Changing a company name[edit]

Hi there,

Whalerock Industries (formerly BermanBraun) page has been updated but there doesn't seem to be a way to change the actual name of the page? Can you please help?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marywilli123 (talkcontribs) 00:02, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Marywilli123: Pages are renamed by moving them to new target names. This procedure preserves the page's edit history. Please do not rename a page by copying/pasting its content to a new page name. If you have an account that is at least four days old and have made more than 10 edits (autoconfirmed), you can move a page yourself, but please first review Wikipedia:Article titles. If you still wish to rename the page, go to it, click the drop-down menu at the top (near the History button and Watchlist star), and choose Move. You can then specify a new name for the article. The old page name will automatically become a redirect to the new page. However, if you think the move would be at all controversial you should request the move on the talk page using the Wikipedia:Requested moves process. Even where a move is uncontroversial, if the desired target page name already exists and is other than a redirect with only one edit, you will need an administrator to move the page for you, which can be requested at the technical requests section of requested moves. Hope this helps. LorChat 00:15, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Done It appears that the original poster followed the advice and has moved the article to Whalerock Industries. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:58, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Australian English[edit]

Resolved

There is an article that is written in Australian English that is repeatedly "corrected" by well-meaning editors. I know that I've seen similar articles that have a template in the edit window (typically {{British English}} and would like to add an {{Australian English}}) template to that article's edit window. How is that accomplished?  ~Thanks in advance, ~E, aka:71.20.250.51 (talk) 00:33, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It already has the {{Use Australian English}} template. This is added by editing the page and placing the template at the top of the page. Hack (talk) 00:43, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The IP would like an administrator to add an edit notice like this to the edit window (). Would anyone care to do this? RGloucester 01:00, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) Hi Person editing from IP 71.20.250.51. Hack is correct except that I added it in response to your post I did it for you since only users with certain higher permissions can create and edit editnotices in the article mainspace. Meanwhile, the documentation for the template could use some tweaking to explain how to do this, which I'll go add. By the way, if there's a particular place in the article where the change is often being made, you can add a commented out note at that point saying something like "<!-- Do not change this to "_____"; this is correct in the Australian English in which this article is written -->" See also {{Not a typo}}. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:02, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the documentation all of these templates share. Next time you should be able to follow the instructions to make your request on the talk page.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:28, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks y'all, for your prompt responses and edits!  ~Person editing from IP 71.20.250.51 (talk) 02:29, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Corrections were made - based on feedback for page "William F. Bernhard" - can the comment " this page needs help" at the top of the page can be deleted?

Lvadresearcher (talk) 01:37, 10 December 2014 (UTC) lvadresearcher[reply]

In my opinion, a bunch of references were added, but the article still needs links. Did you forget to add the URL to the references? Most of those references look like they're from websites but don't link anywhere.--A Wild Abigail Appears! Capture me. Moves. 06:05, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing errors on Krishna Palepu[edit]

Reference help requested. talk:Providence500 is engaging in removal of subjects activities that resulted in conviction and fine by Indian court under the guise of outside activities. This is a biographical page and hence all activities the subject engaged in should be appropriately reflected on the page. Thanks, Neil2000 (talk) 02:44, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Discuss on the article talk page, Talk:Krishna Palepu. The article is subject to the biographies of living persons policy, and there may be an issue about whether the negative information was properly sourced. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:08, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing errors on Satpal Singh[edit]

Reference help requested. Please improve the article Anil Mann (Old) Please improve this article Anil Mann (Old) an old Indian wrestler Thanks, Sheetalsoni (talk) 12:22, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you requesting help about Satpal Singh or about Anil Mann (Old)? The latter article is a mess, but it isn't clear what sort of help you want. Can you clarify? Robert McClenon (talk) 15:12, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't clear why you put (Old) in the title of the article. I have moved it to Anil Mann. However, because the article is a mess, it is likely to be nominated for deletion. What help do you want? Robert McClenon (talk) 15:21, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would like this page taken down please[edit]

I would like the following page to be taken down Mohammad Asghar.

As whoever is controlling it is biast, clearly racist as the articles written on it are linked to other people however their Wikipedia pages are clear.

