Life membership

You have written the honorary life membership has been awarded to only six people. I have come across administrators like M. Chinnaswamy and S. Sriraman who MCC apparently made members. What kind of membership was that ? Tintin Talk 19:39, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Hello - an empty talk page is usually a good sign - it means you haven't been doing many bad things (people on WP usually come to your talk page to complain ;)). Anyway, what I know of English cricket usually comes from websites such as Cricinfo, talking with people in the know (I'm a member of the forum on cricketweb.net, plus one very dog-eared copy of Wisden from 2004 (btw, does your username refer to how many Wisden's you've got? Impressive collection in that case ;)). I've only watched three matches of cricket in my life, so my knowledge on the technical side of the game is rather thin. Welcome to the project, anyway - can I just take this opportunity to link you to Wikipedia:Verifiability - it may seem like a terrible pain to verify knowledge that you know is true, but citing sources really helps our integrity, so your contributions would get a bit more credit. One question about Wiki: do people generally e-mail other people or just use their talk pages. I mean I generally prefer using e-mail, but I don't mind?

Talk pages generally - the "you have new messages" tends to reach out quicker. If there's something private, you can use email.

Oh thanks for the link to the verification site. I was doing some editing on the Umpires' Page and had to keep resisting the urge to just put Law references every 5 minutes, as I am not of the opinion thatthat is what that page needs.

I agree that the umpires page doesn't need Law references on every corner, but if you've used a website or a book, by all means list it - preferably at the bottom of the page in a section called references (the umpire page actually doesn't have any references, which is bad). Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Wisden17/Archive 1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. Redwolf24 runs the spam to keep members up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of KnowledgeOfSelf, JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections will be in February, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. That really was a good question for the cricket quiz, but I'm a big Monty Python Fan, so I'd have kicked myself if I hadn't got it. What I'm interested in, is that I see by your user page that you live in New York, is what exposure have you had to cricket. I mean I'm in the UK, and will be involved in the cricket season, which starts very soon: do you play at all in America, and what sort of TV coverage (if any) do you get? I should, all things being well, be a member of the MCC for the start of the 2007 season, so if you ever want to get the chance to watch a Test Match from the Lord's Pavillion give me a shout. Also interested to see your in maths. I'm currently in my last year of school in the UK, doing, amongst other things, Maths and Further Maths A-Levels (equivalent to APs, sort of). What field of maths are you in, and what exactly does someone who works 'in maths' do? (I want to go into law, so all my maths will probably be pretty worthless, can't really ever see myself needing to do calculus with complex numbers, or use De Moivre's Theory, or see whether I have a pair of isomorphic groups etc., but hey it's pretty interesting none the less). Now I've got to try and think up a good question for the cricket quiz, something not stats related, not quite sure what yet. But I'll think of something. --Wisden17 21:22, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for the long time for response, but I've finally gotten around to it.. :P Also, lot of questions, I'll come to them one at a time... There's so much to say I'll probably use an outline...

1. First, about cricket and the States. I do live in NYC, and I am an American. So your first question might be why I am interested in cricket at all, and what exposure I might have to it.
   1. First of all, cricket is sort of catching on in parts of this country, esp. NYC and other parts of the east coast. This is probably due to all of the immigrants from Commonwealth nations; as you can imagine, NYC has huge South Asian and West Indian communities, probably about half a million of each. So there is some TV coverage, although nothing like you'd get elsewhere.
   2. Second, my personal connection to it is twofold: first, as you can see from my talk page, I am a mathematician, and second, my wife is from the West Indies (Trinidad, in fact). I think the second point makes it more obvious, but in fact I was interested quite a bit in cricket even before I met my wife, because many of my colleagues (again, as you might imagine) are from South Asia. Actually, my last job was at a Technical Institute, and frankly, the Indian population there was so high in the faculty and grad students that one would hear Hindi in the halls as often as English, and Tamil or other Southern languages not that unfrequently. So one hears a lot of talk of cricket in that environment. Being as I am a huge baseball fan, and was a decent baseball player when younger, the transition to cricket came quite naturally.
   3. Thanks for the invitation as well! I don't know when I'll find myself in London next, though. I would like to see matches there. I've been at Tests, but only in the Caribbean. Although, I can say, I saw Brian Lara bat in Trinidad in the same series where he got that 400*. Unfortunately, the day I saw him bat, he was out after four balls, and you can guess his score.
2. The math: Yeah, I do math for a living, I think in England you'd call me a "maths prof". My main research is probably best described as something like "applied probability theory", lately I've been doing work on some biological applications; the university where I teach has a large group of really good scientists working on math problems coming from biology, so I talk to these guys and try to attack the problems from the more "mathy" side. It's a lot of fun, but you have to love math. I am sure if you go into law you'll make more money....;-)
3. The quiz: Yeah, I find it's way harder to come up with a good question than a good answer over there. I had a few good questions early on, but I think I've exhausted all my ideas. The actual problem there is that Cricinfo is too good. I have asked some questions which I didn't even know what the answer was, and of course 30 seconds later someone had found a Cricinfo page answering my question exaclty. So one has to generate really off the wall stuff to make it non-trivial. --Deville (Talk) 16:30, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience: "No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention." Stress Alerts The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them. Note from the editor Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!

