re:UO/OSU--Oops! I can't help it. I grew up in Eugene and graduated from the UO. It's in the water. Nothing personal, I swear. Would it help if I said I can't stand green and yellow together? Anyway, I don't think Lundeen actually taught at OSU, and I don't think being on a board qualifies him as being faculty. Holdon--Category:Car-free Wikipedians

I placed this text in Category_talk:Car-free_Wikipedians:

Administrator VegaDarkhas already expressed her/his determination to speedy delete this category. Category:Car-free Wikipedians is not a clone of Category:Wikipedians who don't own cars. "Car-free Wikipedians" is not a "not-category" but rather about an affirmatiion of support for or adherence to the Car-free movement. In this, it follows the logic of the Straight edge Wikipedians category. The category links users to the Car-free movement article and to a movement that exists external to the Wikipedia community. Car-free Wikipedians could reasonably be expected to be interested in collaborating on the Car-free movement article and some of the several related articles listed in its "See also" section. None of this was true of the now deleted Category:Wikipedians who don't own cars.
Wikipedia's "speedy deletion" policy states that, "Where reasonable doubt exists, discussion using another method under the deletion policy should occur instead." There is reasonable doubt about whether the two categories in questions are substantially the same. Also, since Category:Car-free Wikipedians was created days before Category:Wikipedians who don't own cars was deleted then criterion G4 does not apply--it is patently not "A copy, by any title, of a page that was deleted." Furthermore, as the creator of both categories, I can state unequivocally that Category:Car-free Wikipedians was created as a good faith effort to address valid concerns about Category:Wikipedians who don't own cars, which I never voted to keep. Reasonable doubts exist, therefore, any discussion of deleting Category:Car-free Wikipedians--if such a discussion takes place at all--should not take place using the speedy delete method. --DieWeisseRose 09:25, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

  • A "copy, by any title, of a page that was deleted" does not mean it had to be created after the deleted category. And yes, I still believe this is speedyable as substantially similar. But, I see no harm in bringing this rename to UCFD instead, so that's what I will do when the current debate is closed. VegaDark (talk) 09:58, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

666 Satan

Hey, i got a guy Tokyo Manga909(i did the talk page cuz he doesnt have a userpage) proceeded to change all the articles of 666 Satan to O-Part Hunter, i have since reverted them back because there was(as far as i know) no discussion over if the page should be changed... if i made a mistake in doing so i apologise, but i swill thought i'd give you a heads up about it... his reason for changing it was "Because VIZ Media Changed it to prevent protests from religious or parental groups", also which imho was not a good reason as this is an English wikipedia not an American wikipedia... i hope everything is going good for you in RL and all that, have a good rest of the night/day if i dont talk to you before it is over....Ancientanubis, talk 23:39, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Language cats for Deletion

Oh, but there are so many more! Just in English, we have two cats for "Hibernian English" (it looks like somebody cleared out several more subcats there, but I can support — maybe — one); "Lazy English" (with six subcats); "New England English" and "New York English" (both with recursive problems somewhere); "Scouse English" (with one user); "Mixed English"; "US English" with six subcats (one of which is "Southern English", which is both silly and US-centric); "Canadian English" with four subcats; Australian English with eight subcats, two of which apparently deal with Aboriginal Australian and shouldn't even be classified as English at all; and "en-gb-3" tucked in under EN-3. It's the only British English cat, and if it is kept, it should be brought out to the same level as US, Irish, Australian, and Canadian English (which should be pared down to one cat each, maximum). My pref would be to nuke them all and just keep EN-1 through EN-5. There are also lovely cats outside of English, such as Category:User IntS and its five subcats for Internet Slang; Category:User en-cñ for Konyo, which doesn't even have an entry in WP (the link in the userbox goes to the Category page; Category:User tokipona and its five subcats, which also doesn't have a WP entry; Category:User sjn and its three subcats for Sindarian, a language created for Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, and on and on. I will nominate all of these cats for deletion if we get a consensus on the Californian English category. Horologium t-c 20:42, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

