logos

Could you please tell me in simple terms how I might upload a logo from a school's website onto the wikipedia article. I had been told previously that properly filling out this tamplate is sufficient. What is lacking in this? {{Information |Description= Massimiliano Massimo Institute |Author=unknown |Permission=non-free logo in infobox |Source= http://www.istitutomassimo.it/ }} I'm told there should be a way to use these logos for one-time use; what more can be done to legitimate the use?Jzsj (talk) 01:51, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Absolutely, you can use logos in articles describing their subject under fair-use guidelines. To do so, you need to include both a copyright template (which you have already done) and a fair use rationale. Perhaps the easiest way to create a rationale is to use the template Non-free use rationale logo. — Train2104 (talk • contribs) 01:54, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Please advise as to what exactly is missing from the rationale above? Others have told me that this is sufficient.Jzsj (talk) 02:36, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
A non-free use rationale is more specific than the simple description above. Among other things, it needs to explicitly state which article it's used for, as well as provide a justification. I have placed the proper rationale on File:MassimoRome.png, you can use that as the basis for future uploads. — Train2104 (talk • contribs) 03:02, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks much! Jzsj (talk) 19:52, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi, how are you? Do you know if there is any other information on Joe Rogan's US open Taekwondo tournament achievement? Like style of Taekwondo that is was achieved in? I can't seem to find him in the wtf US open standings. Thanks. Nothingbutideas (talk) 18:08, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hello Train2104. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog (around 15,000 pages) down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. -- Samtar talk · contribs 08:15, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

PROD

Hello. It seems to me that "PROD is only applicable to mainspace articles, lists, and disambiguation pages; it cannot be used with redirects, userspace pages, templates, categories, or pages in any other namespace". So you would need to remove all the PROD tags you have put in userspace. Thanks and regards, Biwom (talk) 07:41, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

Ah wait there might be something I'm missing... Biwom (talk) 07:43, 20 February 2017 (UTC)
WP:BPROD "This process applies for both user books (usually located at User:USERNAME/Books/Booktitle) and community books (those found in the Book namespace)." — Train2104 (t • c) 07:45, 20 February 2017 (UTC)
Yes, you are right, sorry for the disturbance. I just wish the BPROD did not add hidden category "Proposed deletion" to the article, since this is not proposed deletion per se. Thanks and regards, Biwom (talk) 07:49, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

I think I see where the confusion came in for this article. The article was moved to the current page in 2011, with the "original" version deleted in 2008. THat original version however was for a completely different band, and has no connection to this article. I removed the tags on the page for that reason. RickinBaltimore (talk) 13:48, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

Ah, got it. Did you also mean to remove the PROD tag, which wasn't placed by me? If the article deleted at AFD has no connection to this one it shouldn't be ineligible for PROD. Is there a way to search the move log by target page name? — Train2104 (t • c) 14:09, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
I did as well for the prod tag. As for the move log, here's the edit: [1]. RickinBaltimore (talk) 14:18, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

Help retrieving deleted article/tips

Hi Train, can you please send me the FoodTank page (Food Tank) that was deleted last week? I'm working hard to figure out how to improve it so that it doesn't get taken down again. I would greatly appreciate any advice you have! Thank you so much. SMH425 (talk) 21:08, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

The page wasn't deleted, it was merely converted into a redirect. If you go to Food Tank and look at the page history, you should be able to see your original article. — Train2104 (t • c) 21:43, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
Appreciate it, thanks! Is it still possible to create a separate page or would it automatically be flagged again? SMH425 (talk) 22:49, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
Yes, if you want to try to create the page again, you may do so. Just make sure to delete the #REDIRECT line on top. Tagging for deletion is not an automated process, it is done by a human. If you write a neutral, well-referenced article; it won't be tagged for deletion. — Train2104 (t • c) 02:30, 22 February 2017 (UTC)

Amar Nath Bhaduri - declining the request for deletion of the image

Hi,

You had marked the image in the wiki for "Amar Nath Bhaduri" to be deleted. The link to the page is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AmarNathBhaduriProfile.jpg. Here are the permission details for your perusal. It has been updated in the image licensing details as well:

Extended content

The image was obtained from Amar Nath Bhaduri's daughter Tisha Banerjee for upload. It has been communicated to wiki as well:

Subject: Permission to use attached photograph for wiki To: permissions-en@wikimedia.org Cc: Tisha <tishab@gmail.com>

Hi,

I have got the permission from Tisha Banerjee (cc'ed), who has the copyrights to the attached image. She has given permission for it to be used for the wiki page on Amar Nath Bhaduri.

Thanks and Regards, Pratim

File history

Hello, I've gone ahead and replaced the deletion notice with an {{OTRS pending}} tag, which will prevent deletion until the OTRS (volunteer response team) has had a chance to review your email. This may take a few months. However, I should note that merely permission to release an image for use on Wikipedia is not enough, we need permission to release the image for the world to use under the CC-BY-SA license - in other words, anyone can use the image, for any purpose including commercial ones, so long as they give you or Tisha credit. When the OTRS team replies to you, they will discuss this further. As I am not an OTRS volunteer, I cannot expedite this process. — Train2104 (t • c) 14:31, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

Request

Hello.

