June 4[edit]

Edit source for own talk page.[edit]

Hey all, after I had move-archived my talk page and then restored the original one from the redirect, I couldn't seem to be able to edit the source for each section individually. I could still do it to other talk pages though. Is there a cleanup job I missed after I changed the redirect back? (My first talk archive was a copy paste move). Thanks in advance,TheQ Editor (Talk) 01:51, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the {{talk archive}} banner from the top, and that has fixed it. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:46, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

adding photo to Sebastien Stella[edit]

I'm trying to add a photo to the page Sebastien Stella and have tried to follow instructions to add to infobox without success. I did successfully upload the photo to Wiki Common, category photos, name of photo Sebastien Stella, name of file equerre.jpg. If you could tell me exactly how to do this, or do it yourself, I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks. Lloyd Sachs

Sidbill60 (talk) 02:32, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done Though I don't see where you've tried lately to add an image. Anyway, you can see how I did it here. Hope that helps. Dismas|(talk) 02:42, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Sidbill60 (talk) 02:44, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

IP blocking question[edit]

I would like to know if it is possible for my account to be excempted from IP blocks anywhere, as I sometimes try to edit but a previous user may have disrupted Wikipedia and blocked the IP. This makes it frustrating for me to edit so is it possible for my account to be excempted? Warrenkychu (talk) 07:43, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this is possible. See Wikipedia:IP block exemption, and especially the "How to request" section. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:05, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

CREATING NEW WIKI PAGE[edit]

I am creating a new wiki page but I am struggling to understand how citations work…

I am nearly ready to submit a draft of the page for review but I am wondering if I need to cite things before or after this?

Frank — Preceding unsigned comment added by FRANK RIGBY 7744 (talkcontribs) 09:32, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

See Referencing for beginners and definitely cite before you submit it for review - otherwise it will simply be declined for not having any references - a waste of your and reviewers time. You should only submit for review when you believe your draft is as complete as you can make it. That will reduce the number of times it would need go through the review cycle which can take more than a month each time! BTW, please do not write in all-caps, section headings use sentence case. tomasz rut[edit]

check birth date of tomasz rut. you have 61 his site has 68 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.154.235.102 (talk) 11:38, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out; fixed with this edit [1] after checking the reference supporting his birth year. CaptRik (talk) 12:06, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Side box[edit]

Can someone help to turn this into neat little side-box? Aditya(talkcontribs) 14:55, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean a vertical image stack, per {{imagestack}} or incorporating them into an infobox?--ukexpat (talk) 15:37, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
{{Imagestack}} is making it neither little nor neat. Very cumbersome. Is there any other solution? Incorporated in an infobox sounds good. Aditya(talkcontribs) 18:41, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As it appears above, the final a of Nymphaea has become detached from the rest of the word. This should be fixed somehow. Maproom (talk) 20:56, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please help with viewing Wikipedia on my Laptop[edit]

Resolved
 – --ukexpat (talk) 12:10, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I have been enjoying Wikipedia very much for many years and have never had any trouble until now. I am asking for your help from my PC because Wikipedia now appears on my laptop with a typesize so miniature that I cannot read it, even with a magnifying glass! The whole page appears, just with teeny tiny type.

I mush have inadvertently hit a button or feature that I didn't know existed when I last used in on my laptop. Please let me know how to return it to its normal size. Everything else on my laptop is fine, so I think I must just have mistakenly clicked something on the Wikipedia page.

