Dim and recent past[edit]

Remember your query about Progsofts seeming to be editing about both NBA Loans Group and a SA company at the same time? Thanks for that. I've added a note to their user page pointing them out as being a sock of a sock of Morning277. That SA stuff was a several months deleted article they were using as a template. There's only one real way they would have had a copy of it.... Could be an idea if you see that sort of thing again to search for the title that it would have had (= the company name...). You can rewrite the page in your own words, using the website your previously copied as a source. However, since that site is associated with the team that O'Keeffe played (or was it coached?) for, you'll want to find other independent sources as well. Good luck. I can't add citations because I don't know where you got your information. That's for you to do. In general, though, what you have written is not an encyclopedia article, but would be more appropriate for a business or IT trade journal. Its purpose seems less to inform people about an existing technology than to exhort them to adopt a new technology. While that is a worthwhile communication, it is not the purpose of Wikipedia. To answer your points in order:
  1. I have no relationship to the Senator. I'm a software engineer living and working in New York and could really not care less about Nigerian politics.
  2. Whereas this is a free website to which anyone can contribute information, it is not an anarchy. There are rules and guidelines, and all users are expected to conform to them.
  3. Yes, there is a problem with that (feeling like having your own page). Please read the Wikipedia policy on content forking. Basically, you don't get to create your own page about a topic just because you don't like what the existing page says. Multiway data analysis[edit]

Also I am struggling in writing an article titled "AVESTA computing issues" (recommended changing to Automation issues of accounting). May be I am receiving diversity of comments of the subject matter so I have to change the article very frequently in order to fit for different comments. When I am reviewing the log records, I am feeling impression of the version changes look like Hong Kong "typhoon signal 10". Hope you can help me to improve the articles in a way that can be accepted by most of participants. You're welcome for the assist on multiway data analysis. Based on the available literature, this appears to be a notable topic worthy of inclusion at Wikipedia. Unfortunately, I do not feel the same about your AVESTA computing issues article. There is already an article about accounting software, and perhaps there may need to be an article about accounting automation, but your article is not it. It is too much of a "how-to" guide, which is not what Wikipedia is about. I have added my !vote for delete at its AFD discussion.
As a side note, I notice that your grasp of English is not the best, and I suspect that you are writing English as a second language. You might do better editing the Wikipedia in your own native tongue. There are Wikipedia versions in almost every language on earth. The complete list is here. The phase "Multiway Processing" is part of my everyday life. When I planned to write the second article, I searched on this phase but finally adopted Multiway data analysis. Surprising there are a lot of researches working on this area, also surprising that I cannot find similar researches specialize in finance and accounting. No. Although there is information in the XBRL article about how XBRL works, that information serves primarily as an example of the concept. The difference between that article and yours is that yours included a fair amount of language of the "you should do this" variety. I believe you have been addressing that, but I still think the article is a too broad and scattershot to be useful. There does not appear to be a clear focus, but rather a general "let me put down every thought I have about this topic, and maybe a logical organization will present itself". AVESTA computing issues and original research[edit]

