WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader (Irish Citizen Army Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

  • United States Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
  • Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
  • Chicago HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of British Empire The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

Audio of "I Have A Dream"

You uploaded File:I Have A Dream sample.ogg a while back. Is there a reason that it ends in mid-phrase? I don't know how to crop the audio myself, but it seems like it would make more sense to end it around 25 seconds than the current 30 seconds. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 03:03, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

I'll await further feedback, but I think it would still be mid-phrase if edited as suggested. I don't think it would be an improvement to shorten it. Actually, my talk is not that widely watched. Alley oop shots

Nice work, it sure beats a single picture. If you're still in the mood to tinker, you might consider touching up the lighting; the last three shots are hard to see due to the dark back drop. Online Ambassador Request

Hello,

There is a class at Illinois State University in Bloomington, Normal, IL that needs an Online Ambassador. Would you be interested in working with the class? There are about 15 students in the class but the Wikipedia assignment is optional so all of the students will not be working on creating an article. I'm still working with the instructor/Campus Ambassador to get them set up with a course page, etc. They are both new to Wikipedia so they could use your help with helping the students. The project is due April 12 and the students are tasked with adding a minimum of 3 sections to an existing article and/or adding a minimum of 8 sources. The name of the course is Children in Global Perspective

Also, the Campus Ambassador is going to be talking with the class this Thursday, Feb 7 at 2:30 PM CST so if you happen to be available to participate in anyway during the class session. I'm sure the instructor and the Campus Ambassador will really appreciate it.

Look Mickey is a 1961 oil on canvas painting by Roy Lichtenstein. Based on an illustration showing Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck during a fishing mishap, it is widely regarded as the bridge between his abstract expressionism and pop art works. It is notable for its ironic humor and aesthetic value as well as being the first example of the artist's employment of Ben-Day dots, speech balloons and comic imagery as a source for a painting. Building on his late 1950s drawings of comic strips characters, Look Mickey marks Lichtenstein's first full employment of painterly techniques to reproduce almost faithful representations of pop culture and so satirize and comment upon the then developing process of mass production of visual imagery. In this, Lichtenstein pioneered a motif that became influential not only in 1960s Pop art but continuing to the work of artists today. The work dates from Lichtenstein's first solo exhibition, and is regarded by art critics as revolutionary both as a progression of pop art and as a work of modern art in general. I believe you inadvertently gave me a WP:3RR warning. A look at the edit history of Carly Foulkes shows that I have not come close to reverting three times in 24 hours. I commented on his page as well, Tony. He's beena little heavy-handed here, likely due to a little inexperience with these situations. I don't think furhter steps are necessary, unless NEE fails to learn from this and does something like it again.

My bold edit was to test the waters, as no further discussion on a topic I felt important was occurring. Hopefully, my concerns will get addressed. Maybe an RfC would be helpful, bringing in further opinion. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 02:49, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Hoffmann Barcarole

The name of the piece is "Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour", which should certainly be the name of any future article. Personally, I prefer the Doll's Song, though, but then, I've recently heard an amazing rendition. But... *sigh* you cannae outreach unless you have something to offer, and all the bullshit around featured sounds has screwed that up for at least another year, so unless it's a solo song for baritone or bass, don't ask me.

As for it as a solo article... Genuinely not sure. It's a popular piece, but I'm not sure it's the kind of popularity that would reasonably stretch beyond the paragraph it has in the opera article, unless you can find musical analysis of changes made to it between Die Rheinnixen and Les contes d'Hoffmann. University of Michigan Olympians

Tony, do you have any interest in creating a List of University of Michigan Olympians? It would parallel similar lists for the University of Florida, Princeton and other major university contributors of Olympic athletes. Good references are available, and I'm happy to point the way for you or anyone else who wants to create this list, including a roster of swimmers, sources, etc. There is a partial list included in List of University of Michigan sporting alumni, but it's not even close to complete. Comedy of Errors Template

Hey, I've undone your edits on the template. The two references I added are vital to study of the play; ask any Shakespearean. The play is one of only two Shakespearean plays which maintains the classical unities, and the fact that it does so is often used to help date it. The Epistle to the Ephesians is references multiple times in the play is usually cited as a source. I don't know how you can consider these topics not relevant. And you keep on saying that Angoor (2013 film) is valid, but there is no such thing as Angoor (2013), the link is a redirect to a page that doesn't even mention the film!
