such as the parade, the swearing in and an inaugural ball - 16 invited citizens who had special stories, accompanied by their families.

Obama and Biden arrived at Union Station in Washington, D.C. at 7:00 p.m. EST.

I don't have strong feelings one way or the other. I have a greater tolerance than others, as a general matter, for the work-in-progress state of wikipedia. (Hence all the angry messages on my talk page about me "dumping" public domain content here...) I think they should be reasonably complete, or they're not that useful. On the other hand, if we put them out before they're perfect, other passers-by may be able to help us finish them. Not sure how the balancing comes out in the end. FoT revisited

Hiya,

As I get the chance, I'll be going over Fountain of Time. I've seen the comments in the A review, and will consider them.

If I have some thoughts, where should I post them? Here, or the talk page? I don't want to 'pollute' the A grade voting process with minor thoughts.

If I have ideas I can implement, I'll just go ahead and change it; feel free to change back etc.

One thought for now - in the leed, there's a couple of places where there are 2 references in a row. That's fine, but it would be neater to avoid it, if the 2 are not truly necessary. To an extent, this is a personal preference, but I've read somewhere that the leed doesn't even necessarily need references at all, if the facts are referenced in the body. I wouldn't go that far, but I'd avoid having 2 in a row - it would just look a bit cleaner.

Out of interest, I've just been playing around with the "wide image" and "panorama" templates; not altogether successful, but you might be interested to see User:Chzz/fountain.

I was trying to do the wide pic some justice, but I'm not convinced it works.

Oh - while I'm here, by the way...I don't think the "henceforth 'The Fountain'" thing works very well. I'll have a ponder about that.

I'm currently trying to re-word the 3rd para, about restoration; thoughts include;

  • Exposure to the elements necessitated repairs, but early attempts did more harm than good.
  • From 1990 until 2001, millions spent, efforts continue with lighting improvements
  • underwent corrective conservation
  • Over the years, weather has caused damage
  • The Fountain of Time has suffered the ravages of time ironically
  • The statue itself has suffered the ravages of time, and early attempts at repair did more harm than good.
  • In an appropriate irony,

Just thoughts. I'll keep you posted.

VS fashion show template

Oh no, I'm not offended, I just don't agree with you. :) Yes, the Victoria's Secret fashion show is widely publicized. But I think the coverage of shows like Chanel in secondary sources is greater. Those shows are fodder for fashion magazines and fashion journalists in newspapers year-round. I gave Chanel couture as an example because (as of last year) there are only ten designers in the world that have couture presentations on-schedule in Paris,[4] and Chanel is a storied, respected fashion house. If you are in this fashion show, you are the creme de la creme among high fashion models. Maybe a better analogy is like winning an award for your novel versus being on the bestseller lists? In any event, I just think that there are too many important fashion shows to start creating navboxes for them all. I really really don't think that Victoria's Secret stands out enough to create a navbox for. (And don't we already have the angels navbox and the SI navbox for this type of model?) Sorry I can't lend my support for the VS navbox yet; I just think the angels box suffices. I may check out your FLC thing later. I never review featured lists, just because lists aren't interesting to me... so don't take it personally! Yes, fall fashion shows happen in the spring, and spring fashion shows happen in the fall. This is because they showcase clothing for the next season in time for buyers to place orders for retail stores. These shows happen throughout the year. Generally a house has a spring and a fall collection. Some houses have couture collections (one each for spring and fall). Most houses also have resort (winter, I guess) and pre-fall collections. These have previously not been publicized but now are getting more attention. These collections tend to be more commercial, while the other collections tend to be more conceptual. I may write articles on some fashion shows, but it would be kind of silly in my mind to divorce the concept of the fashion show from the article about the fashion house, because fashion shows are really just the way in which the house develops. Maybe individual fashion shows might merit articles. I did a lexis search and found 13 word doc pages' worth of news coverage (15 news articles) about just the last Chanel couture show. I'm currently transferring all eligible FPs to Commons and came across this image, which requests to keep a local copy. Any reason for this? Calling from Commons is preferable for a free-use image. Also, I had to manually enter the URL to edit this page because all of your good article graphics overlap the edit button above. Anything you could do about that? Cindy Crawford article and Vogue cover navigation templates