ok, I will try to improve this on continuing basis particular to remove something like "you should do this". In fact the original focus at the beginning of writing is so called six A-V-E-S-T-A computing issues now I cannot work in this ways when some commentators claim that this is constituted original research. Now these computing issues become individual examples within the big pictures of the Accounting process automation. However, the whole article are focus on the titled Accounting process automation, there are two competition forces I have not yet clearly mentioned in the article. They are 1) driving force for evolving advanced technology of automation and 2) driving force for more extended expectation and scope of automation. The winner of the competition is highly depend on the rate of changing for internal and external environment of organizations. Need to obtain more evidence from existing literature when I don't think only me can have this insight. But the winner in the past shall be attributed to software providers of spreadsheet tool and non-spreadsheet tools when users are struggling moving amongst them due to reducing useful life of these softwareMgt88drcr (talk) 16:04, 5 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, the English in the above request is a bit muddled and hard to sort out. You mention that your initial focus for this article was "A-V-E-S-T-A computing issues", but I have no idea what "A-V-E-S-T-A Computing" is. Is it a company? Is it a computing paradigm? Is it something else? Whatever it is, you appear to have shifted the focus of the article to cover the field of accounting process automation as a whole. So then you move on to discuss two competition forces (a phrase I don't necessarily understand), including:
  1. "driving force for evolving advanced technology of automation"; and
  2. "driving force for more extended expectation and scope of automation"
Both of these phrases are somewhat generic and, like much business jargon, largely devoid of any real meaning, so it is impossible to assess whether there is any point in actually investigating these two forces further. However, you go further to indicated that it is your own assessment that has identified these two forces, in which case your article is based, at least in part, on original research. Finding sources that verify your own conclusions is not really what Wikipedia wants. Instead, we need to find sources that have actually arrived at those conclusions on their own, in published (and preferably peer-reviewed) publications. The last phrase or your comment ("But the winner in the past shall be attributed to software providers of spreadsheet tool and non-spreadsheet tools when users are struggling moving amongst them due to reducing useful life of these software.") appears to be largely meaningless, so I will not respond.
In general, muddled and incomprehensible English aside, what is needed is evidence that there is general agreement in the published literature about the issues involved in migrating a business to an automated accounting process. If this article is simply your perception of the issues involved, then the article is original research, no matter how well your perceptions are cited. It's original research because your perceptions might be incomplete, or might be taken out of context, etc. We need evidence that the migration process has been the subject of significant research, and then we can write an article based on that research. I suggest you copy the page to your user space (at User:Kaganmeijer/EcoMagnesia, perhaps) so you can retain a copy after the mainspace article is deleted. Without reliable sources, the article has not demonstrated the notability required to remain on Wikipedia. While you are translating the page, you can look for reliable sources that will show evidence of significant coverage for this organization. Chris, unlike those other sites where one is encouraged to create a profile for oneself, that is not the case at Wikipedia. We require that subjects of articles here be notable, as evidenced by significant coverage in independent sources. IMDb, LinkedIn, etc, are not considered reliable or significant. You'd need to show evidence that your work has been noted and covered in independent media, such as trade journals and the like. Unfortunately, for the majority of people working in the trenches of the film industry like yourself, such significant coverage is not common, so it is unlikely we will have reliable sources to verify any of the information in your bio, and therefore it is not likely to be allowed to remain. I didn't change the information you posted on the Toshiba Libretto. Although I considered undoing it, another user took care of it instead. The information you added there (about the Pentium overheating problem) requires a reliable source. I did remove the change you made to Luck (film), as that was also completely unsourced, and also seems out of place. If the web page I cited was a copy of your own work, then I presume your own work was previously published elsewhere, and the copyright probably belongs to the source where it was originally published. (Most journals do now allow authors to retain copyrights to submitted articles.) Bush School[edit]

Hello WikiDan61. Thanks for being on top of keeping Wikipedia of the utmost quality! I want very much to contribute and add to the knowledge on the site and I feel that I have some accurate things to add about the Bush School. I want to proceed with caution as I do not want to trip over or break any rules so please help me to understand how to go about properly editing the page for the Bush School safely.

I am eager to add to and correct out dated information on the page as the warning at the top of the page that it is written like an advertisement concerns me as it is a not for profit organization.

I have to admit I am a little confused about why there is an issue with the mission statement. It is taken from the school website and I notice that a similar school (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyndon_B._Johnson_School_of_Public_Affairs#Mission) also has a mission statement on their Wikipedia page that appears to be "approved". Maybe it is because I forgot to add a reference at the bottom? I do agree that the page as is sounds a bit biased so I want to go in and clean that up. It just seems that my first step is in the wrong direction.

Please direct me to any editing guides or best practices that I may have missed on how to edit the Wikipedia page of an organization.

