Placement of a Source[edit]

I have come across a "wikisource author" tag that sits on the far right. Is there a way to place it in the center or far left? If so, I would like to know.

Yes, but it would involving substituting the template right onto the page, and editing the HTML code. I would advise again it; it's like this uniformity. The reason it looks so ugly may have to do with its placement on the page more than anything else; it's supposed to look like this: WP:DUMB. Requested photo provided.[edit]

I added photos to a couple articles that were listed under "Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in [state]." How do I remove them from the list now that the photos are provided? Learn the language. Online translators make Borat sound like Shakespeare, and knowing more than one language is one of the best skills anyone can learn. Editing an Image posted on Wikipedia[edit]

New and IP users can only edit the license information of an image. Someone who's been an editor for 4 or more days can move an image, or upload another image to replace the old one. Finally, if you want to delete an image you've created, you can type this exact phrase at the top (including the brackets): {{db-author}}. An administrator will remove it eventually. If it is an image someone else created, you'll have to go through the established Wikipedia:Deletion policy to give a reason for deletion. Ask back again here if that is the case and you're confused. Editing the first paragraph of an article[edit]

Dear Sir/Madam:

First and foremost, I would like to apologize for any English mistake I might have made in this letter. Secondly, I would like to congratulate you for the innitiative of making this encyclopedia and wish you luck and skill in managing it.

I would like to ask you a question about editing. I need to alter the contents of the first paragraph of an article in the section before the "contents" gray box. However, there is no "edit" link to this section, and if I click at the great "edit this page" link at the page top, I will edit all the article, even if I need to do it only at the first section. And it should be noted that this edtition will place a gigantic space (for what I have really altered) in your history data base.

So, what should I do? If there is nothing I could do, I strongly suggest you include from now on a new "edit" mini-link in the first section, befor the "content" gray box, just like all the other sections.

Just click the 'edit this page' link at the top. The whole article will appear in the edit window, but that doesn't mean you have to edit all of it. If you make your changes to the first paragraphs and click 'save', the rest of the article will be unaffected.

However, there is a custom script which will allow you to edit the '0th' section only. Just copy and paste the contents of Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Add edit section 0 into User:Ivan Linares/monobook.js, purge your cache, and you should see a new tab. --Sam Blanning^(talk) 03:40, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you're the very technical sort, you can try adding the following text to your monobook.js file at Special:MyPage/monobook.js. This will make it so that when you log in, the top paragraph will contain an edit button like the other sections :

You can edit the first section simply by copying the url of one of the edit buttons on a page then replacing the last value in the url with zero (0). So, for instance if you wanted to edit the first section of Wikipedia you would take the URL, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia&action=edit&section=1 and replace the end with "=edit&section=0".--Fuhghettaboutit 05:23, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template:NBCNightlyNewsCorrespondents[edit]

Hello all,

First off, apologies if there exists a better place to ask this question; I spent a while browsing the directory but came up empty-handed. Anyway, I recently created Template:NBCNightlyNewsCorrespondents listing all the correspondents of NBC Nightly News (I plan on doing the same for ABC and CBS). I was wondering if there was anyone out there who might be able to inform me if anchors (such as Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw, etc.) could be considered correspondents, and thus should be included in the template. Having grown up watching evening news, I'm under the impression that anchors often file reports much like other regular correspondents, and should be considered correspondents as well, but I'm not entirely sure. Change Font in Wikipedia[edit]

How can I change the font that is used to display WIKIPEDIA.

The font that is used at the moment is in my opinion very "unreadable" I would like to change it to ARIAL

It's a browser thing. If it's not the default font on your machine, you made a change in how websites are displayed on your machine. editing Categories[edit]

Hi there, I've been puzzling for a while on how these are edited. For instance, in the Category 'Chess players by nationality', I would like to add some new sub-categories to the existing 62. But clicking on the 'Edit this Page' tab doesn't offer any sub-category text to edit - just the names of the Categories at the foot of the article. What am I missing?

Newbie: attempted edit of non-wikipedia site using wikipedia syntax.[edit]

I attempted to add a link to a page. I'm a newbie, so I used the sandbox. This is what worked in the sandbox:

I went to the page, made the change, and the above text was visible, looking something like [ [Object_oriented|OOA/D] ], no link. I removed the attempted edit. What did I do wrong? :-)

The page I was attempting to edit was:

I did notice that the sandbox page had icons for things like external links, whereas the edit page I was offered did not. Also, the tutorial mentioned giving a reason for the edit, and there was no reason given.

I was apparently off the wikipedia site and therefore under a different set of rules (the most likely explanation, I'm sure.)

Would be a good idea to put a caution in the tutorial? Something about how easy it is to try to edit something one thinks is part of the wikipedia, when it is not.

Check out this page. The Wiki software that runs the Wikipedia is MediaWiki. The wiki that you tried to edit is using different software than the Wikipedia, and thus has different syntax. I had read that, but it doesn't seem to help with quoted strings containing non-WikiWord format. The text I'm trying to add a link to is 'OOA/D'. The reason is that I was unsure myself whether the A stood for Architecture or Analysis, so I thought a link would help others. I can't use a WikiWord, because the text is in a quote. I just left it the way it was.

The link section of the page you sent me doesn't seem to address the question of how to link to wikipedia pages from non-WikiWords, or did I just miss it somehow?

