Thank you for the messages. I don't know if you are an admin or not but yes, there is an edit war going on with the Phillipe Cunningham page that doesn't need to be. This page was 95% in its original form for YEARS then about a week ago Phillipe Cunningham went on Twitter and asked his supporters to engage in a campaign to scrub his resume. The link for that is here. https://twitter.com/CunninghamMPLS/status/1494825591710916613 . Shortly after, this person mplspolitico COMPLETELY rewrote the wiki page on Cunningham. This person is either Phillipe Cunningham himself or his husband based on the things said. I went back and merged the two hoping it would resolve the issue and once again, mplspolitico took out 95% of what was originally posted. This chain of events is CLEARLY a campaign to make Cunningham look good as he is a politician. I hope the admins fix this as soon as possible. Changes on my company page[edit]

I've done changes on my employer page Linkurious since the information on it was outdated and inaccurate and enriched the page with additional information on the company description and history. I've tried to stick to useful and valid information and to avoid any promotional wording. I would truly appreciate if you could allow me to update that page and let me know which information you deemed promotional.

@Sylvainlinkurious: Your second effort is a far cry better than your first. I would caution against using Linkurious' own website or press releases as sources for this article because, as primary sources, their neutrality must be questioned. Reporting in independent press or journals is preferable. Also, since you work for Linkurious, you must disclose your conflict of interest, especially if you are being paid to edit the page as part of your job there. Thank you very much for the clarification @WikiDan61: It makes total sense, I'm sorry for the mistakes, I'm new to Wikipedia community and this was my first edit. I've tried to be as neutral and informative as possible on the second effort. Understood for the links, I'm just limited by the fact the company doesn't do much press relation, therefore limited number of articles in independant press or journal. What you need to do, since you have demonstrated a conflict of interest regarding this subject, is comment at Talk:Ogwu James Onoja and list the changes you would like to see. In making any such requests, you should be prepared to show proof, in the form of reliable sources, indicating that the information you would like to see added is verifiably correct, or that the information you would like to see removed is verifiably incorrect. Guild of Copy Editors April 2022 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the April newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2021.

Election results: Jonesey95 retired as lead coordinator. Reidgreg was approved to fill this role after an 18-month absence from the coordinator team, and Baffle gab1978 was chosen as an assistant coordinator following a one-year break. Dhtwiki, Miniapolis and Tenryuu continued on as long-standing assistant coordinators.

January Drive: Of the 22 editors who signed up, 16 editors claimed 146 copy edits including 45 requests. (details)

February Blitz: This one-week effort focused on requests and a theme of Africa and African diaspora history. Of the 12 editors who signed up, 6 editors recorded 21 copy edits, including 4 requests. (details)

March Drive: Of the 28 editors who signed up, 18 claimed 116 copy edits including 25 requests. (details)

April Blitz: This one-week copy editing event has been scheduled for 17–23 April, sign up now!

Progress report: As of 11 April, copy editors have removed approximately 500 articles from the backlog and completed 127 copy-editing requests during 2022. The backlog has been hovering at about 1,100 tagged articles for the past six months.

Thanks for monitoring and contributing to the Bob Tricker page. I am just looking to update the page as to reflect the best source of truth, as this is what would be of interest to the Wiki reader? I believe Tricker's own biography to be this. If I was to rewrite my words, would this be sufficient? Any advise as to how to remedy the flagged concerns with this page appreciated.

@Hinton.LK: The "best source of truth" is a tricky subject, but generally, what a person writes about themself is not the best source of truth. People have trouble writing about themselves with the neutrality that Wikipedia requires. Generally, Wikipedia prefers to report what other reliable sources have said about the subject rather than what the subject has said about themself. Rewriting Tricker's autobiography in your own words would not help, as you would still be relying on his own self-reporting as your source. WikiDan61^ChatMe!_ReadMe!! 15:25, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022[edit]

Hello WikiDan61,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 817 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 859 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

Proposed deletion of Centre for New Development Thinking[edit]

The article Centre for New Development Thinking has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

An article on a thinktank. Notability has been queried since inception of the article, whose references are from associated institutions and individuals. The site links are no longer operative and the best that can be found is passing mentions, which are insufficient to demonstrate that notability was attained. (An WP:ATD redirect to University of Chile would be too remote.)