Could you list all of the U.S. states in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions article which passed anti-BDS legislation, which I requested in the talk page of the article? They currently number 17 and are not many, so I think they can all be listed for now, until the number increases to 20 or 25 states sometime in the future, as there are anti-BDS drafts pending.

Thank you.

Please stop closing TFDs. The closes you are making have not reached "maturity" (i.e. seven days old). If you're ever in doubt, check Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Old_unclosed_discussions to see what's listed. If a template isn't listed there, the discussion should not be closed. Page mover granted

Hello, Train2104. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, and move subpages when moving the parent page(s).

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

WTDY-FM vandalism and subsequent locking

Hello there! I just wanted to thank you for temporarily locking the WTDY-FM page. I've never requested to have a page locked before, so I'm trying to follow the rules on getting the page locked. What I assume to be spambots from various IP addresses will go in periodically and add original research, unnecessary and redundant information, and just general confusion on the page, resulting in an unprofessional, sloppy looking page. Again, thank you!

Kindergarten readiness

"this is different from Kindergarten article" : Two points that might change your mind, Special:Log/Kindergarten readiness & Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Kand702. Cabayi (talk) 17:39, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

A10 requires the content to be substantially the same. Kindergarten discusses the concept in various countries, Kindergarten readiness discusses the educational prerequisites, which are totally different. That the article was created by meatpuppets is unfortunate, but my reading of WP:MEAT is one of "do not use meatpuppets to attempt to influence consensus" (unlike the stricter guidance for sockpuppets). A Google search reveals many reliable sources, including government organizations and peer reviewed studies, so notability is met. The article is not well written, that's for sure, but it's well enough that that alone is not enough for deletion. Feel free to take this to AFD if you disagree. – Train2104 (t • c) 14:31, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

Essay Catholic or Roman Catholic?

Hi Train

I am not certain why you redirected the talkpage for the essay WP:Catholic or Roman Catholic? to talk:Roman Catholic (term). The former is an opinionated essay, and the talkpage would be focused on developing the opinions expressed in the essay, where as the latter is a fact-based article regarding an encyclopedic topic, and its talkpage would be focused on developing the article. –Zfish118talk 03:31, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

What I did was retarget the mainspace redirect Catholic or Roman Catholic? to Roman Catholic (term) as well as the corresponding talk pages. I did not edit any of the redirects whose origins were in project or project talk space. I believe that WP:XNR's should be avoided for any search term with even the slightest plausibility, as users who end up in project space will be thoroughly confused. It is not too difficult to imagine a user unfamiliar with the two terms searching for this question. Therefore, I retargeted it to a related article. – Train2104 (t • c) 03:38, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
I realized the error, and requested they be speedily deleted in lieu of redirecting them to an article not directly related to the essay. I think when I originally moved the essay from user space to project space, I made a mistake, and moved it to article space first. These are unnecessary artifacts that indeed cause unnecessary confusion. –Zfish118talk 03:43, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

I noticed this edit and true enough it now has sources. However, there is an issue with the underlying original image which is a painting that was photographed and released freely on Flickr without any evidence of permission from the original artist, as I stated in the post at WP:MCQ. Do you not agree? ww2censor (talk) 15:05, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

I didn't notice the thread at MCQ, my bad. I've restored the tag. I saw it in the CC-BY image library and didn't even think to check the Flickr link. This a DW of a DW, so yes we do need permission from "kate". – Train2104 (t • c) 15:08, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Running into problems passing copyright protocol

RE: I got Ticket number for the file uploaded, but the image got deleted. It appears that the copyright holders permission did not reach you, so I forwarded her cc to permissions-en@wikimedia.org from yahoo account I registered with wiki. However I tried it 3 times and each time it came back with a message "undeliverable - no such e-mail address" What shall I do? I got Ticket number, so you must have received something from us. My image that I wanted to upload on the site I corrected is in limbo. I am too scared to attempt anything more, because I do not want to be banned to upload in the future. Could you give me pointers? Thank you so much for your attention to this matter. --Smallshrine 21:26, 22 April 2017 (UTC) ( talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smallshrine (talkcontribs)

Sorry, I do not have access to the email list. If you received a ticket number, your submission is in the queue. If the permission is deemed sufficient, the image will be restored. Be patient, as the system is backlogged and this could take a couple months. Hi Train2104 – I notice that you've made some recent edits to {{Prod blp}} and {{Prod blp/dated}}. I wonder if they might have something to do with the bold red error Error: Please do not use this template in articles. that now occurs in the Prod notices, such as at Dennis Ackland-Snow? These are filling up the error category CAT:WRONG, so can you help me clear this up?  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  06:45, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

@Paine Ellsworth: Actually, this wasn't my edit, rather, it was this redirection of {{Find sources 3}} to {{find sources}} by KAP03. I've reverted it for now. – Train2104 (t • c) 11:47, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much, Train2104! I hope it wasn't too much of a hunt to find that, and I'm glad to see that your edits to the Prod templates were sound. CAT:WRONG has already begun to empty out again. You da greatest!  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  12:36, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

Redirects resulting from page moves are not usually speedy deleted as implausible. DES (talk) 09:04, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

@DESiegel: R3 says "... unless the moved page was also recently created". Of course, "recently created" is very subjective. Though in this case, {{db-error}} may also apply. – Train2104 (t • c) 11:49, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
It is not an "error" for a sandbox page to have a name unrelated to the final name of the article drafted therein, nor to move a sandboxed draft to mainspace directly. Indeed that is one recommended path to article creation. So in my view {{db-error}} should not apply. DES (talk) 16:40, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

question regarding: ‪Speedy deletion nomination of Valpo Velvet‬

Hi,

Valpo Velvet is a page students submitted for work in our class, New Literacies, Cultures, and Technologies of Writing. I can't tell if someone else already contested the speedy deletion or not. The button that your message said would be on the page is not there.

