Some questions

About the RFC on bogdangiusca [1]: you said "Due to inactivity, I'm closing this case" - Whose inactivity? Ours? We presented the case which I believe is pretty simple. Were we supposed to do more???

About "Romani people and supposedly related ethnic groups" [2]: What exactly should we take to mediation: the relation between Romanies and other ethnic groups, or the terminology? AKoan (talk) 11:34, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Well, I'm kinda confused. For example, if somebody makes a RFC on me, and I don't respond then I get away with it?!? Anyway, he responded here: [3]. I think that case is simple and I don't know what else could be said. And the essence was not the terminology, this is already under discussion here [4] and people have a civilized attitude there. The problem is that bogdangiusca, who is also an admin, moved that page in a "illegal" way. And it is not the first time that he has a biased position because of his nationalistic agenda. We hoped that he gets a warning or something in order to avoid such "accidents" in the future. AKoan (talk) 17:57, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
You do what you think it should be done. As I said, I don't know how this works. We don't want some "advantageous decision", we just hope that bogdangiusca will respect Wikipedia's policy and the other users in the future. AKoan (talk) 08:23, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of page Podbharti

Recently noticed that the page was deleted. Funny to see that some editors said it was not notable. Its so strange that Wikipedia finds a porn site Savita_Bhabhi notable and worthy of listing and deletes pages like Podbharti and Indicast. Its a shame really, just thought I would tell you that I admonish this notion of Wikipedia and wonder why the admins don't even bother to notify the authors of the deleted pages even once before taking such drastic steps. Mere 2 votes from total strangers to the topic and they just delete the page. Huh! --Debashishc (talk) 09:43, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I wish to add a request to take a look on my talk page for the message left by Chirag who nominated then page (for no good reason) for deletion. Its not difficult to see that he is on some sort of deletion spree. He even offers me advise to nominated pages for deletion. The page deleted had enough citations in the article to make it notable. --Debashishc (talk) 10:10, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for re-listing the deletion request. I have re-worked on the article to add more citations and links from other pages. Hope it would survive this time.--Debashishc (talk) 13:55, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

FYI

Something of a discussion went on in Wknight94's talk page about Olympians. Thought you'd care. Also, did you see the way the discussion went on Anthony Slama? In my opinion, I got another one of my articles saved.

I really don't feel like doing this for all of them. The key ones to me are Robert Delaney, Brian Dinkelman, Jeff Manship, Wilson Ramos, Anthony Slama, Danny Valencia, Rene Tosoni, Alex Burnett & Cole Devries. I've gone to enough of their games to have decided that they have the greatest star potential.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 09:23, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Wizardman,

It seems I'm supposed to contact you (the deleting administrator), before going through the deletion review procedure...

I wasn't actually informed of the deletion (typical! Even though i had quite a few edits to them (Was noted about the dispution of license in response to the images)), so didn't actually know they were up for deletion until they were gone (was not really on WP much at that point)

I am after seeing if you would agree to undelete the article (and probably the albums, however, the notability of those is a bit more iffy). I am happy enough to do the undeletion myself.

You didn't actually comment in the deletion, just close and delete the articles.

To counter the first 3 points regarding notability of the band. Per WP:MUSIC

"A musician or ensemble (note that this includes a band, singer, rapper, orchestra, DJ, musical theatre group, etc.) is notable if it meets any one of the following criteria:"

The Band at least meets these 2 criteria:

  1. Has been placed in rotation nationally by any major radio network.
  2. Has been the subject of a half hour or longer broadcast across a national radio or TV network.

And possibly some of the others. [5] - They were a feature band of a Radio 2 session back in 2005. The BBC itself asserts enough notability and international credability, and with the tracks being played, it therefore means they meet the criteria.

They have also been featured in various magazines, and played at large festivals around europe

Granted, i will agree that the articles werent brilliant, and not the best sourced. If we can get it undeleted, I'm going to work on improving it, getting it better and properly sourced. And then for images, the band have said they will deal with the licensing, and sort that out if necessary

Thanks

Your entry in the Five-million pool

I have removed your entry in the Five-million pool, since at the time of entering the Wikipedia article count had already reached 2,500,000, so the pool was closed. If it is any consolation to you, I am fairly convinced that by the end of 2012 the count will still be less than 3,500,000.  --Lambiam 22:59, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia Error

Thank you. I posted the following on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball

I noticed an innaccuracy on Wikipedia. In 1979, it says:

  • September 26 - Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves earns his 20th win of the season in a win over the Houston Astros. the losing pitcher is his brother, Joe Niekro who picks up his 20th loss of the season. Joe is the last pitcher of the twentieth century to earn both 20 wins and 20 losses in a season, and is the first National League pitcher to do so since 1905. The Brothers Niekro also join brothers Jim and Gaylord Perry as the only brothers to both win 20 games in the same season.

