Deleted photo

Help: someone (who has no competence in the subject) deleted a photo that I posted on the 101 Ranch Oil Company.

It was a photo of a 1915 (eight years after 1923) celebration dinner at the 101 Ranch Oil Company. I downloaded as a family photo (my grandfather was one of the founders of the company) and noted that it is in the public domain.

But the idiot deleted it because it “obviously violated a copy right rule”.

I cannot understand how to retract this egregious error (since there is no access for such offered in the notice that accompanied the deletion notice), nor how I can demand that the idiot never be permitted to access Wikipedia again.

Also, the picture you uploaded was clearly scanned from a book, not the original photo. Copyright seems to be a recurring problem for you. Ian.thomson (talk) 01:42, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

• Copyright law is strange. The picture is still under copyright if it was first published in or after 1923, even if it was taken before 1923. If you can show that it was published in the United state prior to 1923, Then you can re-add it. Alternatively, If you can show that you own the copyright on the original photograph, you can release it under CC-BY-SA. -Arch dude (talk) 05:53, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there is a possibility that the book was the first publication of this photo, so the contributor needs to demonstrate a pre-1923 publication of the photo OR that the contributor (as is likely) is the owner of the original copyright by inheritance from the photographer. preview printable article (before printing)

Have not used Wikipedia for some time other than casual look-ups, please excuse lack of knowledge on changes since.

"Use" to be able to review the printable version of an article to, for example, decide how much of an article or what part of an article one wants to print. When I just clicked on the printable version of an article, it automatically goes to print; no review/preview possible. Seems of a potential waste of time, paper, ink etc if one does not need the whole article.

Any work-arounds? (sp?)

How to edit/re-do a page that has been deleted

Hi,

The page "Epigamia (brand)" was recently deleted by an administrator citing "Unambiguous advertising or promotion." We would like to resubmit this page with more neutral content and more sources if required. Is that possible? Could you help point me in the right direction for getting started?

• I'm sorry but you do not re-add this. Possibly someone else will, but not you. The first thing you must do is to abandon your username, as it is a corporate name. See WP:USERNAME. Pick a name for you as an individual instead. I assume that you are an employee of Drums Foods, and I see that Epigamia is a brand of Drums Food. Therefore, even as an individual, you must not create this article, because you have a conflict of interest (see WP:COI) and that you are probably a paid editor (see WP:PAID) with respect to such an article. After picking a new name, you must declare your paid status to adhere to our terms of service. You may request that the article be created, but I fear that it is unlikely to be a notable subject, and that therefore no such article is appropriate. See WP:NOTABLE. Please so not get suckered into a scam by someone who claims that they can get this article created if you pay them, either. -Arch dude (talk) 05:46, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Will Wikipedia make it possible for nonregistered users to nominate articles for deletion?

I wanted to nominate an article for deletion and found out that apparently I can't do two of the three key steps because I'm not a registered user. I don't expect to be able to do everything on Wikipedia as an unregistered user, especially not to actually delete articles myself, but I don't think a user should need to be registered in order to nominate an article for deletion. I feel like this runs counter to the original principles of Wikipedia that I learned about shortly after its founding. Is any related change being planned? Wikipedia:Articles for deletion#How to nominate a single page for deletion says: "If you are unregistered, you should complete step I, note the justification for deletion on the article's talk page, then post a message at Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion requesting that someone else complete the process." This is about the same amount of work as registered users have to do if they don't use Twinkle, but the work is probably easier because technical details with template calls are left to a registered user. My image won't show up!

Hello!

I've been making the page:HNLMS Koningin Emma der Nederlanden and I'm having some trouble with displaying an image in the infobox.

Here's what I've got:

I have looked trough the 'infobox image help page', but I still don't know why it just wouldn't work.

Two questions about a user essay

Yo. Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but here goes...