After having tried making changes to the page whoever is controlling it, revert it back to the incorrect text, many of the articles that have been poseted (the papers etc) apologised for Mr Asghar for priniting the wrong information. These have been sent to Wikipedia directly however no changes have been made.

If this person actually was someone with a shred of integrity they would have published Mohammad Asghar's achievement in this case which had international coverage.

Therefore I would like this page to be removed and whoever is administering it to be struck off your records/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.32.233.186 (talk) 13:22, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is Wikipedia, the encyclopedia anyone can edit. You say that whoever is "controlling" the page is biased and racist. No one controls the page. Any requested changes to the article can be made on the talk page, Talk:Mohammad Asghar. I don't see any evidence of any recent edits to the article. I certainly don't see any of the evidence that you claim that you have tried to correct the article and that your edits have been reverted. There has been no discussion on the talk page. The article is subject to the biographies of living persons policy, and any incorrect or unsourced information will be removed. If discussion at the talk page fails, you can follow dispute resolution or can go to the biographies of living persons noticeboard, but I don't see any evidence that you have tried to correct the article anyway. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:00, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I don't see anything racist, though there is some content that could be controversial, which is certainly not unusual for a politician. Only technical edits have been made in the last year, such as spelling and link repair. Again, the article talk page is the proper venue. --  Gadget850 talk 15:31, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Would like to change my school's page name.[edit]

I have created an account in order to change the page name, ie; move the page of the old school's name, over the the new schools name. It looks like I need to have an autoconfirmed account to do this and not sure if it's just a matter of waiting four days but I would like to see if you can please help me change the page name over.

The URL is: Hebrew Academy of Morris County

and the current page name is 'Hebrew Academy of Morris County' it should be changed to 'Gottesman RTW Academy' - Thanks GottesmanRTW (talk) 15:31, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done I have done that for you. Theroadislong (talk) 15:35, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But please note, GottesmanRTW, than user names which suggest that they represent organisations are not permitted. If you intend to do any more editing in Wikipedia (which you are very welcome to do, as long as you avoid that article, or follow the conflict of interest guidelines if you do edit that article), please create another account with a name personal to you (which doesn't have to be your real name, but must not suggest you are editing for the school). --ColinFine (talk) 15:49, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Database locked - The Wikipedia database is temporarily in read-only mode.[edit]

I am trying to edit Small Business Health Options Program, but get a message that the Database is locked and that The Wikipedia database is temporarily in read-only mode. This is the first time in 7 years of editing (I think?) that this happened to me. Was I just lucky before , or is this something new at Wikipedia?

Thanks ion advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:14, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That's usually because of system maintenance or because of a server synchronisation glitch. It appears to be OK now.--ukexpat (talk) 16:20, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I saw the same message. I think that I have seen it once before. It says that it is usually due to system maintenance, and will resolve within a few minutes. I don't think that it is really due to system maintenance, but, User:Ukexpat says, typically a server glitch. It is a less unpleasant way of handling a glitch than just hanging or failing to respond, which is more common. Maybe the editors at Village pump (technical) can provide more information. Welcome Template Question[edit]

If there is another place that I should ask this question, please advise me. If one has Twinkle, one can create a talk page for a new account by adding a welcome template, and there are special templates for IP addresses that suggest creating an account. Until recently, there were two standard templates for IP addresses, in addition to ones for helpful edits and for unhelpful edits. The second standard template, as the Twinkle description noted, had a border and used clearer language. The second template, with a border and using clearer language, is no longer there. Why has it been removed? Can it be restored? Is there another forum where I should ask? Robert McClenon (talk) 16:30, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert McClenon: The two templates were merged after this discussion. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:36, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As a side note, the one that is left uses no border and (mainly?) the language of the bordered version. As a second side note, I'm rather annoyed with the fact that I can't think of a good way to notify interested parties to TfD's. Almost nobody has these things on their watchlists, and in cases like these it's disruptive not to no-include the discussion notification on all uses of the template we don't have any decent notification mechanism. If you, or anyone else, can find a good way around that, please offer those as suggestions. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 16:41, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rokelle[edit]

Hello!

Out of curiosity, would it be possible to have one of your editors write a page about a notable artist?

