Hi to all[edit]

Montanabw, Fylbecatulous, Gronk Oz, Atsme, This is my new account. I'm working on redirecting my old userpage to the new one and moving my old talk conversations here (probably going to archive all the WAM talk messages and then do a move on the archive page so I can still have a record of them). Moving my sandbox and other stuff here too. White Arabian Filly (talk) 19:52, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

From a mare to a filly?[edit]

They say the aging process is really just a reversal. 😆 Atsme📞📧 19:59, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ha yes, I didn't want numbers or something after the name and you can't use the same one as before, even though it was me...White Arabian Filly (talk) 20:01, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You could use White Arabian Mare with a capital M.... 173.228.123.250 (talk) 00:16, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I did try that, but the system wouldn't allow it because it was too similar to the old username...they won't allow anything too close to keep people from impersonating admins and such. By the way, if you don't have an account, you can create one for free (no need for email or personal details like birthday or real name, at least for now) and we'll put you to work at WikiProject Equine if you like horses. We have lots of articles needing improvement and not a lot of active members--only about 10 out of the 30+ listed are active by my count. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 00:34, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I know about accounts but prefer editing without one. I wonder whether an admin or bureaucrat could bypass the similar name restriction for you, if you still want the other name. You could ask at WP:CHU where the bureaucrats hang out. I'm not actually a horse person--I only remembered that old Saroyan story from ages ago and thought you might like it. 173.228.123.250 (talk) 06:18, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but I'll probably stick with this name. It's close enough and technically, I could have my signature still say "mare", although I won't because I prefer sigs and names to match up. By the way, I put that book on my list to look for at the bookstore. ☺ White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 14:43, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sparkleponies[edit]

Loved the Parelli one! LOL! Speaking of Sparkleponies, did you know about this: die to laugh!. I did NOT know that a sparklepony was a special type of participant at Burning Man (there somehow has to be a wikipedia article in this). Montanabw(talk) 04:14, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ha, I never saw that before! I have the feeling there are probably similar revisions in the histories of all the natural horsemanship articles. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 14:53, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It gets even better: [1]. Montanabw(talk) 09:01, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

