Denial

I am in no way questioning the authentecity of that explanation; being Jewish, the grandson of a WWII soldier, and the relative of those who lost their lives in the Holocaust I am all to aware that most "questions" of Holocaust denial have such simple explanations, but that section didn't have a source that anybody had even questioned the amont of rubble. With Wikipedia, the issue is verifiability, not truth. Even if people have raised the issue, without a source we can't include it (With or with an explanations). Hi, the anon IP you are arguing with on the Belzec talk page is a long-standing crackpot. There isn't much point engaging with him, as he rarely or never edits articles, and only seeks to cast doubt on the Holocaust and waste other people's time. Other areas where you can help
  • Assessment requests: Some open Requests for assessment need to be answered. To see new assessment requests as they come in, you can watchlist the assessment page.
  • More task forces and subprojects: As this WikiProject covers a very large topic area, it is helpful to add more task forces that focus on specific aspects of Germany. Currently, we have a Mainz task force, a Munich subproject and some joint task forces with other WikiProjects. Any project member is invited to start a new task force. Suggestions for possible topics:
    • Transportation in Germany
    • German politics (the political system of Germany and the biographies of its politicians)
    • German Democratic Republic

Be creative! If you have an idea, just suggest it on the project talk page (don't forget to watchlist it).

  • Categorization: Uncategorized Germany stubs need to be categorized

  • Cities and municipalities task force

The task force dedicated to creating and improving articles on all German cities and municipalities is happy to announce that there are now (at least) stub articles for all municipalities of Germany. Now the task force is looking for help in fleshing these out a little bit. The current phase of activity for the task force is to copy in infoboxes from the articles in German Wikipedia. If you want to help, even just for a few articles, look at the instructions and links here

  • Article Assessment:

There are now way over 26.000 articles tagged as part of our Wikiproject and many still need either an importance or a quality assessment. Also there are many more out there that do need to be tagged like approx 8000 municipalities. If you would like to help take a browse through Articles needing Importance assessment or Articles needing a basic quality assessment.

Volcanix92 usertalk

Hi William,

I noticed you wrote on the Volcanix92 usertalk a few times, asking us to stop using it as a means of communications. I would like you to know that Jeremy and I are using Wikipedia usertalk because it is our only means of free communication. Jeremy has been away at sea for the past 3 months, on a ship, and wikipedia is one of the only 'free sites' he has access to. Internet on the ship is extremely slow and runs over $.50 per minute. This is not social networking, as you imply, but two people trying to maintain communication thousands of miles apart. Additionally, I would appreciate you not reading our posts. Thanks.

Hi WilliamH,

I've gone ahead and reverted your non-admin close of the AfD above based on the fact that it has a couple of fairly well-reasoned delete comments and thus is not eligible for non-admin closure. Obviously I hope it gets kept and, given the expansion of the article, I think it will most likely be kept, but cases like this are best closed by an uninvolved admin.

I also looked through a couple of your recent closes and noticed a couple borderline cases at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Indradyumna Swami (2nd nomination) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Andrew Jess Dannenberg. I don't disagree with your call on either (rather, I'm going to endorse both of them), but in the future it might be best to stick to unanimous or near-unanimous keeps when doing non-admin closes just to avoid unnecessary muss and fuss. It also wouldn't hurt if you expand on your reasons for closing AfDs as keep--you clearly have a good eye for consensus, but forcing yourself to explain what specific points the commentors are in consensus on is excellent practice and will demonstrate a knowledge of policy and its application at your inevitable RfA.

Hi jonny-mt. I did speculate such an outcome after having closed it, I just tried to take the initiative. I'm sure you realise that me not being as articulate as I should have been (and intend to be from now on) does not equate to lacking policy/consensus knowledge, so in future I shall outline my reasoning based on the consensus I construe more clearly, and stick to more clear-cut cases. easyJet Incident

Hi there Will. Just to let you know I reverted your edits to EasyJet regarding the reported incident. WP:AIRLINE guidelines state the basic criteria for including an incident or accident on an airline page and states that:

  • Accidents or incidents should only be included if:
    • The event was fatal to either aircraft occupants or persons on the ground;
    • The event involved hull loss or serious damage to the aircraft or airport;
    • The event resulted in changes to procedures, regulations or processes affecting airports, airlines or the aircraft industry.

