How?[edit]

How to update WikiProject templates on talk page.Kpgjhpjm (talk) 03:37, 10 May 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kpgjhpjm (talkcontribs) 03:35, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Kpgjhpjm, I struggled with this question during my initial days here. The best source for understanding the answer to your query is Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide. This link would give a significant overview of how Wikiprojects work and how the talk page templates should be used. If you feel you're still not clear, come right back. Receiving alerts that someone has tried multiple times to log into my account from a new device. What can I do?[edit]

I received a notice on May 3 that someone tried once. I immediately changed my password, which was already strong (randomly generated), to an even stronger one.

Tonight, I received a notice that multiple attempts have again been made. I'd like to know what I can do to secure my account further. Does anyone know the maximum length I can make my password?

Thanks! 1980fast (talk) 07:16, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Change your password. Abelmoschus Esculentus (talk to me) 07:39, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And have a look at this Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#"a_failed_attempt_to_log_in_to_your_account"_alerts - X201 (talk) 07:42, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@1980fast: Also, check out Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2018_April_25#Login_Attempts. Many people are having the same problems. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 07:46, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If someone tries to guess an editor's password and fails, the editor is advised "change your password". This seems crazy. Can anyone explain the logic behind it? Maproom (talk) 08:19, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Maproo, that's perhaps for the cases when genuine editors forget their passwords and try to login multiple times; they're then prompted to change the password. But of course, there are failsafe procedures if one were to choose the said option. 1980fast, you don't need to keep changing your password. If you feel your password is strong enough and you haven't used the same on public or other people's computers/devices, then just ignore those messages about failed login attempts. Lourdes — Preceding signed comment added by Lourdes (talkcontribs) 09:11, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
They are not advised to change their password. The message says: "Please make sure your account has a strong password". And then as a convience it provides a link to "Change your password". But i've noticed a lot of people interpreted this link label as being imperative/instructive. That wasn't really the intent. I'll open a ticket to see if a design can be found that is easier to understand for people. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 11:13, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest the phrasing "Click here if you wish to change your password." as an improvement over the existing text. Meanwhile, does anyone know the maximum length, if I want to make it ridiculously long? 1980fast (talk) 01:49, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@1980fast: mw:Manual:$wgMaximalPasswordLength and mw:Manual:$wgPasswordPolicy say the MediaWiki default is 4096. I haven't found signs of Wikimedia wikis changing the default but I don't recommend trying extreme lengths. If you do then I suggest you first make sure you can receive Wikimedia mails at the address stored in your account so you can get a password reset if necessary. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:31, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, thanks! I don't think I would have guessed the maximum would be anywhere near that high. No, I wouldn't do anything that ridiculous. I just didn't want to play a game of "guess the password parameters". I hate when sites do that. 1980fast (talk) 23:57, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A template to say that you need a separate page, which is now just redirection[edit]

In Russian wiki, there are a template to say a separate page is needed. Is this existing here? Or create it? 2A01:E35:2F41:D2D0:316D:F9F2:2C6C:335F (talk) 09:11, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean when a section of an article has become large enough to have it's own article? See Wikipedia:Template messages/Splitting - X201 (talk) 09:51, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Are you asking about something like {{R with possibilities}}? ~ GB fan 10:05, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

doubt[edit]

How to update WikiProject templates on a talk page? Please show steps. I asked this question here but I have a doubt.Kpgjhpjm (talk) 14:09, 10 May 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kpgjhpjm (talkcontribs) 14:08, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Kpgjhpjm: There are not really any 'steps' as such. You merely click 'edit source' at the article talk page and change the 'class' and/or importance/priority parameters as appropriate. However, as previously advised above, you should refer to the project classification scales via the links in the project banners and also as previously recommended, gain some more experience before attempting to review or assess articles. Sorry, this is the desk for requesting help in editing Wikipedia; it's not something we can help you with here. Eagleash (talk) 14:47, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is the sort of question that Google is good at, though the answer will depend on the country of course. Dbfirs 15:37, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Logo Change[edit]

