The IP appears to have stopped vandalising, having made no changes for approximately 3 hours before your comment on their talk page. Although the other user may be a sockpuppet, they only made one edit and have also stopped. Blocks are only made for vandalism that is currently ongoing, which in this case it isn't. Your 3 hour rule is a reasonable one in most cases. However, look at this guys history of ignoring warnings. It is an I.P. address that is used solely vandalism. I have seen blocks issued specifically stating that the block is because the account is solely used for vandalism. Furthermore, this guy may have figured out that if he vandalises pages that aren't likely to be policed non-stop he will get away with it because WP does not chase after people if they are not vandalising at that moment. Sure. I understand your concerns, but the IP seems to be a school and the previous vandalism is very intermittant (less than 40 edits since last May) so, unless the vandalism is currently ongoing, a block is probably not going to do much good IMHO. School or not virtually every edit from that IP is vandalism. It should be blocked because of that. It should not take more than 40 vandalism attempts to get blocked. It should take about 3 or 4 different days at most. We are talking 37 edits and 12 vandalism warnings. This is a serious problem for any single user or IP. TonyTheTiger 18:06, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

You are right, it is probably not a school IP (I am not sure why I thought that, I must have been getting confused with another recently reported IP). However, my reasoning for not blocking it was not primarily related to whether it was a school IP. The main reason was that the vandalism was not ongoing at the time the block was requested. If vandalism has stopped then a block should not be applied. In the case of very frequent vandalism, with recent warnings then a block may be appropriate because it is likely that the vandalism will restart soon. That is not the case when there have only been 37 edits in the last 8-9 months. I appreciate that this may be frustrating, but that few edits over that period of time, from what could be a shared IP does not warrant a block. The blocks must be used to prevent vandalism, rather than punish it. Given that there are usually days, and often weeks, between edits on this IP means that it is very unlikely that a block here would have prevented vandalism (the maximum block would only have been 24 hours, for a first block on an IP). I am trying to learn more about fighting vandalism. I have recently been following along at CAT:RFU. I see User:TechBear has a {{Checkuserblock}}. It seems to me that in a case like this with extensive vandalism warnings, where there have been several earlier vandalism attempts in a given day (albeit ending a few hours earlier) a 12 or 24 hour block should be issued. As you have noted given the usage patterns of this IP address, this would likely not prevent vandalism. However, it would also likely not punish it either. Thus, it would give us a record of a having administrator involvement (I.E. a first admin block). At some point, even if no one catches this guy online, we have to start to take action since it seems to be a vandalism only IP address. A short term administrator block would seem to give us a record so that future vandalism attempts would be by an IP address that had been previously blocked. P.S., I am not really certain it is not a school. I admit I don't really know policy, I am just speaking about how I think it should work logically. I understand what you are saying and it does make perfect sense. However, the generally accepted policy is that we do not block if it would not be preventative. There is a record of warnings on the talk page, and although a record of blocks is more formal they should really only be given for the preventative reasons rather than to create a formal record. Although blocks may still be applied in the case of exntensive vandalism, I would still say that the level of vandalism from this IP, means that no real action is required here (except of course future preventative blocks if appropriate). I will keep an eye on this IP, and if the rate of vandalism increases, then I am happy to carry out a tougher course of action. Cheers TigerShark 23:06, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Whatever you are doing has gotten me back to Chicago. You get to decide if this is a good thing or not, but if it helps me with this reference thing, it seems like a good thing. Pretty soon i should come busting out with my Alvin Meyer article, for example, and I'm not sure quite how to reference some of that since much of my research goes back 20 years or more and is loosly lumped under my unpublished Architectural Sculpture in America umbrella. I have a fairly low tolerance for vandals figuring that if a school gets blocked, for example, they can deal with it. Find the person who is doing it and ban them from the internet for a week or two. I find that I spend a fair amount of my daily wikitime just patroling my 900 or so WATCHED pages for all sorts of junk from "Fred Farted" to the wiping out of whole articles. Anyway, good to see the traffic at the Marquette Building and elsewhere. I've been doing Detroit more than Chicago recently, but it is sharpening my reference skills, so that's a good thing. School ip

I would hesitate in this case for two reasons. First, in my experience, that template is usually not used for institutes of higher education, but rather K-12 schools (plus their international equivalents). The other -- I think the notion (as discussed in the {{SchoolIP}} template) that the ip could be blocked for up to 6 months is a bad idea in the case of an institution we know to have many separate, possibly dynamic, IP addresses, as U Mich clearly does. Would you be interested in some templates that I developed for the "Where I have been" section of your user page? Or you can use the most capable version that I use. It's {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/Nation Flag Entry}} and {{User:Will Pittenger/templates/Province Flag Entry}}. Enjoy them. sports families