LOL! That reminds me of my only experience with natural horsemanship. Several years ago, not long after I got my horse, somebody I knew tried to talk me into going to a clinic being held at a private farm by a Parelli "Certified Trainer". It was free to watch, but participating with a horse would cost $75 an hour. I didn't know a lot about Parelli at the time, so I decided to go watch. I'm very glad I did. The trainer was this young girl who had two very nice Morgans, a mare and a gelding. She didn't ride them, just made them run around and around in circles in the pen at the same time. She also made the mare rear up by shaking the "carrot stick" at her. When she tried to make the mare back between two logs, the horse got confused and started rearing up again. The trainer would only use body movements because "horses don't understand words", but the horse didn't understand the movements. And those were her own horses. 😛 I was extremely glad I hadn't taken my horse (he's very good about following commands when he understands them, but he gets mad and frustrated if a command is blurry or confusing, which is partly why I use voice commands with him) , and I left before they got to the students' horses. (I'm glad I did, after seeing the Pat Parelli 'Catwalk' video and Linda Parelli whacking that half-blind horse in the head on YouTube.) White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 16:29, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I had to try (and failed) to retrain a horse trained with "Parelli methods" - an Arab that figured out the seven games probably the first time and then got bored, then got pissed, and then came to me... by which time he had learned to intimidate his owners and put a twist on every technique ("Follow me?" OK, with ears pinned back, two inches from you...). I think he just wound up a pasture pet, unridable, un-tie-able, would cow kick if you tried to brush his belly, flat-out dangerous horse. THANK YOU!!! I'm so glad to finally have some pictures for those articles. 😁 White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 15:17, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm thrilled that we now have an image of a "big lick" walker and was glad to see one of the sources verified that he passed the USDA inspectors to boot. Though I trongly favor the flat-shod movement, I think that NPOV also demands we illustrate both. Montanabw(talk) 22:08, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Both are interesting to me; actually, there are several different divisions with varying degrees of action in between the two, like plantation uses a little heaver shoe and has more action than just flat-shod. (I think there's a video on YouTube that shows five or six different kinds of shoes being used on the same horse at different times, and how they changed her gait. It'd be nice if we had pictures of each one.) I was glad to see that he clearly passed inspection as well. I've heard both arguments, for all-natural and for the Big Lick, and I think the best way is some of both. I don't really want to see the Big Lick get outlawed, because I worry about what would be next to go; it'd be Saddlebreds, racehorses, Grand Prix jumpers, or somebody else, because the animal rights people wouldn't stop there (to them, riding in any form is horrible and unnatural--gag, and I don't want some nut coming out to my place and telling me I'm torturing my horse because I'm riding him around the yard). I especially think Saddlebred people are pretty naive if they think Peta is going to ban the Big Lick and just let them alone (I can just see some Peta member getting ahold of a picture of an ASB prancing around.) On the other hand, there are some great flat-shod breeders, but unfortunately a lot of them that I've seen are Parelli-ites and only care about producing skinny little palominos and pintos, who they sell for "hunter/jumpers, or good for barrels". Because of them, the old style TWH like Midnight Sun is dying out. A sort of compromise is the plantation and park horses who have a little heavier shoe but are not as exaggerated as the Big Lick horses. It's a complicated issue, but from this year's Celebration results it looks like it may be clearing up a little bit. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 23:40, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My own view is that the TWH people refused to police themselves and hence they are subject to federal law because of it. Their "slippery slope" reasoning about the PETA crowd is a logical fallacy that they use to avoid any reform at all. There is a place for a protective pad and for a slightly weighted shoe, but there are clear limits. I personally favor the current amendments to the HPA that would ban heavy chains and all stacks - frankly if that hits the Saddlebred, Morgan and Arabian people, too bad... (They pulled a four-pound shoe off an Arabian at Scottsdale a couple years ago; Arabians can have brilliant action with a 14-ounce shoe and a 4-1/2 inch toe, Arab Park had brilliant-moving horses well into the 80s before they changed the shoeing rules). I guess my rule is that if you can't safely turn a horse loose for turnout in a paddock due to their shoes, those are shoes they should be questioning. You can show a horse how to move with proper training if they have the aptitude, and even in flat shoeing and light pads, you can use weight distribution and hoof angle to add enhancement. Teahouse[edit]

Hi White Arabian Filly. I hope you don't mind, but I removed a part of your response to a question at the Teahouse, since it's a public forum and I don't want to draw undue attention to that contributor's age. I think the proper procedure in this case is to directly forward the matter to the Oversight team in private, so I will send them an email about it right now (see WP:GFYE). Thank you for bringing it up, though! Mz7 (talk) 01:57, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Mz7. I don't mind your removal of the comment. I was just worried that the user, if they are in fact that age, shouldn't be broadcasting it to the world. Wikipedia is not a dangerous site in particular, but there are predators and creeps everywhere. I don't have email, so I can't email Oversight committee, so thanks for doing that. Next time I'll bring it up on the contributor's own talk page. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 02:24, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I really appreciate that. All diffs that mention the information have now been suppressed. Mz7 (talk) 02:27, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Template suggestion[edit]

I'm sorry to use the following template - but it's actually formatted kinda like what I was thinking for the Equestrian Events, using the breeds as the section headers and linking them all together. See this one for formatting: [3]. If it isn't at all what you had in mind, that's ok, too. Atsme📞📧 23:21, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think I did a bad job explaining what I'm trying to create 😛. What I had in mind is more like a cross between Template:Infobox horse race and Template:Infobox music festival. I see it as being used on the top of each individual article, like the organization Infobox is used on the AQHA and TWHBEA articles. Also, I moved it to its own subpage: User:White Arabian Filly/Template:Infobox equestrian event. You're welcome to edit it. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 23:37, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you need a whole new infobox template (infoboxes only used on 3-4 articlesget TfD'd also, by the way), I think we can jigger the parameters of existing ones (and I know the king of the template editors who can help). I do think that navboxes to join things like the cutting events are cool, though.