I'm assuming as a course participating through WikiEdu I will be able to access the page regardless of deletion. If that is not the case, can we hold off on deletion until I have a chance to grade it?

Here are the folks at WikiEdu staff we've been working with: User:Shalor (Wiki Ed) and User:Helaine (Wiki Ed).

Thanks, Aschuet1 (talk) 03:54, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

  • Aschuet1, it looks like the speedy deletion was declined by one of the site admins, Dlohcierekim. Offhand the page needs some editing for flow, but it doesn't look to be unambiguously promotional. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 12:17, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
as I mentioned on the talk page. 😁 Dlohcierekim 12:30, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

File page move

Hi, just wondering if you could explain your reasoning for moving File:Outsiders logo.png to File:Outsiders logo (Australia).png, as you did not leave an explanation when doing so. Thanks -- Whats new?(talk) 23:43, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Oops I must've left the reason off. It was to disambiguate it from File:Outsiders Logo.png, and since the Australian article is the one with the disambiguator, it made sense to move that one. – Train2104 (t • c) 00:05, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

Beau James pic

The copyright to the image is held by "Beau" James Brincefield, who approved its use. I added to the file page what I hope to be the appropriate verbiage. --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 12:26, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

@Piledhigheranddeeper: What you wrote on the file page contradicts itself. You say that you have the permission of the copyright owner, and also that it's fair use (which implies you do not have permission of the copyright owner). If he agrees to release the photo under the CC-BY-SA license, which allows anyone to use the image for any purpose (including modification and commercial use), please have him email permissions-en@wikimedia.org (see WP:DCP and WP:CONSENT). If he does not agree to such a license, the file will have to be deleted, since fair use images of living people are not allowed in the vast majority of cases (since anyone can conceivably take a photo of him and release it under a free license). – Train2104 (t • c) 16:47, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

About several pictures that you have marked in my 'ujishadow' account

To be honest I am not quite sure why it violated the wiki requirements. I was granted by Titan Sports to make the pages and they gave me the pictures (with copyrights of Titan Sports). Does that mean I need to show you the approval that they gave me the photos? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ujishadow (talkcontribs) 14:35, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia's non-free content criteria are stricter than the US fair use standards. However, both require that we respect commercial opportunities for the work. What this means is that if someone is in the business of selling or licensing images, such as a stock photo service or news agency, we cannot use their images. If we did, we would become an alternate source people could use for their work, possibly depriving them of revenue. Therefore, such files must be immediately deleted. In addition, some of the files you uploaded were deleted twice in the past because their use wasn't critical to understanding the article. The people depicted are still alive, and the trophy has not be destroyed. Therefore, it is possible to create a free image, so we cannot use non-free media here. The threshold is could be created, not exists. Finally, you mention that you have received permission from the newspaper. That may address the first problem, but unless they gave you permission to release them under a free license (which allows anyone to use the photos, including commercially), the second problem still exists. Thus, these files must be deleted. Finally, please note that if you work for or are being paid by Titan Sports, you are required to disclose this and are strongly discouraged from directly editing pages related to your conflict of interest. – Train2104 (t • c) 14:55, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

About Ethan_Klein.jpg

You posted a message on my talk page about permission problems on the file Ethan_Klein.jpg. I responded, but I don't know if you get a notification or not, so I'll paste my question here to be sure:

"The TOS I linked includes the permission to use any images uploaded to their site for non-commercial purposes. If this isn't enough, then I don't think it's possible to use any free images from Imgur. The TOS is the only page they have where they give permission to use their images. Please explain." Dino10 (talk) 20:19, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Content licensed a non-commercial use only license is prohibited on Wikipedia unless it is treated as non-free content, in which case it must meet the criteria. Photos of living people are almost replaceable, so such photos almost always fail the criteria. You are right that it is not possible to use files from Imgur in the vast majority of cases. – Train2104 (t • c) 20:28, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
(Edited) I've asked the author to upload it to flickr, which uses Creative Commons. This should solve the problem. Dino10 (talk) 00:57, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
It's been edited with the correct license, how do I verify that everything's correct/remove the template if it is? Ethan_Klein.jpg Dino10 (talk) 16:44, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
@Dino10: I've removed the template. However, just to be safe, please have the author email permissions-en@wikimedia.org just to prove that he/she is the original uploader, in case someone else sees this and accuses you of license laundering. – Train2104 (t • c) 16:48, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
What proof should he include, an attachment of the original image? Dino10 (talk) 16:52, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
Please see WP:DCAE for a sample letter. Include both the Flickr and Imgur URL's. – Train2104 (t • c) 16:56, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
The image has been removed with the reason "Bad Flickr author", what does this mean? Dino10 (talk) 16:48, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