I think it's okay if some families have their own categories (the Bowdens) and others do not (Karl Malone and Cheryl Ford). Make categories only when there's a large number of members, I'd say. Maybe four as a minimum.--Mike Selinker 09:17, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

For example, John Harding Lucas III hasn't become a success in the NBA yet, but he got fame for being related to his dad and his accomplishments in college. Again I thank you for pointing me in the right direction, it is thanks to people like you and user Danski14 that Wikipedia is a Thrustworthy Source.
1.I do not know if I clearly understood you but you need external evidence (links) on someone's notability to validate his or her or it's article. So do i need to provide a newspaper article? There is one but it is not to be found on the net should I scan it?
2.Should I remove the grandfather line from his site.
3.Since I am his son, I did wanted the bio/article to be as objective as possible, so that he would not be appear to be too notable. (I do not know if you get my point)
Finally Please feel free to delete any parts of the article/bio. But at least give me time to make it better.

To my surprise and after a whole week of changing and updating my father's bio, and although in his pages i had some "keep" and do no delete appeals it was deleted yesterday. Although I have followed all the wikipedians instructions and made modifications such as adding a stub. It was Finally it was removed. In the future i hope no one would be in my case where he would proudly announce to his own father hey i listed in wikipedia, then two weeks later, well you were finally deleted. I mean how would a 72 years old man feel about that?
Again I have suggested that all articles would be listed in a wait zone prior to their publication on wikipedia so they can be screened and avoid online deletion process. It would be better i beleive. This is a true Flaw in the process of deletion. I would love to hear your comment on this please.

Little Italy

Actually, I don't think the deletions were haphazard. I deleted information that was irrelevant (too much info on Cabrini Green, which has it's own article and moreover does not affect the Taylor St. area), extraneous food information (Kraft foods?), and a bunch of repetitive information about the existence of many restaurants in the area. As stated on the Little Italy talk page, Cabrini Green is nowhere near the location of Taylor street, so it's linking with the gentrification of Taylor street is not necessary. It has already been covered in the Little Sicily section which actually WAS bulldozed by Cabrini Green. Little Italy was bulldozed by UIC, and that led to its gentrification.... Little Italy is a separate entity from little Sicily. - AKeen

My edits to Cyber Girl of the Year were actually done in good faith:

  • I added {{Unreferenced}} because the article didn't cite any references
  • I added {{cn}} to the trivia item because, while true, it seemed speculative
  • I removed "Warning: contains nudity" from the external link, because the link says it goes to playboy.com, so a warning seems redundant; I would have no problem with a notice like "Note: Website contains nudity," or something a bit less POV than "Warning...". I believe the rules state that non-admins can close discussions only if the result is keep. This is for the simple practical reason that if the result is delete, an admin will have to delete it anyhow, so you're not saving the admins much work. YechielMan 23:29, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

List of Argentine films

As I explained in most of the starters page I have stated in complete so please give me time to completely fill in the filmogrpahy adding details of the directors, actors, genre and notbaility of the films info on awards , basic plots etc. It will eventally look very good and be in order by date from 1897 to 2007!!!! very useful for understabding the cinema industry of each country. List of Argentine films:2000 is a bit better but please don't go tagging every page for cleanup as it is part of a task that needs completing asap. Once it is all completed and some images and paragrpahs on the that year in film - an overview it will begin to look good.

Thanks it s a mammoth task but I beleive it is a start and can develop very quickly. I also aim to remove the red links eventually also and produce full length detailed articles but I need over a hundred people to do this!!! I am aiming to set up and document the cinema industry by coountry and set up sub-wiki project cinemas to specialize in contributing in this field. Marshalbannana aka Marshal2.0 aka Jacknicholson (indef-banned for puppetry) has a long history of puppetry and anon-IP edit-pushing (on Katana, trying to insert a youtube video for months, eventually resulting in full protection being required). After I (Wikipedia User:jesup) accused him/Jacknicholson of sockpuppetry here, he started abusing my user page and later (after user was sprotected) my Talk page occasionally (still doing it as of last weekend).
Appears to be a high-school student from somewhere in the south, perhaps Georgia, on a dynamic IP (BellSouth) which frequently changes or he forces changes.

