PAKHIGHWAY

As you are already aware[1] that he has been socking and last sock was blocked by Bbb23, it might be surprising to hear that PAKHIGHWAY was a returning user and his main account was blocked a long time ago for sockpuppetry. Possibly. The technical evidence for the original sockmaster would probably have expired by now, so there's likely nothing that a checkuser can do, but if the evidence is convincing, we can merge the reports I suppose. --Yamla (talk) 12:45, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Unable to Contact Individual

Hi, I've recently (as in a minute ago) nominated a page for speedy deletion as it appears to have entirely been ripped from the biography page of the bands website. I am unable to contact the person who made the page as they have been indefinitely banned as a sockpuppet of another Russian account I can't pronounce the name of. Is there any process for incidents such as this for whom I'm supposed to notify?Jyggalypuff (talk) 17:20, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

No need for you to take further action. Nominating it for speedy deletion means that it shows up in the list of candidates for speedy deletion for copyvios, so it'll be taken care of by the people who monitor that list. It's generally a good idea to also notify the original and/or primary authors of the page but as you saw, that's a blocked user in this case. --Yamla (talk) 17:27, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

I noticed you mass-deleted a page created by a banned user that was being discussed at AfD with four keep votes to only two deletes: see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Amirul Ikmal Hafiz. Since the AfD was already ongoing with keep votes, I do not believe WP:SPEEDY applies here. I performed the mass delete because the author was evading a block. WP:RBI (which is an essay, not general policy) encourages throwing away such contributions to discourage abuse. I don't mind (at all) you restoring individual articles if you feel it is appropriate, and if you have the technical ability to do so. I'd rather not restore it myself, but will do so at your direction if you wish. I mean that sincerely; I defer to your judgment here, just clarifying why exactly I deleted it. --Yamla (talk) 20:14, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
I think your reasoning for deletion was great and I appreciate the cleanup. None of us at AfD knew it qualified for G5, which is a reason to delete per G5 - I'd just like to save a valid article if I can. It looks like someone already undeleted the page. Thanks! Guideline and policy news

  • After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
  • Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

It's a good question. I thought about it, but in the past, I've had push-back when I just arbitrarily go in and G5 while an AfD is running. Especially as I declined this user's unblock request, I figured it was just safest to note my opinion and leave it to someone else. Yamla, with full respect, I would like to clarify why I added it back the old "block talk" on my Talk page. The reason is that some one come to my Talk page and trying to hide my talk to appeal the block. I did not know that revert it back will trigger another review. Sorry about that. However, I do want to bring it to your attention that there are editors in "graph database wikipage" trying to do many attack to other editors. Spurious Proxy Detection

Hi there, you recently responded to an unblock request for my IP. I use a VPN while using the internet from public Wi-Fi, but not at home. I was not using the VPN or a proxy at the time of attempting to edit, and after clearing my browser’s Wikipedia cookies the block message actually disappeared. I suspect the block detection is caching its status in the session or cookies in some way which leads to apparently spurious results. I don’t really know where else to report this, but it seems like a serious bug in the way blocks are handled. 70.79.35.154 (talk) 18:48, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

Freewasp

I'm a little confused as to why you declined her unblock request. Is it because you don't believe she is MacPraughn's wife or because you believe that even if she is, she should remain blocked. I had planned to unblock her (and MacPraughn) with a strong caution to both that they avoid editing the same articles and discussions, even though WP:FAMILY permits them to do that as long as they declare their relationship (beyond the declarations on their userpages). I'm okay with you unblocking if they agree to your restrictions. Given that the account was (apparently) created from the same browser and given they only edited the same articles, I think this is perhaps WP:LITTLEBROTHER. Sure, but at least one of your other links was. And theculturetrip doesn't really fit in to WP:RS anyway. The CIA World Factbook does (though understandably, some people are reluctant to use that as a source), as would official government pages for that particular government. A newspaper article from a newspaper of record would also be sufficient, but be careful here. A lot of newspapers aren't reliable sources, and even the reliable ones sometimes open up a blog space. --Yamla (talk) 12:49, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

From a query I ran an hour or so ago I notice that Talk:National_Animal_of_Pakistan, Talk:National_Epic_of_Pakistan, Talk:National_Flag_of_Pakistan were G8 candidates. They have already been deleted, but you may want to have a look at who created them. The titles are archetypical for Zeshan Mahmood, and creating them in ns:1 is a classical trick where the IP/non-autoconfirmed hopes that someone will move it to ns:0. Technical news

  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

Hello Yamla, I just notice FifthHouseGuy was registered a week after user Horwayboys (a sockpuppet of Hananmuzaffar786) was blocked and recreated their deleted article Rising Kashmir and was editing in the same area including user Inked Soul who recreated Saint Solomon High School and as per his first edit (creating /common.js), he doesn't seem to be a brand new user so any idea if they are connected to the master? Can you please take a look at user Bilalrahal, KarenLima33 and Mostafaelgammal all editing in the same area. Bilalrahal declined to have any CoI on my talk page but there is some outer-wiki evidence that confirms he works for the artist (Google "Bilal rahal" Bia) and I believe they hired KarenLima33 to create Bia Mustafa Alloush which was earlier created by Bilalrahal himself using a different account Bilalrahal1. Yamla please can you explain your recent post. Does this mean my request to be unblocked is declined or does this mean I have the option to decline being unblocked. I am new to this, but recently I was blocked when I tried to edit my own page, I then received help from a Wiki Administrator who allowed me to make the changes via a talk page. I have done so on your behalf. There's nothing stopping you putting it back if you wish, or I'm happy to do so. But I believe your intention was to remove that as it is no longer relevant, so I was trying to be helpful. :) Wikipedia can indeed be a minefield at times. Heck, it can be frustrating for people like me with more than a decade of experience. Actions that are appropriate on other sites, aren't here. It's because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia rather than a social network or business directory, but that can be legitimately confusing at times. Technical news

  • Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Wikipedia. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Wikipedia will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.
  • A user script is now available to quickly review unblock requests.
  • The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.

Arbitration

  • Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.
  • The Arbitration Committee's email address has changed to arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Other email lists, such as functionaries-en and clerks-l, remain unchanged.

Hi Yamla, could you please determine if or not this article is right to be labeled with refimprove and OR templates? "Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture "

It's of a historic nature of topic, moderately large, and yet 99% of it is completely unsourced, which would make you think that counts as "possibly contains original research". But one of the major contributors to the page seems to have an issue with that. I think otherwise; I feel readers have a right to be warned that the article may contain OR and is unverified, and fellow users should be informed in case they would like to improve upon it.

In fact, even the title of the article seems to be WP:OR. It was changed from Indo-Saracen to "Indo-Saracen Revival architecture" in September 2009 [8]. Based on a google search, I can't find any articles or journals online that use this phrase pre-2009. Rather, I think the name might have caught some traction post-2010 because of this article in a WP:REFLOOP phenomenon. DA1 (talk) 08:21, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