  • I've been looking forward to having these deleted, hopefully there will be consensus. I don't know if you will be able to get the LOTR languages deleted though, I've tried to have a couple of those deleted several times without success. Feel free to try, however.   • How many admins monitor that section? It appears that only a couple of you ever venture in there, which means that there are very few admins who can close these debates. There is another cat Category:User_AIM-Able that has been lingering since 3 June waiting to be nuked; every !vote was to delete it and its subcats.As to the LOTR languages, ask how many articles deal with the languages; if there aren't any, then the category serves no use. As far as I know, there are no plans to create a Sindarian version of Wikipedia. The same is true of Vulcan and Klingon (from Star Trek), and just about any other language created for a work of fiction. If I find them, I'll try to nuke them as well.   • I went ahead and moved part of my comment here over the the CFD board because the board needed a whack with the clue bat. 51 cats for one language is far too many, and I'm hoping that confronting the people discussing the issue with a figure that high may startle them into agreeing to some serious pruning.   • I just had a thought (a momentous occasion indeed). Instead of trying to delete all of the non-ISO categorized "languages", we might try simply merging them with the parent language categories. That might meet with a little less resistance. I went to ethnologue.com (which has a searchable database of ISO 639-3 cats) and took a look at the entry for French (re:fr-qb). There are five French variants that have their own codes: French (fra), Cajun French (frc), Picard (pcd), Walloon (wln), and Zarphatic (zrp). (I also searched by country and verified that Canada's version is considered to be basic French). Under that reasoning, your suggestion to delete both Canadian French entries would be correct, but a two-step merge might be easier, first to get rid of the duplicate category, then another one to merge all of the fr-qb cats to French. A similar merge could then be done for all of the variants of English. (I found another one last night, under the heading of Category:User au, without the mention of English. urg.) FWIW, there are three ISO 639-3 variants of English; English (eng), Scots (sco), and Yinglish (yib), which is English with a splash of Yiddish (including some of the grammar rules of Yiddish). The entry on Yinglish specifically states that it is always a second language, with English as the primary. Since Scots is already filed under sco (four cats), that leaves only Yinglish as a valid possible add (Yiddish is in there, but not Yinglish). Horologium t-c 04:33, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Help Please

I was editing some Alabama counties (Franklin and Colbert) when I noticed the Alabama state template messed up. I am not experienced enough to fix the problem. I am not sure what is happening but I see gibberish being created by it. I looked at the template history and still couldn't figure out what is happening. I have a question.

As I see in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Babel the purpose of user xx-0 category is to show that:

xx-0 if you don't understand the language at all. Use it not for every language that you don't know, but only when there is some reason why you might be expected to know it. For example, you may be of Italian descent, but you do not speak the Italian language.

I am exactly the case (just change 'Italian' in the example to 'Uzbek'), because I am from Uzbekistan and I practically do not know Uzbek. I understand some words, but cannot speak/write/whatever. So I want to state that on my user page in form of user box. Why do you delete it all the time, I wonder?

Hey VegaDark, long time no chat... how you been, whats been crackin etc etc well now that all the small talk is outta the way on to business(lol), i hate to be a tattle tale and i was planning on dealing with this my self (pointing out and guiding the "lost soul" on what he's been doing wrong and showing him how to improve his self) but upon deeper thought (and discussion with a fellow editor/friend) i have decided to report a 3RR violation, the user is GasSnake or Poison Oak and has been conducted on the page of List of O-Parts in 666 Satan(history), please let me know if there is anything i can do to help with this & or if i am taking the right steps/makin the right decisions with the events that are unfolding in front of me, criticism is always welcome:P thanks again, Ancientanubis, talk 03:28, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

September WPOR Collaboration of the Week

First off, great job to all WikiProject Oregon folks for last week’s List of Oregon State Parks work. We pounded out six new state park articles: Sarah Helmick, Bald Peak, Bob Straub, Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge, Tumalo, and Peter Skene Ogden. Plus numerous other edits to improve the existing articles. As a reward, we are introducing the COTW award {{WPOR COTW award}}, and this time it goes to User:Woodstein52 for starting three of the articles.

Fall WPOR COTW

This week, something a little different. With fall upon us, the photo ops are going to be harder to get, so we have a photo request fulfillment drive. Take a look at the requested pictures for Oregon category or the graphics subproject for what’s needed. The newsletter is back! Many things have gone on during the past few months, but many things have not. While the assessment drive helped revitalize the assessment department of the project, many other departments have received no attention. Most notably: peer review and our "workgroups". A day long IRC meeting has been planned for October 13th, with the major focus being which areas of the project are "dead", what should our goals be as a project, and how to "revive" the dead areas of our project. Contribute to the discussion on the the new channel (see below)

We decided to deliver this newsletter to all project members this month but only those with their names down here will get it delivered in the future.

