Help with template coding[edit]

Resolved
 – Works now the way I want it. Thanks. --Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 09:16, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I want to make a notification template for user talk pages. The template should produce the following:

==Notification regarding a file you added to an article== File:???? which you added to Example with this edit was removed from that article because it does not have a valid non-free media use rationale for the article. Please see Wikipedia:Non-free content for the applicable policy and Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline if you want to address the issues. Thank you. ~~~~

I want to have it such that I can specify the file URL, a wikilink to the article in question and a link to a diff using slim pasteable code such as . However I am not that good at coding templates. Can someone help me with that or point me to a place where I can read about how to go about this? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 22:59, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See for example User talk:MusicGeek101#Notification regarding a file you added to an article for an example of what it should look like. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 23:03, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See below:

Regarding :{}
I have removed :{} which you added to :{} with [{} this edit], because it does not have a valid non-free media use rationale for the article. Please see Wikipedia:Non-free content for the applicable policy and Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline if you want to address the issues. Thank you.

The parameters for this would be You imply you want automatic signing but its very uncommon and because of that, usually not included because most people end up signing twice when you do include it. If you really want it, you could add to the end, {~~<includeonly></includeonly>~~}.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:20, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We already have Uw-nonfree:
Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload new images. However, it appears that one or more of the images you have recently uploaded or added to an article may fail our non-free image policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading or using a copyrighted image of a living person. For other possible reasons, please read up on our Non-free image criteria. Please note that we take very seriously our criteria on non-free image uploads and users who repeatedly upload or misuse non-free images may be blocked from editing. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 01:02, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It works now. Thanks very much. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 09:16, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for relatives in Germany[edit]

Please click on the following blue text. It is a link to the place where I have moved your question—a more proper forum for it: Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities#Looking for relatives in Germany.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:38, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection and ANI[edit]

Quartzsite, Arizona (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Several IPs have been vandalizing the article and soliciting more vandalization. I've requested semi-protection, but that can be a bit slow. In the meantime, I and other editors keep reverting the changes. Would it make sense to go to WP:ANI in the hope of quicker admin action, or do I just need to be more patient (it's kind of frustrating)?--Bbb23 (talk) 01:24, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

An admin protected the page, but if anyone wants to answer my question for the future, that would be nice.--Bbb23 (talk) 02:56, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The first place to try is WP:RFPP. If that isn't getting picked up fast enough, try the IRC channel. Sometimes you can get a faster response from ANI, if you don't mind being told "Next time, take it to WP:RFPP" every time you ask for help at ANI. --Jayron32 03:03, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
LOL. Thanks much. I'll have to figure out how to use the IRC channel.--Bbb23 (talk) 03:06, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox issue[edit]

Alright, Ive used test.wikipedia.org to sort out my userboxes, and I tried to recreate in my sandbox. Heres my Test Wiki userpage (which I have where I want it) My sandbox recreation (different results) . I have the same coding on the templates too! My Test Wiki userbox template. My sandbox duplicate of my Test Wiki userbox page. mysterytrey (talk) 03:44, August 27th, 2011 (UTC)

Can you clarify exactly what your question is? So far I just see a lot of links. Ryan Vesey Review me! 04:20, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You have reproduced everywhere one simple error: <div style="float :right;"> instead of <div style="float: right;"> (emphasis added). I have fixed it at User:Mysterytrey/sandbox/trial/trial and error 2.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:21, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ryan, after the first link, they point out that that is the way things should be laid out. None of the following links have that same layout. Yes, it's not in question form and they could have been more clear but that is, as far as I can tell, what they were getting at. Dismas|(talk) 04:59, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Fuhghettaboutit for correcting my error. I guess I should of been more clear in the question, but I was baffled and I really wasnt thinking of proper sentencing. mysterytrey (talk) 05:11, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 07:54, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ownership question[edit]

I understand that just because you write an essay, you don't own it; however, are other editors allowed to change the point of the essay I created? Ryan Vesey Review me! 04:29, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

 • Its more a matter of collegiality than rules, I'd say. Try to work it out first, but if an essay is meant to espouse a certain point of view, it shouldn't be eaten away by those who don't share the same point of view.--Milowenttalkblp-r 04:35, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Is the essay in the user namespace or the Wikipedia namespace?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 07:53, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia namespace. Ryan Vesey Review me! 12:05, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If the essay is in publicspace, it is available for any editor to edit. If the "point" of the essay is changed, then make a new one!Curb Chain (talk) 22:30, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Is this the essay in question?: Wikipedia:All high schools can be notable. If you don't want edits to this essay, I suggest you move it back to your userspace.Curb Chain (talk) 22:34, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think that is terrible logic. "If someone wants to change the point of an essay, the person who created the essay should create a new one". In reality it should be, an essay is created with a purpose. That purpose should be maintained. If someone wants the essay to have a different purpose, they should create a new essay. References Do Not Show Up On List of hard rock musicians; It Shows Up As Template:Reflist[edit]

Refs don't show up on List of hard rock musicians.Curb Chain (talk) 07:54, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at reflist's documentation and I don't see a limit to the number of citations it can handle but maybe it's because the article has too many with 863? I removed about 300 references from the front end and previewed it, then repeated removing from the back end covering a different set of citations and both times it previewed fine with about 500 citations left in, leading me to believe that it's not an error in the code but in the number. By the way, I think that is an indiscriminate list that serves little purpose and is essentially redundant to a category. I shudder to think of all the work involved in what I see as a misplaced effort.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 08:49, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is no limit, as the references are generated by the Cite software extension. Reflist simply inserts and formats the reference list.
If you use your browser to look at the HTML source of the page in question, and search for newpp you will find:

NewPP limit report
Preprocessor node count: 565088/1000000
Post-expand include size: 2048000/2048000 bytes
Template argument size: 1135133/2048000 bytes
Expensive parser function count: 24/500

The Post-expand include size indicates the memory used by templates— it is currently at maximum. Once you go past this limit, templates will no longer expand. This list has a high use of flagicon and cite templates. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 09:41, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. So it could basically be "fixed" (if indeed it should be) by faking a few hundred flagicon templates with image code such as .--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 09:58, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. You could subst templates, eliminate templates or split the article. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 10:03, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am unable to edit the article - it is "crazy big" and I keep getting errors whenever I save. But wouldn't the best option be to just remove the flag icons? I don't see anything in MOS:FLAG that supports their use there. Яehevkor 10:04, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would say it has a fair amount of WP:OR as well. Eric Clapton, a hard rock musician? Not exactly the first label I'd put on him. Same goes for Pink Floyd. Meanwhile, bands like Guns 'n' Roses has three or more references when there wouldn't be much argument there. Dismas|(talk) 10:07, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Using <references /> instead of the template should force references to appear. — This, that, and the other (talk) 10:16, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Done that, but eventually it stops expanding the references themselves, just showing "Template:Cite web". Яehevkor 10:19, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article is just too large with too many templates that the only way I can see to fix this would be splitting the article. Even removing the flag icons there are still hundreds of unsourced entries which I presume will eventually be sourced, thus adding to the problem. Яehevkor 10:32, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Did some quick tests:
---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 10:39, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is turning into a problem article. I'm not the only person to have problems editing this article. I can't even look at the diffs because the of the huge size of the article. There are refs problems, missed placed refs, and the flagicons are contributing to the size crashing and should not be in article per WP:FLAGICON.Curb Chain (talk) 22:50, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Log out and try it— the page is cached from the squid server and will usually open for editing. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 22:53, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am having no luck as i always get errors when i save. When i look at diffs, i get errors as well. I suggest removing the flags because that is not necessary, and that currently is my intention of editing the article.Curb Chain (talk) 01:21, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Let me be one more to pile on here and strongly recommend that you remove all flags from the article. Per WP:MOSFLAG, this is gratuitous use and not supported by general practice. Double this with the fact that those large number of flag templates are breaking the page, and you have your fix. --Jayron32 01:38, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've split the list into two and removed all the flag icons. The second half still produces an error on my end when trying to save even though the edit does actually go through. There are a few cite errors, most on the second half and likely caused by the full ref being in the first half of the article. If someone else wants to clean those up, great! I have other things to attend to right now. Dismas|(talk) 05:49, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to save my edit on the 0-N list and it won't register and errors. It is possibly to big.Curb Chain (talk) 07:19, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Linking text to another page on wikipedia[edit]

I would like to link an article to the Truth (British periodical) page, but I only succeed in linking to the main Truth page. How can I aim the link at a specific page when they have the same title? I've tried to follow your help guides, but have failed dismally. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nottinghamian (talkcontribs) 11:35, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Truth will go to the "main page" Truth - Truth (British periodical) will go to the page you want and will be displayed as Truth (British periodical). You can also use a piped link to modify the way the link will be displayed - Truth will link to the article about the periodical but will be displayed as Truth. Roger (talk) 11:43, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You would pipe the results. For your example it would look like this, Truth. That makes it look like this, Truth. The double single quotes italicizes the name. GB fan please review my editing 11:46, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You can also use Truth (British periodical) (note the pipe character before the closing brackets) to produce Truth. See Wikipedia:Pipe trick. Deor (talk) 12:06, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks everyone. That has done the trick Nottinghamian (talk) 12:40, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

References – style variation and consistency[edit]

Will somebody please have a look at the references number 1 to 81 in the article Steinway & Sons. I am trying to write all the references the same way in the article Steinway & Sons. According to Style variation and consistency the references within each Wikipedia article should follow a consistent style. Therefore I am trying to make a consistent style in the article Steinway & Sons. So far I have changed the style for the reference number 1–81 to the same style be writing these references with the templates Template:Cite book, Template:Cite journal and Template:Cite web. It takes a lot of time, so before I make further edits I would like to hear if the references number 1–81 are written as Style variation and consistency would like them to be written. --Peoplefromarizona (talk) 16:37, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the majority use Citation Style 1 (book, journal, web, etc.) so you can certainly update the ones not using a template. User:PleaseStand/References segregator will slpit the references so you can edit them en bloc. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 17:12, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinates on the left?[edit]

Hi, Could you lease help the coordinates for The Longford Trust are appearing on the left of the article not the right why is this?

Kind regards, --Ratio:Scripta · [ Talk ] 19:09, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Navbox autohide?[edit]

Hello I have just created this Navbox template Template:Navbox The West Wing episodes. How do I make it appear as auto hidden on article pages as otherwise it takes up a lot of space as can bee see here Pilot (The West Wing) (scroll to bottom) where it is in use.

For example in this article Pilot (House) there is a Navbox (Template:Navbox House episodes) for House episodes which is auto-hidden allowing the reader to expand it. How do I achive this?

Kind regards, --Ratio:Scripta · [ Talk ] 23:58, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