I'm not sure - there is a list of "bad Flickr authors" known for uploading copyrighted content as their own, but a brand new user would not be on that list. I've placed an OTRS pending tag on it so that it stays until the email is read. – Train2104 (t • c) 00:51, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

A crop of a picture I took (of Aaron Mannes) has been challenged by you on my talk page

I took a picture of a group of people (including Aaron Mannes), cropped the subject to a separate product, and released the crop under the proper license. For privacy reasons, I don't want the larger picture released. You seem to think there is some sort of license issue. What do I need to do to properly settle this?StaniStani 14:18, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

In the summary you credit "William Burns". There's no way to know that this is you. Please send confirmation that this is in fact you to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, and place {{subst:OP}} on the file once you have done so. – Train2104 (t • c) 14:19, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

permissions links

That link to permissions is invalid. The copyright holder is not the person who appears in a picture in almost all cases. This needs to go through OTRS. Please note that I'm an OTRS agent. ~ Rob13Talk 01:30, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

True, I didn't think of that at first, but I (perhaps incorrectly) assumed that the photographs were made as a work for hire or by staff, given the nature of the subject. Let's see where the FFD goes. – Train2104 (t • c) 11:51, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

You have made your WP:POINT. Now please don't WP:DISRUPT anymore.

Please be more judicious with your deletion requests Train, as your behaviour is verging on WP:DISRUPT. Your recent behaviour towards Smooth Island (Tasmania) this includes 1) removing image links from an article for a issue relating to style guidelines (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Smooth_Island_%28Tasmania%29&type=revision&diff=783389251&oldid=783305926), just to subsequently tag all of these these images for deletion because they became orphaned (due to your previous actions) (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AExaminer_p4_23-1-15.pdf&type=revision&diff=783389321&oldid=783305585). I am trying to make genuine constructive changes to this page and your repeated deletion requests are making me want to stop contributing to the Wikipedia project. If this constant meddling continues, I may have to escalate my concerns formally. I don't want to fight, I just want to keep improving my pages. Please stop making this a negative experience, Train2104. You have made your WP:POINT. Now please don't WP:DISRUPT anymore. Jkokavec (talk) 10:04, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

@Jkokavec: My goal is not to cause any disruption, nor am I trying to make a point. I am merely trying to enforce WP:NFCC, which must be done strictly because of its legal implications. There are two criteria that these images clearly violate, in my belief:
  • 2 (respect for commercial opportunities): By posting a high-resolution scan of a newspaper article, you have established Wikipedia as an alternative source for that article, which could possibly deprive the newspaper of revenue. This is a strict standard, and the only allowable exception is the use of content for commentary about itself. (example: Bliss (image))
  • 9 (contextual significance) Though you assert that it is a way of showing that the island has received media attention, it is not the only way of doing so. Merely citing the newspaper articles, for instance, would achieve the same effect. See Wikipedia:Non-free content#Meeting the contextual significance criterion for notes on this.
My next step will be to nominate these files for deletion at WP:FFD, which allows other users to have a say. Whatever the consensus of that discussion is, I will respect it, however, I highly doubt it will go in your favor. Pinging @George Ho: who commented on this matter on the article talk page. – Train2104 (t • c) 11:43, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
Umm... I don't know what to say about Jkokavec's labeling Train2104 "disruptive". He worked very hard on image-related matters, and I thank him for that. As Train2104 said, best to take the gallery to FFD, especially when, in my experience, the pre-FFD dialogue is filled with disagreements. Well, not all pre-FFD discussions would contain disagreements. In this case, seems that there are disagreements. To me, the gallery of non-free images don't add understanding to the topic. Rather they are well suited to other websites primarily dedicated to the island. However, if you don't want them removed, then FFD is the way to go. George Ho (talk) 12:58, 2 June 2017 (UTC); edited. 13:01, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Templates

Most of the ones I've seen look like people get their straight and curly brackets mixed up when creating a new page, so they inadvertently create a new page in template space. Other ones probably get broken or rendered obsolete as Wikipedia's coding gets updated. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 01:09, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

Backlognav etc. templates

Hi, sorry about the padding differences, I'll be happy to keep working on that. There are two technical reasons for my change, however. First, accessibility. The templates output data table elements on something that is not a data table, which causes problems for screen readers. Second, mobile view. By using the navbox class on something that is not a navbox, the templates are unviewable in mobile. Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 01:26, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

I've started a discussion about my edits at the parent template's talk page, Template talk:Admin dashboard#Mobile-friendly and accessible deletion backlog. Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 01:55, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Understood about the accessbility issues. I absolutely abhor mobile view and switch to desktop mode before doing anything, so I wasn't aware of that. I'll try sandboxing this too to match when I have some time. – Train2104 (t • c) 12:41, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Wyoming Gas Chamber

Hi, I am the one who uploaded the photo of the Wyoming gas chamber that you deleted. I did not know about the rule you specified on my talk page. While I may not agree with that rule, you seem to have more experience on Wikipedia than me, so I trust your judgment to delete that photo. Thank you. --TRUEandHONESTuser (talk) 16:10, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

File copyright and non-free content are complex topics. We all agree that the rules are constraining, but unfortunately since this is an area with significant legal considerations, they can't be changed easily and they must be enforced. Thanks for your understanding. – Train2104 (t • c) 16:34, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Noindex

Would you please explain this unconventional edit of yours?[14] Debresser (talk) 14:58, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