WPOR CoTW: Don Schollander & Conde McCullough

Greetings WPOR world. Last week was great with the Barlow Road seeing lots of improvement, maybe even B class. Columbia River Plateau also saw some improvement, maybe enough to bump it to Start. On with the countdown, another two Stubs in the High category, both happen to be people: Don Schollander a multi-gold medalist; and then world-renowned bridge architect and all-around swell guy Conde McCullough. Schollander needs sources more than anything, and McCullough needs more of a bio, plus maybe a nice chart for the bridges with type/year/location/length. Featured List of the Day Experiment

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. Is this stub expandable and notable enough on its own, or should I just merge it for now and remove the link from the template? Well, I am guessing that it is a misprint. In looking at some OSU alumni pages ( http://alumni.oregonstate.edu/eclips/carry/feb21_2003.html), Jeff Welsch's "Tale of Oregon State Sports" book, and on the College Football Data Warehouse, I am thinking that it is Kennedy. New Year COTW from WP:ORE

Happy New Year to all the Oregon WikiProject People. A big round of applause for everyone last year, we got a lot done. A thank you to everyone who helped with the last Collaboration of the Week, I saw a large number of articles in the unassessed section and our total number of articles is over 5000 (we were around 4000 in June when the assessment program finished the initial run) so I know at one person was busy tagging. This week we are back to a High importance Stub article the one and only max security prison, first prison, and only one with a death row in the state, the Oregon State Penitentiary. Bellotti v. Riley

I don't think either should be there too, but someone else added Bellotti. I do think Knight should be there are founder/main person behind the state's only Fortune 500 company. As to criteria, it has been subjective with people pretty much adding whomever. My personal preference would be to limit it to Top & High importance articles. Oregon COTW

Howdy to WikiProject Oregon members, time for another edition of the Collaboration of the Week. As you may have already noticed, our flagship article Oregon is up for the third time as we make a push to get WP:GA status before going for WP:FA. Since this will take some time to get where it needs to be, this will be the COTW for more than just a week. Also, so we hopefully don’t trip over ourselves, try to coordinate on the article’s talk page. Once again, to opt out or suggest future collaborative efforts, click here.

On another note, just a general good job/pat on the back to the project for a great 2007, the first full year of the project. We had 83 DYKs about Oregon, improved one article to FA, and went from around 4 GAs to 17 GAs. Plus numerous new articles, improvements to existing, the introduction of the COTW, and the introduction of article assessment at the project. Again, great job and here’s to a new year. Category:Roger Rabbit characters

I was in the middle of declining the speedy delete here when we were edit-conflicted! I was checking the nominator's contributions and saw that the nominator emptied the category less than 1 hour before putting it up for speedy deletion, rather than 4 days ago. To allow time for other editors to see whether the redirecting of character articles to the main list is appropriate, I've restored the category for now - it can (and I suspect will) be deleted in 4 days' time if it's still empty. Isaca/Ahsahka

It's really mostly a strong hunch. I wasn't able to confirm it for sure. But the only links to Isaca (other than the professional organization which makes searching really difficult) are from wikipedia and databasefootball, which self-replicate throughout the Internet forever. There doesn't appear to have ever been a place called "Isaca", and the pronounciation of "Ahsahka" would be the same, so I was bold.

I have seen dbfootball make phonetic/typographic mistakes before (for example, with Len Younce where they list his birthplace as Clayton instead of Dayton). An obit with birthplace of Carlson is what we need, but I couldn't find one that I didn't have to pay for.

Closing UCFD discussions

Of course there are no admins available to close the discussions; they're all too busy sniveling about Category:Rouge admins to be bothered with actually doing anything useful while they're in UCFD. This is the same thing that happened in December, and I thought that my last comment to Mackensen might catch someone's eye, because we have the same situation right now (admin category up for discussion, backlog tag in place, regular admins have already participated in discussions), but it apparently didn't make much of a dent. Clown COTW

Greetings once again to members of the best encyclopedia online about Oregon (aka WP:ORE)! Last week we improved Neil Goldschmidt to close to GA level, and moved the Wells Fargo Center from Stub to Start for the Collaboration of the Week. This week we’re clowning around with some bozo from Oregon, Pinto Colvig, and then in an attempt to garner another DYK, the rather stubby Cooper Spur. Hey, is this what I think it is?

