As it states at Wikipedia:Stub, at the top of most stub categories, and in many other places on Wikipedia, it is recommended that new stub types are proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it is otherwise correctly formatted, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, and whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there as to any rationale for this stub type. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

British Paralympic Swimmers

Hi, i've created articles on Sascha Kindred and Nyree Lewis and was hoping you would be able to take a quick look at them and add in any further information or links you can think of from a swimming side of things. I'm thinking of nominating them for DYK, based on their nickname of "The Golden Couple" (note a very original nickname i know), as it would be suitably topical given the ongoing Games. DEFAULTSORT

Hi Yboy83, I have noticed you have been adding the DEFAULTSORT template to articles recently. Just to let you know that this feature is a magic word and not a template, and the correct construction is {{DEFAULTSORT:Sortkey}} rather than {{DEFAULTSORT|Sortkey}} or {{defaultsort|Sortkey}}, using ":" instead of "|". The template was created to prevent confusion and shouldn't be used as it creates an uneeded dependency on a template. Please ask if you have any questions. Triathlon advice

After seeing your proposed wikiproject I created Survival of the Shawangunks. Afterwards I discovered that there is a barely-more-detailed page at SOS triathlon. American Record/US Open Record

Yboy83, just FYI: the "r" in "Record" and the "o" in "Open" of "American Record" and "US Open Record" are capitalized as they are part of the name of the record--they aren't common words there. This would be on the List of United States records in swimming. And if you insist on thinking them "common", reconsider the "Open" capitalization, as the record is never referred to as "US" as the lower-casing would imply: it is either "US Open" or "Open" record. Good work

... on the triathlon project. But I was a bit surprised you didn't request a bot run to add the project banners (WP:BOTREQ). A standard, very common type of request that they can do fairly easily. Also has the advantage (I think) that you can get the bot to do things like add the biography project tag (to people only, of course) if one is not present, set the class rating from existing project banners if present, or set it to stub if a stub tag is present, nest multiple banners, add the sports-and-games workgroup to the biog tag, that sort of thing. A big time-saver.

I'm also conscious I need to reply on the {{Infobox Triathlete}} template, but I know that is going to take a long time to research and get right. It's likely to be a major effort, difficult to fit in at the moment. I'll just note, for now, that I don't like its present state very much.

Rating spree

I noticed that you rated 80 swimmer articles in the span of about 30 minutes today. Assuming it takes at least 10 seconds to actually do the task of typing the rating, that means you are spending about 15-20 seconds reviewing each article. While there is a terrible backlog in reviewing articles, I do not think that this type of willy-nilly rating is the solution. While such speed might be feasible to mark clear stub articles as such, it is certainly not sufficient time to give an accurate rating to non-stub articles. This caught my attention in part due to my own ego in seeing several of my articles rated as "start" class articles. For example, the Harry Holiday has 10,000 bytes of information, 21 in-line-cited sources, and two images. I don't think you can give an accurate rating to such an article based on a 15-20 second look, and doing so tends to lessen the reliability of ratings. Dick Kimball is another example with 14,000 bytes and 16 in-line-cited sources. I would suggest that you slow down in rating longer articles like these. Cbl62 (talk) 20:28, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Prior to my "rating spree" there were something like 1300 unassessed articles under the auspices of WP:WikiProject Swimming, a number which I expect to increase massively once my WP:Bot request is processed. The "rating spree" was intended to clear some of this backlog, and you will see the majority (I guess ~95%) of my assessments were for Stub-Class articles, which can be made in the time scale you mention (even lower possibly - CTRL+V comes in very handy!) You will notice my edit summary mentioned the word "quick"! Those articles that I assessed at a level of Start-Class or higher are not final assessments - in my quick assessment it just meant it wasn't a stub, but deserved at least some assessment rather than Unassessed-Class. I fully intend to revisit the Start-Class articles for more appropriate assessments once the backlog of unassessed articles has reached a more manageable level. I used the term "rating spree" as it was a term you had used in describing your actions. I fully appreciate the backlog, but respectfully suggest that you do not rate longer articles in such a short time span. For example, you rated the 14,000 byte Dick Kimball article at 19:31, and in that same 60-second span you also rated articles on Doli Akhter, Dmitry Kokarev, Dmitry Kalinovsky, and Ditte Jensen. That's about 10 seconds per article. Rating a 10,000 or 14,000 byte article with multiple sources simply cannot be cedibly done (even using CTRL+V and as what you call a "quick" assessment) in 10 seconds. Your rating of stubs in such a manner is fine, but it would really be much better to take more care in rating the longer, more substantial ones. Cbl62 (talk) 21:44, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Leicester Penguins SC