I've written my first user essay. Currently it's here: Wikipedia:The problem with elegant variation. Two questions:

• I've read the relevant page (Wikipedia:Essays#Creation_and_modification_of_essays) but didn't come away with a clear understanding of where it's OK to place user essays. Is it OK to put it in the Wikipedia namespace?

• The essay concerns a writing problem that I often correct on Wikipedia. One of the reasons I wrote the essay is so I can link to it in edit summaries as a way of explaining the change more thoroughly. I'm aware that essays shouldn't be referred to or linked to as if they're policy; however, is it OK to create a redirect (something like ESSAY:VARIATION) for the purpose of linking to this in shorthand?

Thanks for offering this, Popcornduff. I think as your essay is reasonable-seeming stylistic guidance it could stay in Wikipedia space as per the page on Essays you linked to. If it turns out there is a consensus that "elegant variation" is excellent style and should be deployed to the maximum extent all over Wikipedia, then the essay may have to go back to your user space, but this seems unlikely. It could be given a shortcut, perhaps Wikipedia:ELEVAR (the part before the colon denotes the namespace): Noyster (talk), 16:40, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

class question

Is there a <span class= that make text visible only to non-autoconfirmed users? Something like <span class="autoconfirmed-show>? Thanks. L293D (☎ • ✎) 14:04, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Using Wikipedia images without credit

This article by PCR-online uses File:Interior of Asda Panorama.jpg without attribution - what's the process for this? Chaheel Riens (talk) 14:09, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

The image description page says it's under Sharealike 3.0 which states it can be used under the following terms: "Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use." That suggests to me that acknowledgement of the source is required? You must include the license as part of the work if you use the GGDL. Here's the quote, from section 1 of the license: "This License applies to any manual or other work, in any medium, that contains a notice placed by the copyright holder saying it can be distributed under the terms of this License." Basically, the "work" in question is technically the entire image file page, not just the JPG, and the person who copies it must copy the whole thing and not remove the license. The problem here is that the GDFL was never a very good license for separate images. This is one of the reasons Wikipedia shifted to CC-BY-SA. -Arch dude (talk) 19:14, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

I think the short answer is that there is no procedure for actually dealing with this because it happens so often that people misunderstand the concept of “free” images that it is basically impossible to do anything about it. My only suggestion would be to contact the publisher of the article and ask them to please add proper attribution. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:27, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

• Wikipedia cannot act on this, and nobody can act on Wikipedia's behalf, either, because Wikipedia does not own the copyright being infringed. The copyright owner can contact the company infringing the copyright. Since the infringement is online, the copyright owner can use the DMCA in addition to other copyright laws. -Arch dude (talk) 04:10, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Technical question about blackouts

Note: this is a technical question about what is and is and is not possible. Discussions about whether we should do it will be collapsed as being off topic.

There has been some discussion on Jimbo's talk page about either showing a banner of about a blackout for all readers of the English Wikipedia in the E.U. Is either option really possible, or would any banner/blackout be seen by all readers world wide? --Guy Macon (talk) 15:19, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

@Guy Macon: At WP:SOPA, the options were USA only blackout or global blackout (and also USA only banners or global banners), so this leads me to believe that it is possible to serve different content to different regions. RudolfRed (talk) 15:32, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

• It is technically fairly easy to differentiate based on IP block for IPv4 addresses, even for registered users, not just IPv4 users. This provides a crude approximation of actual user location, but it is often used as a discriminator. -Arch dude (talk) 15:50, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

How do I stop vandalism on a page?

A few users have put unsourced info in this article (Muslim Abu Walid al Shishani) multiple times. I've had to revert those edits three times in the last month. Is there a way to add a template to prevent this kind of vandalism? Thanks. David O. Johnson (talk) 16:00, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

You can request that the page be protected here: Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. Three instances a month may not qualify the page as being heavily enough vandalized to warrant protection, but there's no harm in asking. You could also seek to have the vandalizing accounts blocked at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Matt Deres (talk) 17:03, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
