April 10[edit]

help with editing unwelcome content about me on Wikipedia[edit]

Someone has created a long entry about me on Wikipedia, eliminating the short formal entry I myself posted a year ago. I vehemently object to the way I am identified in this strange new entry, which damages my professional profile by citing inaccurate and doctored quotes attributed to me by journalist Robert Merritt in an article written over 35 years ago in a local newspaper. Merritt's poorly written article is not an appropriate source for a credible or accurate biographical entry on my life and work. My husband has tried to help me navigate the confusing editing procedures for Wikipedia, attempting to remove this entry and reinstate the accurate and formal original paragraph. After three tries, he was accused of vandalism, and barred from further access, and the offending entry remains. How may I remove this uninvited invasion of my privacy and my identity? Wikipedia, in preventing me from editing this entry, is harming my reputation and my ability to fight for the value of my creative work. I want to add here that my sole reason for posting on Wikipedia in the first place was to try to correct the wild errors in the Google ID panel when my name was entered in the search box. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_King_(artist)> E. Zeal (talk) 01:54, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Elizabeth: My recommendations, which may be supplemented by other volunteers (as we all are) on this site, or even superseded. Right now, do two things initially. 1) On your Talk page, declare your conflict of interest. Read the COI page for complete information. (If you choose, you may permanently abandon the "E. Zeal" account and re-register under your own name. However, be certain to use only one account to make comments about the article, or to make any approved edits to it.) 2) On the article Talk page, add a {{request edit}} notice, and make very specific requests about what content you oppose and what content you favor. Provide reliable sources for content you want to include. After every comment you make on a Talk page (but never on an Article page), sign your (user) name by typing four tildes ~~~~ in a row, so people can easily identify your contributions to a discussion. Neither you nor your spouse nor anyone connected to you should directly edit the article--at least, not without consensus in discussion with other editors. Such editing is not absolutely forbidden, but is very strongly discouraged, and can lead to being blocked from further editing.
I have done a cursory study of your biography, based on internet sources, and it is possible--but not certain--that you do not meet the Wikipedia threshold of notability, which is the requirement for an article to exist here. If so, your article would be deleted, and that would be the end of the matter. However, I also think you may be sufficiently, if marginally, "notable," which means the article about you will remain. Please understand, no one owns an article about him or herself on this website. Even if you wrote it, the article can be radically edited by other people, as per the Terms of Use of this website.
You should be familiar with Wikipedia policy on autobiographies, which are strongly discouraged. You might also read this article about the pitfalls of starting an article here about yourself. If your interaction with other editors on the article Talk page does not result in changes to your satisfaction, you can use this contact page to request further action by other volunteers who specialize in issues like yours. Adding Reliable sources[edit]

please help me to add reliable sources to page "Charanjeet Singh Sondhi" here is the source http://www.absoluteindianews.com/post-id-20240.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.247.1.28 (talk) 05:02, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sergio Garcia article[edit]

Just small correction. His father Victor is not working in Madrid, but in Boriol close to Castellon at Mediterraneo Golf — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.115.39.151 (talk) 05:41, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed, by removing reference to his workplace altogether. Herostratus (talk) 16:06, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) Hello, thanks for pointing this out. I have removed this minor detail from Sergio García, as I couldn't find a reliable source for the current situation (and ideally all information should be based on published sources). If you find such sources, you can edit most articles yourself - any improvements are welcome. GermanJoe (talk) 16:06, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have failed when adding a 3rd book in the "Further reading" section at the end of this page. Please fix and leave in little ref to "Lupton family" if this is what is done. I am sorry to trouble you. Thankyou. 101.182.60.171 (talk) 07:58, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Read the last two responses from when you did this. You don't need ref tags. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:50, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to get the 3rd book correct in the "further reading" section and got the "bullet" right - but nothing else. Please fix. 101.182.60.171 (talk) 10:15, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please take notice of what you have been told countless times. DON'T start a new section when you are continuing a conversation on an existing topic. Another editor has deleted the unnecessary section heading and you are lucky that he didn't delete the whole section. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:30, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
 FixedYou need to put a paramater 'name' in. I.e. not |example wording| but |quote=example wording|. Eagleash (talk) 10:35, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Artist and band pages[edit]

Hi there, I'm a DJ/producer and wondered how I can make myself a artist page on your platform like say Justin bieber. My work is on Spotify and ITunes under the name Christian Bannister.

