December 8[edit]

Guidelines for representing both sides of an argument[edit]

What is the recommended way to represent differing points of view in an article? In context of Indian farm reforms 2020, each provision of the law has its pros and cons and history of support and opposition of various provisions over time. Wondering how to structure this so it is readable. Any example of articles that do this well? Tandonneha (talk) 02:15, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tandonneha, as an encyclopedia, Wikpedia summarizes what reliable sources have said about a topic, and confines itself to the "high points" of a topic. Therefore, if your sources broadly describe the pros and cons of the farm reforms, you can do the same, rather than giving all the pros and cons of all the reforms. We want to write something that a typical English-language reader will find informative, rather than "the last word" on a subject.--Quisqualis (talk) 03:50, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Tandonneha, as a tiny aside and to complicate matters, Wikipedia has a due weight policy that asserts that proportions of the article dedicated to certain points of view are roughly equal to how prominent they are in reliable sources. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 04:42, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Henry Cavill Yahoo Profile Vandalism[edit]

Why has Henry Cavill's Yahoo profile got someone as partner when there is no evidence? No photos or articles. Nothing. Did this come from a troll on wikipedia? Can anyone update yahoo profiles? I thought they accumulated information from wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lockdownboy19 (talkcontribs) 03:17, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Lockdownboy19: I've removed it. This type of thing is unfortunately fairly common on certain types of article, or more specifically, articles about certain types of male. :/ If you're seeing it in any search results, they'll probably update themselves soon. Thanks for pointing it out. -- zzuuzz (talk) 03:26, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Zzuuzz: Thanks I'm new and just learning about all this. Can you confirm that yahoo creates the celebrity profiles based on wikipedia info? I was confused how this troll got to add a random partner on yahoo? Yet I can't see anything on Henry Cavill's wikipedia profile? Lockdownboy19 (talk) 03:35, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's fair to say that in many cases no one knows where they get some of their information, but Wikipedia would be a good guess for this. We have an article about Google's version of these 'profiles': Knowledge_Graph#Criticism. -- zzuuzz (talk) 03:53, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There's a help desk template that's been made for questions about Yahoo (Template:HD/YKG), and it seems to suggest that quite a bit of their information comes from Wikipedia. Seagull123 Φ 16:53, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Wikipedia essay process.[edit]

I am interested in writing a Wikipedia essay in the Wikipedia name space. This is the first time I am doing something like this. Is it the same as just creating a new page in the main space, or is it different? What is the process one has to go thru to do that? Aceing_Winter_Snows_Harsh_Cold (talk) 04:39, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Aceing Winter Snows Harsh Cold: Just the same, except that there is no requirement for notability or for referencing. Instead, the essay must contribute in some way to building, improving, or maintaining Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 05:44, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude:Is it a good idea to start a something like a Wikipedia essay in Draft space, or should one just go straight ahead into create new page? What is your opinion? Aceing_Winter_Snows_Harsh_Cold (talk) 05:51, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Aceing Winter Snows Harsh Cold, I don't know of any draftspace for essays, but perhaps you might want to think about using your own userspace to draft your thoughts? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 05:53, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tenryuu:Wouldn't some thing along the title of Draft:Wikipedia:Name of Wikipedia Essay would work, or it would not? Also, when submitting a draft for consideration from a user's own sandbox, how does the assessor know what page name to give it if they give the green light. Aceing_Winter_Snows_Harsh_Cold (talk) 05:56, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Aceing Winter Snows Harsh Cold: I recommend that you draft your essay at User talk:Aceing Winter Snows Harsh Cold/Name of Wikipedia Essay then once you're happy with it simply copy/paste it to Wikipedia:Name of Wikipedia Essay. You may want to read Wikipedia:Essays for more information, and maybe look at some other essays first. nagualdesign 11:41, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Aceing Winter Snows Harsh Cold: I see no reason to use "Draft:" space. reviewers of drafts are focused on getting a draft ready for article space. I also see no particular advantage in starting in user space. A new essay in "Wikipedia:" space is unlikely to attract any attention until you announce it to the world and/or start adding inbound links. If you do start in userspace, then use a move instead of copy/paste to eventually put in into "Wikipedia:" space. -When you decide you want other editors to review and modify, just announce your new essay and put a description of the help you want on the essay's talk page. Do note that just as with articles, you do not WP:OWN the essay. -Arch dude (talk) 15:38, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

i would like to contribute photos of historical places[edit]