In actuality, Phil was the brother who lost 20 games that season. I don't know how to correct that particular entry. Would it be correct to change it to read:

  • September 26 - Joe Niekro of the Houston Astros earns his 20th win of the season in a win over the Atlanta Braves. the losing pitcher is his brother, Phil Niekro who picks up his 20th loss of the season. Phil is the last pitcher of the twentieth century to earn both 20 wins and 20 losses in a season, and is the first National League pitcher to do so since 1905. The Brothers Niekro also join brothers Jim and Gaylord Perry as the only brothers to both win 20 games in the same season.

My guess is yes, but again, it is just a guess. I opt for removing it entirely.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 02:23, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Joe Connor

You beat me to it with your talk page response -- I was typing the same thing. Do you think Joe Connor will be the 2.5 millionth article? It would be nice if it were a ballplayer, but I've had a tough time finding info on him so far, other than his brother being famous. According to the 1920 and 1930 census, he was a salesman after he left baseball, but I'm not sure how to cite that (or if it counts as WP:OR). Coemgenus 17:08, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, just question. The article had several images, but a concern was raised in FA nom that these images were fair use, so I have removed much of the images. Compare the present version with this version. I am not sure if one of the images can be brought back or not. There was also a graph, but I am not well-versed in making graph or chart. Is there any project in wikipedia which can make graph for articles? Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 01:54, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Possible DYK of Joe Connor

Hi Wizardman. I've expanded Joe Connor, said to be the 2,500,000th article, to have a chance at appearing on the Main Page. I've decided to try and expand Roger Craig also, since it's not entirely clear which is the 2,500,000th article. I just thought I'd let you know. I think it would be a good idea for Wikipedia's 2,500,000th article to appear on the Main Page. -- RyRy (talk) 22:32, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Heh, don't worry, I've created/expanded many baseball articles to DYK status, and it's rather easy to get it over 1500 characters. :-) Anyway, I'll nominate it now. Feel free to tweak the hook when added if needed. Cheers! -- RyRy (talk) 22:55, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

[6] eh, you mean you wouldn't consider unblocking? –xeno (talk) 22:47, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Fair enough. Just FYI it's not a hypothetical situation and the vandal is now one of my brightest and most constructive adoptees. The reason I think that making them wait the week isn't helpful is that whereas if you show forgiveness and unblock right away, they're more likely to keep their promise of being constructive. If you make them fester the week, they're more likely to just return to vandalism as payback. Of course, that's speculative. –xeno (talk) 22:55, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Category renaming

Since you successfully moved to shift major league players by position to Major League Baseball players by position (I have no problem with that), maybe you could make a somewhat similar nomination to move Category:American Major League Baseball players by home state and its subcats to Category:American baseball players by home state and appropriate subcats; ideally, this could fold in all the Negro leaguers as well as the relatively few players under Category:American baseball players. The only potential drawback I can foresee would be a tendency to add more articles for non-major leaguers than would be ideal, but I think the advantages outweight the negatives. (It would also agree with cats like Category:American basketball players by state and Category:American football players by state, both of which need to be filled out - though I think they both should also specify home state.) MisfitToys (talk) 23:51, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Forgot to mention that the move would also allow folding in some of those under Category:Female baseball players (such as players of the AAGPBL), though they would presumably still remain in that cat as well. Also, it appears that Category:Major league baseball players by team should be retitled Category:Major League Baseball players by team. MisfitToys (talk) 18:30, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Guidance on the definition of "William M. Connolley-related pages".

Thank you for closing the WP:ANI discussion.

I am really not arguing here or trying to be belligerent, but do you have any guidance on what pages this ban actually includes? Obviously it includes William M. Connolley. Does it include edits to RealClimate which have nothing whatsoever to do with WMC, or not? Does it include edits to Lawrence Solomon as Raul wants it to, or not (assuming that they have nothing whatsoever to do with WMC)?

Any guidance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

--GoRight (talk) 00:08, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

I have another question. User:Ncmvocalist created the following page, User:GoRight/Community sanction, which is fine but I note that he altered the text of the ban from what was actually !voted on. For example:

From my topic ban proposal:

GoRight topic-banned from William Connolley-related pages - this is not to be confused with edits regarding User:William M. Connolley.

