Wikilinking years[edit]

Hi, is there any consensus formed on the practice of wikilinking years mentioned in articles? For example, is it proper for every year in every Wikipedia article to be wikilinked to the page on the year? Thanks, Icebob99 (talk) 00:43, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Generally not linked; see WP:OLINK and WP:DATELINK. Eagleash (talk) 01:01, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I also saw WP:LINKCRISIS. Good to know. Icebob99 (talk) 18:05, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How to resize images[edit]

I am working on User:HarryOtter/Userboxes/CubsWS16 but I cannot figure out how to resize the Cubs logo in the userbox to 42 by 42 pixels.

If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it.

@HarryOtter: I see that you've worked this out for yourself. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:14, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@John of Reading: I think someone from here came to help me. Thank you for following up and thank you to whomever did it. HarryOtter (talk) 16:31, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Gold mine in South Africa 1898-1907[edit]

Want find out the history of shaft sinker Arthur Ashton Allison. He sunk the Meyer & Charlton mining shaft in the Johannesburg area (around about End Street). He supported the mines strike in about 1904. Any info will be appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:A00E:3500:99D5:DBCE:4E87:325F (talk) 10:32, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This page is for questions about editing Wikipedia. Please consider asking this question at the Reference desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. You could always try searching Wikipedia for an article related to the topic you want to know more about. I hope this helps.

Referencing errors on Charles Fisher (producer)[edit]

Reference help requested. Hello I have a problem with a url error. Firstly, I'm not sure whether the error relates to an archiveurl or a url itself. Secondly, I don't know how to fix the error. Specifically the erro lies in: archiveurl = http://pandora.nla.gov.au/pan/40484/20040223-0000/aria_awards/main.htm | url = http://www.aria_awards/main.htm Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks, shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 11:11, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Shaidar cuebiyar: The problem lies in the domain name "www.aria_awards". There would normally be something like ".com.au" at the end of a domain name, and the citation code is checking for this. The Pandora archive seems to have recorded the original URL incorrectly. I'm not sure how you should fix the error message, though. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:34, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@John of Reading: What you say makes sense. I'll just add ".com.au" to the url, I'm after the information at the Pandora archive in any case. The current aria website uses "www.ariaawards.com.au/" but this does not display the page in the way that I want. Thanks for your prompt reply and useful advice.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 11:46, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How can I remove this TOC float left?[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Orschiro/sandbox — Preceding unsigned comment added by Orschiro (talkcontribs) 12:30, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Orschiro: Write __TOC__ to get a normal TOC. See more at WP:TOC. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:41, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Or remove the {{TOC left}} tag. Pppery 12:42, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Re-open a deletion discussion after issues addressed.[edit]

The article [Mesh (Band)] was deleted in September; at the time the majority of those in favour of the deletion cited the poor style of the article and the lack of references. Some also claimed the band was not well known enough.

I reworked the draft article to address these issues, and someone resubmitted it for review. A month later an administrator has deleted the article again without reference to the improvements made, or any explanation or further discussion. As I write, the band is number 1 in the German Alternative Charts. What can I do to at least re-open the deletion discussion? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Captain Sumo (talkcontribs) 13:34, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Captain Sumo: Please sign your posts by typing four tildes (~~~~) or clicking the signature button above the edit box which looks like this: , but do not sign in articles.. You should ask the deleting admin, JzG on their talk page. If you cannot resolve the dispute with them, you could take it to deletion review. Pppery 14:33, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It was a righteous WP:CSD#G4. The OP has virtually no editing experience, so the error is understandable. Guy (Help!) 21:27, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

webchat.freenode.net[edit]

What in the dickens is Help/clickthrough that links to webchat.freenode.net? It is asking me for my WP Username and Password.--Aspro (talk) 16:30, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel -- a chat room, if you will. You can go there and ask and answer questions, in live realtime, interacting with whomever else is logged in at the time. Herostratus (talk) 16:38, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify though, there should be nothing asking you for your WP username or password. The nickname you enter there is simply a nickname for using in the channel. Sam Walton (talk) 17:43, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error included ref[edit]

Insulative paint (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Trying to add a comment to this section but continue to get a notice that I must use <ref></ref>. I typed <ref>my comments and closed with</ref>, but still will not take. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jepritchett (talkcontribs) 20:41, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please provide a link to any page you have a query with. Please also sign your posts on talk-pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). References must come from independent reliable sources. Your 'comments' cannot qualify. Please see WP:REFB and WP:RS for more information. Much of what you have added appears to be original research and is not acceptable. The content will almost certainly quickly be deleted. Eagleash (talk) 20:50, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