(Pinging Atsme & Montanabw) The infobox is launched on the TWHNC article. Hope you can both see what I'm talking about now. It's my idea that we can use this on Quarter Horse Congress, the NCHA events, Scottsdale Arabian show, Devon Horse Show, Morgan Grand National, etc.etc. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 02:18, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see what you're talking about. It's an event infobox like what's in the articles,World Series and Super Bowl. Atsme📞📧 02:51, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Right! I'm afraid I did a crappy job of explaining it. I should have written it out on a piece of paper, taken a picture of the paper and uploaded it instead. But that's why I thought it was needed; there are quite a few show articles besides the ones I mentioned above, like the National Horse Show and the World's Championship Horse Show for the Saddlebreds (don't know if there's an article for that one, but there should be) that it could be used on. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 03:09, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

need to be able to put an image into the infobox itself...I'm getting what you are up to now. Montanabw(talk) 07:43, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I put the image in the box at the top. It's under the logo parameter but using image parameter screwed it up. Anyway, it's there! White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 15:52, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Toss logo perhaps. I'll also ping RexxS to see if he can offer further suggestions; he's helped with other infoboxes. Montanabw(talk) 21:09, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The correct template, call-up parameters to copy-paste, and notes are located on their own subpage: User:White Arabian Filly/Template:Infobox equestrian event. This way if it works out it can just be moved to template space. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 22:45, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Equine navbox[edit]

Just an fyi not to overdo the placement of {{Equine}}, the equine navbox. We tend not to use it on individual horse or event articles. While I personally think it could go into most horse articles, there is a big, huge argument out there about navbox navbox bidirectionality going on right now, and I'm trying to lay low and not draw attention to "our" template because it contains a few list articles links that are two clicks away from the navbox - precisely the thing that's the big debate. So it would be a real bad idea to put it into a lot of articles that aren't linked in the navbox at all (we could create a horse shows navbox, though...) There's a bigger issue that some folks in navbox land seem to think navboxes should be as narrow as categories, and I don't agree with that, either, but I'm not on the winning side so...lay low. <wink>

I removed it from a couple of other articles I'd added it to. I've been trying to find stuff on Google books to use for sources (found some really good ones for a couple of the articles) and have been busy with RL too. It's been very warm here, so maybe I can keep the horse in work over the winter and then possibly show next year if I can find a decent saddle that fits me and him (most saddles narrow enough for his little squirt body have stirrups too short for my legs, and most saddles with stirrups long enough for me have too wide a tree for him...and going the handmade way costs too freakin' much).😉 White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 16:43, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have a 'Walker, or...? What kind of saddle (western, saddle seat, ....?) Montanabw(talk) 04:19, 6 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
He's a Quarter Horse/Mustang cross. It's a western saddle. However, I have found out there's a horse and tack sale at the stockyard on the first of the month, so maybe I can find one there. There's also a big trade day about 50 miles away where they sell saddles sometimes. I'll find one somewhere! (I don't really want to buy over the internet--I want to see it and hopefully sit in it first.) White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 14:24, 6 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question about photo on Mountain Pleasure Horse article[edit]

Hello! Thank you for contacting me about the Mountain Pleasure Horse page. I just added a paragraph that I feel is an important summary of some of the information that was removed for being "too homey". The paragraph I added is brief and written in more formal style. Also, the current photo appears to be a black walking horse, not a mountain pleasure horse. It is definitely not a good representation of the breed. How can I get a more appropriate photo (or 2) added to the article? Again, I thank you for your attention to the Mountain Pleasure Horse entry.MountainPleasure (talk) 01:47, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MountainPleasure, I agree with you that the horse looks like a Tennessee Walker (a breed I'm very familiar with). However, it's the only picture on Commons that's labeled Mountain Pleasure Horse. If you have any pictures of MPHs you've taken yourself or have the copyright to, you can upload them there and we can use them in the article. It's a constant struggle to find good photos because of the copyright licensing stuff (can't use anything without the photographer's permission, and most people who take halfway decent pics don't give them out for free), and most of the articles have pretty bad or no pictures at all. Thanks for your creation of the article, I had been thinking about writing it myself because I am interested in the American gaited breeds. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 01:56, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Queued![edit]