If you'll read the essay WP:MISSION, you'll see why Mission Statements are a poor idea. In general, every organization has one, and in general they are written in broad platitudes that rarely help the reader know anything more about the organization, and the are (somewhat by definition) self-serving and promotional. Now, while it is a fine thing for an organization to define a mission statement and to communicate that mission statement to its customers, investors, donors, etc., all of that falls under the realm of self-promotion, and has no business at Wikipedia. If other articles also include a mission statement, that is a matter of improvement for those articles, not a reason for this article to include one.
Since you are eager to help write about the school, I suggest you read up on Wikipedia's policies of neutrality and verifiability as well as the copyright violation guidelines. In a really tiny nutshell:
  • write in your own words, using other websites as sources of information, but not of actual content;
  • keep your writing neutral, avoiding any attempts to promote the school or "make it sound good";
  • make sure you have a reliable source for any information you add, especially information that is likely to be challenged.
I think you'll notice that, since you contacted me, Cindamuse (talk · contribs) has done some excellent work in cleaning up the article. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball and cannot include articles based on what may or may not happen in the future. Given that It's Tomorrow has not even begun filming yet, and that no individual associated with the project appears to have any particular notability, there is no way of knowing whether the film will become notable or not. Even if it does, it may well be Rajsingh's only notable accomplishment, in which case (per WP:BLP1E) the best we could hope for would be a redirect from his name to the article about the film. I have edited Calgary Catholic Immigration Society to address these concerns, but the issue of sourcing still remains. You have relied entirely on the organization's own publications, rather than any reliable, third-party sources. Please see if you can find any of those to help bolster the notability of the organization. Without reliable third-party sources to verify the information in the article, it might well be deleted. As a passing administrator, I've looked at it and I can't see any good reason to undelete. If some claim to notability can be made, maybe. Being a "budding Social Worker and Public Health Adviser' isn't enough for me, and "He is a much acclaimed journalist also" is far too vague without proof in reliable independent sources WP:RS. I've had the same argument with others at various times. And if the article contained any meaningful text, I'd have found a different criterion for deletion. But the article appeared to be little more than a random stringing of words together, somewhat along the lines of your second example. Some groupings of words could have been wrangled to make sense, but overall, there was no amount of cleanup that would have resulted in a coherent article. To pass (or do I mean fail?) the nonsense test, it must be bad enough to be rejected by a surrealist poetry club. Being bollocks isn't in this one. Nonsense here isn't like Edward Lear's stuff - it's total gibberish (or stuff that even a Gibber wouldn't understand), worse than a Google Translate of a Japanese advert. Something like "Still warthogs run deep" isn't nonsense (and it's the title of a book in my collection, even - very funny poetry...). I rarely delete under nonsense, and even less often tag for it. At my manager's suggestion I worked with him to write the basics about my new career. I would seek your help in allowing my page to remain as my charities are benefited by my voice being stronger, which believe it or not is the reason I have begun an acting career. Frankly the entire notion scares the hell outta me. "Salvation" was in approximately six or seven film festivals, yet as you mentioned none of true note. It did however get into the Dances with Films Festival and premiered at the Chinese theater. "No Tell Motel" did play at Cannes, not sure if that matters as is was not competing. I have a principal role in "Seal Patrol" (Redbox) which comes out February 11th, it was given the "Lion's Gate" stamp when purchased by them for distribution (link below). "No Tell Motel" (Lead), (Netflix, Redbox, iTunes), was the #1 independent horror for redbox in the fourth quarter of 2012. Somaly Mam is a dear friend and former sex slave, we work together to end child sexual slavery in Cambodia, Australia, America, and beyond. I visit Cambodia yearly, with AnnaLynne, and selfishly I might add, as the time with these little survivors (they're quick to correct you if you call them victims of slavery)is healing me. Either way, if you and others feel I should wait, perhaps you're right. If I become someone of note in the worlds' eyes that's great, but frankly, whatever. My major ambition is to help those who do not have a voice, It has been since I was small. While it may well be true that your charities will benefit if you have a larger "presence", it is not the role of Wikipedia to provide you that presence. That would be promotion, and it is expressly forbidden at Wikipedia. Also, even if your article is allowed to remain, it will not be yours to control, so while you may wish to have an article that enhances your public image, there is no guarantee that will always be the case. I suggest that you find other avenues to promote your blossoming career, and if, at some point in the future, you have reached the point where there is sufficient significant coverage in reliable sources upon which to build a legitimate article about you, someone independent will almost certainly step up to write it.