@Debresser: That an article is a hoax is a serious allegation to make. We already make the template red and different from the other problem ones, for this reason. I believe that entire articles or sections whose accuracy is questioned (as opposed to merely style, tone, or small doubts where {{cn}} is more appropriate), should not be indexed. CSD, PROD, and AFD tags already apply NOINDEX, so there is precedent for NOINDEXing when an editor has expressed serious doubts about an article's suitability. (Note: NOINDEX has no effect in article-space when an article is over 90 days old.) – Train2104 (t • c) 00:47, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
Hm, I do get the point. On the other hand, this template is not a step towards deletion. If you feel strongly about it, perhaps it would be a good idea to seek consensus about this at some forum. Truth be told, wouldn't really know where to go with this question. Debresser (talk) 11:00, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

File:IPad Mini 3 Gold.png

Hello

In revision 787199222, you seemingly have tampered with correct dates and in the edit summary wrote: "don't play with dates...".

Given the fact that I inserted those templates on 18 June 2017, not 23, it quite frankly seems to me you are the one who is playing with dates.

Of course, being a fellow file mover and template editor, you may have a good explanation; I am eager to hear it.

Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 05:06, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

@Codename Lisa: I'm very reluctant to put files in a dated deletion category that has already been "processed". I've seen many such files languish unnoticed for weeks or months in the past, so I just reset the clock when I see them (or G6 if they're ancient) – Train2104 (t • c) 00:07, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
Well, it didn't exactly languish this time. Of course, I am not saying what you wrote is flawed, unprecedented or false. But I am saying that it is ex postfacto: Instead of "don't play with dates...", you should have written "playing with dates a little to prevent the issue from going unnoticed."
Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 12:10, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

CSD/PROD backlog sandboxes

Hi, sorry it took so long, but I've set up some sandboxes for these templates. Increasing the font size seemed to help.

Re:Messages left at my talk page

Hi Train2104. I hope you are well. I had left a message on one of the talk pages of the files that I uploaded, which have now been deleted without any further warning. This seems counter to what was suggested on my talk page and the speedy delete template, which is that I could contest the licensing issue (and get a response, I assumed). The file talk page is now gone too, and I cannot see if anyone replied there. On the talk page I had explained quite clearly why the files were appropriately licensed.

I don't want to upload the same pictures with the same licensing and be left with them deleted again and myself blocked from editing. Please could you advise me on what to do. The files I uploaded were licensed and attributed in exactly the way the file upload wizard suggested to do, and also according to what my colleagues (the original authors of the pictures) wished, whom I talked with about this in person.

Thank you. --Manav.Kohli (talk) 16:48, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

@Manav.Kohli: The files you uploaded were available at higher resolutions than the ones you uploaded. This is a red flag for copyright infringement. Unfortunately, I did not read what you posted on the talk pages of the files before they were deleted. If the source has a license compatible with Wikipedia (anyone can use, alter, or distribute, including commercially), please link that license on the file description page. In addition, please upload the highest available resolution of that file. If you want, you can upload one, reply here, and I'll look over it. Thanks for your understanding. – Train2104 (t • c) 01:02, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Uploaded with incorrect copyright

Hey there, I'm an old wikisaur and don't really know my way around images anymore, so I'd love your help with this if you have time. I uploaded two pictures for Alexandria Harmonizers as copyrighted works because the person who sent them to me told me "They're ours, we own the copyright," but just now he clarified that he meant "one of our guys took them so we can use them." In other words, they are not copyrighted images at all. How would I go about changing the copyright status to public domain? Should I just re-upload? Many thanks, · Andonic contact 23:34, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

@Andonic: Please clarify that with your source that they are OK with releasing it under a free license (anyone can use, including for commercial purposes). If that's fine with them, have them email the permission to OTRS and place {{subst:OP}} on the reuploaded or restored file. If they're not OK with it, unfortunately we have to follow NFCC and they can't be used. – Train2104 (t • c) 21:04, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

@Schwarzenbergika: First, I've placed your rationale in the template required. Please read the instructions next time. Second, I'm not sure that that rationale is valid. From what I can tell, this bust is located in a public space, so anyone can walk up, photograph it, and release it under a free license. The threshold required by our WP:NFCC is not that a free image does not exist, it is that one cannot be created. – Train2104 (t • c) 21:05, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

The Speyer Legacy School

Thank you for the help in editing (your initial edits were very instructive). We are trying to clean up a dormant page with more accurate information about the school (the previous iteration contained a lot of information about other unaffiliated institutions and a lot of other irrelevant text). Your advisement on encyclopedic writing is taken to heart and we're referring to other school pages to help clean up the style of our added content. Do you have any other specific recommendations? Obviously, the copy was written by our marketing team for brochures, etc., , so I'm trying to re-work it as best I can to be more factual and less advertising, but if you have specific things you can point out, I'll do my best to clean that as well.

Re: The files, this is my first time working with file licensing on Wikipedia. I saw another school used the "Logo" file licensing, so I did that for our logo and did the same for our photographs. I haven't uploaded photographs to wikipedia in a *long* time (maybe 10 years?) so the new format was confusing for me. Would you recommend removing the files until I can get the school to agree to license them in a more commons-friendly way?

