Parliament Square - Millicent Fawcett Statue[edit]

As I understand the present situation, this is incorrect. This is proposed, not actual. I have just been asked to write to Westminster Council planning to make an objection to the removal of the current Emmeline Pankhurst statue and replace it with the above. Wikipedia can't publish articles about world facts that are untrue. This is a serious breach of public trust. Get your facts right. Don't publish stuff that is about to, may or is planned to happen!

I think you're confusing a few things. The Fawcett statue was unveiled in Parliament Square in April (see link above). The Emmeline Pankhurst statue has always been in Victoria Tower Gardens which is across the road. The plans are to not move the Pankhurst statue to Parliament Square, which was originally considered, but to move it to Regent’s Park instead. Our article seems to explain this quite well. More to the point, are you claiming that the seventeen separate photos we currently host of the statue in situ are fake? Incidentally, the removal of the current Emmeline Pankhurst statue and replace it with the above is flat-out fake news; the proposal is to relocate the current statue of Pankhurst and replace it with another of her at the same scale as the other statues in Parliament Square to put an end to the current anomaly where she's half the height of everyone else. ‑ Iridescent 08:50, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Separate block of text, outside the flow of an article[edit]

I am struggling to incorporate a piece of information in the narrative flow of an article. I could just use a footnote, but that is somewhat hidden, and this point (the size of the Sutherland estate - it was nearly a third of the county of Sutherland) is one of the "basics" for understanding the subject. It seems that putting it in a separate block of text may be a solution. I don't know the jargon for this layout device, whether it is acceptable in the Wikipedia styleguide or how to achieve it technically. Can someone give me some pointers on these 3 questions. If I can solve this problem, I can probably break down the article into smaller sections, so improving readability.

The article is Patrick Sellar - which is rather obviously half-written at the moment - but that should change shortly.

After kicking this idea around at odd moments away from a computer, and now reading your comment I see your point. (I was probably too fixed on the idea of a sequential narrative for most of the article, and am aware that I had already breached that objective.) What the article really needs is a map, and the text I am trying to find a home for could easily be the caption for that map. It might be difficult to source one without infringing copyright, but I am working on that. (One problem is that all(!!) books on the subject have the same map of estates in Sutherland from the same original source.)

Duplicate Name but no page[edit]

Hi,

I am an actress called Barbara Drennan. I have tried to set up a page with that name but I am being told the name is in use, however, when I search for Barbara Drennan on Wikipedia there is not page? I have had to set up this name as Barbara Elizabeth Drennan to use this facility, but I really need my name on the page to be Barbara Drennan. Please can you advise.

@Barbara Elizabeth Drennan: What you are doing is attempting to create accounts, not create an article. The account "Barbara Drennan" was created in 2014. You created the account you are using now. Your account page is not article space. An article about you will not have "User:" in the title. That said, creating an autobiographical article is highly discouraged on Wikipedia, see WP:AUTO. You also cannot use your user page for promotional purposes such as increasing your profile, please see WP:USERPAGE for what acceptable user pages are; they are supposed to be used for introducing yourself to the Wikipedia community in the context of your Wikipedia editing or use. 331dot (talk) 09:33, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The purpose of the sandbox is to enable editors to try out edits without affecting published articles. If you have spotted a pattern of vandalism, then please join us in reverting any vandalism to articles. A prior test in the sandbox will make it easy to identify intentions. (edit conflict) 627544editor - We typically don't ever apply protection to sandbox pages - that's the place where we want users to make their test edits and other changes if they're going to do so, and instead of doing so on an article or other place where such edits would be disruptive. If you see extremely problematic edits to the sandbox (or anywhere on Wikipedia) such as threats against another user, serious violations of Wikipedia's biographies of living persons policy, or copyright violations, as Abelmoschus Esculentus said above - definitely revert those edits and (in addition to warning the user) let someone know so that an administrator can redact the revisions. If 627544editor doesn't mind, if I could tack on a second question to theirs while we're on the subject.... The special ability of sandboxes, where anything can be entered without disrupting anything else—that's an ability of the sandboxes themselves and not their talk pages, correct? I was always under the impression that any changes made there went live as soon as saved (and I don't think I've ever "tested" it myself to see if that's true). Change language link[edit]

I've found that the link from the Dutch article "Biljoen" https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biljoen (in Dutch meaning 1,000,000,000,000; one million million; 10 to the power of 12) is linked to the English "Billon" which linguistically makes sense but it is incorrect. The Dutch "Biljoen" should be linked to the English "Trillion".