Contest to Speedy Deletion of PiVi & Co[edit]

Please explain to me how my article is "promoting" this company. All I am writing about is what apps they have made and a little bit about the apps. I don't believe that this is "unambiguous advertising", as I am just making an article on the "products" of said company, not advertising it. If you can clarify this that would be greatly appreciated.

The article consisted solely of a short, non-neutral blurb about the company, and a list of their products. The cincher was the talk page, which included a plea to all editors to assure that if articles were written about the apps, they should link to the company. While that would already be normal practice for a notable company, the specific request for such links smells of an attempt to bolster the notability of the company. If you disagree with the assessment and the subsequent deletion, you are free to contact Coffee (talk · contribs), who actually deleted the article, or to request undeletion. So what you are saying is it was the talk page and what I had put there, that ended up getting it deleted. If I were to change what I had put in the talk page would there have been an issue with the article, as I really don't want to be banned as the deletion of this article added the second deleted article that I had made.

To expand: when writing an article about a company, it would be best to start with the history of the company, some indication of their financials, their market impact, etc. The list of products produced by the company, if given at all, should be given low prominence. Since this company appears to be notable almost solely for their FatBooth app, it may well be that the company doesn't merit inclusion at all. (See WP:ORG.) Wikipedia is not a webhost, so making a private purpose wiki wouldn't really be in keeping with its purpose. There are sites that are set up just for that purpose. I would recommend Wikia (http://www.wikia.com). They allow you to set up a private Wiki on any topic you like for you and your classmates to share information. You're not the first to ask. I've never wanted the mop for a couple of reasons:
  1. I'm an admitted deletionist, and I like the idea that there is always at least one other pair of eyes looking at the articles I tag for deletion.
  2. I don't always have the time needed to review and research issues thoroughly as I would need to as an admin.

Entirely your choice, of course. As to your point 1, I and a nukber of other admisn follow the "tag and bag" procedure, meaning that I don't delete a page unless some other editor has tagged it (except for blatant attack pages and very clearcut copyvios). If I find a page I think should be speedy deleted, i tag it for anotehr admin to review. And of course, much of my editing is not with my admin hat on, and it is only when acting as an admin that extra attention and research are required. Think about it when you have time, perhaps. (Personally I am a mergist if anything, but more inclusionist then deletionist. Notability guidelines inquiry[edit]

At the top of the page I created is the message "The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's notability guideline for biographies." According to the criteria at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:NGRIDIRON he needs to have played in only 1 professional game to be considered notable- he's played professionally for 6 years. He should be considered notable because although the leagues he played in were not listed, they are considered on Wikipedia pages as professional, (not semi-pro, minor league or amateur), and therefore top-level. I have over 20 sources from major newspapers, official league sites and official statistics sites recognizing this. You may not have read the guideline carefully enough. WP:NGRIDIRON actually states:
American football/Canadian football figures are presumed notable if they
  1. Have appeared in at least one regular season or post season game in any one of the following professional leagues: the Arena Football League, the Canadian Football League, the National Football League, the third American Football League, the All-America Football Conference or the United States Football League, or any other top-level professional league.
  2. Note: Players who play in minor or semi-professional leagues (such as af2) are not presumed notable unless they meet another criterion, such as notability arising from their college football days.