Thank you. I'm learning the ropes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jenniever (talkcontribs) 23:24, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

I see that you placed the disputed tag on the file, which means the reviewing administrator will look at it before deletion. In general, non-free photographs of things that are still in existence are not accepted, though with the information you added (that the news agency was the only one allowed to take pictures), I wouldn't have tagged the file in the first place, but rather taken it to WP:FFD. I'm going to leave that decision now up to the reviewing administrator. – Train2104 (t • c) 15:56, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Please help! The images from this page I created have suddenly disappeared and I am having a difficult time understanding what needs to be done to restore them. Thanks, Leezk (talk) 05:02, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

@Leezk: While it may be true, is no evidence to support your claim that you have permission to license File:James Joseph DeMartis.JPG with the license that you claimed. Please follow the protocol outlined at WP:DCP to provide this evidence confidentially to Wikipedia's volunteer response team. If this evidence is deemed sufficient, the file will be restored. As for the other files (the paintings) that were removed from the article, I was not involved with that. However, I would suggest that you mention them in your permissions email, as if that is deemed sufficient they can be restored under a free license and used anywhere. – Train2104 (t • c) 23:06, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

Dear Train2104, Thanks for this response. I didn't see it right away because I didn't get an email notice. I can have Stephen DeMartis who is the actual copyright holder provide permission directly to the Wikipedia team if you judge that would be best. I have two specific questions though: 1) How exactly does one submit the permission to OTRS? Is there a form and/or email address? 2) Can you please tell me, in donating copyrighted materials, that is the images of paintings by his father, would the GFDL-self tag (GNU) be the most appropriate one? Any advice you have would be most greatly appreciated! Thanks Leezk (talk) 10:10, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

@Leezk: Please email it to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. We suggest licensing under both GFDL-self and CC-BY-SA-4.0. Note that these licenses require Stephen to allow anyone to use the works for any purpose (commercial or not), provided they attribute him and release under a compatible license. If he does not agree to that, we cannot have the paintings on Wikipedia. – Train2104 (t • c) 15:54, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks Train2104 for this very clear information. Stephen has written an email to wikimedia permissions granting permission to use images under GFDL-self and CC-BY-SA-4.0, with a full understanding of the licensing implications. I appreciate your help!Leezk (talk) 05:10, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Please stop deleting the images

Not only do I have a ticket number Ticket#2017072610012626, but I tagged my images, of which I directly hold the copyright of, and have provided evidence for, with an OTRS Pending tag, which allows the image to stay up for 264 days. Please remove whichever tags you have included towards the images I use. ArtFer1 (talk) 16:07, 26 July 2017 (UTC) @Train2104:

If there is an OTRS pending tag, the images will not be deleted on licensing grounds. However, please do not upload duplicate images, as those will be deleted. Only upload one copy of each image you wish to use. In addition, your uploads and your drafts give the impression that you are a paid editor. If you are being paid for your contributions, or work for Dom Pedro Hotels, you must disclose this. Please see WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY and WP:COI before continuing. – Train2104 (t • c) 16:11, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
I had it under Connected COntributor, but have changed it to paid Contributor. I had to reupload the images, because apparently wikipedia doesn't have an image management page, so I cannot manage my images in any way. ArtFer1 (talk) 16:29, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
@ArtFer1: I see the paid contributor tag now, thank you. Note that this does not exempt your draft from possible deletion due to advertising material. What exactly do you mean by managing your images? @Explicit: I notice you just made a bunch of F11 deletions of uploads by this user - can you double check to make sure none had OTRS pending tags? Thanks. – Train2104 (t • c) 00:06, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
In regards to the images I deleted, none had the {{OTRS pending}} tag to indicate a permission email had been sent. RHaworth deleted the others as copyright violations, which also did not contain the tag. xplicit 00:20, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. I trust you enough that you wouldn't delete them, but I wanted your comment here in case this user asked again. – Train2104 (t • c) 00:29, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

Ali Eyal

I declined the speedy deletion request on Ali Eyal. Clearly doesn't qualify for G7.--Fabrictramp | talk to me 04:03, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

@Fabrictramp: May I ask why? The author blanked it, and there were no significant textual additions by other users. – Train2104 (t • c) 13:25, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
After Smjg reverted the blanking, the main author added more text. Maybe they still wanted it deleted, maybe not? It's not unambiguous, so speedy isn't really appropriate. Unless someone adds sources, it will get deleted in a couple of days anyways. --Fabrictramp | talk to me 16:59, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

@Uniquejha: On 3 August, I placed a proposed deletion tag on this article. You objected by removing the deletion tag from the article, which stopped the proposed deletion process. Now, I've sent the article for a deletion discussion. This process cannot be stopped by you, rather it is a community consensus-based decision on whether or not to keep the article. Please make your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Parasmaninath Temple, and back up your claim of notability with reliable sources. They will then be taken into account by the closing administrator in a week. Thanks. – Train2104 (t • c) 11:47, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

SBS Numbers

The recent removal of the SBS numbers is not necessary. Om the Main page for the fleet the numbers are posted so the same should be done on the SBS PAGE

@Olsen24: It's one thing to specify the general range of numbers for a fleet (i.e. to say that the Orion 7's are numbered X to Y). Some may even think that is too much, but personally I'm fine with it. But which buses are assigned to SBS service/wrapped has no source whatsoever, and buses are wrapped/unwrapped often. Plus, even if there were a source, it's a level of detail that a general reader interested in learning more about SBS would not care about. – Train2104 (t • c) 18:20, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Julian Barnes

