map tutorial

Thanks for posting the tutorial. I've been wanting to learn how to do it for some time, but I ran into a problem that I'm hoping you've come across. Fast forward to the Trace Bitmap stage in Inkscape. This is the original and this is the result. I followed your directions, but it's not right. If you have any suggestions, or know another user who would, please let me know. Thanks in advance! --Fredddie 00:29, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

The same thing seems to happen on some of my maps, like this one. I guess I never noticed. Unfortunately, I didn't have much time to play with Inkscape last night (my time when you posted) and I will be away from my computer until 17:00 or 18:00 UTC (it's 11:15 right now). Hopefully, I'll have more time to button-prod then and solve this problem. Xenon54 (talk) 11:15, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
After more experimenting, it looks to be a problem with potrace. Setting the line width to .8 in QGIS seems to significantly increase potrace's ability to correctly trace the dots. See if that helps on your map. By the way, you might want to consider removing the county lines completely, as most statewide maps do not have them - cf. I-380 (IA) map.svg. Xenon54 (talk) 00:21, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
That seems to have worked. Thanks again for the tutorial. Iowa001.svg --Fredddie 06:20, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Re multiple IPAs, against rules

Having consecutive multiple IP addresses is not against WP rules. It also has nothing to do with friends or siblings editing from the same provider. It is simply the result of "dynamic IP addresses", assigned by some providers, that the computer comes up with a new IP address on every new reboot/start. So it is an unavoidable technical consequence of the way how the provider works with his communication protocol, and unavoidable for anonymous editors with dynamic IPA assignment. But in this case you never have several IP addresses at the same time, so it is no case of multiple identities, sock puppets etc. Regards 70.137.130.4 (talk) 20:44, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

You seem to be mis-interpreting my post. (For reference, it's at WP:HD#Same IP?.) I understand that dynamic IP addresses are not against the rules. You were being disruptive (which is against the rules), according to the original poster of that Help desk question. The OP was asking if it was the same person, and I said it was very likely. I never intended to accuse you of sockpuppetry or the like. I intended to simply tell the OP that they are probably dealing with the same person, gave them tips as to how to inform you of your disruptiveness, and told them what to do if you don't stop being disruptive. If my post read as a sockpuppetry accusation, I apologise. Xenon54 (talk) 21:54, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Zachera included the player moderator crowns but licenced his image under the Creative Commons licence. As the player moderator crowns are copyright Jagex, this is a copyright issue. The image must be tagged as fair use. Xenon54 (talk) 11:08, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
It's now been deleted under CSD F3 - improper licence. Xenon54 (talk) 11:12, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Fairr play. I should have done more research. Will a cookie make it up :P ? Elemael (talk) 13:11, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

New TBBT character articles

I'm in the midst of creating the new articles for the main TBBT characters, as was discussed briefly on the "List of TBBT characters" talk page previously. I have a limited time to work with at the moment, and after my edits there are still a lot of cite errors on the new articles due to cites not being complete (as they were simply copied from the original article). I will continue to fix these issues later today into tomorrow, but in the meantime welcome all other users to assist in the transition.

The original article, List of characters in The Big Bang Theory, can either be merged into The Big Bang Theory, or better yet, changed to incorporate the new articles (i.e., the full descriptions are removed in favor of shorter descriptions, and the list of secondary/tertiary characters remains. I recommend the latter, which I will do upon return to editing tomorrow. Thanks. — `CRAZY`(lN)`SANE` 17:43, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

Hello, I hope you are doing well. I am sending you this message since you are listed as a GA reviewer. I would like to invite you to consider helping with the GA sweeps process. Sweeps helps to ensure that the oldest GAs still meet the criteria, and improve the quality of GAs overall. Unfortunately, last month only two articles were reviewed. This is definitely a low point after our peak at the beginning of the process when 163 articles were reviewed in September 2007. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. All exempt and previously reviewed articles have already been removed from the list. Instead of reviewing by topic, you can consider picking and choosing whichever articles interest you.

