Is there a template for currency conversion to modern equivalent?[edit]

Is there a template that will convert USD from past amounts to also show current equivalent? -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:00, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

See {{Inflation}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:17, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! It has a warning that it should only be used for certain items. Would it be appropriate to use to convert an early twentieth century prize into current value? In 1908 she won a $10,000 prize (equivalent to $339,111 in 2023). -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:22, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It may be problematic. Is it equivalent in what you can buy for it, in what it means compared to a normal income, in what size of prizes may be available today for similar things, or what? "What you can buy" is probably the natural assumption. Rounding should be used to avoid false precision. |r=-4 gives: equivalent to $340,000 in 2023 PrimeHunter (talk) 01:48, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@UY4Xe8VM5VYxaQQ: They are supposed to display graphic symbols with faces or clothes. What you actually see will depend on your browser. In Firefox I see squares with hexadecimal numbers. Copy-paste the symbols to the "Characters" field at http://r12a.github.io/apps/conversion/ and click "View in UniView". Then you can see what each character is called and how it should look. I see only squares, including in the section heading, with IE9 and Vista.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 22:00, 30 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

Nusrat Faria Mazhar In this page the picture used is of good quality but so big that the face is not visible.

Someone could crop this picture, so that face is visible

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nusrat_Faria_Mazhar.jpg --The Avengers 12:48, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not necessarily arguing against changing the existing picture, but if you simply single-click on it, a larger version is displayed in which the singer's face is clearly seen. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 185.74.232.130 (talk) 14:48, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Done, not by cropping the original image, but by putting a cropped region of it in the infobox. Maproom (talk) 15:16, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Who is David Cole (aka primework123)?[edit]

Does the work (number theory or theory of prime numbers...) of David Cole (aka primework123) merit some recognition? He has formulated the Sum of Primes (SOP) Conjecture other stuff including the 'A Prime Model' on the properties of prime numbers and 'Theory of Something' on matter and energy and so forth...

Does he meet the basic requirements for a stand alone article? or the alternative criteria for an academic? -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 14:02, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A quick question about newspaper front page images. Yesterday evening someone replaced this image of the inaugural front page with this one of a more recent edition that attracted some social media interest, but I reverted it on the grounds I didn't think it was licensed properly for use here. The user who added it argues that it reflects the newspaper more accurately, and has since updated the license, and re-added it. I'm not an expert on image licensing policy so I wondered if someone else with a bit more experience in this field could check it out. This is currently a good article so should be kept in reasonable condition. Cheers This is Paul (talk) 13:59, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know of any guidelines but after taking a look at other articles about other magazines, it seems that there is a split between using a recent cover in the infobox and using the magazine's logo. In both cases in my admittedly non-scientific study, the cover image of the first issue was used further down in the History section of the article. This makes sense to me as a reader of the article may look at an article here, see the more recent cover, and think "Oh, I've seen that magazine" and have more recognition of the topic. Also, the first cover seems more apropos to have in a history section. Dismas|(talk) 14:23, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
ok thanks for taking a look. Just wanted to be sure it was usable. Adding the older one to the history section sounds like a good plan. This is Paul (talk) 14:31, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Paul Whether fair use on other grounds is sustained aside, that cover violates the fair use doctrine's minimal extent of use standard. The cover requires reduction to a low resolution image (and the text of the fair use rationale referring to it being high resolution is misplaced and needs changing).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 16:47, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, probably best to take it out then if the resolution is that good. I must confess I hadn't noticed the comment about resolution, and I wonder if it's been copied from their website. Also from what I can see of it the masthead doesn't look that much different to that on the first edition. This is Paul (talk) 17:07, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error included ref[edit]

correct tags please by removal of them — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.171.82.118 (talk) 16:10, 27 November 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]

You haven't told which article it is that you want corrected. Maybe it is Greta Garbo. I have corrected a red error message there, caused by defining the same named reference twice. I have also undone your deletion there of referenced text: Wikipedia relies on reliable independent published sources, rather than "the estate of garbo and her neice". Hussein[edit]

Hussein, Crown Prince of Jordan article doesnt have a clear picture of him, the one used in the infobox is barely identifiable. Searching the internet I found no uncopyrighted pictures of this person, but his personal website has a picture of him here. It might not be copyrighted, even if it was, would its upload for use as identification in his own article be seen as copyright violation? Considering the fact that there are zero alternatives...--Makeandtoss (talk) 18:08, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It is untrue to say that there are zero alternatives. Someone can take a photo of him and release it. Hence for living subjects non-free images are not accepted. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:16, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Currently zero alternatives*...--Makeandtoss (talk) 18:21, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The answers to your question are : any image is automatically copyright, so the image on his website most certainly is copyright (the copyright owner might have released it under a free use license, but that is highly unlikely, and in any case we only use those that are verifiably released under appropriate free use licensing ). And, no, utilizing a picture of someone an article about them in no way supersedes the need for an appropriate free use release. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:35, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Makeandtoss: You could try contacting the Jordanian government or royal family as described at WP:COPYREQ and asking them to upload a free-licensed portrait of the prince. —teb728 t c 00:39, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Expired BLPPROD[edit]

I tagged an article for proposed deletion as an unreferenced BLP on 17 November. I noticed it showing up on my watchlist today as having had minor edits made that don't add the required reference. Can an article that has been proposed for deletion or proposed for deletion as an unreferenced BLP be tagged for speedy deletion? With what criterion? Robert McClenon (talk) 20:27, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Also, is there a list that can be viewed by administrators of articles that have been tagged for more than seven days? Robert McClenon (talk) 20:27, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You don't need to tag it as an admin will come by sooner or later and deal with the expired prods. This Wikipedia:PRODSUM is all the prod in chronological order. -- GB fan 20:36, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for identifying the list. I see the article in question, and will wait until an admin works off the backlog. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:15, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

sources[edit]

You have an article about István Rusznyák 1889-1974,Hungarian scientist.Could you please let me know your sources for the article.

20:57, 27 November 2015 (UTC)92.25.74.117 (talk)

As the article about István Rusznyák clearly states, there is only one reference:- Schneider, William H. (2002). Rockefeller Philanthropy and Modern Biomedicine. Indiana University Press. p. 96. ISBN 0253109604.
Unfortunately, this page is not available in the on-line Google books version, which does not include pages 80-250 - but we assume good faith that the citations are correct. Clearly. only having one source is not ideal - if you have other sources, please add them to the article - Arjayay (talk) 21:09, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If you are interested in the topic, you could also ask other main editors of the article for further information. Click "View history" on the article page to see an overview about the article's history and a list of all editors. Main contributors might have additional information about the topic, or where the information was originally taken from. GermanJoe (talk) 00:54, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, I suspect the (one) reference is about his scientific contributions, and not his personal history, so I've added a BLP unsourced section tag to that. Rwessel (talk) 05:42, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