Since I can't seem to find an appropriate image of Julian Barnes, can you help me find one? ASaltzman (talk) 11:25, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

@ASaltzman: Wikipedia has strict policies on copyright and non-free content. As Julian Barnes is alive, a non-free image cannot be used for this purpose, as it is possible for someone to create a free image. It is up to you to find a free image (allowing derivative works and commercial use) - if such an image does not exist, I'm afraid this article will have to exist without one until someone manages to take one. – Train2104 (t • c) 00:02, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

Frank Vincent image deletion

Thanks Train2104 ... Since there are copyright issues that would prohibit use of the image, I'd considered trying to clear it for use, but decided against that was planning to delete it. Photo copyright

Hi train. You noted that I might have a copyright issue on one of my images. I'm pretty sure the image is free to use, but I'm tracking down the copyright holder to get permission. I'm pretty sure I'll have it in short order, so it would be good if we can just leave it be until they get back with me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Justinblack (talkcontribs) 11:27, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

You tagged File:Justin and Charlie Freeman at Hall County Political Gathering, 2013.jpg as a non-free file. If the copyright owner released the image to you under a free license (anyone can use it for any purpose, including modification and commercial use), please place a free license template on the image, have the copyright holder email permissions-en@wikimedia.org, and then place {{subst:OP}} on the image. If the copyright holder does not release it under such a license, we cannot accept it. – Train2104 (t • c) 17:17, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

SCOGA Photo copyright

Hey bud. I appreciate you trying to make sure all the T's are crossed on photo copyrights, and you're correct that government works aren't ordinarily in the public domain, but the Georgia Supreme Court has granted express permission for images taken from their oral arguments to be used in publications as long as they aren't being sold for a profit or being used to alter the content of oral arguments (for example, you couldn't take an oral argument video and cut it to make one side look like it said something it didn't). If you want to check their policy you can call them. (404) 656-3470. So you might want to save us all the trouble and take down the discussion on the David Freeman page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Justinblack (talkcontribs) 10:56, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

First, please sign your posts using 4 tildes (~~~~). Merely placing your name is not enough. Second, you said as long as they aren't being sold for a profit. That is actually grounds for immediate deletion as Wikipedia cannot accept such files unless they fall under fair use. Please see WP:NONCOM. Thanks. – Train2104 (t • c) 11:02, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Train, but I don't see how your citation applies. It seems to be that citing something in wikipedia (educational) is fair use. Can you show me something more definitive that says I can't use this image? I'll admit, I'm a noob on the subject, but I called the supreme court and they told me that I can use it for this, so we have permission from the copyright holder to do it.Justinblack (talk) 11:45, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Though it may be fair use by US Copyright law, Wikipedia has a stricter standard for fair use. If I recall, this image is of a living person and existed to show that he has testified before the GA Supreme Court before. On the first part, because he is still alive, someone could take a free image of him. On the second part, it does not significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding, in comparison to a sentence or two. Thus, it cannot be used as a non-free work under fair use on Wikipedia. Having permission to use something for non-commercial/educational-only purposes or prohibiting modification is no better, as anything on Wikipedia which does not meet the strict fair use just mentioned is released under the CC-BY-SA or similar license, which permits commercial use. Thus, there is no gray area - either commercial use/modification is allowed, the file falls under the strict fair use standard, or it is deleted. – Train2104 (t • c) 23:03, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello, I have deprodded He Who Dreams, because another editor re-added a prod tag that was removed by an alleged sockpuppet. In general prod tags can't be re-added once removed, even if the removal was done in bad faith, and the alleged sockmaster is blocked, not banned, so the WP:DEPROD exceptions don't apply. If you still wish to pursue deletion please feel free to open an AFD; I won't object to deletion there. —KuyaBriBriTalk 18:35, 2 October 2017 (UTC)

  • FYI -- I just tagged the article for speedy deletion under WP:G5 which relates to articles created by banned users. It looks like this might apply in this situation. Dolotta (talk) 18:38, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
    • @Dolotta: G5 is questionable since the article creator's block happened after the article was created, but I'm not going to object to it either. —KuyaBriBriTalk 18:40, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
      • I agree that G5 is not applicable here, since the article was created by the master before being blocked, not by the sock. I'll start a discussion at WT:PROD. – Train2104 (t • c) 18:46, 2 October 2017 (UTC)

Help with copyrights

Hey, I noticed that you recently nominated one of my images for speedy deletion (which it did deserve). I was wondering if you could help me classify the copyright of the image. It was titled File:Mikemorasky.png. I believe it may fall under fair use, but I'm not sure. Thanks! VTnav (talk) 04:07, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi Train2104. The deleted file and its description page. Regards, FASTILY 20:33, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
@VTnav: As Mike Morasky is still alive, we cannot accept a fair use image of him. (anyone can take a picture of him and release it under a free license, he is alive and not in prison, etc) So any image we use must be free, which means anyone can use it for any purpose, whether it be commercial or with modifications. OCRemix does not seem to have such a license, but it does seem to have user generated content. If you took the photo and wish to release it under a free license, please follow the instructions at WP:DCP. @Fastily: Thanks, all I really needed was the description page. Feel free to delete both. – Train2104 (t • c) 01:10, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi Train2104. Can you check this edit you made to Template:Di-missing some article links. Is there a reason "pp" has been added before the category page? Hi, thanks for your answer. I don't understand why the image was cancelled -- it is standard for academic journal to use the colophon information since the front cover might have copyright information but the colophon is just a set of information about the journal. Why would that not be ok? Also is the page still up then, because I can't see it... thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122Manor (talkcontribs) 02:28, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

You notified me that three images that I uploaded for the above-mentioned article (though I actually used only two for the article) had been tagged for speedy deletion. However, I had already received permission from the copyright owner via email to use the images in the article. I just forwarded to the permissions-en@wikimedia.org email address the email I received from the copyright owner giving me permission to use them.