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

@Nsands901: Nicole, because you are on the PR team at Ember, you have a conflict of interest and should not be editing the article. Your content was reverted because it lacked any reliable sources and seemed entirely promotional. (Being on the PR team, I suspect that was your intent, but it is not not Wikipedia's. The article has been nominated for deletion (by me) since I could not find evidence that Alexander meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, nor that his company, Ember Technologies does either. I'm a historian who specializes in Sidonius Apollinaris, and if people are interested in Abraham, they'll be interested in Sidonius's (not Apollinaris Sedonis, as the wikipedia page currently states and that I tried to correct) epitaph. Furthermore, can you explain why citing a translation constitutes a copyright violation? Other Latin poetry pages have translations that have been made after 1930 that are cited, as I cited Anderson's Loeb translation. @Entropyyy: @67.174.176.184: While the ancient Latin text is clearly free of any copyright encumbrances, the modern translation is still a copyrighted work. The author (WB Anderson in this case) created new intellectual property with his own translation of the original Latin, and that IP must be respected. A brief excerpt may be used under fair use rules, but not the entire translation. If there are other pages on Wikipedia where entire Latin poems are presented with modern copyrighted translations, please point them out to me as they may need to be edited to address the situation. I don't believe Allan Kornblum (publisher) was only noted for founding Coffee House Press, that's why I think a separate page for him is warranted. I will work on the biography and add material related to his work as a poet, as a fine printer, and as a historian/commentator on typography. hello WikiDan61, thanks for your response. I understand the concern, and I have modified the draft to focus on Kornblum's activities as a poet, and as a letterpress printer, and I will submit it shortly.

Reviewing existing Wikipedia pages for poet-publishers, Kornblum's contemporaries, has helped me focus my thoughts. In the case of Haki R. Madhubuti, Wikipedia has both a page on him, and a page on his press Third World Press, and the same is the case for Jonathan Williams (poet) and his press Jargon Society. The case of Williams is perhaps more relevant since both Kornblum and Williams are deceased and the presses continue on, directed by other people. I also looked at the page for Donald Allen. He was primarily an editor, and there is no separate page for his press Grey Fox Press, which seems right to me. My argument here is that Kornblum is more like Madhubuti and Williams than he is like Allen, since he had a significant career as a poet (and also as a letterpress printer while he ran the Toothpaste Press). New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022[edit]

Hello WikiDan61,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000^[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.^[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). None of these links are sufficient to support the amount of unsourced material you have added to the page. Update on Joe R. Pool[edit]

Yes I am a granddaughter of Joe R. Pool and we do have all of his archives and we would like to share his story however, it seems since I am related and there is no other way to get this information out there Joe R. Pool's wikipedia page will never contain the necessary information needed to truly tell his story. Therefore, defeating the purpose wikipedia's mission. How else do you get a deceased persons history if the family isn't allowed to contribute?

@Eclary444: Lately, the problem is your addition of many photocopied newspaper articles, that are a copyright violation. You may cite these articles without uploading them; you need only provide enough information (newspaper, date, article title, preferably author and page number) so that an intrepid researcher could find the article in the newspaper's archives (either online at the newspaper's website or through microfilm/microfiche archives available at larger libraries). Personal letter written to or by Joe Pool that have been scanned and uploaded are problematic for other reasons: although they are not a copyright violation, they are also not a reliable source since there is no way to authenticate them. Overall, though, I would say that your writing suffers from the same problem we see in many family biographies: the desire to document every minute detail of the subject's life, no matter how trivial, because it seems so important to you. This is why Wikipedians are discouraged from writing about their own family members. Joe Pool clearly accomplished some things in his career -- enough to have a lake named after him in recognition. I would recommend that you limit your editing at this article to making suggestions at the article's talk page. Or, yes, you could create your own website to memorialize your grandfather. Notability[edit]

