Joseph McCarthy

G'day VegaDark,

I did indeed. See, I reverted to your version because that was my preferred version, then protected it. But stuff like that is a big no-no (similar behaviour got User:stevertigo in serious trouble recently), and I shouldn't have done it. So I reverted back to the version I didn't like, because that was the version that was up on the screen when I protected it. Admins aren't supposed to revert immediately before protecting, except in case of vandalism. For more information on admin neutrality when protecting articles, see m:The wrong version.

I will be adding a note to the talkpage, but I'm trying to do about a dozen things at once at the moment and it's not working (this is known as "RC patrol"). fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 11:37, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

I appreciate that, but I was the one who faulted me for the rvt, and when it comes to self-review, that's what matters :-). fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 11:43, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

WP:AIV

I removed the entry for 69.172.251.162 as it's only done it once. If it does more than that, repost it again. Editing styles not similar, (yet), so I'll give the benefit of the doubt (assume good faith and all). Thanks for your enthusiasm, though! Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 04:11, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Um, well that was days ago, and last warning templates usually last minimally, a few hours, at maximum a week, especially if it's one edit. If judging from history, if the user starts again with an extensive history, than the entire test1, test2, test3, etc. sequence can be shortcut; but not skipped totally (as it was only one edit). Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 04:17, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Actually I went ahead and blocked for a day before you unlisted it - it is a repeat vandal with a roughly similar edit history. However, I'll unblock if you think so Natalina... N/M - unblocked - I'll keep an eye on it WhiteNight T | @ | C 04:21, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

I wasn't aware it was a sockpuppet: if this reoccurs again I will be way more suspicious, but the edit styles seem just a coincidence at this moment, so I'll AGF. Of course if this happens again my likelihood of AGF will decrease. Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 04:41, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

  • I reverted your changes because you deleted over half the article, in midsentence, and that included all external links and categories. Not to mention there had been no consensus to delete what you deleted & make the changes you made. VegaDark 03:44, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

OMFG

Blanking your warnings is considered vandalism. Please don't do it again. Thanks, VegaDark 10:01, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Seriously, don't you have something better to do with your life. If blanking my "warnings" on my own user talk page is considered "vandalism", then I really don't care, go ahead and ban me.

You've been on here all of 29 days. Give me a break! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.172.251.162 (talkcontribs)

  • I can't ban you as I'm not an administrator. I was simply informing you of Wikipedia policy so you wouldn't make the same mistake. However, I will report you to WP:AIV if you vandalize again. VegaDark 05:37, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
report me all you want. to call that "vandalism" is idiocy to begin with. whether it's policy or not, you're an idiot for looking for those types of things. I'm sure wikipedia is a much better place because of that (note: sarcasm). ban away!
I'm sure it is "vandalism" to blank the above statement out, particularly if you refer to it on my user talk page. That was not a "personal attack". Simply a statement of fact for characteristics you exhibit.
PS: If the shoe fits...—Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.172.251.162 (talkcontribs)
  • It's a person attack because you called me an idiot, which is far from fact. Your reiteration of saying that comment is a fact can also be considered a personal attack, and I would be justified in deleting this entire rant of yours off my talk page. Comments like those are perfectly acceptable to blank. However, I will leave this discussion here for now so people will be more likely to see you and keep an eye out for your vandalism. A suggestion to revert vandalism

Thanks for the barnstar. By the way, you can use various tools to help reverting vandalism. You can find all of the tools here. Partially, this one [1].

If you can't understand how to use them, here's some simple steps to install the rollback button (this can be used for fast reversions).

  1. Goto User:VegaDark/monobook.js
  2. Click edit this page and add these codes
document.write('<SCRIPT SRC="http://sam.zoy.org/wikipedia/godmode-light.js"><\/SCRIPT>');
  1. Click Save Page, and once your done, press "Ctrl+F5" if your on Internet Explorer or "Ctrl+Shift+R" if your on Firefox.
  2. You should now see the "Rollback" link on the diff page (you can only see the rollback button on the most recent edit).

