August 25[edit]

Added two edit notes about the same thing[edit]

On the talk page for "[m]aritime fur trade" In a section I added to the talk page for "[m]aritime fur trade", I didn't notice the list of references that my quoting of citations caused, and on fixing it, added two edit notes, one before the quoted paragraph (the second one), and one at the end, restating it and apologizing for it. I added the first one because it felt dishonest not to have it before the edited quotation, and the second one to go into detail and include an apology, as I wanted the first one to be concise, and also, I almost always add an edit note at the end, unless it's something that strikethrough could take care of (in which case I don't usually don't add an edit note at all). Could anyone please tell me if I should do something like add a strikethrough to the second edit note, save for the apology, and add an additional apology for having two redundant edit notes there, and this whole debacle in general?

(Edit: Sorry about having to add strikethroughs to so much of what I published, and go back on what I said about not adding edit notes for strikethroughs, but this seemed to warrant an apology. Could anyone also please tell me if I should include edit notes every time I edit in strikethroughs?)

(Second edit: I've regretted asking that particular question now, along with most of this one. Sorry about all of this.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 02:37, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Thylacine24: have you tried posting questions in your sandbox and leaving them for a few hours to see if you are happy with the wording? That might allow you to change your questions without having to explain to anyone else.
If you still need to change a question I would recommend following Wikipedia:Talk_page_guidelines#Editing_own_comments, which advises that "you may continue to edit your remarks for a short while to correct mistakes, add links or otherwise improve them. If you've accidentally posted to the wrong page or section or if you've simply changed your mind, it's been only a short while and no one has yet responded, you may remove your comment entirely."
If you do edit a question Talk page guidelines recommend adding "a new timestamp, e.g., ; edited ~~~~~, using five tildes, after the original timestamp at the end of your post." That would be less confusing than the edit and second edit above.
The guidance also suggests that you can explain changes by adding "a new comment [in square brackets] immediately below your original or elsewhere in discussion as may be most appropriate". TSventon (talk) 10:10, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Thanks for telling me. Could you please tell me if you think I should apply these edits to the posts I've just made, or just keep your advice in mind for the future?--Thylacine24 (talk) 11:53, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thylacine24: Definitely keep in mind for the future, rather than further editing earlier queries.
I have been thinking how long I would regard as "a short while" and think up to eight hours would generally be fine. This page gets a lot of views but regulars will be happy if you can simplify your queries by adding fewer notes at the end. Article talk pages have a smaller readership so not many people will see if you change your query within "a short while".
Splitting a paragraph into two is generally uncontroversial as the existing text is still there in the same order, so I think it was unnecessary to start a talk thread about it. If you agree you could collapse your posts using {{Collapse top}}... lots of text ...{{Collapse bottom}} and post "Now resolved." plus signature at the end. You could just delete the Electric catfish query if you have decided it is no longer needed. TSventon (talk) 12:25, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks for telling me. Could you please tell me if your "collapse" and "now resolved" advice is something I should apply to the posts I made, or just something I should do in the future? Also, regarding the "[e]lectric catfish" entry – and I'm sorry to be moralistic – deleting the whole thing would be dishonest, and I still am curious about the comma-related issue. Could you please tell me if you think I should place a strikethrough over the rest of the text?--Thylacine24 (talk) 17:55, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thylacine24: I was suggesting that if you think your "[m]aritime fur trade" query is resolved, you could post "now resolved" and if you wanted to make it shorter you could collapse it. Both are my suggestions to follow if you wish, not official guidance.
If you want to delete part of the "[e]lectric catfish" query you could follow the process from the "Talk page guidelines" outlined above. TSventon (talk) 18:21, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Thanks for telling me. I'll try to figure out how to do what you said.--Thylacine24 (talk) 18:49, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: I think I did what you suggested about the "[m]aritime fur trade" talk page. The "delete" template didn't seem to work very well on the "[e]lectric catfish" talk page, though, and in the previews, was just a strikethrough.--Thylacine24 (talk) 19:02, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thylacine24: the guidance says that "<del>...</del> ... renders in most browsers as struck-through text, e.g., deleted" so the preview sounds fine. TSventon (talk) 19:12, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Okay, again, thanks for telling me.--Thylacine24 (talk) 19:16, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Oh, and sorry about that time I forgot to add the reply template in my third second reply to you.--Thylacine24 (talk) 21:22, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Also sorry to use a strikethrough without an edit note, despite my earlier uncertainty over whether or not to include an edit note with a strikethrough. No offense, but the section of the page you linked to didn't directly answer the question. I'm sorry as well to bring this up so late.
(Edit note: Included link, to avoid any possible confusion; sorry if you already knew and I just insulted your intelligence. Also, that should have been "section of the page you linked to"; sorry about my having to fix that. Could you please tell me if I should have added the insert tags around the entire link? Sorry to be overbearing and constantly apologetic.)
(Second edit note: Sorry about forgetting the "and" in the previous edit note, and having to fix it.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 01:20, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thylacine24: Hi, I have reread my answers and see I have not directly answered your questions about edit notes, I think I was trying to show you that they are not mentioned in the "Talk page guidelines" so they are not recommended. To be more direct, I haven't seen anyone else doing anything similar, they are not recommended by the guideline and they are often confusing, so my advice is don't do them. You probably need to link to an example in your new thread because the other editor seems not to know what you mean by edit note. I haven't answered there to allow you to get other opinions.
On insert and delete tags, my instinct may or may not be better than yours, but I would suggest delete tagging the whole link and insert tagging the corrected link as links are underlined so insert tagging is probably invisible. but my main point is just edit without insert and delete tags (or edit notes) as long as the post has not been answered. TSventon (talk) 06:34, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Thanks for answering the part about the edit notes, and sorry to take so long in getting back to you (I've had a lot on my mind today). For the record, I didn't add the link until after I'd first posted that response, so I was asking about using insert tags on it, not delete tags. Either way, are you saying that I should edit my previous response to you further? (Edit note: Sorry to do this after you recommended not doing so, but I improperly formatted the reply template when initially posting this response. Sorry about that.)
(Second edit note: Sorry to not have started my question with "[c]ould you please …", not to add a new space for the previous edit note, and to go back on your suggestion for the second time.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 23:00, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thylacine24:, the main thing is "you may continue to edit your remarks for a short while to correct mistakes, add links or otherwise improve them" as previously quoted, so further tags are not needed. For example, see the history of Talk:Arden University: I answered a query at 13:09, 27 August 2020, improved my answer at 13:56, 27 August 2020 and finally tidied some brackets. I used edit summaries such as "edit, add link to guidance" but I didn't explain myself further as the other editor wanted an answer to their question and were unlikely to want to know whether I had found the answer in one attempt or several. The other editor didn't reply until 08:20, 28 August 2020. TSventon (talk) 11:40, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Thanks for telling me that about adding edit notes. Could you please tell me if, by "further tags are not needed", you're referring to my question about adding tags to the link I inserted? Could you also please tell me if I should add another space between my first edit note in my last response? Another user recommended that I always(?) do this, but I'm worried that I'll just continue to strain the space of the help desk by doing so.--Thylacine24 (talk) 11:53, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thylacine24:, yes to your first question, no to your second question. I am generally relaxed about the details of formatting talk page posts, such as when to add a space. TSventon (talk) 12:45, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Thanks. So, just to be clear, I shouldn't do any additional editing to any of my previous posts in this thread. Could you please tell me if I got that right?--Thylacine24 (talk) 17:28, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thylacine24:, I think I have said enough. The thread should be archived shortly. TSventon (talk) 22:18, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Sorry, and thanks.--Thylacine24 (talk) 00:15, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Articles about India[edit]