We are always looking for new members to assist with the remaining articles, so if you are interested or know of anybody that can assist, please visit the GA sweeps page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. If only 14 editors achieve this feat starting now, we would be done with Sweeps! Of course, having more people reviewing less articles would be better for all involved, so please consider asking others to help out. Feel free to stop by and only review a few articles, something's better than nothing! Take a look at the list, and see what articles interest you. Let's work to complete Sweeps so that efforts can be fully focused on the backlog at GAN. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Thanks for the help!

Thanks for helping Xenon! Enjoy a delicious snack :)

Thanks for your quick and helpful answer to my three questions through the helpme system yesterday. Being a very new contrib here at WP, the large amount and complexity of the policies, guidelines, and help docs can be very daunting at first (not to mention that some of them are fragmented, incomplete, and poorly written). Please know that I did try to crawl through the help files and find an answer before I used the helpme system. It it comforting to know there is a system in place where users can easily and quickly ask for assistance from the seasoned WP contributors. More importantly, it is wonderful to know that there are users such as yourself that take the time out of their day to help us new folks get started by very promptly answering the helpme inquiries. Thanks kindly. --Milo | MiloKral (talk) 18:19, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

OK, not exactly true but I couldn't pass up the almost parallel construction. I did see your advice to the person asking about starting a new article, and want to make sure you understand I'm not responding to you personally. I've seen the response many times, and I have no idea why it was this time that it struck me as wrong. In any event, I'm looking forward to discussion of what the best response should be, including the possibility that my assumptions are incorrect, and it really is the best advice.--SPhilbrickT 14:19, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Help Desk reply

Per: Infobox building website, excuse me? How was that not helpful? I said, why would a building have a website (which was my honest opinion). Then I told him to start a discussion on this on the template's talk page, where's the flaw? Per: Newton's cradle, how would that give someone seizure? A slow paced animation where only certain parts move? Not seeing it • S • C • A • R • C • E • 01:04, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

You shouldn't really be inserting your opinion into an answer - especially the way you phrased it, it might come across as a bit smart-arsed. That's what I was getting at, just a bit of constructive criticism. I apologise if it came off as a personal attack, because it wasn't meant to be one. As for the Newton's cradle, I was talking about that in combination with the blinking text and odd colours. If voices can give people seizures, then I'm sure that could too - plus it's rather annoying. What does a Newton's cradle have to do with a user talk page? Xenon54 (talk) 01:53, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Are you not supposed to give an opinion? Why would a building have a website unless it's some sort of bank or a similar structure, then you wouldn't want to use that infobox. As for the seizure, I was planning a total reconstruction on my userpage/talk page but haven't really felt like it. I guess I'll do it anyway. I'm planning to upload an animated version of this file, I'm going to have the background be bright yellow and blinking plus other fun stuff! Analog switch

Hi. Yes i have heard of the analog switch.............but they are still on the analog. Its not like it disappeared. What they mean by switching off the analog, is that the station doesn't pay for it anymore. We still get it, but we need a tuner box thingy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Endrizzi427 (talkcontribs) 00:08, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

No, that's not right. Analog has disappeared. Analog signals are no longer licensed by the FCC, so it is currently illegal for a full-power station to run an analog signal. (Low powered stations and such still are allowed to run analog signals.) The converter boxes are for old TVs that don't have an ability to receive digital signals. Xenon54 (talk) 00:22, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

hi, i didn't mean to be rood in my email i sent you. But are you the one who sets up these webpages? If so, you should edit the pic of knbc, making it chroma, like the wnbc pic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Endrizzi427 (talkcontribs) 00:11, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm afraid I can't, as the logo is property of NBC. Editing it would get me in copyright trouble. Xenon54 (talk) 00:22, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Do you have any idea what your winning word was at your school, out of curiosity? (I take it you're from Virginia) And, yes, please do put this behind us. Sorry if my "apology" was a tad bit on the long side, I just tend to be chatty. & you should definitely be watching the ABC finals next year 'cause I intend to be in 'em!!! (Seriously.) RE: CNN Story

Thanks for the response to my help desk question. Once again, the media is completely out of touch and doesn't understand how we work.. 99% of the people either are in an ignorant bliss of not understanding anything about Wikipedia or are insistant that Wikipedia is an unreliable source without even attemting to know how we work, and just assume that Wikipedia is a chaos of random people. In the wise words of Jimbo Wales (userpage here):

Mabye the day will come when everybody developes a better understanding of Wikipedia, but until that time, we need to get up and edit Wikipedia!.