The last AC meeting (full log) Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen. Signed... About Q157

I am not really sure about the answer to the question (regarding the number of runs.) YES, when a batsman, shoulders arms, he does not get any leg byes. But if the ball cannons off the pad onto his bat, it is still considered legitimate as far as I know! A batsman can be OUT caught if the ball cannons off his pads onto his glove/bat. And accordingly, a ball stays ALIVE (against being DEAD) whichever way it hits the bat/glove, hence the batsman would surely get how many ever runs scored (7, I think...) credited to his name! However, I was not convinced by what ALoan said about the ball becoming "dead" when no shot is offered and it hits the batsman's body. So I thought I must clarify it with the enlightened ones ;). Barnstar Brigade The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. ContiE has impersonated me on other wikis

Hi, I'm in a potentially awkward position with an Administrator. I have read the Wiki pages on dispute resolution but I'm still not sure how to proceed.

The Admin ContiE has a personal grudge against me for reasons I do not fully understand. He has been this way since I began frequenting wikipedia.

I have done work improving the furvert article. He has basically gone on a crusade against any edit I make. He controls every furry category article and several others ruthlessly. He is an iron fist and bans anyone he edit wars with. I had uploaded pictures and he deleted them with no talking. He seems to believe I am every person he has had an edit war against. He is always using personal attacks, calling me troll without reason. I uploaded them again and he voted them for deleted, but to his surprise the person who runs the images, thank you Nv8200p, found they were acceptable once I tagged them properly. Just recently he removed both the images without himself discussing it in the talk page (unless he was the same person who discussed only one) with the edit here [1] Then ContiE assumed bad faith, added his constant insult of troll in the talk page. It appears on a completed different wiki, a comedy one in all things, somebody else stole my username and I believe this was Conti himself and uploaded them. ContiE showed it as his reason. While vandalism like his, I would revert and mention it, he would ban me permanently if I undid his edit. That is why I am asking admins for help. He holds a couple of accounts on wikipedia and I think they are administrators so I have to be careful who I tell about this. Arights 07:27, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Lord Chancellors

Official usage is not consistent: see, for instance, the "List of Lord Chancellors" provided by Parliament. I do not believe that Hansard always uses the plural "Lords Chancellor" ([2] [3] etc.) "Lord Chancellors" seems to make more sense, as Chancellor is the noun, and Lord the adjective. If you would like to experiment with it, though, I'd be more than happy to use my many sockpuppets to create some "vandalism" for you to revert. VandalProof page blanking

Yes, I'd like to know as well. Are you using v1.1? If not, please upgrade as the old version has some fairly critical bugs with the mod tools. I'm going to temporarily remove you from the mods list until we can get this resolved. Oh, and Stollery, the reason your rollback of the Welcome page didn't work is because of the security measures I put in place to prevent vandalism etc. (Rather ironic, isn't it?) Okay, I was able to isolate the cause. If you click update list before the list has been populated, it blanks it. The button shouldn't be enabled before the list loads, but somehow I misplaced the re-enable routine. Problems with monobook.js

Hi User:Wisden17, I noticed that you had some problems with your monobook.js when trying to install Interiot's tool, but got it sorted-out. I have tried over a dozen times to install the Interiot and Lupin popup scripts and it still looks a mess. I have just (again) attempted to do an exact copy and paste from the first section of User:Wisden17/monobook.js to User:Benbest/monobook.js and it still looks a mess. What am I doing wrong? Problems with logging in

Hi Wisden 17, thanks for adding me to the userlist for VandalProof. However I have problems logging in, it says that my username is incorrect? But I seem to be on the list. I'm not sure if you're the right one to attend to?

Whe I try to log in, it says it can't. I have done all the suggestions, and nothing works. I am wondering if my name got removed from the official list, or if there was a bug with the software, as I was able to use it this morning!

Attention Moderators: Toolserver

As you may be aware, the English language Wikipedia is no longer replicating data to the Wikimedia toolserver. Therefore, the data provided by Interiot's edit count tool is growing increasingly out of date, and in the interest of more accurately responding to user registration requests, I'd like to ask all moderators to look into downloading other tools for determining raw edit counts independent of the toolserver. One alternative would be Flcelloguy's Tool, although I've found his tool a little takes a considerable ammount of time to retrieve edit counts, and as such is not ideal for what we're doing. I'd also like to recommend my raw edit counter, which can be found at User:AmiDaniel/EditCounter, that provides the ability to limit the number of edits to be counted as well as the namespace in which to search and, thereby, is able to run at a much faster rate than Flcelloguy's tool. If you choose to use my tool, I recommend that you query mainspace edits with the limit set to 500 (though the default is 250, which runs somewhat faster). In my local version of VandalProof, the count button now loads this tool to query mainspace edits with a limit of 500, and, unless I find a tool more suited to our purpose, this will likely become the standard in the next release. If you choose not to download an alternative edit counter, please be sure to check the contributions of all users who fall below the standard 250 mainspace requirement, as they may have become more active within Wikipedia since the toolserver went down and now may be suited to use VandalProof. Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

Administrator Coaching The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service. This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins. Stressbusters The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome! VP mod needed

Hi, I am Eagle talk, I am a fellow moderator on VP. Currently the program is not recognizing my user name as a moderator. As such the program does not always recognize some of the changes I make to the VP official welcom page. (you know what I am talking about). This problem has been documented on User talk:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs#Moderator update is not working. I request a "Null" edit to that page, The reason is a user I added is having problems logging in.

To do a "Null" edit, just make a minute change to the page and save. Then it will accept all previous changes made to it. (which are my additions) ThanksEagle talk 20:45, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