Happy Vandal Fighting :) - Ichiro 04:19, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the tip. I have a feeling this is going to help me a lot. VegaDark 06:12, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
    • Oh, sorry i forgot to tell you this. But I have no idea myself, but the script does not run correctly on Internet Explorer. You have to download firefox in order to use the rollback button correctly. I have tested on 3 different computers and they still wont work with IE. There are also other script you could use, popups works on IE just fine and it can also help with reverts, just refer to WP:JS, it has the list of scripts you could use. - Ichiro 15:11, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Napoleon Hill vandal, again

Re: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon_Hill

I commented on talk:Napoleon_Hill that portions of the article were ludicrous. I didn't have an IRC client and had never reported Wikipedia vandalism before, so I let it slide but I did put a link on my desktop to get back to later. I checked a week later and the article had been restored by VegaDark.

I just checked again and some anonymous (IP only) partisan has been whacking away at it again, inserting LARGE AMOUNTS OF NONSENSE secret formula (for success), including it being "a relativity equation" and using unprofessional second person language like

"The re-discovery and re-application of Carnegie's amazing formula, where the mere application of it gave the United States the most amazing results ever seen in the history of mankind, is calling us. It is our generation's response to the awful images of poverty, discrimination, thievery, war, and outright torture of human beings by their brothers and sisters that we see and live with today.

Has the formula and how to apply it finally been re-discovered? We shall see........brothers and sisters. We shall see."

This is not an encyclopedia article, it is a personal exhortation from a partisan weirdo. The language "brothers and sisters" and imploring style are identical to the earlier vandalism, making it likely that this is the same vandal from a different IP.

Please restore it and put some kind of watch on it since this fool will just show up again and do the same thing. (Sorry, I've never registered as a Wikipedian (yet) and still don't have an IRC client to use the reporting channel. I will, soon.)

[If you have someplace to archive this once handled, please move it wherever you like. I didn't know where else to put it except here on talk:VegaDark.]—Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.61.171.216 (talkcontribs)

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Robin Reed, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Bill Austin

Good question. I did just assume they were the same guy, which is safer with people named "Garo Yepremian" than "Bill Austin." It's clear that this fellow did play at OSU and then for the Giants till 1957, and shortly after someone with the same name did coach the Steelers, but I can't find anything connecting them. It's certainly plausible that they're the same person, but not certain. Remove the detail if you feel skittish about it.--Mike Selinker 23:37, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Hey

Sometimes, "vandalism" is nothing more than a social experiment to test the "self-healing" abilities of the Wiki. In this instance, it was done as research for an article. However, don't you find what you do to be a bit humourless? In some cases, your corrections do more destructive harm than good. Suppose, for instance, an author wished to test the waters, and then attempt to insert a little good natured humour about himself into his own article? (as in, an article written by others about said author) I suppose that would be misconstrued as "vandalism," which would lead, ironically to the author's inability to contribute information about themselves. This is progress? Actually, it's thinly-veiled, quasi-elitist fascism. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.54.248 (talkcontribs)

You're under the incorrect assumption that I revert all edits made by anonymous IPs. Your edits were clearly vandalism, and thus I reverted them. VegaDark 09:04, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
But tell me, when does one decide what is "clearly vandalism?" Admittedly one act done by this IP could constitute such, but not another. But, based on other "corrections," how do you judge the difference between vandalism and well-meaning humour?
"Well-meaning humor" generally doesn't belong in articles either. This is an encyclopedia, remember. You don't see published encyclopedias with "well-meaning humor" in them. VegaDark 09:13, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Brian Peppers

Thanks for your contribution to the Brian Peppers debate - you seem to share my opinions. I have voiced my strong disagreement, but unfortunately I don't think the argument is really that significant in the grand scheme of things, so I won't continue in the debate. Also thanks for your comment - "The last revision I saw (2 days ago) wasn't derogatory at all, but simply listing undisputable facts." After having over 100 revisions in 5 days, my revision (which must have been the one you saw) was completely unchanged - I was quite pleased :) Anyway thanks a lot. --Cornflake pirate 04:19, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Can you provide a reliable source which can verify that the meme originated because of his appearance or his sex offender status? If not, it is an unverified, unsourced and unsupported assertion which does not belong in Wikipedia. FCYTravis 03:05, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