You are mistaken about that. "The Indoor Football League is a professional Indoor Football league created in 2008 out of the merger between the Intense Football League and United Indoor Football." Rutherfurd Hall page[edit]

Hello, I understand that the page Rutherfurd Hall was tagged for speedy deletion. It is a public school & museum, the only public school with an attached museum in NJ, and it has been developing its programing since 2010. The municipal bond that authorized its passage passed with overwhelming support, and they have an incredible volunteer network and a great dedication to preserving the history and culture of the site.

Is there a particular part of the article that requires editing? Most of the content is co-located on other Wikipedia pages, and additional citations are to be added by the volunteers building and curating the collections.

The entire article, from top to bottom, read as though it had been written by the institution's PR firm. It has been deleted now, so I can't go back and reference any specifics, but any time an article includes an invitation for the public to come visit the facility, or uses first person language ("our facilities...", etc), it is a red flag that the purpose of the article is more to promote than to inform. You would do well to look at articles about other schools and museums to see how they are written. A good place to start would be to read the WikiProject School article guidelines and their list of articles by quality. Using the guidelines and the sample articles, you should have a better feel of how to write the article about Rutherford Hall.
Please also keep Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines in mind. As someone associated with Rutherford Hall, you must be extra careful to maintain neutrality. Wikipedia generally discourages editing about subjects to which you have a close connection. It is not strictly forbidden, but your article about this subject will be given extra scrutiny because of the similarity of your name to the subject. Denholme Clough Fault[edit]

I notice that you have changed the capitalisation of this page (I didn't create it, by the way). "Denholme Clough" is the name of a place, and I think should have initial capitalisation as does Hebden Bridge. The article is about a feature with the name of "Denholme Clough Fault", as in Craven Fault System, and so I think that "Fault" should also be capitalised. Actually, I didn't delete anything. Only Wikipedia administrators can delete articles, and I'm not an admin. However, I did tag both Lasha Kicks and David Gogokhia for speedy deletion because they do not appear to meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion. What you need to do to demonstrate that these, or any other topics, do merit inclusion is to show that they have been the subject of significant coverage in reliable and independent sources. This generally entails showing evidence of coverage of the topics in the mainstream press. Coverage that is national rather than local is preferred. Coverage in English would be preferable, but is not required. For bands or musical acts such as Lasha Kicks, coverage at websites such as Sound Cloud, Discogs, etc, is generally not sufficient, because these are often just profiles written by the artists themselves, and as such, are not independent. The same can be said of IMDb. If Solokhuteuli is a nationally-broadcast television program in Georgia, than any coverage in national press for Gogokhia's involvement in it would be a good start. If Solokhuteuli was not nationally broadcast, but was rather a regional or online-only program, than it may be unlikely to find the type of significant coverage of Gogokhia that Wikipedia would want. I don't block ORGNAMEs like this on sight (absent other username-policy violations) because I don't consider them per se equivalents of intent to promote or role use. In my experience getting emails from these people (and I get a lot) even if there are many people involved they usually set the account up themselves and use it only themselves (Account names that clearly imply intended promotional use and/or use by multiple people, like "Consolidated Amalgamated Widget Company Marketing and Promotions Department," for example, are different and I do block them on sight). Many times there's only that one person involved, anyway.

Also, sometimes users will want to express themselves by choosing such a name. To me, WP:AGF says we shuld give new accounts the benefit of the doubt until they start editing. I mean, have we even checked to see if this one is a real organization? (It probably is, but in the capacity the edits would suggest, it might not be). Wasted Time[edit]

