Featured list

Thanks for you recent message regarding List of recordings preserved in the United States National Recording Registry's recently failed attempt for Featured list status. The reason why I close the discussion was that 17 days had elapsed, and the list had still not gathered *any* support votes beyonf the original nomination. When a list fails to attract the rqeuired four support votes within ten days, then an additional period of time isgiven to the list to see whether it can attract more support. After a week and no more support, I felt that the nomination should be closed.

I apreciate you have a put a *lot* of work into this article since it was nominated (see diff). I reccomend you go through the comments made and make absolutly sure they are addressed, and also check against WP:FLC for good measure. I think it's a high quality list that definately could be of FL quality before long.

With regard to "not closing the discussion"... FL discussions aren't closed as such - they are just put in the relevant log file. I personally feel that discussions should be closed off in a manner similar to AfD, so that the closing editor can give a clear reason for their actions.

Lastly, please don't be put off by a failed nomination... you describe me as an "expert", but I've had at least half a dozen failed nominations to date.

I concur with Tompw. Closing as a failure was probably warranted considering the state of the discussion at the time. I still think there are improvements to be done (now that I look at it the way the images are formatted/placed is far from ideal, I think), and I'll see tomorrow if I can work on it.Circeus 21:54, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Martial arts

Hey Tony, a friendly request. Since you seem to be a martial arts expert, do you know any good places around Hyde Park where I can take classes? I've walked by Fitzgerald's Martial Arts on 55th many times but he seems to only teach children, or at least I only ever see kids there. Washington Park photos

Sorry I haven't been around much, I just moved last weekend and am in the process of unpacking and dealing with getting utilities up and running, and I'm also going out of town on business this weekend. Coincidentally, I now live directly across the street from the DuSable Museum. As for swapping photos, I think the picture of the DuSable Museum would work well over at the neighborhood article, as well as the the distance shot of the Taft sculpture. By the way, I'm not sure if you've been by there lately, but they took down that ugly chainlink fence that was up around the Taft and cut out the grass/weeds, so it might be worthwhile to get a new photo. Stupid

First, we don't do these things by vote count (and if we did, the anon wouldn't have counted). Second, "stupid" is indeed not a reason, but it seems to me that the person who said that was simply trying to make a joke and really meant "per the above". More importantly, though, "being mentioned" doesn't count as external coverage. What matters is if they actually said something about the site. For instance, the mention at Foodnetwork is just an address in a list of many. The mention in Pcmag is also just a link in a web directory. What we're looking for in sites such as these is external coverage. For instance, this page lists sites that cover Wikipedia in actual news articles, as opposed to this list which shows sites which merely mention us. HTH! >Radiant< 09:19, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Reason for wanting this particular name.

1. See my bio that is a linked attachment to my signature. I am a prominent martial artist. That is essentially my performing name or stage name. If the commercial release of my video CD is successful, I hope to be notable enough to have my bio unuserfied within 6 months.
2. I would be averse to surrendering this name. I would contest through every possible avenue before doing so.
3. I have been known by the name Tony, have attended junior high school, senior high school and college at schools with Tiger mascots.
4. As a prominent martial artist, the Tiger is a sacred animal to me. It represents stealth, grace, power, and ferocity.
5. I have built up a lot of human capital with 11000 good edits under this name. This week, I earned my first WP:FL, I anticipate within the next few days to have my first WP:FA.

Reading the page you cite, I believe the grounds you are contesting on would be applicable if my user name were Frosted Flakes. Not sure if it applies to Tony The Tiger.

I saw your recent FA proposal, I have an alternative that is simpler

The idea would be to chose a irrational number - say "pi" for example. Every day you move along the number, four digits at a time, until you get a number between 1 and c.1300 - that number is the featured article for tomorrow, which gives everyone time to clean it up

You then make a long list in alphabetical order including all the FAs, like this: 1 Abacus 2 Aborigine 3 Animal ..... 1298 Zulu This could be done with the # symbol. So every day, when new FAs are chosen they are added to the list in the proper place. This would continually shuffle the list, so although you could predict the number for a day months in advance - you could never predict the FA that would be in that position. This makes the process entirely transparent and fair.

That is the whole system. But if people want there can be a process for "override" say for the world cup or something, if a lot of users nominated it. If people are nervous that certain subject are over-represented in the FAs - then there can be a simple rule to precluded articles on the same subject being nominated within say a month of each other - but I don't see that as being necessary.

FA proposal

I understand your proposal. It is interesting. I have three problems with it.

1. What is your source for the infinite series of numbers in PI? I. E., when we are say 2800 places into the number how will we know what the next digits are?
2. Personally, I prefer a selective process over a random one. Recall that all articles can be evaluated on both a quality and a priority scale. (See for example the WP:BIO priority scale). For simplicity, let us assume that it is equally possible for low, mid, top, and high priority to achieve FA status. Should they all have equal chance to become TFAs? I think in a selective system, higher priority articles would have an advantage. I think this would serve to motivate people to spend more time cleaning up higher priority articles. Of course, if there were a scale for fan favorites, it might not exactly parallel the priority scale. However, it will be close. An article like Michael Jordan would based on its true priority level (Top) and fan favoriteness have an advantage over say George Washington Dixon. I think we should want a system places greater emphasis on higher priority articles if we truly believe they are higher priority articles. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 14:43, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

1. Pi (and all irrational numbers) have an infinate number of digits, we know pie to about 2billion placed, so ever though we will need about 20 digits a day, that should last us ... oh, for a while!
2. The problem with a selective process is that it would be a train-wreck, with every "owner" od every featured article fighting every day.
3. A random process is thus the only alternative to the benevolent dictatorship of Raul. And also has a number of corrolary benefits.
4. I wondered this myself - why do FAs always have to be thousands of words - on some minor subjects 200 is plenty - but these can never become featured articles. So really the whole featured article thing is broken. All the FAs I have ever checked have be front page material. This needs clarifcation, but this is a seperate issue.

I like your proposal too. However it would require a lot of work, a lot of control, and cause a lot of debate every day. I also think that it would compound the systematic bias in wikipedia. Think about it - if a bias leads to overrepresentation of certain fields (pokemon say), then that same bias is going to carry up to the next level and select those same ones again. You mentioned trying again for adminship soon. When you do, drop me a note on my talk page, and I'll likely support. I still disagree with your proposal, but I am impressed by the fact that you put a lot of effort into it, discussed it civilly, accepted its failure, rewrote it, and are again discussing politely with the opposers. That's something I want in an admin.

It's pretty explicit in the fact that the criteria are for evaluating an article, of which the talk page is not a part. We don't have "featured talk pages", any more than we have "featured peer reviews" or "featured deletion nominations"; and the existence and structure of each of those doesn't affect the article one bit. Re: Featured Topic Viability

Each member article needs to be well referenced and, if reasonably possible, GA length. I can't really judge those four articles as a topic because I'm not sure what your topic name is and what the lead article would be. In the requirements for FT status, it says that the topic should be complete, with no obvious gaps. If your topic is "Andy Warhol", then there are many other articles that would have to be included.