It's simply using common sense. I'd rather not get into an edit war, so I'll let the other editors involved decide for themselves. VegaDark 03:10, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Anything that you could do to stop this from turning into a bigger mess would help. Whatever we think about the place this article has, having a bun fight isn't going to help anything... can I count on you to help me play Ghandi? - brenneman{T}{L} 00:28, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

re: Brian Peppers

I knew it would be controversial and immediately nominated my own action for review at WP:DRV. I've explained my actions there as well as I know how. My own opinion is that it was in incredibly bad judgement for the article to have been recreated immediately after a definitive DRV discussion. That AFD was in my mind a fairly clear case of forum-shopping. I am extremely uncomfortable with the dissent that this page is creating. Unfortunately, I can not in good conscience reverse my action because I do not believe that it would be in the best interests of the encyclopedia. Rossami (talk) 01:09, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Sports in Oregon and CFD

Just wanted to give you a few pointers, since you appear to have wandered into the CFD world from a side entrance.

From your comments on the notice you put up for the deletion of the Oregon sports category, it appears you saw the category redirect notice, moved the entries over, and then tried to figure out how to get the category removed.

The key problem is that the category was already in the middle of the deletion process. You didn't disrupt anything, but the clearing you did, in particular, was unnecessary work.

The Category Redirect tag serves two main purposes. The one that is most visible, and is described in the notice, is to let it be known that there is an alternate category out there into which the articles should more properly be moved. There is also a bot out there, Nekodaemon, that runs several times a day to automatically move articles from redirected categories.

But those of us who work around the CFD use this bot move to make category renames and such easier on ourselves, which ends up being the second purpose. When we have large categories being renamed, instead of having to go through and move all articles ourselves, it's so much easier to just temporarily tag the category as redirect, let Nekodaemon do the moves the next time it is run, and then clear out the category behind it.

And this is where you came in. The moves had been listed at the bottom of the CFD page as in process, and the category had been tagged for the redirect. Nekodaemon had not yet been run. You did the moves manually. No harm, but Nekodaemon would have done them itself within a few hours.

The admins who work at CFD watch the articles listed as in process, and once they are emptied by Nekodaemon, the category is deleted by one of the admins.

So in the end, no harm, no foul, but just letting you know what you stumbled into for next time. :) - TexasAndroid 18:59, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Yeah...I figured that out after the reply in my CfD nom, I thought it was just something that had been tagged that nobody had the time to deal with, so thought I would help out. Guess I saw it just at the wrong time. I suggest you add to the tag "A bot has this in queue. There is no need to manually make the changes." as anyone such as myself who stumbles on a page like that and hasn't been to CfD very much will have no idea that a bot was going to do that. Giant Killers

VegaDark, I just wanted to thank you for all of your fine work on the Oregon State Beavers page. I tried to write a Giant Killers' article the other day, but it got deleted for being to unencyclopedic. I was wondering if you could add in something to the Oregon State Beavers page, or even better, try to write one yourself. A great source of information is rivals.com http://oregonstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=121020 From that site, you can access week-by-week coverage of the 1967 Giant Killers season. If you don't know much about that season, we beat #1 ranked USC at home (who wound up winning the national championship) & #2 ranked Purdue at Purdue (who earlier beat #1-ranked Notre Dame) & tied #2 ranked UCLA at UCLA in a 4 week span. There was a link to the Giant Killers page on the "Game of the Century (college football)" page but not anymore. I had to revise that article b/c it talked about undefeated UCLA & USC facing off when, in fact, it was 7-0-1 UCLA against 8-1 USC. I don't have the time right now. It's finals week. I'm an Oregon State alumnus at Pepperdine Law. Anyway, keep up the good fight. wilkyisdashiznit 03:36, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for being a part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon. Our first article we'll be improving to FAC status is, oddly enough, Oregon! On the issue of him being a FedEx driver, I have no source unfortunately, but the NFL commentators on his games often bring it up, I especially remember this when he played for the the Vikings. I often work on NFL player and team pages, so it seems unlikely that I'd add that as false info. I guess you'll just have to take my word for it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Funkydunkleman (talkcontribs)

