User talk:107.1.99.186 has discussion archives

I have discussion archives and I can't write in the discussions in the div and can't type sigma and Cobi hasn't been editing in 30 days. You need to operate WidrBot so it can archive my discussions. --107.1.99.186 13:24, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

Recent block

Hi, thanks for blocking this IP. However, you forgot to notify them about the block. I've done so for you, but just wanted to drop you a note. Cheers. 24.91.249.202 (talk) 00:23, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

Notifying blocked user

@Widr: Please see Notifying the blocked user. I've noticed here and there that you are not leaving a notice on the blocked user's talk page about the block. The template serves as a notification of the block, instructions on how they can appeal the block, and for any additional action by a subsequent admin. You blocked User talk:73.96.83.16 on August 22, but did not leave a block notice on their talk page. As a consequence, they just continued to edit, but did it on their talk page, which was reported at RFPP. I sort of jiggled a template a little to give you credit for the block, but also notifying them that their talk page privileges were revoked. — Maile (talk) 20:43, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

Reverted back to the anonblock template (also tp access revoked now). Widr (talk) 21:12, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
OK. The anonblock template wasn't there when I saw it on RFPP. I guess it got lost in all the reverting and re-reverting by whoever. Thanks for taking care of it so quickly. — Maile (talk) 21:23, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

A Favor

Would it be at all possible if you could hide the edits made at Evolution of cetaceans from 13 August 2017 to 28 August 2017? On the 13th, an IP-hopping, longterm vandal who's been putting in "derpwhale" vandalisms put in a fake reference that has a link to a malware site, and today, I undid that, but then it was brought to my attention that readers looking through the edit history can still access said malware site.--Mr Fink (talk) 00:21, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Silvertears123

Hi Widr, Could I ask that Silvertears123 be's unblocked please ?- Only simple reason is that having searched "Melissa Bell" online she has actually died - The edit could've been done better but unfortunately it wasn't vandalism, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 16:58, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for kindly unblocking and again my apologies (although easy mistake to make), Anyway thanks, –Davey2010Talk 17:40, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Widr. The block you placed on 2600:387:2:803:0:0:0:B0 has run out, but it appears they are back and doing what they did before. Blocking this person does not seem to be having any effect, so perhaps WP:PP will be a better way to prevent any further disruption. Perhaps all of RickinBaltimore's archive could be protected since they seem to be the pages targeted by this person. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:40, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Somcable Telecommunications

Hello, I see you dealt with User:Somcable Telecommunications a few months ago. We have a new contributor User:Somcable Provider Telecommunications with a similar editing pattern. I've reverted the edits but I'm not really sure how best to go about investigating or reporting this sort of activity, so any advice or help would be welcome. Thanks, Certes (talk) 23:49, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Just letting you know, I already updated the Finnish download peak to the main chart on Look What You Made Me Do here, but it was changed again. The commented-out message underneath was not in relation to the Finnish chart, it was in relation to another user removing the French chart beneath it. Ss112 19:48, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

... is with all probability Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Benniejets, and since it geolocates to Croatia (and not Italy, as one would expect) it is also probably an open proxy (the edits from 30 August, 06:01-06:33UTC on 31 August and all edits made 3-5 September are Bennie, but the other edits don't look at all like Bennie). So I've had them on my watchlist for a couple of days, to see if they would do something that would really give them away. Just FYI... - Tom | Thomas.W talk 17:34, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello Widr! I request you to block Special Cobtributions/82.32.116.24 for CheckUser and anonblock. He keeps reverting my true edits and I am not lying. With love, Freightcar2 (talk) 22:28, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

  • Seems like Freightcar2 tried to block the IP themself, by adding a block notice on their talk page, and a CU-tag on their user page. Which together with their behaviour in general here hints at a lack of competence... - Tom | Thomas.W talk 20:59, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
    • I've got my eyes on this one, the more I look, the more it appears that there is a sockfarm of a globally locked sockmaster. Will probably raise a SPI over the weekend. Thanks for ignoring the request, Widr. I've suggested a remedy at talk:Air India, which will be put into action Monday morning should Freightcar2 fail to respond to the request for sources to back their edits up. Invitation to Admin confidence survey