i want to create some article regarding Indian culture and India places how can i have to start --Bollywood Filmiduniya (talk) 04:25, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at your draft Draft:Rohit Kumar (Artist), there are a number of problems. The most significant is that your references are misplaced. You should place each reference immediately after the text which it supports, see Help:Referencing for beginners. You also need to read Wikipedia's definition of reliable sources. You should also read the WP:Manual of Style, including MOS:ORDER. Another editor has added a welcome message to your user talk page, and this contains a number of useful links. Note that if you are asking a question about a new topic you should start a new section, rather than including your question in a section about a different topic, and note also that your signature should come at the end of your message rather than the beginning. I've dealt with those for you on this question. --David Biddulph (talk) 05:25, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ayurveda[edit]

Dear Wikipedia. In search of Ayurveda in Wikipedia I found information is totally degradation of Ayurveda medical system. Because ayurveda is mother of all medical science dated before Hippocrates and it has scientific evidence like books which dates centuries ago and present research publications. But you people consider IMA( Indian Medical association) statement and vandalised ancient medical science? I want to know, who is father of surgery to world?? Sushruta right he is a ayurvedic doctor. But you people still considering practicing ayurveda is quackery? I request you to gain proper information about ayurveda and republish it. Because we respect Wikipedia and its way of sharing a knowledge.

Thanks.