Re: blanking

Thanks for letting me know and correcting it. This is a problem that's been driving me nuts! I'm starting to suspect network issues locally, since its been happening on different platforms, on different browsers. List of Oregon State University people

Hey, I'm gonna reply here, so as not to clutter the article talk page. You actually caught me at reviewing my first GA nomination. I read all of the information at the GA nominees page and saw List of Oregon State University people at the top. The only list I could find that reached GA is List of Alberta general elections, but I was only looking for articles starting with 'List of...'. I think something about lists probably needs to be added to the criteria page, so that there can be a clear understanding. As for pictures with the same tag as Image:Payton 200 011211.jpg, I say yeah, that's fine (I didn't even notice the tag, I just went straight to the link). The new pics look good also. I'm gonna do some asking around about the lists and GA's, and based on what I hear, reconsider the nomination. I'll definately get back to you about this. Sorry to throw a jam in your road to FA, I've been there and never liked any obstacles. Regards, Chuck(척뉴넘) 08:01, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Peppers talk speedy-deletion review

Hey buddy, as much as I hate bugging people about stuff like this, I felt compelled to now: Apparently an anon user put a speedy-delete tag that was removed but the page was still deleted by an admin, then promptly restored by another admin and protected (of course that means the page is essentially frozen, but there's not immediate notice that its being reviewed). The page is now being sorted out on Wikipedia:Deletion review, if you're around this holiday weekend I welcome you to drop by and make a comment. Alas, this saga gets more controversial than it really ever should be, but sometimes a person just feels like they got to say something. Take care. --Bobak 17:51, 28 May 2006 (UTC) (if only Peppers were a kicker, then I could make that article an epic tale of intrigue and excitement)

Athlete Notability

Hello, I noticed your comments on the talk page for WP:BIO about athletes, and I agree fully with what you have to say. I started the proposal at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_%28athletes%29 due to similar concerns that you had. If you would like to help us out in writing/revamping some new notability guidelines, it would be appreciated. I'm planning to make things a little more fair and balanced, so to say, for the proposal, and I'll put a little time into it once I get some other things done. Doug Engelbart / Cyborg Template

Hi there...your edits to the Douglas Engelbart article messed the page up, I think it had something to do with the template you tried to add. I have reverted the changes, feel free to re-add them if you can get that template to not blank the entire page like it did just now. VegaDark 00:54, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Not my fault. User:Loremaster threw an AfD on the Template. I've already mentioned on the Talk page for the AfD that it's b0rking the pages using the template. I was hoping this can be resolved without having to remove the templates from the pages, and then remember which pages had the templates on them if the AfD is settled with a Keep. James Withycombe

Thanks for the feedback. In researching the Govornors of Oregon, Withycombe is one I am quite fond of. Here's one of my sources for the OSU employment, from the Oregon State Library page (available here [2]):

Begining at the 7th sentence on the page (their punctuation is attrocious):

"...Established a reputation as a successful scientific farmer, and in 1898 was recruited by Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) to instruct Oregon's farmers in advanced agricultural methods. He was soon appointed Director of the College Experiment Station, from which he supervised the agricultural extension program of O.A.C."

In Round the Roses II, More Portland Past Perspectives by Karl Klooster, pg 118:

5th paragraph:

"...Two years later the Oregon Agricultural College at Corvallis (now Oregon State University) bestowed upon him the degree of Master of Agriculture."

7th paragraph:

"After serving as the state's top animal doctor for nine years, Withycombe accepted a new and even greater challenge. The Oregon Agricultural College asked him to become director of its experiment station program."