My reasoning was that the navigation templates are largely not about Crawford, they create a lot of clutter (especially if you think of the other magazines that could be added), and might be a misappropriation of navigation templates. Maybe this is a kind of quick and dirty list of Crawford's covers? There are better ways of adding this info. A separate list page wikilinked from the 'See Alsos' or from the article text would work very well. Diderot's dreams (talk) 21:04, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

I think the root of all this one term: 'supermodel'. Certain editors just really don't like it, They say it's not in the dictionary, it's not actually a word, and so it can't be a job title. I've been reversed for writing that Crawford is one, as well many anon editors that don't know it's not a word either. For a nonword, it seems a lot of people use it in everyday speech.
Really what you want to do is create is navigation template for supermodels, but you can't because it's not a word. Your goal of linking Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and other supermodels is a very good idea, and you can put the Vogue cover nav templates back if you like (FYI, there were three which is why I think they clutter things up, maybe you could skip the 2000's for Crawford?)
But I really think the thing to do is damn it all and make a Supermodel template, under Ignore All Rules, which definitely applies here, and other rationales. But I haven't seen the history of this, and of course it's got one.

First-person shooter

Hey hey Mr. Tiger,

I wondered if, with your knowledge of article catagories and suchlike, you might have advice for me.

I'm GA reviewing First-person shooter, and one issue is the infobox, which strikes me as somewhat 'non-standard' - or is it? Do other grouped articles have similar?

My feeling is, it might be better to create an infobox for these 'game genres' that has a picture of a typical example (ie, in this case, that freedoom screenshot) in the infobox, and loose that cartoon graphic.

Anyway, thanks in anticipation. Of course, any and all other comments would be very welcome - my latest 'round' of discussion is Talk:First-person_shooter/GA1#13_March.

Yes, I've been looking at that template. In your experience, do grouped articles use the infobox in the way the article currently does - i.e. to navigate the articles within the 'series', as it calls it? Or, would it be better if I modified the box and made it more similar to other infobox styles - i.e. listing the key features of the genre, if I can think of them. Maybe the sub-genre, the date of the first game, something like that? And change the pic to an example screenshot of typical game? --  Chzz  ►  21:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

John Beilein

I noticed that you restored a line which claimed that Michigan was in its final year of scholarship reductions when Beilein arrived. This is incorrect. It's true that originally, Michigan was supposed to lose one scholarship per year for four years, but the school successfully petitioned the NCAA to have all four lost scholarships retroactively applied to the 2001-02 team (which had only eight scholarship players as it was), arguing that its thin roster was already a consequence of the Martin scandal. ACC Basketball

The table I created on the talk page is based off the one from the Big 11. In response to your original request for a section on the tie-breaking procedures, I created that table and also C&P the tie breakers from the ACC. Through various edits, others felt the table and the C&P were unnecessary, and replaced it with a quick description of how the tie-breaking went down for this tournament. Really, I'm indifferent to how the information should be portrayed on the page. I like tables but I hate when a page is nothing but tables, as tournament pages tend to end up. If you feel that the table I created is warranted, add it back in by C&P'ing it from the talk page. Since I've added it once I don't want to start an edit war or anything.

Regarding the ACC-Big11 Challenge, I have no idea how they come up with the match-ups, but I do know they usually release the schedule for it in the summer.

Even though my Tigers sucked it up in this year's tournament, I hope we can make the tournament page and the season page into really concise articles. The ACC is the class of college basketball and our wikipedia pages should reflect that. Jober14 (talk) 23:38, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Michigan basketball scholarships

The source you added to the Beilein article (which is not an NCAA document; it is a study conducted by four professors with no connection to the situation) is incomplete and I am going to remove it. The sanction under which Michigan was supposed to lose one scholarship per year through 2007-08 was changed after the school petitioned to have the four lost scholarships retroactively applied to the 2001-02 team. I will try to find documentation but in the meantime you are going to have to take my word on this. Perspective Correction

G'day,

I noticed you submitted many images to peer review. Many of them are architectural images. Perspective correction is generally regarded as a good idea for architectural images. I'd do it to any that you think would pass FPC. Noodle snacks (talk) 23:37, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