A little while you blocked User: Parable1991 for 24 hours. Virtually, the first thing he does is to post a comment on my talk page. Not that it really bothered me - its probably some 8th grader hopped up on Code Red Dew or some such.
I wasn't even bothered by the freakishly inaccurate edit summaries (1, 2) of User:Dumrovii.

What stuck out were the similarities between their editing styles and methods of speaking. They don't ever edit at exactly the same time, but Dumrovii defends Parable1991 unhesitatingly, and in some pretty inaccurate ways. Am I seeing theatre? Depopulating categories

Hi. I have depopulated Category:Wikipedians interested in books with the exception of User:Java7837/Userboxes, which I just can't seem to give the boot. I know that the categories are transcluded from User:Java7837/archive1. I have removed the category from that page and refreshed both userpages. The archive has been removed, but the other page is still there. Thanks for your comments. What I am saying is that you don't go to an old reproduction paintings shop and walk out of it without the shopkeeper's permission, just because the original painting is over 70 years old. Why shoud people walk to a website and grab a digital reproduction without the site owner's permission. After all the poor chap has gone into some trouble and expense to provide the digital image. The least that people can do is to ask the web owner "may I have a copy of this image on my site?" Populated deleted categories

Regarding your comments here, I think so... Trying to repeatedly empty such categories may be more trouble than it's worth, especially when there're only one or two people in the category. If the category contains many users and thus clutters up Special:Wantedcategories, perhaps they could be routinely emptied as general cleanup (e.g. "removing deleted category - Special:Wantedcategories clean up").   • I would consider running for bureaucrat eventually, but probably not anytime soon. Law school is very demanding and I would want to be able to devote the time necessary to do the job properly. Recently I haven't even had the time for much RfA participation, which I would want to have a lot of experience in prior to an RfB so participants could better gauge how I might make promotion decisions. In a few years when I am out of law school, and if the need for more bureaucrats arises again, then I may throw my hat in to the mix. As for you, MS, and BF, I agree that either of you would make good bureaucrats, but as BF states on his talk page, their current lack of activity at RfA is likely to hurt their chances. I don't think our involvement of contentious UCFDs would necessarily hurt us though, as I feel almost all of them have come to a correct result that the wider-community (i.e. the vast majority of people who don't even participate at UCFD) would agree with, as shown by the usual DRV endorsements of such contentious categories. I am in email conversation with the administrator of the school, but as the vandalism, which I oversighted, was rather minor, I'm unable to divulge information to him about its content. Sorority and Fraternity Categories

Thank you VegaDark. I realized that I had inappropriately recreated these after about the 10th creation. I am working the process of contesting the ruling which you referred to, currently with the Admin who made the recommendation for deletion in the first place. I'm contesting this ruling because I feel fraternity and sorority do provide for collaboration in the same way alma mater categories provide for collaboration, as opposed to the way high school categories don't. Hopefully I'll get this overruling turned, as I know in organizations where the physical locations are so spread out, the histories so poorly kept (though not always), and the membership so intimately knowledgeable about the subject matter (along with the subject matter having a great bearing on the history of the United States and the development of its leaders) - collaboration on developing and maintaining articles for these organizations is vital, and I am currently having a difficult time finding other Wikipedians who are also in my organization to help me develop my fraternity's page in a truthful and encyclopedic matter, as often it is also more difficult to do such tasks like this for organizations like these unless you are in the organization and have access to the documentation needed. Old Buildings and Pictures

Greetings from WP:WikiProject Oregon. Blah blah blah. This week we have our semi-annual Picture Drive and a article creation drive for the NRHP List. For the picture drive, go take a picture, or find a free use one (lots of links to gov sites above) and upload it Wikipedia. For the National Register of Historic Places, find a red link on the main Oregon list or one of the county lists at start a new article. User Box Categorization

Thanks for the heads up regarding the user box problem. I had grabbed that particular user box for Firefox from one master page listing the various sorts of browsers used by Wikians, so perhaps it's worth someone checking those to be certain the format is correct. Thats really odd, I removed it because when I clicked on it, it would take me to a page that says that "this page does not exist" or something like that, and I clicked on it about 4 or 5 times... unless you fixed it... because it works now... -- Itsmacko (talk) 05:13, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