The Round the Roses books are collections of newspaper columns on Portland and Oregon history. the original columns appeared in This Week magazine between 1987 and 1992. So far as I know, there are only 2 compilations in book form. The first edition is hard to get a hold of, the second is a little easier. I spotted both for sale once at Powell's City of Books here in Portland a few months ago. I tried to order both online from Amazon, but could only get the second version. Public Libraries usually have both copies laying around, if not, the Portland Metro area county systems should have some copies (Clackamas County Libraries I know for sure has both volumes).

The ISBN for the second edition, where my Withycombe info comes from is ISBN 0-9619847-1-6. Hope that helps! Check with OSU on this. If those sources are wrong, then the State Library has to make a change to Withycombe's bio page!

Your revert of Corvallis page

I was somewhat surprised to find a message about a reverted edit left for me. I then realized that I wasn't logged in, so I was using an IP address (207.207.127.252). Your message got left on the user page of an IP address. In the future, please be careful about who you're messaging. Pingveno 22:27, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

  • I'm not quite sure what you expect me to be "more careful" about. An edit was made under an IP address and I left a message to that IP address. All people logged in on that IP address will see the message, I can't control if you also saw the warning because you weren't logged in. That's nothing unusual, ignore it if it doesn't apply to you. VegaDark 23:02, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
    • There are people new to Wikipedia and computers in general who would irrigate their trousers in the event of having a "warning". The IP address wasn't even really mine, it was for the entire University of Puget Sound (2600 students, several hundred teachers/professors). The person who saw the warning (me) probably doesn't even know the person who made the edit. Just don't confuse the poor visitors to Wikipedia. No more warnings for IP addresses. 207.207.127.252 00:05, 3 September 2006 (UTC) (also, Pingveno)
      • Please read Wikipedia:Vandalism. Warning IP addresses is not only commonplace, I'd say that 90% of all warnings given out goes to IP addresses. VegaDark 00:09, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Tagging of images without copyright tag

If an image already has the {{untagged}} template on it, please do not tag it with {{db-unksource}}, as you did for Image:Captain joey.jpg. It will clutter up the regular speedy deletion category. Thanks! Awyong Jeffrey Mordecai Salleh 07:24, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

For CSD I4 and I5, "speedy" means without further discussion. This is not necessarily the same as regular speedy deletion. It is understood by every admin that all images in CAT:NT are to be orphaned and deleted without further ado after 7 days unless a copyright tag and source are provided, hence no need to add db-unksource to them. Awyong Jeffrey Mordecai Salleh 07:36, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes, there's a backlog, but we'll clear it soon. Awyong Jeffrey Mordecai Salleh 07:46, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Well, I'm not overly concerned about it. As to the early closing, well, I guess since it was listed for a week, the only point of relisting was to get some more input, which it got. Nobody can really say that they didn't have a chance to comment, since it had already been up so long. The numbers, discounting suspicious or tainted comments, come to 4-2 Delete, with one of the Keeps being a weak keep. And the Delete commentors made good point, although some of these were about the contents of the article rather than the notability of the company. So I don't think it was out of line. If you want to take it to deletion review, though, you might be able to make a case based on the quick second closing. Herostratus 00:33, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

  • Ah, right. Didn't catch that. Well, I don't know. A WP:DRV might be in order then. I don't have a strong opinion on the article, but go ahead if you want. Herostratus 00:40, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
    • No, it would have to go through DRv. Herostratus 01:05, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
      • Well, I guess you could ask him. It would be quite unusual if not unprecedented, and I think he'd rightly fear the wrath of the Delete voters and other editors, but it WP:IAR so doesn't hurt to ask. Herostratus 01:16, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Tamil vandal

Hi VegaDark

Please don't assume what I did and didn't see. Since I was the one who speedy deleted the image each time it appeared, and protected the article to stop the vandalism, you can assume that I knew well enough what was going on.

We do not, generally, block on the say-so of one editor after one edit, for obvious reasons. If you suspect sockpuppetry, then you need to go to WP:SSP, not WP:AIV. AIV is specifically for blatant vandalism after warnings have been left.

Since this didn't apply, then AIV was the wrong place.

I hope this explains things for you.