Difference[edit]

From Wikipedia:Portal:

Portals are pages intended to serve as "Main Pages" for specific topics or areas. Portals may be associated with one or more WikiProjects; unlike WikiProjects, however, they are meant for both readers and editors of Wikipedia, and should promote content and encourage contribution.

Articles, on the other hand, describe a given subject, while a portal is a page with little information on it, but with many links to various articles on subjects relating to the subject of the portal. So, for instance, the Aviation portal won't really have much information on aviation on it, but will have many links to interesting articles about aviation, some recent events in aviation, and more on it.

Harassment[edit]

A few people have been harassing me after I made a change to Treaty of Nöteborg. First some guy shows up claiming I'm some other user and posting things on my page. Then another guy shows up threatening me with blockage and stalking me half way across Wikipedia (undoing something that doesn't make any sense). I then took to see who this person and undid one of his edits (something that didn't make any sense to me). Then he comes back calling me names, claiming I should be blocked for stalking him (HE WAS THE ONE STALKING ME!). I left a message on this guys page telling him not to stalk me, but he removed the message saying "plonk".

Why am I being harassed and how come no one is doing something about it?

I just created a new account and didn't provide an e-mail address.

When I try to log in now - I'm told I am using an incorrect password BUT I'm sure I'm not as I only just recorded it.

I could open a new account I guess BUT I would prefer to keep the user name I chose.

DO I have any GOOD options?

If you didn't provide an email address, your only option is to remember the password you used. Check with and without Caps Lock in case you've got the case wrong, and think about a possible misspelling you might have used by mistake. I have a user sandbox, because I need a place where I can quickly retrieve my most frequently used templates (mostly AfD stuff), and also to fiddle around with wikimarkup problems. someone (I can't find out who) deleted it this morning. I've restored your sandbox. You placed a db tag on the page, which qualified it for speedy deletion. I did not realise that you were just experimenting. If you want to place a template on a page without having the template transclued into it, use {{template|template_name}}, which in your case would be {{template|db-u1}}, which shows up as {{db-u1}}. Asking for information[edit]

I would like to know how to ask for anyone to add more about a subject - typically something specific. I don't have anything to add or change, so I don't want to edit anything.

For example, under the topic of James Clark Maxwell, its said "...Maxwell showed that waves of oscillating electric and magnetic fields travel through empty space ....". I want to ask someone to explain how the equations predict the existance of waves of electromagnetism?

To suggest additions or request information, you can use the talk page of the article (Talk:James Clark Maxwell), or you can ask the reference desk, which doesn't generally do article expansion but does answer questions (and is more frequently-visited than article talk pages). misspelled pagenames and redirects[edit]

Hi! I wanted to contribute to articles in Political Science, so I went to Social Sciences and Philosophy: requested articles and found an article on the "Allias Paradox". I looked it up online, and I realized that no such thing existed, and that the request actually referred to the "Allais paradox", for which a page already exists. So I edited the Social Sciences and Philosophy: requested articles page and corrected the spelling to "Allais". The link, however, kept showing up in red. I realized that this was because the existing page was "Allais paradox", whereas the requested page now was "Allais Paradox" with a capital P. So I edited that page and inserted a redirect to "Allais paradox", but now I'm not sure whether that was the right procedure to follow.

Isn't there a way to make the namepage case-insensitive? And I also have another question: does an empty page named "Allias Paradox" (the original misspelled name)exist somewhere? In that case it should probably be deleted, right?One more thing: when you start editing an article that was requested, are you supposed to edit the Requested Articles page and remove the link? Case sensitivity is just the way the software works, I think - besides, it's useful for disambiguation, for example between a concept and a film/book/band/ named after the concept. (I know I've seen an example but none spring to mind). Anyway, there's no Allias paradox or Allias Paradox. I'm not sure about Requested articles - I think you remove them once they're done, but can't find any instructions on that. --Sam Blanning^(talk) 15:08, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does an empty page named "Allias Paradox" exist somewhere? Typing the link Allias Paradox gives red, so no. (Empty pages can be deleted by placing {{db-empty}} on them.) Making links case-insensitive is a per-project decision, I think, and Wikipedia is case-sensitive on all but the first letter (to distinguish between acronyms and words, I think). How would I rewrite this?[edit]

New instructors will assume the posts for Defence Against the Dark Arts (replacing Severus Snape), and possibly Transfiguration in the event Minerva McGonagall becomes Headmistress. There may also be new Heads of Gryffindor House and Slytherin House. Horace Slughorn is the most likely candidate for head of Slytherin House. If Minerva McGonagall becomes headmistress a new deputy headmaster or deputy headmistress will have to be appointed.

He's talking about Harry Potter, the as-yet-unpublished seventh book. And s/he's not correct. It is Snape who's being replaced in DADA, and Umbridge's first name is Dolores. Sounds like Fan Fiction. But I've heard something JKRowling said that leads me to believe the school may not even open for year 7. Or at least it won't be the same. I think this whole section should be deleted actually. If this has been copied from an existing article, I'd ask at that article's talkpage, as you are more likely to get a response from other editors involved with that article.

Question about editing blocks[edit]

If I register an account at my house (which is fine), and log into it at my school (which has a shared IP among 1500 students and is usually blocked from editing for vandalism), what will happen? If the IP address is shared by all users at the school, you may be autoblocked depending on the type of block the administrator put on the account. If the technical information shows that the account is a school account, then the administrator should probably use a soft block, meaning you'll be OK. But there can be other problems, like another user logging in and getting blocked, though that's rarer.
