August 14[edit]

Editing M F K Fisher[edit]

I am still having trouble creating section headings. My latest failure is an attempt to create the new section: California: 1932 - 1938. What am I doing wrong this time? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Henryheater (talkcontribs) 00:01, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your mistake was that you put other content on the same line. Put the section header on a line by itself. —teb728 t c 00:11, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edit jumping[edit]

Normally, if I edit a topic on a forum, when I click on Save page, I see the area I just edited. However, sometimes, for example now at WP:BLPN, when I save, it jumps to a completely different part of the page. Why? It's very annoying. I vaguely recollect that someone may have explained this once some time ago, but if my vague memory is correct, it unfortunately doesn't extend to remembering the explanation. :-) --Bbb23 (talk) 00:22, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This happens to me when I edit a section where the same section title (or anchor) appears earlier on the same page; after save it jumps the first appearance of the name. (This happened on the section immediately above.) —teb728 t c 00:35, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This can happen if an earlier part of the page is expanding or collapsing after your browser tries to position you. If you afterwards (when the page has settled) click in the browser address bar and press Enter then you will probably be positioned correctly. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:43, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the comments. For some reason, it never ocurred to me it was a browser issue. I blamed Wikipedia's code. :-) I'll try to watch it from now on and see if I can figure out what's going on.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:48, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I think the way Wikipedia serves a page may be partly to blame for the browser getting disoriented but I don't know the technical details. You may get the same effect from any section link coming from another page, for example a page history, contributions page or here: Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard#Verifiability not truth. You may even see the browser position correctly first, and then "move" when something earlier on the page is collapsed. I put "move" in quotes because it's possible the browser stays the same distance from the top of the page, and it's the page content that moves around while the browser technically stands still. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:07, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Now I'm feeling disoriented.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:20, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bahá'í Faith[edit]

Hi. I saw some problem in the neutrality of Bahá'í Faith paper. Would you know any Admin who can handle this subject? There are some POV Bahai pusher who do not let anybody ask for neutrality in this subject.P. Pajouhesh (talk) 08:35, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your best bet would be to discuss this at Talk:Bahá'í Faith, explaining what you think needs to be reworded or rewritten, and why - preferably with reliable sources which verify your version. Consensus needs to be reached. However, if one editor is edit warring then that can be reported at the relevant admin noticeboard -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 08:40, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I did it but I need some observer Admins because the discussion become something like personally attack. I came to ask for some Admins that had knowledge about this subject and can handle it.P. Pajouhesh (talk) 09:01, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
With respect, looking at the talk page, there is not a consensus for your point of view from what I can see. Other editors are saying that you have misunderstood the POV tag and asked you to provide reliable sourced for your assertions. It appears to me that the discussion is a good one - could you give an example of a personal attack, as I didn't notice it when I quickly read the discussion. In my opinion, there does not appear to be a need for admin intervention - if I am wrong, then please give an example of what someone has done that would require them to be warned or blocked? Admins are not super-editors - we are first and foremost editors. Without further evidence of "wrong doing" (preferably with diffs), I do not see any need of admin intervention. However, if I am wrong, you need to take it to the relevant admin noticeboard here, not this page. -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 11:25, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Entry for Montauk, New York Has a Link that Releases a Virus[edit]

There us a link at the bottom of the Wkipedia page for Montauk, New York, under References, that releases a virus onto your computer:

^ "Montauk Look". New York Post. July 3, 2011. Retrieved 2011-07-07.

When you follow the link to the New York Post page, a fake Wal-Mart survey appears on your computer and you cannot get rid of it. Please remove this link! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.67.114.30 (talk) 12:43, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removed, thank you for informing us about this issue.  JoeGazz  ♂  12:53, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Another person by that name[edit]

I came across the British sculptor David Goode, about whom I'd like to start an article. However, I found two articles about an organist by the same name and another David Goode with a closely related name. Being a frequent user of Dutch Wikipedia, but not of this version, I thought I'd check: Can I change the title of David Goode into a disambiguation, in which David Goode (organist), David Goode (sculpturer) and David R. Goode (former CEO of etc.) are to be listed? Thanks! Erik1980 (talk) 14:12, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There doesn't appear to be a WP:PRIMARYTOPIC so yes, you can make a disambiguation page at David Goode. First move the existing article, modify links at Special:WhatLinksHere/David Goode, and then change the redirect from the move into a disambiguation page. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:31, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You can also add a See also link to David Good per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages)#"See also" section. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:35, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Westlawn cemetery canton ohio[edit]

I wanted to find more information on westlawn cemetery located in canton ohio. Like the oldest grave and any other information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.179.25.203 (talk) 15:25, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If there is a notable topic about which you believe there should be an article in this encyclopedia, Be Bold! and do it yourself! If you need help creating this article, please see Help:Editing and Wikipedia:Your First Article. Happy editing, hajatvrc with WikiLove @ 15:37, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Websites such as Find A Grave may be useful for your purposes. The entry on your particular cemetery is well-rounded, although it may be difficult to ascertain some information (such as the oldest gravesite) without contacting the cemetery itself. Xenon54 (talk) 15:50, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright[edit]

Under share-alike licenses, if only some quotes were made from text released under the license, does the whole derived product fall under that condition of release? In a similar vein, if a news article uses some SA photos, must the whole article be released under SA licenses? -- Mentifisto 15:57, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You might want to ask this at WP:CQ where the copyright fans hang on! However regarding your second question, only the images would be covered unless the text was explicitly released under the same license -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 16:19, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If a portion of a document is e.g. CC-BY-SA, and another portion of the document is e.g. "(C) all rights reserved", then the document as a whole cannot be copied freely. However, the 'cc-by-sa' portion remains free to be used under the conditions of said licence.
A copyright-book (not CC) can contain public-domain, or CC pictures - and still be copyrighted (non-CC), and cannot be copied it its entirety; however, the pictures it contains which are PD or CC are free for use under those licences.  Chzz  ►  01:41, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unable to determine copyright informatioin on my photograph.[edit]

I have a photograph, showing my late uncle Dr. Paul V. Yoder conducting a Japanese orchestra, that I would like to submit to be included on his page. This photo has been in my family for years. I am unable to determine copyright information on the photo since most of the writing at the bottom of the picture is in Japanese. How do I upload it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ldanver (talkcontribs) 16:49, 14 August 2011

File:X:\Data\Temp\Japanese Text.jpg|The Japanese text located at the bottom of the photograph

We cannot see that file. We do need to know the copyright status. Could you, possibly, crop out just the text, and upload that? (It should be OK, copyright-wise, just being text) - and then someone can translate it, and see what it says.  Chzz  ►  16:54, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Further to that answer: is this an original photo with writing added to it, or a clipping from a book/newspaper? If the former, are you (your family) the owner of the photo - if so, you possibly own the copyright (although it might be the photographer/studio if it was taken by a non-family member); if it is a clipping from a book or newspaper, the publisher/newspaper would probably be the copyright owner. Without more information, it is hard to give precise answers - and when you have that information, better place to ask might be Media copyright questions where the copyright fans hang out! -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 17:20, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