Your Dutch article explains that the American word Billion is a false friend because in America, and increasingly in the UK (since Harold Wilson decreed a change in meaning) the word is used with the American meaning of a thousand million. OliverTaylorSmith, just below the list of languages, you should be able to find something that says "Edit links". Clicking on that will take you to the right place, in this case, wikidata:Q41650356, the wikidata entry on "Billion". You will be able to login with the same account on any WMF project, so you should be able to edit it with your current account. The Vincent van Gogh article is extensively referenced, but if either of your sources can be used as further references for existing statements in the article, or if you wish to add additional encyclopedic information and cite these references, then please feel free to do so. Adding additional external links to works that are not used to cite specific statements is a bit more problematic: see Wikipedia:External links. The article already has some of these. I recommend that you open a discussion on the article's talk page (Talk:Vincent van Gogh) about the usefulness of your references as external links. Costs and consequences of the national debt.[edit]

Much is given to the national debt itself in Wikipedia. It's nearly always a discussion about the debt with comparatively little or nothing, by comparison, about the its annual cost in terms of interest costs, social wellness levels and inflation. You can get a flavor of my concerns by searching this Wikipedia site using keywords "national debt" and "cost of national debt." Facts and discussions about the debt are important, but I believe its possible to make the case that facts about the cost of it are equally important, or even more important.

And so it is I ask that you create a page devoted to the cost and consequences of the national debt; and that such a page be headed by a quote from John DeLulio of the Brookings Institute, To Wit: "The way we finance our current expenses and entitlements could be characterized as a Big Gorge on the assets of the not yet born."

Last year alone, debt service costs were $300 billion--enough to repair our bridges and roads twice. The CBO projects such costs will reach $800 billion and beyond within a few years. It's not totally clear what such an article would contain that is not already covered by National debt of the United States#Risks and debates, Political debates about the United States federal budget, and Deficit reduction in the United States. Hey anon. It's not totally clear what image you are referring to, since the only two images currently on the article are maps. But if you would like to upload some better images of Robbins, Illinois that you have taken, and license them for free public use, I'm sure they would help to improve the article. You can do this on our sister project, Wikimedia Commons by using the upload wizard. Just be sure they are images you have taken yourself, and not images taken from elsewhere online, because you would not own the copyright for those images, and would not be able to license them for public use. Our stock answer for confused posters:
Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. You don't mention which account you are referring to, nor the article involved, but I can say that accounts cannot be deleted, but sharing accounts and especially passwords is not allowed. If you did this, your account was probably blocked as WP:COMPROMISED. Nouf87, I'm afraid that it is likely you have been scammed. As the previous editors have mentioned paid editing is frowned upon, and offering to help put up a page for payment is pretty much looking for trouble. Sharing Wikipedia accounts is something that would likely get the account banned.
Basically, if anyone asks you to pay them for any reason on Wikipedia, they are probably running a scam (unless they're Jimbo). The AfC people even put up a warning here. That said, more details on exactly what your old username was, what the page is and when this happened would help us come up with a plan of how to move forward. — Alpha3031 (tc) 15:04, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Some users incorrectly think their account doesn't work because their user page says "Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact title". If the account you refer to is User:Nouf87 then you are already logged in and the account is working. Stuck on 2-factor authentication[edit]