Hello,

Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

Blocks

Do you even do your own check before acting on an AIV report? Why on earth are you blocking accounts such as Special:Contributions/67.43.19.24, which has made one edit and no filter logs in five months and was last given anything higher than a level one warning in 2015, or Special:Contributions/169.227.254.9, which has made only one edit (and two filter logs on the same edit) in four months, with no warnings higher than a level one since then? You really ought to know better than that, and I recommend that you go back through all the blocks you made based on that IP's AIV reports and give a good hard think at which ones are actually justified, then unblock the ones that aren't. Ks0stm (TCGE)  If you reply here, please ping me by using {{re|Ks0stm}} in your reply.  19:34, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for asking, and yes, I check them. Those are school blocks or anon blocks. Most have gone straight from one block to another with escalating lengths. When we have months/years worth of clear evidence that there's nothing constructive coming, the bar for (re)blocking should be lower. At least by common sense, which is what I use. Widr (talk) 19:50, 15 September 2017 (UTC)
I feel like it's a philosophical difference between us. I'll rarely block for an unconstructive edit every few months, even with a couple past blocks, while your threshold seems to be much lower. To me, reverts are cheap, while blocks potentially block good faith contributors as well, so for infrequent vandlism I'll just revert and warn instead of issuing a block, which I save for spurts of vandalism. I think for me it goes back to if every admin issued school and anon blocks left and right like they're a dime a dozen I wouldn't be here; I got started on Wikipedia making anonymous contributions from school, and a school block of my school would likely have never had me get my start editing. Ks0stm (TCGE)  If you reply here, please ping me by using {{re|Ks0stm}} in your reply.  20:02, 15 September 2017 (UTC)
Sure we all could just warn the vandals up to level 4 once a week and let them always get away with it without ever getting blocked. I don't see how that would benefit the Wikipedia and its reputation, though. It would be waste of time for everyone, especially for those of us who try to keep the site clean of vandals. Innocent school kids can always create accounts at home and then log in. These blocks only prevent anonymous vandalism. Widr (talk) 20:18, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

ANI

At ANI there is a report of what looks like a hacked page, and I don't just mean vandalized. The thread is "something strange". Tornado chaser (talk) 17:31, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

No idea what that's about. Widr (talk) 17:37, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
Whatever it was has been fixed, but there is nothing in the edit history to suggest there was anything wrong. Tornado chaser (talk) 17:43, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
The problem apperes to have been a vandalized template. Tornado chaser (talk) 17:58, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) Yeah, that was my thought too when I started reading your posts. Does the template need to be protected? - BilCat (talk) 18:45, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
It's been protected by now (see the ANI thread). Widr (talk) 18:47, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Widr, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 14304 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a day.
  • Currently there are 532 pages in the backlog that were created by non-autoconfirmed users before WP:ACTRIAL. The NPP project is undertaking a drive to clear these pages from the backlog before they hit the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing a few today!

Technology update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on creating a new filter for page curation that will allow new page patrollers to filter by extended confirmed status. For more information see: T175225

General project update:

  • On 14 September 2017 the English Wikipedia began the autoconfirmed article creation trial. For a six month period, creation of articles in the mainspace of the English Wikipedia will be restricted to users with autoconfirmed status. New users who attempt article creation will now be redirected to a newly designed landing page.
  • Before clicking on a reference or external link while reviewing a page, please be careful that the site looks trustworthy. If you have a question about the safety of clicking on a link, it is better not to click on it.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

Non contrivirsial move

What made you think that moving Bosnian Genocide to Bosnian genocide was non-controversial? [2]

Also why did you not move the 9 archives when you moved the talk page Talk:Bosnian Genocide/Archive 9?

-- PBS (talk) 16:23, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

Probably because of the rationale linked in the diff. As for the archives, no idea. It's hard to remember why I didn't do something 17 months ago. Widr (talk) 16:48, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
Please move the archives across (per the guidance in Wikipedia:Moving a page#Talk subpages).
Just because someone asks for a non-controversial move does not mean that it is non-controversial. The question is whether the subject is a proper noun or a description. That is a very big change and for subjects like genocide and they are always controversial, so it needs a RM to decide if a move one way or the other is justified. -- PBS (talk) 07:30, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

Requested Intervention on Westerhout 5

Widr, There is a new editor who has just reverted the article for a second time on Westerhout 5. I have explained why thus was reverted twice, stating the name given is not common nor cited. I'm sure this added name is fictional, and a simple Goggle reach finds nothing. I'm unsure how to act here without a 3RR violation myself. The edits are here.[3] Could you intercede here please. Thanks. Arianewiki1 (talk) 08:31, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

Admin needed

This page was made by a vandal. It will be self explanatory once you click on it:https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Propane_and_Propane_Accessories&redirect=noPocketthis (talk) 16:11, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) As an admin, I can say that is definitely not made by a vandal. If you feel that the redirect is not needed, you're welcome to open discussion with the user who made it. only (talk) 16:16, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I'd agree it's a valid redirect - but it is a bit obscure, and relies on prior knowledge of the show in order to understand. Blimey - a lot of stalkers around today, eh? Chaheel Riens (talk) 17:44, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
  • As a registered member for 7 years, I can tell you that this is a "Hank Hill" commercial. We don't sell Propane accessories on this site last time I checked. Users and vandals have been messing with the "Propane article" for years promoting that show. Time to end this nonsense. That edit to make the Hank Hill link, created that "Propane accessories Page". Pocketthis (talk) 17:56, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
    • again, you're welcome to raise those thoughts with the user who created it, on the talk page for the redirect, or in an WP:RFD. This is not vandalism though and no admin action is needed at this time. only (talk) 19:23, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
