Merged-from template[edit]

Dear editors: Last year I found a draft that was about the same topic as an existing page. I merged the content into the mainspace page, move the draft to an alternate title as a redirect, and added the appropriate "merged-to" and "merged-from" templates on the talk pages. Now the page has evolved quite a bit, some of the merged information has been removed, some rephrased. Is the "merged-to" template still needed on the talk page now that the exact phrasing of the text that was attributed is only in old revisions? It's been removed, and I don't want to restore it unless it's needed.—Anne Delong (talk) 00:52, 19 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anne. Talk page templates providing copyright attribution are belt and suspenders for the much more direct copyright attribution method, in conformity with our free licenses, of providing a hyperlink in the edit summaries upon the merge. So the question is, when you did the merge did you leave an edit summary at the merge-from source and merge-to destination, explaining what you were doing and wikilinking in the source page where you were merging to, and in the target, where the merged content came from? If so, then I see no real problem with removing the templates. If not, that can be fixed using dummy edits. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:14, 19 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Fuhghettaboutit, since I mostly work with material being merged into mainspace from old drafts, I use a summary such as "Redirecting to (link) after content was merged there". However, because the draft page will need to be moved into mainspace somewhere later, this would make a link in the edit summary on the page accepting the merged text useless. On the advice of Moonriddengirl, I use an alternate summary, listing the usernames of the editors who created the content. This satisfies the licensing (WP:TOU), so adding the merged-from template is informational rather than legal. It not only tells where to look for the old history, but has the date, which helps to find the right edit in the active page. This is useful, so in general, I would resist removing it. However, I was asking about a particular situation in which the text merged in has all been rewritten.—Anne Delong (talk) 07:20, 20 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hatnote or Disambiguation[edit]

I reviewed Draft:Stephanie Rose (painter). Before accepting it, I checked whether there already was a Stephanie Rose, because occasionally I see drafts that are disambiguated and do not need disambiguating. This time there already is a Stephanie Rose. Now that I accepted the artist, there are three. Here is the issue. I would like to be bold and decide that the primary entry should be a disambiguation page rather than the judge. Is there any reason why I shouldn't just go ahead and be bold and make the disambiguation page be primary, which involves renaming the current primary page to disambiguate it? I looked and didn't see any hard-and-fast policy or guideline about what to do in such a situation, and my thought is, when in doubt, disambiguate, especially if there are at least three articles. I think the relevant policies here would be WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and WP:TWODABS. Since Stephanie Rose is a redirect to Stephanie Marie Rose and there are more than two pages that would match the name, I think turning it to a disambiguation page would be fine. clpo13(talk) 00:58, 19 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Convert template[edit]

If I had the numbers 9.3 million sqft, 11.9 million sqft, and 3 million sqft, and wanted to display metric equivalents, I can use {{convert}} to get the following: 9,300,000 sq ft (860,000 m2), 11,900,000 sq ft (1,110,000 m2), 3,000,000 sq ft (280,000 m2). Is there a way to do this without having to display all the zeros, i.e. 9.3 million sqft followed by a metric equivalent? MB 06:42, 19 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

MB, like this: {{convert|9.3|sqft|m2|disp=preunit| million |abbr=on}} gives 9.3 million sq ft (0.86 million m2) You need the spaces in the "million" bit. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 08:26, 19 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Upload photograph help required[edit]

Good Afternoon,

I am the main editor for a new wikipedia page about a historic property in Rhode Island.

There are some photographs I am attempting to post to the page, however they are being denied, stating that they are either not identified as actually being mine or error messages.

Two of the images are from the library of congress, the rest are my organization's own photographs (very standard, small file JPEG images). As an archivist, I know that all material to be uploaded is public domain and there are no copyright issues.

You say that "all material to be uploaded is public domain". But you will need to provide evidence of that. I assume, from your statement that they are being denied, that you have not yet provided such evidence.
I see you have uploaded File:Plate 44 Early Homes of Rhode Island - Downing.jpg, claiming it as "own work". Did you really take that photograph yourself?
Anyway, this may all be moot. The article Samuel_Clarke_Farm curently cites no references, and is therefore a strong candidate for deletion. Yes, it lists some references, but it doesn't cite any of them. I recommend you to concentrate on fixing that as a priority, before you deal with the copyright status of the images. In the meantime, please place the existing refs where they are required within the text. Place them within ref tags <ref>{{reference content}}</ref> thus. Use one of the citation templates found at WP:CITET. If you need to use a reference more than once use <ref name="xxx">{{reference content}}</ref> at the first instance and then just <ref name="xxx"/> at subsequent uses... note the closing "/".