    • Too much, (note that the light poles now flay outwards). That particular image needs level correction (so the horizon is flat) more than perspective correction.           • Adjusted the levels. The foreground lighting was dark compared to the sky and for an encyclopaedia the subject takes priority over the background. You can change it back if you'd like. More generally you'd shoot at the right time of day, or use photographic filters, or use exposure blending to achieve a good balance between the sky and subject.             • Yep, It'd be nice to have a rich blue sky, but the subject of the image takes precedence. I'd have probably tried to shoot the shadow with the sun behind me so it was clearer if possible. hehe... imdb might be reliable but not in this case... trust me Tony, I'm a victoria's secret fan and I have watched all the shows from 1999-2008 and there was no Thalita Oliveira or Heidi Klum at 2006's show: By that time Heidi was PREGNANT! She couldn't have walked that year's show for sure! ;-)

Scandal

What is your obsession with using the pompous, uncommon title "University of Michigan basketball scandal"? First, pretty much everyone not named yourself calls it the "Ed Martin scandal." Second, the scandal is largely incidental to John Beilein's tenure and doesn't need a grand link title. Leave it alone. Removed Image

  • Ah I see.. Just double-checked your recent edits on the Kobe Bryant article and I believe you incorrectly labeled those images..

1st: Bryant and Baron Davis have never played each other in a playoff series so your title on the mutliple image "Images from 2008 NBA Playoffs" is incorrect.

    • I think you are missing the point. The majority of the pictures are dead actions shot (the clock is stopped). There is one of him on defense where the clock may be live. Other than that there are only two live action shot of him in the field of play plus one of him jumping out of bounds. One shows him shooting and the other shows him dribbling and it is the only image of him with his tongue wagging.   • Bruce Bowen is an All-Defensive 1st Team memeber in the 2007-08 Season along with Bryant, and the Lakers played them in the WCF. Also there's enough images with Bryant in a away Lakers jersey. This image is better. JoeJohnson2 (talk) 08:25, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
    • Bowen still counts as a 37 guy who has never been an All-Star and Davis is a 29 year old guy who has been an All-star and All-NBA player multiple times. There is plenty of room for both pics though. In truth the bad picture is the one of the five guys standing that is out of focus. That would be the one I would remove. I would probably keep both the Bowen and the Davis and ditch the one that is out of focus. Why do you want an out of focus pic when you have such good sharp pics?     • Sorry but the Finals Image needs to stay, every image has a purpose and that Baron Davis image does not fit. Baron Davis has not been an All-Star since the 2003-04 NBA Season, while Bowen has been the primary defender against Bryant for 5 playoff series. The Baron Davis image serves no purpose and is a waste of space in the article.

And about this image being from the same day as that other image, well look at those images with Kobe in a #8 jersey, both images were from a Bucks game at the same day. JoeJohnson2 (talk) 08:41, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

      • I'm sorry, but I think I am missing something. You don't want to have any pictures in the article of Bryant opposing a former All-star? Davis is certainly a much higher caliber player than Bowen although I don't follow the ins and outs of series. I could support the inclusion of Bowen because experts of the game would recognize Bowen as a five series primary defender. However, the less attentive fan such as myself sees Bowen as a non-All star who likely will forever be a non-All-star. Until you find pics of Bryant against other All-stars in sharp focus with the tongue wagging, Davis' image certainly serves a purpose. How many people that read the page do you think know Bowen as an All-defensive player. His own WP bio does not even mention it. How many people recognize Davis as a former All-Star and All-NBA player.           • They are waiting for an inbounds in all likelihood. That is not an action shot. There is no tongue-wagging signifying that anyone is about to get G'ed up. When basketball players tongues start wagging it means nasty stuff is going to happen. You need an tongue wagging action shot against an All-star. Not an out-of-focus shot awaiting an inbounds pass against one. Granted Redd might be at a higher level today than even Davis, however. That makes sense about getting it up and running. Do you know of any templates I can use where the data/info is automatically filled in when displayed on a page I were to create? I found the conference standings template which helped out a lot, but had to manually make a roster table on the 08-09 UConn Huskies page, which took me awhile. If you know of any pre-made templates that automatically fill stuff in (AP rankings, game results, etc.), they would help out a lot.