From the editing restrictions page:

GoRight is topic-banned from William Connolley-related pages - this is not to be confused with edits regarding User:William M. Connolley.

From the community sanction page:

GoRight is topic-banned William Connolley-related pages, broadly construed. This is not to be confused with making edits concerning User: William M. Connolley.

Strictly speaking, a broad interpretation was discussed but so too were a lot of other things. The language that people actually !voted on did not include the "broadly construed" language so I sort of object to this change of language by User:Ncmvocalist after the fact. Is this legitimate? --GoRight (talk) 05:02, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm just letting you know that I'm unblocking this user that you blocked as a result of the AfD drama. It seems (based on the discussion I've had with the user in deviantART, see my user page that the user in question seems to behave more or less rationally; I'm pretty convinced that this user isn't fundamentally here to stir trouble, as could be discerned from the slightly panicked behaviour in AfD and elsewhere. I'm pretty sure all inappropriate behaviour can be tutored away in this case. I've given the user an appropriate Lecture to go with the unblock. --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 15:55, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

The closing of my RfC by User:Ncmvocalist

I want to thank you for addressing the changes to the language of my topic ban by User:Ncmvocalist. While you had indicated that you were intending to review my RfC and close it, User:Ncmvocalist decided to take it upon himself to do so. I object to the language he has used in the summary thereof because he is clearly trying to bias the results there against me by implying that my topic ban was a result of the RfC which it was not. The discussion on WP:ANI which lead to the topic ban was clearly independent from the RfC discussion and not a result of any discussion that occurred there.

I have raised this issue with him on his talk page and he refuses to address my concern, [7]. There is also discussion of this on the talk page for the RfC, [8].

I tried placing my own comment explaining this fact in the summary, [9], but he subsequently reverted it, [10].

While I wish to put this entire episode behind me, [11], I object to User:Ncmvocalist's attempts to bias the record against me. I believe that he has become biased against me since he is the one that opened the Topic Ban Proposal against me, [12], and he has made biased charges against me without explaining them in any way, [13] At this point I can only assume that he is disappointed with the outcome of the topic ban and is now using his administrative authority to inflict as much damage as possible after the fact, specifically by altering the language that was voted on in the Community sanction page he created, as you saw, and attempting to link the WP:ANI result to the RfC when the two were completely independent of one another. As it stands now, his closing remark makes it appear as though an RfC was conducted and as a result thereof an WP:ANI discussion was held to institute a sanction against me. Obviously this is not how the events unfolded and I object to his attempts to make it appear so.

What is to be done here? I don't want more wikidrama but I won't let the closing of my RfC stand as it is without complaint. If necessary I intend to raise this issue on WP:ANI as I consider these actions on User:Ncmvocalist's part to be harassment after the fact and abuse of his administrative position. Your advice and assistance in resolving this matter would be greatly appreciated. --GoRight (talk) 18:56, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Relisting AfDs

Hi. I noticed you are relisting AfDs which have failure many votes. I'm not trying to challenge you on this—and perhaps this practice is official policy, perhaps you've already explained this several times before—but it seems to me that AfD nomination that has failed to attract much attention and has no "keep" votes is essentially equivalent to an uncontested PROD and could be closed as "Delete" rather than relisted. Certainly if there are few votes and a least one of them is "keep" then relisting makes senses, but relisting undisputed AfDs seems to me like unnecessarily adding to the AfD backlog. lathander afd

hi :) just wondering why you didn't delete this article when no secondary sources were provided. surely these are essential for an article to be kept...? xxx Jessi1989 (talk) 17:07, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

hmm i see what you are saying. in my opinion though, as none of the keep voters supported their vote with policy then the fact that there was no clear consensus is irrelevant. afds aren't ballots. as i understand it, a no consensus closure should only be used if there was a confict between voters both supporting their votes with policy... anyway, thanks for getting back to me xxx Jessi1989 (talk) 17:32, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Because the dispute was resolved by way of the user who had stopped editing - part of the reason why there was insufficient third party input. Your administrative warning for the future still holds - but it is not what resolved the dispute at hand. Ncmvocalist (talk) 16:45, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you (re. OAFD bot link)

Thanks for adding the link to the page update function of the bot that maintains WP:OAFD. I was not aware of it in the past (and actually only just got yelled at for not using it). However, mathbot studiously reverts you. --Falcon Darkstar Kirtaran (talk) 08:07, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