Hi, I am the Marketing Manager for a company called Tropic Ocean Airways. We recently rebranded the company and I am having trouble uploading our new logo. I have tried many different sizes and resolutions but none are working. Please help me upload our new logo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropic_Ocean_Airways — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dp104758 (talkcontribs) 15:10, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It looks as if the current image was uploaded under a 'fair use' licence, and in .png format. If you go to that image's page (see here) you'll find that half way down there's an 'upload new version' link. Assuming you have the image in the same format and small size, I see no reason for you not being able to upload a revised version. Might I suggest you give it another try and let us know if you're still encountering problems. I'm not fully convinced about the notabilty of the subject, but that's another matter. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 16:16, 10 May 2018 (UTC) [reply]
@Dp104758: 'upload new version' is only availble to autoconfirmed users. I have used it on File:Tropic Ocean Airways Logo.png and added that version to the article. You uploaded a version to commons:File:TOA Logo.png but I doubt your company will approve the free license you specified. Companies usually keep their logos copyrighted and Commons does not allow non-free logos. Would you like the file to be deleted before your employer finds out you permitted everyone to use the logo for any purpose? PrimeHunter (talk) 19:41, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading Image[edit]

I want to upload a image that is was painted in 1840. This is over 150 years old, does this make it public domain? — Preceding unsigned comment added by History Man1812 (talkcontribs) 17:04, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming that this painting is from America, yes, that is completely fine. Any works published before 1923 are public domain, any unpublished works are public domain if they were published before then and are determined by the authors death date +70 years; If its older than that, it is considered public domain. Note, this only holds in America, and I'm assuming you are referring to America since you didn't specify the country💵Money💵emoji💵Talk 17:30, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It is completely fine in any country now. Ruslik_Zero 19:57, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is a minor subtlety. The painting's copyright has expired in all jurisdictions. The image (photo, or whatever) had its own copyright in some jurisdictions, but cannot have its own copyright in other jurisdictions since a mere faithful reproduction of a two-dimensional work of art cannot be copyrighted there: this includes the United States. When you upload the image, pick the appropriate copyright notice from the list. This will depend on the date of publication of the image. -Arch dude (talk) 23:54, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

AfD Warning template[edit]

Ther is, or at least used to be, a template to include in an WP:AFD discussion when it has been advertised off-wiki and one wants to advise potential newcomers that this is discussion and not a vote. I believe its text start with "If someone has asked you to come here..." Can anyone recall the name of that template? DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 20:13, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Translating Wikipedia Article[edit]

Hello,

I am trying to translate an article (Laudetur Jesus Christus) from English to Croatian. I have made all the necessary changes in a text editor and am wondering how to publish it. I've tried publishing an edit to the English article and tried to find a way to change the language but couldn't. I then created a draft with the text in Croatian but couldn't find an option to change the language.

How do I publish a simple translation of an article?

Thanks!

Dominik Agejev (talk) 20:23, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please ask your question on the Croatian Wikipedia. Septrillion (talk) 21:13, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds as though you haven't realised that each language Wikipedia is a totally separate project, Dominik Agejev, with a different URL, and nothing shared, except that any of them can draw material from Wikimedia Commons. If you want to create an article in the Croation Wikipedia you need to go to that site and follow their procedures from creating articles. You might also find WP:Translate us helpful. --ColinFine (talk) 22:57, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

artcile on Gina Haspel in Spanish[edit]

Hi, Your Wikipedia article in Spanish describes the above-mentioned lady as a "Fascist torturer" (fascista torturadora"). I believe this is an inappropriate way to describe a subject of such an article. She may in fact be that but it's not Wiki's place to state that.

Categories[edit]

Hi, I am wondering how I might go about requesting that a specific category be removed. The category is Johnson Family Enterprises. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Johnson_Family_Enterprises)

Johnson Family Enterprises does not exist and the linked page was previously removed as per deletion request.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Johnson_Family_Enterprises)

I should note that as archivist and historian of SC Johnson, I have a conflict of interest. Thanks for any advice. Wax86 (talk) 21:10, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:CFD Septrillion (talk) 21:13, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That afd makes a very compelling argument for deletion of the category as well, and I have no conflict of interest, so I went ahead and nominated it, see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2018 May 10. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:46, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please help. I have added a file which needs to be a lot smaller.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Markle%27s_great_great_great_grandmother,_New_Hampshire_landowner,_Mary_Hussey_Smith.jpg

Also, the caption under the file should be - "Hussey's direct descendant was Mary Hussey Smith". Please help sorry 110.147.194.210 (talk) 22:40, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Done. All it needed was |thumb| added to the image link. That little bit of code automatically sizes and places the image. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:46, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Can the image be made smaller - it looks too big to me. Thanks 110.147.194.210 (talk) 22:50, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it can. Help:Pictures#Thumbnail sizes contains significant details on how you can do the same. However, the picture size, as it looks right now, seems quite appropriate. You may consider leaving it as it is. Warmly, Lourdes 23:30, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have tried to make the picture smaller but failed. Are you able to make it smaller please? Sorry to trouble you110.147.194.210 (talk) 23:34, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