Ojay123 (TalkE-MailContribsSandbox) 23:19, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

You are absolutely right. The media likes to think they are "relevant" by writing stories about things like Wikipedia but the end result makes it clear that they are utterly incapable of telling the truth, instead spreading on the whole "Wikipedia editors are nerds who live with mother" and "Wikipedia is completely unreliable" thing. I've ranted enough for now, I guess, and I'm glad I could answer your question. Xenon54 / talk / 00:10, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

You are right - you can't be blocked for not editing. You can be blocked for not editing constructively, or, as you've been told, if it's evident you are not here to build the encyclopaedia. I'm not trying to scare you - I'm not that type of person. You just misinterpreted my warning. I was trying to tell you that if you continued editing in your current pattern, there could be a risk of a block by an admin who perhaps didn't fully understand your situation. Refactoring

Initially this user was refactoring under his own id, later (I presume it to be the same user) started refactoring the talk pages using his ip address. Some of the refactoring have been undone by me, but some I left it as it is, so that concerned persons can have a look at it.

Do I have sufficient rights & privileges to warn a user, I was under impression warnings have to be issued by an administrator. It would be better, if after a review the warnings are issued by an administrator or this would become an unnecessary issue between me & him. Sarvagyana guru (talk) 06:14, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

I looked at some of the edits and it appears the user in question is making their comments come from you (and mispelling your username). Begin with a {{uw-tpv2}} left on their talkpage. Then, if they continue, leave a {{uw-tpv3}}, and if they still refuse to stop, {{uw-vandalism4}}. If they still refactor your comments, then you report to WP:AIV, where an administrator will determine whether there is sufficient grounds to block the user. Also, it seems you need a refresher on what actions are reserved for admins so I suggest you read Wikipedia:Administrators/Tools. Xenon54 / talk / 11:50, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
Also please refer User talk:Kishore209, which has been vandalised by the same user, and Talk:Nair#Nairs_are_Kshatriyas where the said user has edited the talk page of this user and various other users giving a completely different meaning of what the user really intended to convey. Anyway thanks, I think the Talk page of this article must be one of the most vandalised of all Wikipedia articles. I presume, these users are tracking my Contribution and after reading this, they will refrain from such acts in futur without any further warning Sarvagyana guru (talk) 16:46, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Be sure to include diffs, which can be found by going into your contributions, clicking on the date of the edit in which you posted your information, and then copying the URL and pasting it into an e-mail to that address. "edit this page" timestamp

Thanks for posting an answer to my question--it still seems incorrect though. If UTC is the same as London, Dublin, etc., then Toronto (EST) would be -5 hours meaning that the article edit time "14:06 UTC" should be "9:06 EST" right? This would mean something is still a mystery regarding how I could have been listening to a radio broadcast and reading about the event at the same time. Maybe the radio show I was listening to was not "live" as stated? I asked this question because also I've noticed that when I receive emails from my webserver, I will find that the timestamp regarding when an email was received seems different than when I am opening it. This I would have to ask my server I suppose, but this was also part of my reason for wanting to get an answer as to how a timestamp is generated.

P.S. I don't quite understand the request for signing with "70.31.7.92 (talk) 19:02, 28 September 2009 (UTC)".

UTC is independent of any time zone, and is not affected by Daylight Savings Time. British Standard Time is the same as UTC, but British Summer Time is UTC+1. Currently, the US and Canada are under Daylight Saving Time (= Eastern Daylight Time, EDT), so they are one hour closer to UTC than they would be under Standard Time. EST is UTC-5, but EDT is UTC-4, so 14:06 UTC would be 09:06 EST and 10:06 EDT. I can't really help you with the server issue, perhaps it's an issue with the server itself?
Signing with ~~~~ allows us to see who left a particular message and in incredibly important, especially now that Sinebot (a robot that automatically signs unsigned posts) is broken. Xenon54 / talk / 20:41, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
