Edit in Binghamton, New York article[edit]

Hi! I see that there was an issue with a reversion that I had made to one of your edits on the Binghamton, New York article. It appears from your username that you are directly related to What's Goin On, Binghamton?, which is the media source which you are trying to add. According to Wikipedia guidelines for WP:COISELF, if this is the case, then you are unfortunately not allowed to add the media source to the article. If you disagree with my assessment that this is a self edit, then what I propose is that you prove notability (WP:N) by finding some third-party source describing What's Going On, Binghamton? as a notable media entity (please keep in mind that this source must meet the requirements of WP:SOURCE). Without the third-party source, and without any further discussion, I'll assume that the change is indeed a self edit, and delete it in five days.

Feel free at any time to Google or Bing What's Goin On Binghamton to see the extent of the work and the impact on the area over the last year. "Non-notable" is a slant and couldn't be farther from the truth.

While that's quite commendable, I'm afraid Wikipedia's notability guidelines are very clear on requiring a reliable third-party source. Such sourcing is required to maintain the encyclopedic quality of Wikipedia. Having third-party verification prevents any form of bias (please see WP:WHYN and WP:NPOV). So go to the company website, look at the posted media materials and stories that have been done. Do a little research. I did, in fact. As a resident of Greater Binghamton, I honestly do think that the work being done by the company is a great addition to the community. However, as I said before, the content of the site itself is not enough (and neither is my own personal opinion). In order to prevent bias, and to prove notability, reliable third-party sources are required, and original research is prohibited (WP:OR). I have myself tried to search on Google to find such a source, but the only links that come up are for the site itself, some LinkedIn references, and a couple of sponsorship mentions, none of which are valid sources of proof. Oh my - that's really worrisome. I have a feeling when our monthly emagazines come out that this will still be blocked, considered not "notable", etc. Time will tell.

Well, I wish you the best of luck with your site. As Wikipedia is not a platform for advertisement, the e-magazine in itself will still not establish notability. However, if the e-magazine prompts reliable sources to discuss your site, then it may be a candidate for inclusion in the article. This isn't so much a block as it is an evaluation of the current state of affairs. As that state changes, re-evaluation will of course be warranted. However, please keep in mind that as you have a direct relation to the site, you should not be the one to re-evaluate this inclusion, but that other, independent Wikipedia editors will determine whether the site merits inclusion. Well, thank you for the wishes. But as you know, this is a don't change, don't evolve, don't go out after dark kind of town. And gosh help you if you try to do something better than something else previously established in the area, or worse - actually succeed. When changes come (hopefully for the better) to the area, the common thing to do is cringe, hide or keep the change away. (Not saying that you are doing that, not at all) A great case in point is that when our sister publication Triple Cities Carousel first came out, they received a letter from an established independent paper in the area basically saying, "nice newspaper, if you want to know how it's done (right), just ask us". Laughable. This town and it's thinking (lack of) are it's own undoing.

I agree. Binghamton's pessimism can be quite disheartening at times, and I honestly feel that it's a big part of what's holding back the community from a serious revitalization. Here's to hoping that you guys can make some meaningful dent in that! It seems as though Triple Cities Carousel has indeed been making a positive impact, so it sounds like you're onto something here.
