spelling[edit]

Do you have an Android phone? Try Google's voice search. Or sometimes your mobile device's autocorrect will help, or you could try to type the word in a Word document and run a spelling check for alternatives, or you could try to spell the word phonetically at Dictionary.com, or you could have tried to describe the word here, or... Also, just typing your best guess into Google usually works; because of the huge volume of searches it gets, it is in some aspects a better spellchecker than Word. ~HueSatLum 21:30, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you know other words that would likely be in the article (particularly combinations of words that would not be in other articles) you can put them in the search box and press "search" rather than "go". Two articles with same name[edit]

watchlist for a specific section?[edit]

A feature of watchlist for a specific section, would be useful for sub-articles on pages such as help desk, WP:ANI and WP:RS/N.

The reply was negative on 2010.

MediaWiki API: Orphan pages[edit]

Navbox on other pages[edit]

You just added a navbox to the band's article by using {{Navbox musical artist}}. If you want to make a navbox template that you can transclude in other articles, you have to do it in template space, by creating a page at Template:Old Crow Medicine Show. You can just paste the navbox code you've already added to the band's article to create that page, then add {{Old Crow Medicine Show}} to any article in which you want the navbox to appear (including the band's article). Question about my father[edit]

How do I change the title of an article about my Father? He is listed as John S. Hunt lll. He should be John S. Hunt ll. We use what we refer to as the subject's common name for article titling. It is likely that the article you refer to is named as such because that is how the subject is known ("S" rather than "Smoker"). As far as adjusting the generation identifier, if you could provide us with a suitable, reliable source that proves he is the second rather than the third, we can change it.  drewmunn  talk  16:46, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody (an IP address) has changed III to II in the text of the article today. After some effort, I have found a reference which lists "John Hunt II" (the Boissier Press-Tribune reference) and on the strength of that, I have moved the article. I observe that many of the references given in the article are inadmissible, being searches of unpublished data such as death records. Several of the references are to newspaper articles from the 60's, and these may be solid enough to establish notability. I also observe that the article is an orphan (even Minden, Louisiana doesn't link to it, and nor does Huey Long). --ColinFine (talk) 17:59, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User pages and Google[edit]

Dear editors: I have been doing some Google searches while reviewing articles in Wikiproject Articles for creation, checking to make sure that submissions are not copied from web pages. Sometimes I find that a mirror site has picked up the submission from Wikipedia talk: or User: However, lately, it seems that Google has been picking up some user pages directly; for example, a search for this text: "Based on client feedback, he concentrated" resulted in this result: [1] . I thought that user pages were all marked as "Noindex". Am I mistaken about that? By the way, Afc has been receiving a new submission about every five minutes all week, so if there are more requests than usual for help from new editors at this forum, that may be why. —Anne Delong (talk) 18:26, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Articles created in main-space despite being rejected at Articles for creation[edit]

Is there any sanction/control when an article which has been rejected at Articles for creation, is pasted directly into main-space, without any attempt to address the reason(s) for rejection at Articles for creation?

The only "sanction" is that such articles are immediately subject to new page patrol, and may well be promptly deleted. Contributors are warned of this. AFC is designed to help contributors write good articles, or at least ones good enough not to be deleted at an AfD. No one needs to use it, anyone can register an account and add an article directly. AFC Is not a "guardian of the gates". The goal of AfC is to make it easier for contributors to learn how to write acceptable articles. If a contributor chooses to reject that help, so be it. An article rejected at AfC will quite probably be deleted if not improved in a way which would have caused AfC to accept it, but you never know. If others made edits while a draft was on AfC, then a copy&paste move may at least technically violate attribution, and a history merge should be done, just as with any C&P move. If there was only one contributor of content (not counting reviewer's notes), and that person pastes to mainspace, that issue is unimportant in my view. DES (talk) 20:10, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This happens a lot. My response is to decline their AfC submission as created if it's been submitted, and treat the newly created page under NPP standards - and I'm a pretty harsh new page patroller, honestly. I've also noticed it happens more with lackluster submissions than anything else. A copy-paste fragment left in Afc, if submitted, should be decline as "Exists in mainspace". Then we wait a while. If the mainspace article is deleted by the NPP, the editor may very well come back and start working on it again. If, after a while, it appears that the mainspace article is surviving, then the history of the draft is examined. If there's a lot of history, with either multiple authors or over a substantial length of time, then a history merge should be performed to reconnect the two parts. If the draft is just a few diffs by one author, then it can be deleted as a G6 (Housekeeping), since all of the useful material is in the mainspace article and the history is too trivial to bother merging. —Anne Delong (talk) 21:12, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How can I edit my user name? The software automatically capitalized the first letter "J" and I don't want that.

(e/c) In the most technical sense (which I'm not sure is the heart of your question), you cannot. The software will not allow a title, including an account name, to be created with a lowercase first letter. However, there are two things you can do. First, you can make your user and usertalk pages appear as lowercase, by placing on them the template {{lowercase title}}. Second, in non-article discussion pages such as this one, you should sign your posts by typing four tiles (~~~~) after your post (you forgot to here), which will automatically turn into your signature, with a time stamp, when you save. You can place the tildes without typing them out by clicking on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window. You can customize your signature so that it will display as lowercase. To do this: go to Special:Preferences; scroll down to "Signature"; make sure the box next to "Treat the above as wiki markup" is ticked, and paste into the field above it:

[[User:Jesselashcraft|jesselashcraft]] ([[User talk:Jesselashcraft|talk]]).

Format for initials[edit]

If a biography identifies a subject using two (or more) initials, should there be a space between the period and the next initial?