You are WRONG about the copyright issue. 1) There is NO copyright on the website for text I have copied and 2) the Original text was written by ME on the Leicester Penguins Swimming Club website anyway along woth most of the other stuff. Also it is not orphaned, there is a link from Leicester in the sport section. There are currently no other obvious places to place another link to Leicester Penguins, when there is I will do this. Some comments in reply:

• I suggest you re-read the orphan banner – it says "This article is an orphan, as few or no other articles link to it". One link in one article is insufficient to satisfy removal of this banner.
• The content on the club website does not have any copyright statement saying the text belongs to you, hence it is assumed the content belongs to the club, and not to you – therefore it would appear to be a copyright violation.
• You do however have a conflict of interest with this article, so it is suggested (as per the warning on your talk page) that you exercise great caution when editing articles of organisations with which you are closely associated.
• Finally, the article in question does not identify why it is notable for inclusion in WikiPedia. It is possible that the article may be deleted in the future.

• How many links would be sufficient for this article not to be classed as an orphan ? I would like more links but where do I put them without being seen as promoting the club ?
• This article is no more or less conflict of interest or notable for inclusion in WikiPedia than any other article on a sports club I've read on WikiPedia. Which is what I did to get a feel for what was required for this type of article. Somebody reading this article from the other side of the world is not going to pay money and join the swim club, the article is purely there for information purposes only as part of swimming in UK. The people who do pay money and join the club are local to the club and that is where it is advertised and promoted, not WikiPedia. I don't see where you're coming from?
• Copyright - OK then the club owns the text I used. Myself along with the rest of the exec committee for the club represent the club and its members best interest and therefore any copyright issues. They give me permission to use this informative text on WikiPedia - How would you like proof of this for your issue with copyright to go away ?

Flag icons

Hi Yboy83, I noticed that you removed the flag from the infobox on the David Davies page. It seems quite usual to have a nationality flag in the infobox of swimmers, divers & water polo players' pages (e.g. Grant Hackett, Klete Keller, João Havelange, Katie Hoff, Haley Ishimatsu, Jason Lezak, Yevgeny Lagunov, Roxana Maracineanu, Stefan Hirniak, Nelson Mora). As you haven't responded, I've reinstated the nationality flag in the infobox on the David Davies page. In addition to those I mentioned above, three out of the four swimming featured articles include nationality flags: Kevin O'Halloran; Sandra Morgan; and Faith Leech). I keep tabs on all British swimmers, and there are no others on my watchlist that have a flag template used in the Infobox nationality field. This is because it is clearly stated in the template documentation that flag templates should not be used. Yes it is true that many many other swimmers' articles contain flag icons in this field, however this is what is in the documentation and I have done my part in following that with the articles which I follow. I see it now, and my apologies. In that case a new set of templates will need to be created then. on the space before the little "m"

Hey Yboy83, I've observed that you have a quest (or partial quest) to insert the space between the distance/height and the meter "m" on event names ("as per WP:MOS") . Just wanted to point out that FINA actually doesn't have said space on its page:

• the swimming World Record page has "50m" "100m", etc. over "50 m" "100 m", etc.),
• diving results show "1m" "3m" "10m"; and
• Open water is likewise "10km".