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lizlemelson (talkcontribs) 19:05, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Requested articles if you have references to published reliable sources published independent of the subject to verify that the artist is notable in wikipedia's terms (& see specfically WP:Notability (music)), but don't hold your breath if you go down that route. Better to read WP:Your first article and try WP:Articles for creation. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:15, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You can use the Article wizard to help write the article. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:22, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

When to use the "4im" warning templates?[edit]

Resolved

I noticed that the templates at Wikipedia:Template_messages/User_talk_namespace include a "4im" level which seems to be meant for use in severe cases where the disruptive user only gets one warning instead of the usual four. Are there any project pages with guidelines about when to use that warning level? GSMR (talk) 21:22, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding is, level-1 is for a first offense, level-2 is after the user has repeated the offense after a level-1 warning, etc. So you don't give a "4im" warning unless the user has already received and ignored a "3im". Maproom (talk) 21:30, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom may be slightly confused. 4 follows 3 if stepping up the levels. There is no 3im. 4im, as distinct from 4, is an immediate "only" warning. Try Wikipedia:WikiProject User warnings/Usage and layout#Multi-level templates for vandalism. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:35, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes there is. Wikipedia:WikiProject User warnings/Usage and layout#Levels. It's up to YOUR discretion really. I use L1 for people just playing around. L2 for people who have done 2 or more vandalism but haven't been warned yet. L3 for those previously warned but didn't heed it. L4 for the unrepentant. IM I reserve for the probably vandalism-only accounts or particularly vicious vandals, especially for BLPs.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 21:34, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify that, no, you do not need to do the warnings sequentially from level 1 to 4. Neither is it a necessity that a vandal be warned 4 times before reporting to WP:AIV.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 21:43, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I lost my Sandbox[edit]

So I was creating an article in my sandbox and tried to move it to the actual wikipedia site using the move drop down button. I first accidentally made it a Wikipedia: Page but then I moved it to being an article. That then prompted me to get rid of the Sandbox heading which i did. However, the page still didn't exist when i searched for it, so I tried to move it back to my sandbox with a User: designation. That didn't work and now I just don't know what to do. Every time I click on my sandbox I'm lead through a bunch of redirect links until I get to the final move I did with the page. I needed to get the page on wikipedia for a class so I ended up copying and pasting into a new article which did show up. However, the history of edits on the original page is not there and I don't think that is wikipedia policy so I have no idea how to fix this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:The_DragonCrown_War_Cycle This is where my sandbox page ended up. (I put the sandbox heading on it to see if that would help)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dragon_Crown_War_Cycle This is the page I created with the copy and paste. StartlingCanary2 (talk) 22:01, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay thanks, how do I contact an administrator? StartlingCanary2 (talk) 23:03, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Books[edit]

Hi, can you please tell me how to add a book to your book list? There is a very good book which is a bestseller in West Africa and South Africa, which I feel should be on your book list. I am surprised you have not included it, or do you include only books read in the U.S. or Europe? The title is: "A Train Ride To Zaria" and the Author is: Bankole Ososanwo. This book is non-fiction, Historical / Adventure. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.56.48.180 (talk) 22:12, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. "We" don't include it or not include it. Wikipedia is edited by thousands of people like you and me. You are free to add the information (I'm not sure which article you want to add it to). However, Wikipedia requires that things in articles be notable: it is not enough that the book exists, or even that it is a bestseller: we require that a reliable published source, unconnected with the book, its author, or its publisher, have written about it at length. If you can find a full-length review in a major newspaper, that would be enough - add the book to whatever list it is you are talking about, with a citation to the source. (See referencing for beginners for how to cite the source). --ColinFine (talk) 23:19, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We recognize that our criteria for inclusion sometimes fail to adequately account for topics from some areas of the world. But, they are still the best we have, and must be followed If you can help come up ways to make them more representative , please share them at the village pump. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 00:10, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Image file usage broken?[edit]

I'm looking at File:Starbucks_Coffee_Logo.svg, which currently claims "No pages on the English Wikipedia link to this file." However, it is used in Starbucks. Why is this? +mt 22:21, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how that happened; perhaps the servers got confused when the Starbucks page was blanked by a vandal. I have tried a null edit on the article and a purge on the file page, and one or both of those has fixed it. -- John of Reading (talk) 22:29, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll keep these tricks in mind with future situations. +mt 22:49, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 01:44, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