The Wikipedia requirements for notability require verifiable and properly referenced information. Multiple music curation and information sites list information on it, such as Whosampled and Genius, which go beyond self-publishing as they are verified before going public. It was also covered in Vice's "A Year Of Lil Wayne" series. There are dozens of review sites featuring it as well. I feel given that it's been downloaded well over 100,000 times on DatPiff alone, is referenced on these sites, and has verifiable information, it counts as notable. New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022[edit]

Hello WikiDan61,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination: MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.

Open letter to the WMF: The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.

TIP - Reviewing by subject: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.

New reviewers: The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

If you don't agree with this guideline, you are free to discuss it at Wikipedia talk:Categorization, but while the guideline exists, it should be followed. Google Algorithm work and operate following categories, by taking off the category 1860 Ottoman Syria you hide what happened in mount of Lebanon as genocide and bury it under a category 1860 ottoman empire.

Lets start with the basics, shall we?

Definition of a genocide? the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group "a campaign of genocide". In 1860 there was no reliable sources, as winners write the history. Yet from the demographic change which happened to the region, you can conclude that a genocide did happen to a group of people in this region.

After 1900s Ottoman empire genocide were better documented and also we have a page for these horrible events on wikipedia, Late Ottoman genocides, where in reality these genocides started in 1860 in mount of Lebanon... For example the great famine of mount if Lebanon which was also a Genocide, Great Famine of Mount Lebanon, yet according to you we can't label it as a genocide.

Now if take time to dive in the history of the region, you will find that's its justified to label the events of 1860 as Genocide Genocide of Christians by the Islamic State, as its a cycle which still happening till our time.

If you do not like the sources created by the Soviet Union, you are obliged to produce better sources. But you don't get to claim "Soviet sources are all biased and not to be believed." That violates neutrality. You actually have to provide contradicting sources. As it stands, since there is not consensus regarding Kulik's ethnicity, I have taken out any mention of it, leaving the sentence as Kulik was born into a peasant family near Poltava. Hi. First of all thanks, I suppose, for "defending" my sources, so to speak. However, I'm afraid I have to insist on going back to my version. Not because it's mine, mind you, but because that's what the sources say. I had given another user the benefit of the doubt because I thought he was acting in good faith when stating he was "of uncertain origin", but he's presently banned, and a quick look at his edits shows that he was not acting in good faith at any point during his brief editing career. The user who straight up posted that Kulik was Russian posted a "source" that made no mention at all of that fact, shielding himself in the fact that most people do not check sources and trust the editor, and those who do check by and large do not read Russian. I trusted the editor and was wrong in doing so. When the present edit warrior popped up and reverted me for using a Russian Ministry of Defence website (which should be reliable enough to check basic facts, btw), I provided other sources in Russian because I assumed he was familiar with that language, but there are plenty of reputable sources in other languages who will corroborate the fact of Kulik's Ukrainian ethnicity, for instance, this academic article by a Ukrainian, in Ukrainian: [2] You need not read the actual article (on Ukrainians in the Finnish-Soviet war) if you can't access it, because you can find the information in the abstract, where it says "Маршал і Герой Радянського Союзу, українець Кулик Григорій Іванович, як заступник наркома оборони СРСР, брав участь у підготовці армійських і артилерійських частин до радянсько-фінської війни". If my Ukrainian doesn't fail me (I have decent command of Russian, but Ukrainian I can only understand insofar as there's a degree of mutual intelligibility!), this translates as "Marshal and Hero of the Soviet Union, the Ukrainian Grigory Ivanovich Kulik [note - Ukrainians put surnames first, I've altered the order], who was vicecommisar? of defence of the USSR, took part in the preparation of the army and artillery parts for the Soviet-Finnish war."