If you mean Washington Park (racetrack) and Washington Park (neighborhood), I concentrated my efforts on Washington Park (park), which seemed to be our central piece. I didn't think we would concurrently submit the subarticles, so I didn't copyedit those. However, I did go in and copyedit (neighborhood) after I saw the GA failure notice, and fixed a couple other things, so we may be closer on that one. The note on the (racetrack) talk page is that the article isn't broad enough, although I'm not sure how we could really expand it any more. Readily available information about the track seems limited, even though it was a major track at one point. TheQuandry 20:00, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you want me to say, Tony. I've read your message a few times and you seem to be challenging the quality of my copyediting contributions. I don't know what happened with either Hull House or Near South Side, Chicago, but I probably just didn't have a great amount of time to spend on them. My job, my girlfriend and some other parts of my life come before Wikipedia. I notice some new people voting for the next round though, so maybe more help will be available on future articles. Okay, my mistake. Sorry about that. I guess I would say that some of our articles are better than others and maybe it has to do with the amount of time the individuals have to put their thoughts down? I can see how some of the sentence structure in Hull House isn't quite up to par. Rich Melman may end up suffering for lack of content (maybe not though, who knows). Little Italy and Timothy Blackstone look pretty tight to me, but of course there may be things I'm not seeing. Is there some way we can get pre-evaluations or just some hints from one of the GA folks? I don't think any of us are going to catch all of the weak spots if there are any and it would definitely help to know what areas of the articles we should tighten up before submitting. I changed the notes formatting to the smaller version (I just think it looks better when we have more than three). It's really hard to know what the real issue is with the images because I think his points are aesthetically subjective. It's definitely arguable that all of those images are pertinent to the article, but actually placing images into articles smoothly isn't my strong suit. Maybe we could put one or two into the article body and the rest would work best in a gallery at the bottom of the page? TheQuandry 15:22, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Okay, I found out that image galleries are discouraged. So, I reshuffled the images throughout the article where they seem to match the text, and moved a few out into other articles (Museum Campus sign to the Museum Campus article, Soccer Federation image to US Soccer Federation article, etc.) I think it looks better now. I also shuffled the sections around, moved the printers row stuff to the bottom, of the page, edited some of the writing, added some subheads to try and break up the text under the history heading. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. As far as assessing biographies go, I would suggest you read over the guidelines [here] to get an understanding of how assessment works. Most of the [unassessed articles] are of the Stub and Start class, which you can find definitions of the in aforementioned link. I would suggest you start help tagging unassessed articles because it helps boost your edit count, but also helps you get the ball rolling on some articles. While I'm tagging some articles, I give a second to edit and add some necessary tags it will need to get it to the next class rating, usually {{expand}} {{unreferenced}} {{wfy}} etc. Just give the articles a quick glance. If it skin and bones and very short, it belongs to the stub class. If it has a decent amount of information, has an infobox and/or a picture, a start class assessment would be appropriate. I do not mind helping you out at all. Most of the articles you have posted would all fall into the Start category. Most of the articles you have listed have fleshed out the primary information of the article - their life or their career. A B class article normally requires at least an infobox, a picture of the subject, and a good deal if information on both their life and the work they are known for. With the exception of Rob Pelinka, most of those articles would arguably fall into the Start category. For an ideal B class article, refer to Alfred Hitchcock. The aim of Biography project is get most articles to an A class, ideally a Featured Article Class. Right now the first step in moving articles in that direction is to at least get them most basic of assessments so they can move forward in the development process. From what I have gathered the priority assessment has been put on hold for now. I would suggest leaving it blank so a more educated editor on the subject can correctly assess its priority value. The priority value is how important they are to their particular field (low, medium, high, top). Someone like Albert Einstein would be top. --Ozgod 06:40, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
It is up to you. I would personally put him into the stub category since he does lack an infobox and/or photo. But if the article is full enough that you can walk away understanding who he was, start class is fine. It is at your discretion what you consider stub or start. Stub is usually the most basic whereas start is a little more developed. Rob Pelinka isn't basic perse, but he lacks an infobox and photo, which I normally consider essential for a start class. If you can find the information within the article itself, then be an advanced editor and add it in there and then tag the article for Start. --Ozgod 06:40, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Copyedit on Hull House

Hi Tony. I have a little time today, so I'm starting a pretty heavy copyedit of Hull House. I'm not an expert on the House itself, so I wondered if you could help me with one sentence. It's ambiguous and I'm not sure how to restructure it. It's the first sentence of the second paragraph under "Mission" about Hull House attracting women who rose to become prominent. Did Hull host these women (and they later became activists and influential people), or did it attract the notice of society women who later used their political power to provide assistance to Hull? I deleted the sentence about open forum vs structured debate. It didn't fit well with the rest of the paragraph and I wasn't sure how best to integrate it. It isn't necessarily wrong to include it in the article, but it should be in its own paragraph or subsection and possibly expanded. Actually, the whole "Mission" section might be better if the different elements were placed under subsections or something similar. Maybe a new main head "mission", with subheads of teachings" and "accomplishments". "Mission would be a short head with the actual quoted mission, the Paul Kellogg quote and other Mission-related stuff thereunder, the stuff about the juvenile court and related info under "accomplishments", and "teachings" discussing the classes and studies with the mention about open forum/structured debate?