I sometimes build prep sets for DYK and because I hadn't worked on your newest article, so I could promote it - and did - to prep set 4: [5] I think this means it's going to hit the main page the main page the afternoon/evening of December 15 (but I am not great at calculating times for stuff not already in a queue...and sometimes the admins shuffle the queues for reasons of their own). I meant, on my userpage. Can I put it somewhere on the article itself? White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 02:08, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Project tip[edit]

Don't double-post race horse articles to WPEQ; there are nearly 10,000 horse racing articles in the horse racing project and as a rule we put articles into either WPEQ or WP Horse racing, but not both. There are a few exceptions (notably Equine drug testing) but not many (not even Darley Arabian, lol). It's mostly a maintenance issue; we don't have enough horses to really manage the 3000+ articles in WPEQ as it is...  ;-) (and most of us horsey fools are members of both projects anyway...) Montanabw(talk) 19:51, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I won't do it again. I guess it's also something of an interest thing: a lot of people who watch horse racing don't even have horses, they just like it. I've never actually seen a live race in my life (I've lived in the same state all my life, and as far as I know we don't have a single racetrack). I do try to watch them on TV, but it's hard to find any except for the Triple Crown and Breeder's Cup, and a few of the summer races at Saratoga, unless you pay extra for cable channels! (Which I don't, because I don't have time to watch most of it and sometimes you can find the stuff on YouTube anyway.) White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 20:40, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, absent premium channels, NBC and FOX sports are it. If you live in the south, your closest tracks are probably Oaklawn Park and Gulfstream Park -- and of course, anything in Kentucky! But horse racing is only legal in 36 states, I think (Georgia is trying to legalize it, but so far without success). I've had good fortune that it's legal in Montana, even if the races are at the "weekend at the county fair" level. We do get some interesting horses up here from time to time, there was a gelding who was a son of Giant's Causeway running here last year and a daughter of Scat Daddy the year before. But FYI, all the California tracks have a live feed here (wink) and it's totally free ( I use a free spam-receiving email address to access it ) . Ok, thanks! I don't know if I can skim the picture (I can't figure out any way except to copy-paste it and the phone won't let me copy just one thing; I have to copy EVERYTHING on a page) but I will definitely use it as a source. I'd like to get some of the articles to GA, but I've had TWHNC up for peer review for over 2 weeks and no takers...😑 even though I PR'd 3 other articles and more or less suggested to two of the people that they consider doing mine. I have found a lot of good stuff on Google books as well, there's a book called Horse Breeding in Middle Tennessee that has really good stuff too. autopatrolled permission[edit]

Hi White Arabian Filly, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the patroller right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Katietalk 15:18, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, KrakatoaKatie. I understand that it doesn't give me privileges over others and only reduces the workload for new page patrollers. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 15:23, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Untitled[edit]

Hi there. I have joined Wikipedia to correct the horrific edits that this carmakita1010 has made to Carsen Grays Wikipedia write up. It's been axed so terribly it is nowhere close to the original write up. Is it possible to post the original write up?...

Mamafixit Mamafixit (talk) 18:20, 24 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mamafixit, the only way I know of to correct the vandalism and bad editing is to go through the page history and find a place where the article was correct. Then you can get somebody with rollback rights to rollback all the bad edits. (I don't have rollback: it's a right given only to users who have demonstrated that they remove a lot of vandalism and are not going to go around removing edits they disagree with but are perfectly good.) To do that, you may have to ask at the Teahouse. Or you can simply rewrite the article yourself. Carsen Gray is a living person (see WP:BLP) so we have to use special consideration when adding things to her article. In BLPs, you can't say something controversial without having a reliable source to back it up. The best place on the internet to find reliable stuff is on Google books or news; most of what is on there is good. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 20:44, 24 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Season's Greetings[edit]

Wishing you a Charlie Brown
Charlie Russell Christmas! 🎄
Best wishes for your Christmas
Is all you get from me
'Cause I ain't no Santa Claus
Don't own no Christmas tree.
But if wishes was health and money
I'd fill your buck-skin poke
Your doctor would go hungry
An' you never would be broke."
—C.M. Russell, Christmas greeting 1914.