We developed this guideline to avoid minor and non-notable incidents or those of little encyclopedic value clogging up airline and airport pages alike. Spam

Could anyone explain to me why the following URLs: www.holocaustresearchproject.org and www.deathcamps.org are spam blacklisted? Both contain reams of information and I cannot help but feel this is chucking the baby out with the bath water. WilliamH (talk) 22:38, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

I recall the latter being blacklisted due to a conflict between that site and a site with a similar name having an edit war with each other both claiming their site was the correct one, and the net result was that both links ended up getting blacklisted. I can't find the conflict but Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam/LinkReports/deathcamps.org might give you an idea on the spamming level of one site but not the conflict. I think if you specify exact links to pages, you can get them whitelisted for the former; go to MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist which details the process (the links are blacklisted at m:Spam blacklist, so local whitelisting is the only option). Try to tone down the WP:UAA reports. Violations you report there need to be really severe and need immediate blocking. Specifically, if a username is strange or confusing, it doesn't need an immediate block -- you should instead start a discussion with the user, perhaps using {{uw-username}} as a jumping-off point. I agree with Equa, please refrain from non-admin closures unless 5 days have elapsed, and the vote is unanimous. Nothing against your judgement, which I am sure is sound, but early non-admin closures - whether or not invoking WP:SNOW - after less 5 than days, especially with several delete votes (I'm aware the article was expanded after the delete votes on Malin to Mizen were cast, but still) are not worth the hassle... need to replace an article

Dear WilliamH,

I would like to rewrite an article on the Russian modernist writer and artist Alexei Remizov. I did my PhD on him at Brown University, and have recently finished a book on his graphic art (it is now under review with Northwestern UP). The article presently posted has numerous minor mistakes that would be easy to edit out, but my main concern is that it has very little information about the subject’s life and work and in what it offers it is very lump-sided. For some reason, it focuses on a very minor area of Remizov’s work, presenting him as a writer of Gothic horror stories. The article neglects to list the only English-language monograph on the writer (by Greta Slobin), and has next to noting for Remizov’s works in the bibliography section. A less important, but very irritating, inclusion is the article’s mention of an unfavorable comment regarding Remizov’s writing by Vladimir Nabokov. This comment should not be included in a general article without any proper context or commentary.

Having removed the proposed deletion template, the editor who contributed the prose was not impressed that I prodded it. Similarly, I think he would object to reinstating the redirect. It would be a bit bitey to take this to an AfD, but the subject really does not seem notable and Wikipedia is certainly not a course guide of what the assosciated college offers in its drama faculty. Hi! I noticed you have been helping out at ACC. Just a quick note, if you can't create an account, because it is too similar to another account, but that other account has few or no edits, and none recently (last edit was 6 months to a year ago), then you can click the "Defer to admins" button. The similar button is only when the requested account could be confused with another account in existance, which is already active. I just looked at this request [2] and noticed this - I thought I'd bring it to your attention.

Dresden

Hello, sorry for late reply. You wrote earlier on about the photo of the Coventry Cathedral in the Dresden article,

"it is worthy of inclusion because it has interesting historical value in the context of highly notable WW2 bombing campaigns".

I think this photograph is in an inappropriate place, because it tries to suggest the bombing of civilians was justified. You certainy know that it is not. Coventry and Dresden were at the time completely different as for:

circumstances (defended city/undefended city), urban structure resp. signifance (centre of ammunition industry/art and opera city), people in the city (coventry: population/dresden: population plus 500 000 refugees) let alone their dimensions (Coventry around 1000 dead/ Dresden an unknown number of 35 000 - 135 000 dead). In Dresden bodies were found until the 1970ies, to give you a notion about the extent of destruction. I don't know any other city in Europe were bodies were still found in cellars, over a quarter of a century after the attack.

I agree with you that this picture has "historical value" indeed. Only i do think it is in the wrong place to show its value. This intentionally wrong place makes your photograph in the Dresden article highly inappropriate and it is more than obvious that it tries to belittle Allied atrocities. Germans are not trying to belittle the atrocities happened in the name of their country, so it would be very nice if you English/American or whoever users would not do so, either. We can only deal with history on grounds of truth and facts, not with trying to play down inconvenient issues.

I ask you again to exchange this photograph to one that corresponds with the issue. Dresden and Coventry do have something in common, yet they are very different issues as i have pointed out.

Without necessarily agreeing with everything Peter said, I agree that it's quite obvious that placing a photo of bombed Coventry on a page about the bombing of Dresden is intended to press the POV that the people of Dresden got what they deserved as payback for Coventry. Do you think it would be appropriate to have a photo of an atrocity committed against Germans on the Holocaust page, saying it's "highly notable in the context of WWII atrocities"? Removing such a photo from the Holocaust page would not imply that no atrocities were committed against Germans or that such atrocities should be minimized. It would rather be to suggest that neither atrocity should be minimized and crimes against Germans do not justify crimes against Jews and vice versa. The Holocaust article isn't about wartime atrocities, it's about atrocities against the Jews. Likewise, photos of Dresden do not belong in articles about Coventry and vice versa. Find a photo of Bomber Harris if you want to put a photo up that connects something British to the Dresden bombings. I suggest you start a new section on the Talk page titled "photo of bombed Coventry" and ask what people think of its inclusion if you think the opinions of Peter and I are not reflective of the consensus.Bdell555 (talk) 23:53, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Any such belief that I endeavour to push an agenda on this article is clearly misplaced, and the idea that Dresden can be 'played off' against Coventry here is extraneous to me, given that I have no interest in such games of moral relativism. It doesn't take much virtue of the mind to see that Peter's train of thought on this topic is not the same as mine. Video game