I sure hope you can help me! With my thanks in advance,

Jennifer— Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.207.129.155 (talkcontribs)

Control+0 should reset the zoom back to normal.--ukexpat (talk) 15:40, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
FYI - rather than hitting a button, the common way to have done this is to have accidentally pressed control when you are scrolling down. Once you are used to it, control and scroll is a useful quick way to enlarge small text or images. - Arjayay (talk) 17:52, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ukexpat and Arjayay: You are lifesavers! I'm now up and running with Wikipedia on my laptop. Many, many thanks! Jennifer — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.207.129.155 (talk) 00:04, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome - glad we could help.--ukexpat (talk) 12:10, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of content[edit]

Let's say I wonder about a specific piece of content in an article. Is there an easy way (tool) to find out which authors touched that portion of text or even originally introduced it to the article? Of course I can manually click trough history. --Aeroid (talk) 15:44, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, click on "View History" then "Revision History Search" Should be self-explanatory, let me know if you still have questions.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:02, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Good to have it on the EN site, but the tool also works for DE, it's just not linked from the View History tab.--Aeroid (talk) 16:33, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mistake in the Seth Read (or Seth Reed) Wiki[edit]

I was reading about the first settler of Erie PA, Seth Reed and came across this:

"The family has been incestuously inbreeding in each generation since that of Seth and Hannah"

This should be deleted.

Thakn-you.

Ottawa Hospital Research Institute[edit]

Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I work for the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

I am trying to update our Wikipedia entry but the system is not letting me. It keeps deleting my entries.

Help?

It is not "the system" that is stopping you. You are being reverted by another editor. See the article history log for the reasons for this. Clicking on "history" in the link above or at the top of the article page. You should stop trying to make the edit and instead discuss the issues on the article talk page. is there a copyright? If not.. Can I use it?[edit]

i would like to use a picture from Memphis tn. and post it on my website but I'm worry about the copyright if there is any.. there are only a few right here and there is only one that I like. Thanks" Humblemegamind (talk) 20:34, 4 June 2014 (UTC)humblemegamind[reply]

If you click on the image, you will be taken to the image information page where you will see license under which the image's copyright owner has released the image, particularly whether attribution is required.--ukexpat (talk) 20:42, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, nowadays one is taken to the new image viewer when one clicks on an image. A further click on "view licence information" is required to get to the information page. Logged in users can alternatively click on the Commons or Wikipedia icon at bottom right. SpinningSpark 23:35, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am a Luddite, so I have disabled that. I keep forgetting it's now the default.--ukexpat (talk) 12:12, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Umulokpa is the Headquarters of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria[edit]

The Headquarters of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State of Nigeria is Umulokpa. Not Umulona or Umuluokpa as wikipeadia has at the moment. Please, correct the spelling. I will be happy to provide wikipaedia with more information on this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.160.118.162 (talk) 20:44, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The spellings in the Uzo Uwani article are supported by this official-looking page, which indeed may well be their source. But if you can provide reliable sources for the Umulokpa spelling, we can change the article. Maproom (talk) 21:15, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I find that Google Earth (which I do not regard as a reliable source) uses the spelling "Umulona". Maproom (talk) 22:22, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Applying Orphan Tag on Review[edit]

I was reviewing an article with a list of legendary people, and found that it had a link that was wrong, Bile, so to correct it I created an article Bile (Irish legend). I then fixed the link in the parent article. The article was then reviewed and was tagged as an orphan. It wasn't, because the link in the parent article had been provided. Is there a tool that reviewers use to determine that an article is an orphan? If so, could there have been a caching problem? To assume good faith, I am ready to assume that a tool was reporting the article as an orphan, rather than that the reviewer was guessing. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:19, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is a tool, and it has showed articles as orphans before when they weren't. - Purplewowies (talk) 23:30, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Delete my info[edit]

Kenny Hyslop (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Someone created a page for me which is innacurate the page is Kenny Hyslop born 1951 Helensburgh Scotland ...I would like my information deleted . — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.205.240.9 (talk) 23:40, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We base Wikipedia article content on what has been previously published in reliable sources. There are lots of sources that verify a 1951 date, so that has been fixed and sourced.
With regards to the existence of the article at all, we dont have pages deleted just because someone asks (or demands); however, the subject must meet some basic requirements, such as being the subject of non trivial coverage. Most of the coverage I have found in a quick search does seem to be simply trivial coverage. However, under some special qualifications under entertainers Hyslop might qualify for a page and even the trivial coverage would document an interesting career. If you would like to pursue the deletion of the page, the easiest way is probably to follow the process at WP:OTRS. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 01:53, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