Most importantly however, since this is the English wiki and most people can't read any Russian or Ukrainian, David Marples (professor at the University of Alberta) and Alla Hurska (Ukrainian researcher for think tanks in the US and Ukraine) have very recently (it came out in August of this year!) published a book that includes individual entries on a lot of figures that were related somehow to Stalin, which includes Kulik. On page 122, on the entry for Kulik, you can read "Grigory Kulik was born in the village of Dudnikovo (now in the Poltava region of Ukraine) into a poor Ukrainian peasant family." I've looked it up on google books and I hope this link works: [3]

We're unlikely to get an individual biography of Kulik, so I think Marples' and Hurska's book is as definitive as it will get. I do not believe we should remove factual, verifiable information just because a user whose very name suggests he's WP:NOTHERE says "WP:IDONTLIKEIT". Given that I already got a block for edit warring with an ideological crusader, and that you took the decision to remove the ethnicity bit, could I kindly ask you to self-revert to my previous version (and add these sources, if you deem it necessary)? You can add that you're self-reverting at my request in the edit summary, if you're worried about getting flak for edit warring. I do not mind assuming responsibility, but I would prefer not to give an admin the impression that I'm involved in an edit war.

The image has been published on a website (Coverslfly) that is claiming copyright. I'm not fully familiar with Wikimedia Commons' practices in cases like this, but I'd recommend you follow the directions in the deletion template: remove the speedy deletion template and open a deletion discussion instead, where you may make your case for owning the copyright to this image. What source I used was a federal census record. The information on the brother came from a newspaper article of the time. I guess I am confused. Users may not have reliable information that the records they have found are truly their own ancestors' records, or that the records are reliable. The newspaper article you cited stated only that a person named James Rollins died in a hospital; it did not identify this person as Jack Rollins' brother. We always need more active, skilled copyeditors – particularly for requests – so please get involved if you can.

Election news: In our mid-year election, serving coordinators Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis, Reidgreg and Tenryuu were returned for another term, and were joined by new coordinator Zippybonzo. No lead coordinator was elected for this half-year. Jonesey95, a long-serving coordinator and lead, was elected as coordinator emeritus; we thank them for their service. New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022[edit]

Hello WikiDan61,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

Suggestions:

There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

@Ajmisura: There is a process for donating copyrighted material, but in the case of this edit to Joseph E. Nyre, it wouldn't be worth the effort. Not only is the material a copyright violation of Seton Hall University's website, but it is also blatantly promotional and inappropriate for Wikipedia content. I'd say that you could try to rewrite the content in your own words, with a less promotional tone, using the SHU page as a reference, but there was no actual meaningful content in the material you copied; it was all just empty marketing-speak. Blitz: Our October Copy Editing Blitz focused on July and August 2022 request months; and articles tagged for c/e in December 2021 and January 2022. Seventeen of those who signed up claimed at least one copy-edit, and between them copy-edited forty-six articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

Drive: In the November Backlog Elimination Drive, thirty editors signed up, twenty-two of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. 2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Amhara genocide article[edit]

You recently added a tag in the middle of discussion, and while specifically asking you to wait my on-going edit, and until i finish adding sources. I have a problem with your timing and the destructive nature of your edits specifically on non-Tigray (articles on the opposing side in the conflict). This is why I am doubting your neutrality as an editor. As for AAA, it is used as a key source for international publishers including the U.S. Government. And while the Amhara Association of America may or may not be used as a "key source for international publishers" is up for debate (yes, the AAA is quoted as a source in some articles about the area), that doesn't change the fact that they have a distinct, non-neutral agenda that makes them an inappropriate source for Wikipedia, in my opinion.
