How Do I Upload A Photo That Won't Be Deleted[edit]

Hello, I am wanting to upload a profile photo to a wikipedia page. but the photo keeps getting deleted due to copyright issues. However the photo is public domain. Can someone please tell me "what type of photo I can use?" and "where does the photo have to appear online for me to use?" so that it won't be deleted. Is "Photo Bucket" or "Tumblr" or "Social Media" good places to pull photos from? Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks so much BrandonWalker2014 (talk) 01:23, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BrandonWalker2014. If the photo is public domain, but it keeps getting deleted, it may be that you aren't providing enough proof that the photo is public domain. For photos to be useable on Wikipedia, they have to be under a free license, either public domain or a license that permits reuse of the image for any purpose, including commercial purposes. The vast majority of images on Tumblr or photobucket are not usable on Wikipedia for this reason. Flickr does have an option to search for images under free licenses. The images you have been uploading so far have not been in the public domain. Publishing without a copyright notice doesn't release the image: all images are copyrighted by default. creating offline sandbox entries[edit]

HOW CAN I CREATE A SANDBOX ENTRY WITHOUT IT GOING ONLINE?

I don't think this is possible. Wikipedia pages, including sandboxes, are written in Wikipedia markup language, converted to html by a program running on Wikipedia's server, and that html is converted by the user's browser to what the user sees. I guess that there may be a way to install the whole Wikipedia engine on your computer, and use that copy to convert the contents of your local sandbox to html; but I don't think it would be easy. You can try, create a new sandbox, then wrap your new sandbox contents in nowiki tags when finished experimenting for the evening and then remove the nowiki tags to continue experimenting the next day, as the nowiki will remove the rendering it will not be normally searchable and will give you some degree of privacy while developing the page, if you require some further help drop me a note on my talk page. The easiest way to keep an article offline is to write it in a text editor such as notepad. You can view how the article will render in Wikimedia by pasting it into the edit window and using the preview button. As long as you do not click save it will never go online. Thus, it really does not matter what page you do that on, but it is safest to do it on a sandbox page just in case you accidentally click "save"! SpinningSpark 10:45, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This is what I do. Whenever I write something longer than a short article, I'll do it in Notepad, and when I want to see what it looks like, I'll preview it in a sandbox. This is how I wrote List of Indiana state historical markers and eighty-nine sublist pages, for example. If you create it in a userspace sandbox (in this case, User:Noongar Pedia/sandbox, for example), you can request deletion if you accidentally create the page; either The Original Filfi or I can give you details if you want them. Tech help please[edit]

I have approached this before and now may have a possible look-up solution for some of the issues, however no way to craft such look-up. The issue is, Is there a way to search for a article exceeding the boundary of a standard screen? The potential look-up solution for some of the aforementioned article is, Can we craft a search tool that can look for; A carriage return followed by a space, this search will sort and allow me or other users to fix a certain type of error. @The Original Filfi: Sorry, can I just clarify what you mean by "a article exceeding the boundary of a standard screen" [sic]. Articles should scale automatically, so unless someone includes a space at the beginning of a pharagraph, there should not be an issue. --Mdann52talk to me! 12:35, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(after ec) I think the user is referring to the fact that new lines that start with a space do not wrap, they just extend off the end of the screen. A space is used to identify lines that should be formatted as "code". @The Original Filfi: Depending on your skill, you may be able to do this with a regex search in AutoWikiBrowser, but it will involve a database dump. Alternatively, you can make a request for a bot at bot requests. You need to put some thought into how long a line you are looking for, not sure there is any such thing as a "standard screen" any more. Also, how are you going to identify lines that are deliberately formatted like this, such as code examples? SpinningSpark 13:34, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How do you convey uncertainty about how to define something[edit]

I have been working for two years on getting an entry for Distributed Autonomous Organization into Wikipedia. In that time, the acronym has changed twice and, over this period of time, it has become more and more uncertain (or, I guess, more dithered) as to exactly what we mean when we say something is or isn't a DAO/DAC/DApp. How do I convey this uncertainty? As far as I can see the first sentence says those things are synonymous, not different. Anyway, the first paragraph of the lede of an article should clearly define its scope (see MOS:BEGIN). That means all these variant terms might be mentioned as being included, but it is not necessarily required to define them in detail. That could be left to later in the article. Remember that the lede is meant to be a summary of the article; too much detail early on can be a mistake. I would also advise you to read Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Capital letters, there seems to be a lot of dubious capitalisation going on. SpinningSpark 17:53, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have inserted several corrections in the entries on George Mackinnon Wrong (my grand-father) and Hume Wrong (my uncle). I have also deleted an incorrect reference in both entries to an imasge in the Wellcome library which is mis-identified as being of the 6 Wrong siblings (there were only). Derek Walcott biographyt page -- error in creating reference[edit]

Hello Wikipedia editor,

I have made a mistake adding Anisfield-Wolf.org as a reference (number 10) The message says "the named reference was invoked but never defined."