I see not point in adding information to an existing article if it is only removed and parts of my contribution used in the description without acknowledgement whatsoever. You are right the two descriptions were really close however reading them explained the difference. The Taking of my information without acknowledgement is not acceptable, if editing was required before inclusion or other edits were required I should have been informed and allowed to make those. Total removal of my info without contact and taking parts of it and using it without asking is plagiarism! I do not think I will waste my time trying to add anything else to this site and I will advise all I come into contact with to do the same. The second reference was added after I tagged, I think. There was only the IMDB. The problem was that the References and ELs when I tagged were not really adequate. They were either self-editable, like IMDB, of dubious neutrality, like his publisher, interviews with him, or reviews. Per the WP:BLPPROD policy page: Only add a BLPPROD if there are no sources in any form that name the subject. In the case of Carville, there was one inline citation and several external links that mentioned Carville in more than just a passing manner. In order to build an article at Wikipedia (especially a biography of a living person, which are subject to extra scrutiny), we must rely on reliable sources that are independent of the subject in order to verify the facts in the article. A neutral, encyclopedic biography should not be based on what a person says, but on what others have said about him, in reliable published sources. I have just noticed an eventual notice of removal of the wikipedia article of Miss Chalek after some changes have been made few days after the article was posted I have also read your comment according to which Chalek has supposedly "managed somehow to get her name mentioned in the Wikipedia article about Fashion design" Do you really think a millionaire individual with certainly a hectically insane schedule has time to waste worrying about her name being mentioned in a fashion design article? would you? I don't think so Last but not least, I have removed what I think has provoked the notice of removal as I have the firm conviction that lady deserves to be on wikipedia based on her notability in France, Dubai and US. Finally I strongly believe you shouldn't be making unfounded accusations towards a meritorious lady who has been giving back so much to the community. FYI she has been rewarded by the mayor of Dushanbe for her charitable work and donations she has made in favor of the poor over the past 2 years! Not everything is advertised through the media.Without people like her, many of my people wouldn't be alive.

I didn't mean to imply that she was responsible for the use of her name in the Wikipedia article, just that the name was mentioned. But once so mentioned, that mention spread across the internet in dozens of sites that have copied the Wikipedia article, mostly verbatim. What you have removed from the article were actually legitimate entries in her infobox about the nature and location of her business. There was no need to remove that information, but its presence or absence does not change my assessment that there is insufficient evidence that Ms Chalek has been the subject of significant coverage in independent sources sufficient to build a verifiable biography. I admire your own good opinion about Ms Chalek, and I'm sure her charitable work is admirable, but that's not the criterion for inclusion at Wikipedia. These are, and I don't think she meets them. First of all sorry for the long wait replying to your msg.I must admit the nomination for deletion of the article I wrote and which took me 2 hours to put together saddened me. Although I disagree with your comments, I have taken good notes of them. Deleting the article, Myriam Chalek,will be a mistake and unjustified as she has created an innovative concept for fashion designers to have the opportunity to create their line without having to be inconvenienced by the legal, administrative and logistic aspects of starting a fashion business.She literally has brought a new perspective to the industry and has allowed thousand of designers to start their own business through her company. During the economical crisis, the strong campaign she conducted through seminars all over the states has encouraged entrepreneurship and many angel investors have joined her to promote the 'One Stop Shop' Also, she is exponentially involved in charity work in the most secluded area of the world and has been the first one to organize a prom party in France!!! This has made history: before her, no high school students had a prom party. It might seem surreal but true. Thanks to her altruism and generosity, this year again and many others to come, high school students from all over France will have the joy to celebrate their graduation at a prom party, a tradition introduced to France through Myriam Chalek

However as I mentioned I took good notes of your comments and I have sent an email to Creative Business House to try to obtain Myriam Chalek direct email to attempt to obtain additional information. I doubt I can chat with her directly but since I wrote the article on her I hope she gives me some of her time unless she feels indignant by the comments doubting her notability .I think you were a little tough and undiplomatic stating that Chalek has managed to get her name in some wikipedia article. I mean i dont think someone with that caliber cares about having one sentence with their name in it. I have also noticed that someone added a reference and has added the info box which looks good but has some mistake as it mentioned that Chalek has a Phd when i know from an insider that she has a Master in international business law.