Kind Regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:7A01:F600:74C1:D027:32C1:28B1 (talk) 11:18, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Christian. I'm afraid that, like many people, you misunderstand the purpose and nature of Wikipedia. We do not have "artist pages" We have encyclopaedia articles about notable subjects, including artists. "Notable" here is a bit of Wikipedia jargon, which means "has been the subject of substantial writing by people unconnected with the subject, and published in reliable sources". If you are notable in this way (see WP:GNG and WP:NMUSIC) then there can be an article about you. But it must be based almost completely on what people who have no connection with you (not you or your friends or associated) have published in reliable places (not social media or blogs). You will have no control over the content of the article, and you are strongly discouraged from writing it yourself: see WP:Autobiography. If after reading the links I have given above, you consider that you meet the criteria of notability, you wish to go ahead with an article (and understand that it will not be controlled by you and may not be used for promotion in any way), then I suggest you raise a request at WP:requested articles. --ColinFine (talk) 11:34, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How do I request an article get translated from English to Arabic?[edit]

How do I request an article get translated from English to Arabic? I found this article Ashtiname of Muhammad and thought it ought to have an Arabic page, because there may be many sources that could augment it from Arabic, since that's the original language of the document. Victor Grigas (talk) 13:48, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Victor Grigas! Probably you should ask at Arabic Wikipedia https://ar.wikipedia.org/ to translate from en-wiki – Wikipedias in different languages are separate (although closely related) projects, and the en-wiki community has nothing to do with ar-wiki contents. Possibly you can find some Arabic-speaking wikipedians here, anyway they would act as ar-wikipedians when (if) they publish a translation there.
OTOH if you want some Arabic-language sources to be used as references in en-wiki article: yes, it is possible. Especially if available sources in English do not cover some important aspects/part of article. In such case they can be added by ordinary means of citing sources (→Wikipedia:Citing sources), just add language=ar in the citation template (→Wikipedia:Citation templates). --CiaPan (talk) 14:14, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not an answer to the primary question, but with regard to using cs1|2 templates. At en.wiki, to cite Arabic-language sources when the title is written using an Arabic alphabet, the title should be placed in the |script-title= parameter like this (I took the words from the Arabic alphabet article): |script-title=ar:الأَبْجَدِيَّة العَرَبِيَّة. In cs1|2 this has the benefit of preventing unwanted italicization and isolates the right-to-left Arabic from the left-to-right English (or unidirectional numbers) in the citation rendering.
Trappist the monk (talk) 15:49, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
But if you are interested in translating it yourself, Victorgrigas, WP:Translate us has some advice. --ColinFine (talk) 15:35, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

City of Tolleson AZ Mayor[edit]

Good Morning,

Can you please update your information regarding the City of Tolleson Mayor? You site lists Mayor Adolfo Gamez as the Mayor. However, the new mayor is Mayor Anna Tovar. She is the first Latina Mayor in Tolleson.

Should you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Thank you,

Pilar Sinawi Intergovernmental and Public Affairs Manager City of Tolleson 9555 W. Van Buren St. Tolleson, AZ 85353 623-474-4986 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.87.239.202 (talk) 16:18, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • I see that you managed to make the change by yourself. I made a minor correction to change the date the reference was accessed since (I guess) the page was changed when the mayor changed.
I must also point you to Wikimedia Foundation's policy about paid editing (click the link), which you just broke - not a serious violation by any means, but please read the link before continuing to edit. TigraanClick here to contact me 18:10, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Avenger aircraft (moved from WT:HD)[edit]

Based on a visit to the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum and subsequent correspondence with the curator, I would like to add the following sentence at the end of the article on the Avenger aircraft. I admit being totally baffled by the "instructions" on how to edit, thus I am leaving the following sentence up to the mercy of whomever reads this to actually add it to the article.