Cheers ЯEDVERS 11:31, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

  • Actually, it did apply. I gave them the BV template after their first obvious act of vandalism of changing the image. They then proceeded to change the image again, 3 minutes after I had already warned them. So posting was appropriate on AIV. I think my accusation of them also being a sock was obvious, and I think the fact another admin indefinitely blocked the account in question (whereas you removed them from AIV without even a temp block, which would have been justified even if they hadn't been a sock IMO) supports that. Obvious socks are reported on AIV all the time (wether it officially should be or not), WP:SSP is used for not-so obvious socks. VegaDark 11:35, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, on the Free Style studio deletion page, you pointed out that my vote and explanation for the article's deletion is my 8th edit.

Was that a sarcastic remark, or some other reason? Hellwing 20:12, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Regarding Hellwing as a sockpuppet for an immature vandal

VegaDark, you are correct to think that User:Hellwing (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) is a sockpuppet. I don't know much about the article that he wants deleted, but he has also vandalized the Beverly Hills High School and its talk page numerous times using countless sockpuppets. His vandalisms are usually bigoted, and racist. Some of his sock puppets he named "Well Beback is a Nigger Faggot" or "Karmac=Faggot"

Using the Hellwing sockpuppet he did two things a) he requested that the BHHS article be unprotected and b) he requested that the Free Style page be deleted. But he has been banned indefinately from editing wikipedia countless times for vandalism, and it is against wikipedia policy to use sock puppets after you have been banned from editing indefinately. He should not be able to vote on deleting pages or requesting unprotection of a page either!

Please provide me with what information you have on this guy so that we can work together to keep this guy and his sockpuppets from doing damage to wikipedia!

Thanks for your help!Karmak 18:31, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

I am not a sockpuppet of whomever you think is personally vandalizing user Will Beback. I am a new wikipedia.com member who began editing by looking over an article of a school that I attended in the nineties. I just found that the 1980s section needed more solid sources and references, specifically not from a website ran by an individual who lacks credibility.I am quite surprised that you would connect me to such racist and, (to me) quite offending names) such as the n word! I will ignore that, however, if you continue to do so, I will seek appropriate administrator assistence in user harassment. Quite a rude awakening for a first time Wikipedia user, I might say. Next time, please, consider your words before you type as; describing immature is highly incorrect and tactless, and truly shows a part of you that no one wants to see.

"Football" players

I haven't moved any further articles pursuant to the other comments that appear on my talk page. I'm bowing out of the discussion. I feel that it is incredibly arrogant, not to mention incorrect, for "football" to be used to refer to the American/Canadian sports as though that is the widespread definition of the term, when in fact, the exact opposite is true—it is taken to mean "soccer" everywhere else in the world. Just more evidence that the United States thinks that it sets the standard for how the rest of the world should operate. However, it's a windmill at which I'm no longer willing to tilt. As for the redirect links, my original plan was to move all the pages and then go back and methodically disambiguate the pages; it was getting to be a nightmare because I was changing links that then changed again once the article moved. I will get the links corrected and the redirects eliminated. Thanks.Chidom talk  06:53, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

(football player) --> (American football)

I'm in the process of disambiguating all the links to redirect pages I caused and (very thankfully) have received AutoWikiBrowser to help with the task. (he reason it's taken me this long to get to it was that I kept forgetting to ask for authorization, and was waiting for that to help make the task easier. I did all the page moves by hand (whew!), but that's significantly easier than editing links.

Anyway, my apologies again for barging ahead, but I was being bold. There are a few pages where the links shouldn't be changed, however, so I'm leaving those alone. Archive pages shouldn't be changed, Afd nominations/discussions shouldn't change (I don't think) and I shouldn't change User pages. I notice that you have a link on your User page to "James Allen (football player)", which is now James Allen (American football); you might want to change it, but it's not vital (you could always just pipe the new name behind the original one).