The style guidelines mention following the sources... maybe this is a case for that? Hooperswim (talk) 03:40, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Quote (Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Unit names and symbols): "Values and unit symbols are separated by a non-breaking space. The {{nowrap}} template or the   character can be used for this purpose. For example, use 10 m or 29 kg, not 10m or 29kg." I have read "Unit names & numbers", but thank you for pointing it out. That formatting is in conflict with the sources and with Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Follow the sources. On lower-casing "common" names

I noticed that you lower-cased the "common nouns" on Open water swimming at the 2007 World Aquatics Championships. Just FYI: "Open Water" is the event category name, and therefore not a common noun in its usage (the equivalent would be to call you "yboy83" instead of "Yboy83"). Likewise for "5K" "10K" "25K" (which you changed to "5 km" making it a common descriptive term related to the race distance). Record in swimming

Many thanks for your advice. I'm anxious to follow them. I'm very interested in realizing a high and equal standard of all swimming record statistics. The problem with refs from news articles is, that they often intact just over a short period. Isn't the competition's official result sheet the best reference you can get?? Maybe the one from each swim track, even more when news articles can't be found? In this case you maybe advice to abandon the reference? Thank you for answer and please sorry for my bad english. Possible tweaks to "Yboy83/Records in swimming" ?

Yboy83, can you tweak the generic formatting you have here, User:Yboy83/Records in swimming, so that the athlete name is more likely to be on one line (and not split on 2 or 3)? A couple ways to accomplish this might be:

• moving the country (and flag?) to a second line (leaving the city on the first) in the "location" field; and/or
• inserting a line break in the IM and relay fields (between the distance and the event type).

Relay splits may be of issue.

Another qualm I have with this format is that you can get in the middle of a record section/table (or near the end), and no longer have the headings on screen. So a reader might not know where they really are on the page. I don't have a suggestion about how to alleviate this issue with this format, but wanted to mentioned it in case you did.

Proposed deletion of 2008 in swimming

The article 2008 in swimming has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

An article for swimming in 2008 is not normal; i.e. it can be compiled through categories, so why is there a need for an article discussing swimming on 2008? (Do we have to create separate articles for swimming in 2007, 2006, etc. as well as basketball in 2008, 2009; hurdles in 2007, 2003?, etc.)

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. JL 09 _^q?c 15:41, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Survival of the Shawangunks

I removed your assessment of Survival of the Shawangunks because your "quick" assessment was unintentionally confusing and somewhat counterproductive. An article with nine sources probably shouldn't be rated "start," and in this case was rated "C" by a far more established WikiProject. I understand that different projects may use different criteria, but based on the criteria I reviewed at WP:TRI and your self-admitted "quick" assessment, I think it's better to allow this article to be assessed by an editor that has the time to do so more thoroughly than your challenging academic demands likely allow. Like other editors have implied on your talk page, I am of the view that "quick" assessments give other editors the false impression that the assessment is complete - better practice is to leave an article in the unassessed backlog until a full assessment can be performed; there is no way to flag "partially assessed" articles on Wikipedia. Removing WikiProject Swimming banner

Thanks for cleaning up the many articles that you feel would be better categorised as WikiProject SCUBA. As you can see from the lack of response to your request at WT:WikiProject SCUBA#Message from WikiProject Swimming, WP SCUBA is not as active as WP Swimming, alas. I'm going through Category:Underwater diving stubs at the moment, assessing them by class. I'm very worried about removing another WikiProject's banner, but if you are willing to trust my judgement, I'd be happy to remove the WikiProject Swimming banner, where it's clear that the only swimming involved is scuba. I can re-sweep the stubs and I've got another couple of hundred unassessed scuba-related articles to grade, so I could be of help to you. --RexxS (talk) 19:17, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