A 1944 TBM Avenger is on display within the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas.

  • Hello Adonfelipe. Thank you for the suggestion. The next few lines are about how you made the suggestion in totally wrong form, but still, congratulations for making it and trying to comply with non-trivial instructions such as signing your post. I totally understand if you are not tech-savvy enough to fully profit from what follows.
You missed the big disclaimer above saying not to post here (Please do not ask questions about navigating Wikipedia on this page. This talk page is where the help desk itself is discussed. To reach the help desk, click here); also, you removed part of the question when fixing your signature.
Moreover, next time, you could use the "talk page" of the article to ask your question / give your suggestion to people directly involved with the article. To do so, click on the "talk" tab in the upper left (next to "project page", then on the "new section" tab in the upper right, write your thing, and hit "save changes". Adding references to a deleted Wikipedia page[edit]

Hello,

I have found out that the "Colin bates" Wikipedia page has been deleted because it only had one reference and that is not enough to have a biography of a living person. How do I add references to this deleted page? I can't find it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cbates817 (talkcontribs) 20:09, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The article Colin bates has not yet been deleted, Cbates817. It has been marked for speedy deletion as a blatant hoax, but there is still time to contest that nomination, by picking the button on the page. Colin Bates also exists, but is a redirect to Billy Elliot the Musical - where, however, that name does not occur, despite the claim on the page you created. If Colin Bates is indeed notable (in Wikipedia's sense) then it would be better to edit the redirect page rather than create a new (misnamed) article. If you are Colin Bates, Cbates817, then you should not be working on an article about yourself: autobiography is strongly discouraged in Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 21:21, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

creating page[edit]

how do i create a wikilinks page — Preceding unsigned comment added by Garrettblanchard (talkcontribs) 20:32, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, Garrettblanchard, I don't understand what you are asking. Wikilinks are internal links to pages in Wikipedia or other Mediawiki projects. If you want to create a new article, please see your first article. If you are asking about interlanguage links, please see WP:ILL. --ColinFine (talk) 21:23, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to reduce the height of thumbs?[edit]

Notice the connection near the bottom of the stack, marked by the arrow when it becomes visible.

Hello again. I'm working on an article and I am fortunate to have several videos to incorporate. However, I'm finding that I'd rather not have the thumbs as tall as they are on the page. Is there some wiki code that will let me shorten the height of the thumb, while still allowing the full sized file to appear when the "play" arrow is clicked? Thank you. JeanOhm (talk) 22:10, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello JeanOhm, I would suggest that you go through WP:THUMBSIZE. Come back if you need any further support. Thanks. Lourdes 02:08, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    • Lourdes Thank you for the reply, but looking at WP:THUMBSIZE and then Wikipedia:Extended image syntax only frustrated me! I've included the video image file in this section, so you can see what I want to do. When I use the "upright" notation at 0.50, it doesn't just shorten the image, it reduces both the image in height and width, and the space for the caption in width, as shown in the second image. What I would like to do is make the thumb about half as tall, while keeping the width the same as a normal thumb. I tried several variations of trying to specify height and width in px's, with no success. It may not even be possible to do what I am trying to do, but I'd appreciate it if you knew some code and could share it with me. Thank you again. JeanOhm (talk) 03:47, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
      • JeanOhm, can you please clarify: are you trying to crop the image/video thumb? Why I ask this is because when you reduce the thumb size, it is obvious that the thumb would reduce both in height and width to ensure that the image does not look stretched or pressed. Thanks. Lourdes 16:36, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
        • LourdesThank you for the reply. I wanted to reduce only the height of the image, which I thought would have been acomplished by the "upright" code. The "upright" code should really be called the "scale while maintaining proportions" code, IMHO, but it may come in handy sometime. In any case, I figured out a work-around. I captured a single frame of the video, used only the height that I needed to demonstrate the connection, saved that to the commons and then in the description wrote "from this movie" with a link to the movie. That is actually a better solution, beccause I could make the arrow much more obvious in the still image, to alert readers to where they should focus on the video. So, it's been a good learning experience with a good outcome. Thank you again. JeanOhm (talk) 18:11, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