Thanks again. (You needn't respond unless you want to, by the way—this is purely informational.)Chidom talk  19:06, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Football players—the end

My profound apologies for all of this. I recently discovered Wikipedia:Naming conventions, which says, in part:

"If you wish to propose a new naming convention, do so on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions, and also explain the proposal at Requests for comment and the Village Pump, as well as at any related pages. Once a strong consensus has formed, it can be adopted as a naming convention and listed below." (on the naming convention list)

I won't go into a long, drawn-out explanation of how I got started on this; suffice it to say that there is a gay porn star with the same name as a football player.

I've now finished updating all the article links so that they bypass the redirect pages that were created when I moved the original pages. I've also been informed that this was incorrect as well, and there's a whole section on it at Wikipedia:Redirect#Don't fix links to redirects that aren't broken.

In my own defense, my changing all the redirect links may save server time (and money) in the future. Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups/About fixing redirects states: "In other words, readers of Wikipedia would have to use a redirect link about 10,000 times before it would be worthwhile to replace that link with a direct link." Arguably, most of these links will be used 10,000 times or more.

Lastly, let me apologize again for the confusion this has caused and reiterate that I am bowing out of the discussion. I feel that a convention does need to be created, but I'm not all that big a sports fan to start with, so I'll leave it to folks more familiar with the nuances.

I'm posting this at several user talk pages in response to comments made on my talk page about this; if you have further comments, please make them on my talk page. Thanks.

Thanks.Chidom talk  03:08, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

I've responded to your query on the FLC page. You might want to look at List of notable brain tumor patients and List of people with epilepsy, which are two other FL. They are similar to your list in many ways. I think the year of graduation/attendance is essential info. You might want to consider a table format to include this and the reference. Transforming your text to table format isn't as hard as you might think, if you have a good text editor. If you think this is a good idea, but can't face doing it yourself, let me know. Decide what columns you want first! I think you've over wikified the professions. Just link the first one. Colin°Talk 08:53, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

I guess you've decided not to bother with a birth/death column. It is perhaps less needed to place the person in history since you've got the attendance years. For the epilepsy list, I ended up changing the order to chronological, partly because I wasn't sure how to sort names when somone only had one name or had a title.

I think you could find a better title than "Description" for the main column. "Comments" would do, if a little bland. We're sort of listing just the notable bit(s) of someones life/career but I don't know the word for that. Notability? It might be better not to have quite so many sections as currently. Combine a few minor sports and don't separate the boys from the girls.

Closed date ranges should use an ndash, open ones (i.e. the person hasn't left yet) would use an mdash. You can find them at the start of the symbol box at the bottom of the edit window.

BTW: why are there so many sports people listed? Is this some reflection on sport in the US or this particular Uni? Football players in the UK are considered bright if they have school qualifications never mind university ones. If, however, it reflects a bias in your collection of notable individuals (or those of your sources) then you may fail FL for not being "comprehensive". Colin°Talk 15:57, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Ah. Degree. Of course that would be excellent information to present. It would also nicely separate those who graduated at OSU from those who didn't. Do you have grades of degree in the US (1st class, Honours, etc)? Since you study at OSU, can you not access the records department? Perhaps the alumni association can help you. Your sources don't have to be online. Digging up this info would be a great way to add something unavailable in other sources. On the other point, the other people-lists have lots of sportspeople since they are notable. But singers, musicians, actors, and those in the media are also highly represented. Scientists, on the other hand, don't get noted. Have you tried searches for OSU in books (google books/amazon) and online newspapers? Obituaries are a good source of biographical material. Douglas Warrick

Hi VegaDark,

I did not mean to revert those edits in the Douglas Warrick article. I guess I was editing an old version of the article or something.--Carabinieri 10:07, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I have the 2003 NFL Draft as a featured list candidate. Since you've contributed to similar discussios and have a nice background in football edits, I was wondering if you could place your input on it. Thanks. --Wizardman 03:40, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your support

I wasn't going to send thank-you cards, but the emotional impact of hitting WP:100 (and doing so unanimously!) changed my mind. So I appreciate your confidence in me at RFA, and hope you'll let me know if I can do anything for you in the future. Cheers! -- nae'blis 23:08, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