I see you nominated a category I created for deletion. It would've been nice if you'd have notified me about that. Looking through your contribs, I see that you've been neglecting to do this, especially recently. While not explicitly required, please remember that a category's creator would, after all, be the most likely to have an interest in the discussion, so again it would just be nice. Thanks.   • As you said, it isn't required. I try to alert creators when I have the time, as a courtesy, but sometimes I forget or am too busy to do so. In any case, editors should watchlist categories they are interested in retaining. VegaDark (talk) 22:54, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Jèrriais Wikipedia

Actually, a Jèrriais (well, pan-Norman) Wikipedia already exists, with nearly 3000 articles. The Jade Knight (talk) 04:45, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

The inclusion of all the Norman "languages" in a single Wikipedia was somewhat controversial. It's for this reason that a logo (after all this time!) has not been selected for the Wikipedia. In Jèrriais, Wikipedia is "Ouitchipédie". In Continental Norman (Cotentinais), it's "Viqùipédie". At least one article there has been translated separately into the two dialects, and virtually every article (and/or section) is marked with a tag identifying it's dialect. I for one have trouble understanding Continental Norman (though not Dgèrnésiais). I do not know if this is the case for native speakers, but there is a tendency within the Normannophone world to speak of Jèrriais, Dgèrnésiais, and Continental Norman ("Nouormand d'la Grand' Tèrre", as it is called in Jèrriais) as three "languages". Certainly a case may be made to call Insular Norman a separate language from Continental Norman on several counts, though the two remain largely mutually intelligible (much like, perhaps, Danish and Norwegian).
The request for a Norman language Wikipedia was actually initially simply for a Jèrriais Wikipedia, and was supported unanimously except by one individual who wanted to see a pan-Norman Wikipedia. The request was changed duly, with the reasoning that while the various "dialects" may be distinct enough to be considered languages and to have their own Wikipedias, Norman speakership is small enough that it would be most effective to encourage cooperation in this regard. The Norman Wikipedia is actually the first pan-Norman publication in existance, to my knowledge (though Jersey and the Continent have rich literary traditions going back centuries). This decision has not been, however (like I said), without dispute, and some dislike the fact that the Norman Wikipedia to date has been dominated by two dialects (Jèrriais and Cotentinais). One last note: The only way the Norman Wikipedia manages to survive is its efforts to treat all dialects equal. In other words, all tags exist in all dialects where there is interest (so stub tags fit the same dialect as the rest of the article, etc.) If the decision were to make a cat: for Norman speakers, not simply Jèrriais speakers, it would need, for the same reason that the Norman Wikipedia needs tags in all dialects, to be translated into each dialect. So, ultimately, you'd end up with the same number of language tags here, though fewer categories. There also might be some resistance from Jèrriais speakers who generally think of themselves as speaking "Jèrriais", not "Norman". The Jade Knight (talk) 03:06, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

And you are clearly not deferring your judgment to me; I decided to change my Wikipedia creation request to appease one (non-Norman speaker) who voted on the issue, but mostly to try to encourage additional participation in the Wikipedia. March 14 OR COTW

Hello again or welcome if you are new to WP:WikiProject Oregon! Last week we did a picture drive and a NRHP creation drive. It’s hard to track the picture results, but I know I saw quite a few pictures added, so great job. With NRHP we added 7 that I saw: Mitchell Recreation Area, Salem First United Methodist Church, Portland City Hall, Crater Lake Lodge, Central Library (Portland, Oregon), Watchman Lookout Station, and Alvin T. Smith House; with most now nominated for DYK’s! So great work everybody.

This week, its back to stubs with one of the largest newspapers in the state, The Register-Guard, and a request with Oregon Coast. Feel free to help with either one, and the paper article is so short a DYK should be pretty easy to get (just need 5X expansion). Re: User HTML, User CSS, User JS, User C and User asm

Makes sense - I only really figured out how categories work after I created them, so I must have gotten it wrong.

Btw. It looks like many the "User *" programming/scripting language related userboxes use a wide variety of ways to create the output. Some use templates, others use hardcoded div's. The color schemes seem to vary as well. I may at some point try to consolidate all of them into a easy to use set of templates - I may have some questions about the categorization at that point, do you know enough about it to be able to answer questions I may have? (It may be a while before I get to this though).