A while back I enabled 2-factor authentication, but since then I've apparently forgotten how it works. When the login asks for the code from the authentication device, I've tried using Google Authenticator on my phone, but the code that I get isn't working for Wikipedia login. If you still have the scratch-codes that were displayed during the 2FA-setup, you can use one of the to login and another to disable 2FA on Special:Two-factor authentication. Else, if you have a committed identity or can prove your identity some other way, you can try filing a request at Phabricator for a developer to manually disable 2FA on your account. If this also does not work, there is nothing we can do to help since we have no idea what the problem is with your device's authenticator. When you enabled 2FA, you were provided with five scratch codes that you could use at any time and without need for the authenticator - do you still have them? Difference between content disagreement and attacks[edit]

I've been having a dispute on Talk:George Washington#editbreak2 and below about some added content. I feel like it's a minor dispute, but the other editor seems to feel attacked. There are more than two people in the discussion, so I can't use WP:3O. I don't really want to use WP:DRN yet, because it's a manageable content dispute, except for what I feel like are assumptions of bad faith. And it's definitely not WP:ANI territory. So, I was wondering if someone could drop in there and see if there are attacks I'm missing, or if the other editor needs to be guided away from personalizing the discussion. I fail to see why persistent vio of WP:BATTLEGROUND is "definitely not WP:ANI territory". Anyway I don't think this is the kind of "help" this page is meant to provide. Author's work citing[edit]

I have been trying to bring the wikipedia page for Gina Barreca up to snuff but am unsure how to do so. The errors on the page include: This biography of a living person needs additional citations for verification. (May 2018) This article relies too much on references to primary sources. (May 2018) This article may contain improper references to self-published sources. (May 2018) This article may rely excessively on sources too closely associated with the subject, potentially preventing the article from being verifiable and neutral. (May 2018) Some of this article's listed sources may not be reliable. (May 2018)

A lot of her work is cited because she is an author but I think this might be contributing to the errors. Should the articles be linked instead of cited???

Hello, ARockefeller. It's not of itself a problem to cite works by the subject of an article, but it is a problem if none of the sources cited are independent. Please understand that Wikipedia is basically not interested in anything the subject of an article has said, done, or published, except insofar as independent commentators have written about it. Almost all the sources currently cited in Gina Barreca are either by Barreca, by an organisation she is affiliated with, or based on an interview with her: none of these are regarded as independent. I haven't looked at all of them; but I am dubious that at present they establish that Barreca is notable in the sense that Wikipedia uses the word. What is needed is at least two or three references where people who have no connection with Barreca have chosen to write about her at some length. --ColinFine (talk) 23:20, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Date ranges in cite templates[edit]

I'm trying to cite an article series that was published in Motion Picture News, a weekly magazine, between February 7, 1925 and April 11, 1925. The cite magazine template appears to allow the use of date ranges, but when I put February 7, 1925 – April 11, 1925 in the |date= parameter, I get a check date value error. Do any other editors know if there's a way to get around this issue? If there isn't, it's not a big deal—using cite templates isn't a necessity. Why were my edits deleted.[edit]

@Vincent Desierio: Please read our policy on editing with a conflict of interest. In short, you should not edit the page, but make edit requests on the talk page instead. We are an encyclopedia, not a social media site. Would you expect Encyclopedia Britannica to allow you to modify their article about you? However, if something in that article violates our policies on biographies of living people (WP:BLP), we will try hard to react quickly to correct it if you tell us about it. The Altibase HDB page should be removed[edit]

Altibase HDB is no longer valid. Altibase HDB has been removed by Altibase about 3 years ago. Altibase HDB is now integrated with Altibase. The Altibase HDB page should be removed. I'm not sure the content of the page should be removed entirely—it's fine for an article to document something that is no longer being produced as long as the article cites reliable sources. If Altibase HDB is no longer being manufactured, feel free to update its article with reliable sources that document this. I notice there is currently a template at the top of the ALTIBASE HDB article suggesting that it be merged with our article on Altibase, and this seems like a reasonable option to pursue as well.