Um, I read your fair use rationale and there is no critical commentary for that image. We do not need an image of the game cover to illustrate the fact that there is a game based on the films. None of the commentary about the game talk about the game cover. I know, I replaced the orphan tag on it. It isn't the first time. When all of the games were first merged into the franchise article (because they were once on a general "Friday the 13th (video games)" page), there was a small group (namely 1 editor) that wanted to bring that image over to the article. And now he's adding more redundant material to the Neo-Nazi sub-section. His whole aim seems to discredit by association with the Nazis (including me - whom he has compared to the neo-Nazi Irving) all those who think that Dresden was a war crime. You personally attack me and say I shouldn't be allowed to edit the article but blithly accept his POV rhetoric of 'guilt by association'. Can't you see what he is doing to the article? The Neo-Nazi sub-section forms about 80% of the section about Dresden being a war crime as though to suggest that opposition to the bombings is mostly a Nazi thing - this is POV and you reproach me for stating the obvious and stand by and do nothing when he compares me to a Neo-Nazi. I have no idea how to do diffs and don't approve of such wikilawyering anyway. Maybe we can use common sense for the first time on the wikipedia. Just look at the article and notice how many times the rhetorical device of guilt by association with Nazis is used. And all the quotes seem to have been deliberately cherry picked with the aim of putting the worst possible construction on the motives of those who think that Dresden was a war-crime: they are either Neo-Nazis or Nazi dupes or Germans who should shut up because they because of some assumed inherited guilt over the Holocaust. It is not wikilawyering, it is plain common sense - how am I supposed to know what you mean if you don't bring forward diffs or at least quote what you are referring to? If you'd like to balance out the very notable commentary of the representations of Dresden as a war crime by not-so-benign people with commentary from those who aren't Nazis but nonetheless hold it as war crime....why not simply find and include such verifiable, reliable commentary? Oliver Keyes (Ironholds) suggested that I contact you. He's been helping me with an entry on the company for which I work, MaxWell Biocorporation. I've been asked to post a Wikipedia entry on it, but the first time I tried it, it got deleted for lacking Neutral POV. Also, our president and founder is Dr. Ken Alibek, and his W. entry has seen some controversy and debate. He has his critics and detractors in the States, but that shouldn't affect the entry for the company, which is bigger than him and is doing good work overseas in the healthcare field.

Oliver informed me yesterday and this morning that he can't work on the article any more, and suggested that you may be available to help me with it. Here's his latest email:

"The problem is that however neutrally worded I make it, it still gives more “internet airplay” as it were to the company. “lots of other companies exist” is fine, I haven’t said that the article should not be created, just that it will not be created by me. It’s up at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ironholds/Sandbox ; i’m afraid it isn’t much since I was busy sorting out the text rather than directly working on the article, but you’re welcome to pass it on. May I recommend User:WilliamH? He’s a friend; we were discussing the article status yesterday and his opinion is that it is still valid, so you could try him."

Please let me know if you are willing to help. It would mean a lot to me to have my draft proofed and "wikified" by an W. editor. As I told Oliver, I am interested in doing more with Wikipedia than just work-related entries, so would like this to become a learning process.

Ironholds did indeed run this before me, but only in passing. Please note that as a common courtesy I avoid involving myself in what he does on the wiki, nonetheless he is always welcome to my editorial opinion.
Here are some things I'd suggest doing:
  • Since you have been asked by your employer to create the article, you are inherently in a conflict of interest. Please consider this page.
  • If you want to contribute across the Wiki, I'd suggest getting a different username. Yours currently implies that it is operated by a group or collective, and since it references the company in question and has been purporting material related to it, it really doesn't satisfy the username policy.
  • Create a sandbox in your userspace. This is simply a subpage in your userspace that you use for tests and experiments. A sandbox for you would be User:Maxwell2008/Sandbox, for instance. See Wikipedia:User page for more information on the User space.
  • It's a bad idea to put sensitive information on the Wiki - these are public pages. Users with Oversight permissions can expunge edits from article histories if needs be - see here to request that.
Since you're interested in being a contributor, it might be a useful exercise to ask you: how does Maxwell Biocorporation satisfy the inclusion criteria? WilliamH (talk) 20:35, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

I am trying to improve your article, it is misstated that the number used up until 1989 was 3 million dead at the Auschwitz, when in fact it was 4 million dead that was used until 1989. I think that is a very important fact that should be stated correctly in the article.--Rothschild&co (talk) 00:32, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Where exactly is it mistated? Note that Western historians did not use the plaque/4 million variant as their basis for enquiry. The only mention of the 3 million figure is Höß' testimony in the lead, and his recanation is mentioned later. WilliamH (talk) 12:56, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