Please present your proposal on the talk page of the relevant article -- if this is Ayurveda, then Talk:Ayurveda. Be sure to provide references for what you propose. -- Hoary (talk) 06:51, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reading mode[edit]

Is there any suggestion how I can read the wikipedia pages in dark or night mode? The pages always open in light mode though my Google and phone settings are dark mode. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alik.nandi (talkcontribs) 08:53, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

AFAIK there should be some sort of user script or css piece that could make this work. Victor Schmidt (talk) 10:33, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Containt is not correct[edit]

Dear Team Wikipedia, when the cause of death is unknown, how you can let the people write about that. CBI India is looking this matter. Kindly look the issue Sushant_Singh_Rajput [[1]] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pgiri008 (talkcontribs) 10:36, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is no "Team Wikipedia". We are all individual volunteers here. Everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia. JIP | Talk 11:18, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
information Note: I'm pretty sure that CBI India is looking this matter should not be taken as a legal threat against us, and the intended meaning is that they're investigating the cause of death (whether or not they actually still are—I don't know anything about this case), not our statements about it. PointyOintmentt & c 18:48, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't seen anyone taking it as a legal threat. It's pretty clear that the CBI is looking to Sushant Singh Rajput's death. JIP | Talk 20:28, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Out of simple curiosity, is there any particular reason people find it difficult to accept that this man might have committed suicide? This isn't the first post like this I've seen. 331dot (talk) 20:31, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Beats me. I'm not Indian. In fact, Wikipedia was the first place I learned Sushant Singh Rajput even exists. Anyway, Wikipedia can only repeat what verifiable sources say about Rajput's death. It's not our place to investigate his death. JIP | Talk 20:36, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to edit a protected pages[edit]

Hi,i recently search about something and saw many wrong information so i try to edit it but it doesn't work so i participated on the talk page with reliable sources but i didn't get any response so want to ask how to edit a protected page.(Ultimate survi (talk) 15:25, 25 August 2020 (UTC))[reply]

Your first request was only two and a half hours ago, so you wouldn't necessarily have a reply yet, but your requests may well be ignored because you have ignored what the template says, that 'the request must be of the form "please change X to Y".' --David Biddulph (talk) 15:32, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Block Quotation[edit]

Hey, I was doing some reading on proper citation method, and I am now under the impression that the block quote at the end of the Criticism section on the In God We Trust page should not include the name of Theodore Roosevelt and the year at the end of the quote. Is that right? What Wikipedia policy should I read? Thanks for all help. Geographyinitiative (talk) 15:39, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also, are the quotation marks around the quote allowed? Geographyinitiative (talk) 15:41, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and made the edit. Is this edit in conformity with block quote policy on Wikipedia? [2] Thanks for any feedback! Geographyinitiative (talk) 20:15, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mistake on my fathers page, please help, his name is wrong and i dont know how to edit it[edit]

Good morning, my fathers page had his name wrong and i cant seem to be able to fix it. His name has been put as "Jose de Jesus Gutierrez Rebollo" when his true name is "Jesus Hector Gutierrez Rebollo" I have articles as well as my birth certificate and all needed documentation to prove this mistake. I am attaching just a few articles where you can confirm the correction:

Jgutierrezrebollopriego You need to request a page move, by making a request at Requested Moves. 331dot (talk) 16:28, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In English-language Wikipedia, the article on him is titled Jesús Gutiérrez Rebollo. But the article in Spanish-language Wikipedia is es:José de Jesús Gutiérrez Rebollo. If you want to get the latter corrected, you'll need to ask for help there, as the various language versions of Wikipedia are independent projects. I see that French-language Wikipedia also has his name as "José de Jesús Gutiérrez Rebollo". Maproom (talk) 18:24, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure how to parse moderator message and make successful changes to a page[edit]

@KsmithW281: you replaced a large block of well-referenced text with a new unreferenced block of text in Facing History and Ourselves. One of our overworked volunteer vandal fighters used a semi-automated tool to revert your change and generate that (fairly generic) automated message. Please find some references for your proposed test and discuss this in the talk page of the article at Talk:Facing History and Ourselves. Bullet points in ref[edit]

Considering this ref, how come there is that huge whitespace between the two bullet points? How can it be avoided?--Hildeoc (talk) 23:22, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Hildeoc: It doesn't look any different to me than the other bullet pointed refs in the reference section. Which browser are you using? TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 23:30, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Timtempleton: Thanks a lot. I'm using Firefox. (It indeed looks fine in Chrome, though …)--Hildeoc (talk) 23:33, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hildeoc: Looks like you found a bug. When you make the screen window narrow with Firefox, at select widths the space you mentioned appears. It's only when the last ref is bulleted. If you put in another ref at the end, the problem goes away. You might be better off posting this at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 23:39, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
