September 10[edit]

a patroller[edit]

Surely the patrollers can see when a new page is being edited? As a new user, I saved a new page a small amount of info as I added it, as I was learning how to add it. Only to have the page "cited for speedy deletion" after I added every other bit of info that would've proven it's relevance. The guy doesn't seem to give us newbies a chance to put together a proper page. All my additional info has been deleted and only an opening summary lies there now. What a waste of my time! This has completely ruined the new user experience for me. Considering Wikipedia occasionally petitions for fundraising because the page is run by volunteers etc, I now have zero inclination to donate if it's going to go towards that dismissive person who deleted my info :( — Preceding unsigned comment added by Funhouse99 (talkcontribs) 02:49, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to Esjay Jones? Looking at the history, I don't see that anything got deleted. I recommend you follow WP:YFA to create your first article. RudolfRed (talk) 02:59, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Funhouse99: I also must recommend reading WP:YFA and using the article wizard for your first few articles. Not because there's any problems, but because they are more welcoming than a CSD template like you saw. Also, just a trivial piece of information, your donations go to funding technical things (mostly), such as servers, and people to keep them up. None of the editors of the English Wikipedia, be they new page patrollers, administrators, bureaucrats, or just editors gets paid any money at all from your donations. ~Charmlet -talk-
(edit conflict) I have provided a number of useful links for you on your user talk page. In particular you should read WP:Your first article. Rather than trying to generate an incomplete article in article space, you ought to develop your draft as a user subpage, which you could call User:Funhouse99/Esjay Jones, or through the article for creation process. This will allow your work to be reviewed when you think it meets Wikipedia's standards, rather than being deleted. Note that no content has yet been deleted from Esjay Jones, but it is quite likely that the whole article will be deleted because it contains no references to demonstrate the subject's notability. - David Biddulph (talk) 03:13, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In addition Funhouse99, you asked a specific question which wasn't answered, can a patroller see that an article is being edited. In short, no. If you happen to open the article for editing, the software doesn't literally open the article, it makes a copy and opens in an editing window, If you spent an hour working on it, no one else would know it was open. That's one of the reason that it is better to work in user space, as no one can tell that you might be working on it.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 12:51, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

David, thank you for converting the page. I've now "built" the page and can hopefully submit without deletion. I really appreciate everyone else's advice, links, etc as this process is quite tedious especially if one has no coding knowledge outside of Myspace... Hello, Sid053. According to your list of contributions, this post is your first edit. Did you work on this company's article under another username? I notice that you are typing your company name in all capital letters. This may be part of the problem, since this is against Wikipedia policy. I think, Anne, that you need to remember that deleted articles are not shown on the user's contribution record. You may have missed the fact that the OP had written Gannon dunkerley corporation limited, which was speedily deleted under the criteria A7 and G11. Is it a "Synthesis of published material that advances a position"?[edit]

I would like to have an advice, concerning my writing deletion: Why did you deleted the sentences referring to the Water Plan.

The deletion Diff page.

There is a claim, that my writing is forbidden because of Synthesis of published material that advances a position. However, as I understand it, my sentences complies with SYNTH is not mere juxtaposition.

These are my points:

  1. - The Arabs opposed the Israeli NWC (National water carrier) since it would be used to irrigate the Negev and enable more Israeli farmers there.
  2. - The Israeli NWC consumed water were within the Johnston plan allocation
  3. - Israel and Jordan adhered to those quotas. The Arab League technical committee accepted it as well, but the League rejected it later, because of political reasons
  4. - The increase in water-related Arab-Israeli hostility was a major factor leading to the June 1967 war.

Those points are supported but not necessarily by the same wp:rs.

Can I write those points together (as in The deletion Diff page or modify it) ? or is it offending the wp:synth ? Ykantor (talk) 05:48, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Points 1 through 3 are facts. There may be irrelevant/unnecessary/trivial (see WP:UNDUE), depending on what the Wikipedia article is about, but otherwise they are fine. Whether or not the same reliable source is used isn't that important (and, arguably, it's better, if only for readers interested in looking at sources directly, if there are different sources).
Point 4 is clearly conclusionary - "major factor leading to". If this is your personal conclusion, then that is a violation of WP:SYNTH. If there are authoritative sources (experts) who have concluded this, then those experts should be cited. If the point is disputed (for example, other experts don't think this was a major factor), then that too should be included.
Assuming that you can find sources/experts that argue about water issues helping cause the war, then, again, WP:UNDUE is relevant. If most experts don't think that water issues were a major cause of the war - either saying so directly, or listing other causes but omitting water issues - then giving this topic much space in the article is not acceptable. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 16:36, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

John Broughton and Charmlet thank you. My question might be unclear. The other editor does not oppose any of those 4 points (As I understand, which is rather difficult for me), since the points are well supported. He oppose mentioning of any relation between the Johnston water plan and between the war, since none of the RS mention such a relation.
  • My view is:
    • The increase in water-related Arab-Israeli hostility was a major factor leading to the June 1967 war. (which he accepts)
  • What is this water-related Arab-Israeli hostility?
    • The Arabs opposed the Israeli NWC (National water carrier) since it would be used to irrigate the Negev and enable more Israeli farmers there. (which he accepts)
  • What the Arabs has done in order to thwart Israel's National Water Carrier project?
    • Arab states resolved to reduce the operation of Israel's National Water Carrier by diverting the headwaters of the Jordan. (which he accepts)
  • What is wrong in the Arab diversion project?
    • Because it Deny's Israel water rights, according to the Johnston plan.
At this point, his attitude becomes rather complicated (for me). I would prefer that you would read his claims. The deletion Diff page
Anyway, he says:" As no source has placed the compliance of Israel's plan with the (failed) Johnston plan quotas in the context of the lead-up to the war, it has no place in that section."
my reply:
  • The This compliance is an integral part of the water related hostility , and this hostility was a major factor leading to the June 1967 war.

I have an MA in History, so I am great at adding references but, alas, I have zero qualifications in editing Wikipedia. Template on Talk page about an AFD links to the wrong one[edit]

Please take a look at the template on Talk:2016 Summer Paralympics it refers to an AFD which resulted in a Keep, but the "discussion" link goes to the wrong AFD. Currencies on Wikipedia[edit]

What is the policy for currencies on the English Wikipedia? I find it easier if US Dollars are used, as I know what its worth in many other currencies. But when a lot of articles have all kinds of currencies, its nearly impossible to quickly figure out what the numbers are, without using a converter or calculator to figure it out. An email is associated with your account but are you absolutely certain you are looking at the correct e-mail address; that you didn't use an alternative email address from your most commonly used when you signed up on February 8, 2010, or that you haven't changed emails since then?