You have written enough. But in the wrong venue. The article has been nominated, and that process will proceed until it ends. If you want to influence that process, you must make your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Myriam Chalek. Nothing you say here will be seen by the administrator who evaluates the discussion and makes the final decision regarding deletion. When you do make your comments at that venue, please keep in mind that your long laundry list of Chalek's accomplishments will mean nothing if they can't be backed up by reliable sources. She may well have created an innovative new business model for fashion entrepreneurship, but we'll need to see that assessment in an independent source (a fashion magazine would be a good choice). The sources listed simply do not add up to significant coverage of Ms Chalek, whether or not the sources are blogs, local events announcements, or pieces published in Le Parisien (or at least on their website). Many of the cited sources talk about Chalek's charity (Donnon leur une chance), but not of Chalek herself. My comment about "a laundry list" referred to your list of Chalek's accomplishments, which may well be impressive, but again, if not noted in any reliable source, are meaningless. And I will tell you again: no comment you make here will affect the outcome of this process one iota. The article has been nominated for deletion, and it will remain so nominated until the discussion has completed. The administrator who reviews the case will not see your comments here. General thanks and a question[edit]

WikiDan61, I'd like to thank you for being a model of an effective Wikipedia editor. I'm an educator who has on a few occasions assigned students to spend half of the semester researching, documenting, and then writing Wikipedia pages on relatively obscure but notable science fiction authors and books, and they tend not to take Wikipedia seriously at first even when I warn them that it is a rigorous ongoing peer review comprising millions of pages and many thousands of invested users. Generally this ends when they're edited or reverted for the first time, often by you. When that happens, they realize they must take the community seriously, and also have a strong reason to ask me for writing and editing advice. From my perspective, this is a good situation: students learn to respect the process, develop research and writing skills, and eventually produce decent material, and some stay on in the community afterward. I'm curious about your perspective; I imagine that you continually encounter Wikipedia newbies making poorly-thought-out changes, some of whom rapidly learn while others presumably do not. I'm not entirely sure what your question is, but I think it has to do with my thoughts on new editors and the common mistakes they make. Most of the new editors whose initial efforts I have reverted have come to Wikipedia for the wrong reason: to push some agenda or promote something. For the rest, I find that the mistakes arise from not familiarizing themselves with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines regarding proper tone, content and sourcing. New users, once they have edited an article and declared themselves as "active editors" are generally welcomed with the standard Wikipedia welcome message, that includes links to articles on how to get started at Wikipedia. Too many new editors ignore this welcome, and plunge in headlong leading to mistakes.
I will admit that I have been accused of being to BITEy to new users, and I have taken that advice to heart, trying to recognize earnest efforts at improvement and help those efforts. I may mistake earnest efforts for insincere or outright vandalistic efforts, and if I have done that to any of your students, I apologize. Oh, no, I hope I didn't give the wrong impression--I'm very appreciative, and I think my students end up appreciative too. I actually found that, at least with my students, while they initially tend to get angry on being edited, it takes very little time (a class period or two of discussion and reflection) for them to turn around. Being edited gives them a real understanding that, contrary to what they may have heard in high school, the Wikipedia community/process has high standards they need to meet. A couple of years ago, one of my students (who had at first angrily ranted something like "Who is WikiDan61 to revert my changes?" before reflecting on it) mailed me at 4 am, extremely excited, to let me know that you'd given him positive feedback on a much-improved version of a page he was working on. I think that can mean a lot--knowing that they're being read by critical but ultimately friendly readers, that they can actually assemble useful knowledge that a wider audience will appreciate. But I was curious about the other side of the equation--how do you feel about new editors jumping in boldly and making rookie mistakes as part of the process of learning the community? As you have pointed out: being bold is one of the hallmarks of Wikipedia. Mistakes get made, and generally, they get repaired rather quickly. It is part of the process of learning to work on this project. As long as the editors who come along to make the corrections can give some friendly guidance (either in the form of edit summaries as they are undoing the mistake, or as a message specifically addressed to the errant editor), the community grows by extending knowledge from experience user to novices. Now, if the novice users continue to make novice mistakes, showing no signs of learning from the corrections (as I have seen happen), this can become problematic. I'll swoop in and comment, that I also think WikiDan does a bang-up job.  :-)   Jmdeane1, your concept of using wikipedia as a semester-long teaching tool seems quite appropriate to me, thanks for improving wikipedia with your group. As you may know, there are other teachers that have ideas which are not so good. There was one professor in Toronto, if memory serves, who once a sememster in "pop-quiz style" would ask their students (in a 1000-person intro-to-psychology class) to each make a handful of edits, that very same night as homework, and report back the results the next day in class, for a grade. There was no guidance given the students on what sort of edits were allowed, and many of them would thus put things like "hi" into the middle of a paragraph, or add their own names to List Of Queens Of England, or similar silly stuff like that. Participation was the only grade the professor gave; if you edited, you got an A+ ...even if your edits were garbage.
  This sort of treat-wikipedia-as-a-psychology-lab-experiment type of stuff was not very well received, as you might imagine.  ;-)   By contrast, having students write up a wikiNotable topic over the course of a semester, simultaneously sharpening their writing skills, and improving wikipedia substantially, is a much-appreciated idea. Like wikiDan, I would be interested in hearing about the effort; did students like wikipedia? Did they find the tools/culture too harsh? What are the procedures that you follow, in terms of selecting topics, and giving initial guidance to the students, and so on?
  As for practical guidance, I would point out that there is a difference between the colloquial meaning of notable, such as artistically important, or interesting as a pop culture phenomenon, or similar, and the specific idea of wikiNotable that is required for articles here on wikipedia. (See WP:42 and note that sources specifically refers to WP:RS meaning newspaper coverage, teevee coverage, magazine coverage, academic journal articles, and similar professional sources.) So for instance, Don't Bite the Sun currently has about a dozen sources in the refs section, but almost none of them are wikiReliable Sources (papers/tv/mags/books/academia). Here are some sources I scrounged up for the book which satisfy WP:RS a bit more fully: a newspaper,[2] an online zine with a professional editorial department,[3] and a university library which notes a derivative work in other media that back-references Tanith Lee's book,[4] plus maybe this interview.[5] Those are pretty good refs, but notice how they all just briefly mention Bite The Sun, which is called WP:NOTEWORTHY and belongs in wikipedia usually, but is not in-depth enough to achieve WP:N. By contrast, here is a good long book-review,[6] but the downside is that the review is at the website of Tor Books aka Macmillian, and might therefore not count as independent (depends on if the author-of-the-review has a financial interest). So where are the book reviews from 1976? Well, offline, unfortunately. Your students might be able to track such things down, or might not. But this is related to my question about choice-of-article-topic. The best way to keep the students happy, is to pick topics that have enough WP:RS material for them to write the wikipedia article *from* those sources. Make sense? Hope this helps.
  p.s. I'll mention in passing that we have WP:AFC and also WP:GoCE, if you want to give the students some assignments in proofreading/cleanup, plenty of the existing wikipedia articles and drafts need that sort of help. Hello WikiDan, you marked this for deletion back on the 4th, when it was called Hometaurus, but it has re-appeared. Some WP:GOOG suggests that the site is not mentioned in RS. There are three refs in the article, two WP:ABOUTSELF and one from CBS News Online, but the company-slash-product is not mentioned by CBS, the piece is just a general real-estate-markup-update sort of thing. Can something be double-speedied? p.s. Note that Carriearcher is in the list of editors, she is a beginner whom I believe is trying to learn the wikiGnoming-trade from WP:GoCE, and may not have any interest in the topic otherwise. However, rather than wiping the page, the place for a deletion-discussion is here: WP:Articles_for_deletion/Myriam_Chalek, and unless more sources are found, I expect the article will be deleted.