How do I reinstate the image and the copyright tag while permission is pending? And do I have to place the fact that I emailed the message to permissions-en@wikimedia.org on some kind of list? Thank you for your prompt reply. Dylanexpert (talk) 00:30, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

If you choose to reupload the images, you must indicate that you have sent permission by placing the tag {{subst:OP}} on the page. Fastily feel free to restore these on that condition. – Train2104 (t • c) 00:44, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

MTA bus fleet

What should we do to end the edit warring? Olsen24 seems determined to add their own images no matter what, and doesn't understand why they're not the best quality. Mtatrain is also getting on my nerves a bit - they're acting a bit owner-y and aggressive as well.

I also think that some parts of the page have far too much detail. Information about individual buses (crashes, repairs, minor repowering) is generally below the threshold of an encyclopedia, with occasional exceptions (buses preserved in historical fleets generally have reliable sources to support them, and are also significant for their long-term historical value). Would you be okay with me removing statements like "4619 is out of service due to damage from an accident" and "4899 was originally equipped with a Navistar MaxxForce 9 engine, but was re-powered with a Cummins ISL9 engine."? Even if they can be supported with reliable sources, they don't add anything useful to article that should be a high-level overview. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:39, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

I agree with you regarding the detail. Those statements should definitely be removed. I'm also getting the feeling I should bring Olsen24 to ANI...if you want to bring both parties, that's your call. – Train2104 (t • c) 03:09, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

It would almost certainly be helpful if, instead of dropping 1000 templates on this user, you crafted a paragraph or two of human-written text, explaining in-context that their material has a textbook style and appearance and that is not what Wikipedia is for, and perhaps offering to guide them to understand the relevant standards and policies. --JBL (talk) 13:10, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. Spam templates

I just got through clearing out the spam queue, and noticed that you had tagged a lot of "templates" that were actually spam pseudo-articles for deletion. I noticed that some of those had been around for quite a while, might I ask how you found them? It seems we might need to keep a closer eye for that going forward. Seraphimblade Talk to me 01:51, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

@Seraphimblade: Going fowards, NPP of templatespace should be enough. I do it on a daily basis and find at least a couple things that don't belong there every day. As for how I found these, I ran a Quarry query to find single author template basepages created by users who (as of today) have less than 500 edits. Working down the list in order of increasing edit count, I'm finding lots and lots of crap (see the bottom of my CSD log) in the first several hundred entries. Some of it is spam, some of it is just misplaced articles that I've G2'ed, there was even a borderline attack page. – Train2104 (t • c) 02:03, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

Ok, got it - it seems to have been done. Johnbod (talk) 13:35, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Sapienza Travel

Hello Train2104. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Sapienza Travel, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Try AfD: promotional so it might be deleted there, but not enough for G11. . Thank you. TonyBallioni (talk) 17:46, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Please come and help...

Should MoS shortcut redirects be sorted to certain specific maintenance categories? An Rfc has been opened on this talk page to answer that question. Your sentiments would be appreciated!  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  18:16, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Deck Roof Subway Car 3662

I noticed you went to the Shore Line Trolley Museum before, since you uploaded a picture of the R17 controls. I was wondering if you could possibly go back to the museum and take a picture of Deck Roof Hi-V Car 3662? The reason is because that is the only example of the Deck Roof Hi-V left, and it would be an excellent idea to have a picture of that car so readers know what the car looks like. Commons doesn't have a picture of that car yet, so you may be the first one to upload a picture of that car.

In case you don't know what the car looks like, here's a picture: https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?6891

Thanks for finding all of those unregistered user pages...but my hands hurt from deleting all of them! Would you consider putting them on a user subpage so that they can be batch deleted later? They'd all have to be double checked still of course, but that way more people could potentially see them before they're deleted anyways. ansh666 18:53, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

Already done, I'm checking them as I go along and finding a few that shouldn't be deleted, so just running batch delete on it is definitely not a good idea. – Train2104 (t • c) 18:54, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Unless they get marked as "checked" or something. Because there's no problem with a page sitting about for another day or two, but it is much easier to just d-batch. Primefac (talk) 18:56, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, that's what I meant with it still having to be double checked. It's a lot easier for everyone to do it there rather than from the speedy categories. ansh666 19:06, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
@Primefac and Ansh666: OK, I'll just go through the list to check them, and let you know when I'm done so you can batch it all. – Train2104 (t • c) 15:18, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
@Primefac and Ansh666: I'm done checking now, feel free to delete. – Train2104 (t • c) 17:11, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