i have noticed when looking things up that many times there are no images i created an account mbrownimages but i don't understand the process to upload images for example Stone Mountain park in Georgia i have pictures of that, i would love to share one of the carving of the civil war officers on horseback I travel and photograph alot and could add images to enhance your pages just tell me how to do that thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mbrownimages (talkcontribs) 05:09, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Mbrownimages: This is wonderful. Thanks. Since you are the photographer, you own the copyright to these images, so you may license the copyright to us using the CC-BY-SA license as we require. All you need to do is get the image onto your own computer, and then click on the "Upload file" link in the left-hand column on this or any other page (or go here: Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard) and then follow the instructions for uploading to Commons. WARNING: CC-BY-SA lets anyone use your images for any purpose, including selling them, as long as they acknowledge that you own the copyright. Therefore, if you are a professional photographer, you may prefer to reduce the resolution of the images before you upload them, although I hope you do not feel the need to do this. -Arch dude (talk) 05:38, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Mbrownimages: After you successfully add an image to Commons, come back here for help in adding the image to an article if you have trouble. -Arch dude (talk) 05:47, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Mbrownimages: Uploading images can be very awkward if you've never done it before as there are a lot of options to choose from en route. My advice would be to use what they call the "old form" (click here), which is pretty straightforward. Remember to give each image a descriptive Destination filename (like "Stone Mountain Park.jpg" rather than "IMG00001234.jpg"), add a Description and Date in the Summary box, select a Licensing option from the drop-down box (I recommend "Creative Commons Attribution 4.0") and double check your spelling before clicking Upload file. nagualdesign 11:20, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Another minor tip, Mbrownimages is to make sure the images retain any exif data, as that becomes part of the record held on Commons and if you have a fancy camera with geolocation info, that confirms exactly where the image was taken. Many photographers "tweak" their images in photo editing software, forgetting that this may lose the exif information. It is also good practice to tag the images with some categories so that they can be found by other people using Commons search functions. The upload wizard on Commons is pretty good at leading you through the process. Contact me via my Talk Page if you run into any difficulties. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:05, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

company owned image[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lulu_Guinness

Hello, I am trying to upload the new store image which the company owns but it is deemed to be professionally shot (which it is). any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lisacarr456 (talkcontribs) 11:07, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lisacarr456 Typically the copyright of an image is held by the photographer, not the entity in possession of the image, unless the company had a contract with the photographer stating that the company retains copyright. 331dot (talk) 11:13, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That means that it might actually be easier for you to photograph the shopfront yourself and upload that. Otherwise you have to use the so-called OTRS process (see Commons help for details). Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:08, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Business page + company owner page[edit]

Hi Wikipedia Team,

We are looking to set up a company business page but cannot seem to find an explanation of how to do this, and cost/ongoing cost, if any.

Further, we look to create a page of the founder of the company.

Please offer any guidance on this?

Thank you in advance.

Tim T. 2A02:C7F:C21C:1400:7447:14F:5767:BD7C (talk) 11:40, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not place for companies to "set up a company business page" or otherwise tell the world about themselves.(or their personnel) We are only interested in what independent reliable sources say about your company, not what it wants to say about itself. You should use a website owned and operated by your company to tell the world about it, or social media. Please read about conflict of interest and paid editing. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia with articles, not mere "pages". 331dot (talk) 12:11, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There is no cost involved, as Wikipedia is a free database of human knowledge. 331dot (talk) 12:13, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The only critical requirement for a Wikipedia article is that the subject must be notable by our definition: This is very difficult for most companies and for most company founders. Do not waste any time or effort on any other aspect of article creation until you are certain that the subject is notable. We delete more than 100 articles every day, almost all of them because the subject is not notable. See WP:NCORP and WP:N. If your subject is notable, come back here and we can help you. -Arch dude (talk) 15:48, 8 December 2020 (UTC)-[reply]
And finally, it would not be your article. You wouldn't WP:OWN it, or control the content. - X201 (talk) 15:56, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No more donations[edit]

Good morning,

I would continue to donate, but you delete, alter, remove, poke fun at any articles that are related to alternative health and healing.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.127.241.48 (talk) 13:54, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Whether you donate or not is your decision, but withholding donations does not affect Wikipedia content, because the Foundation that collects the donations is not involved in day to day operations, and even if it were, this would cease to be a neutral encyclopedia if withholding donations affected content. If you have specific concerns about an article's content, we are willing to listen to you, but keep in mind that Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state. 331dot (talk) 14:06, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your donations, which go to the Wikimedia Foundation which provides (among other things) the physical computing power for eg English Wikipedia, which is in turn run by volunteer editors. We write about things which interest us: but Wikipedia is heavily biased towards the mainstream 'scientific' point of view. Ideas which do not conform to this relatively narrow approach tend to get little sympathy here. If alternative approaches to health and healing actually work for you, and you are not being deceived, then all power to you: but any answers to alternative health questions are not to be found here. Even simple things which have helped me like Bach flower remedies, St. John's Wort and Arnica may be derided, or at least any possible benefits will be minimised in the articles here. But I have also had Hodgkin's lymphoma, and it is only because of heavy-duty, big pharma chemotherapy that I am here today. On the other hand, as a completely free, crowdsourced, mainstream source of information, and for all its faults, Wikipedia has no equal. Hi IP editor, I've just fixed the error with this edit. Just FYI, you had opened the reference tag with "<ref" instead of "<ref>". Seagull123 Φ 16:47, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Younique false claims[edit]

Why is Wikipedia allowing false claims that Younique is a pryamid scheme I have made tons of money selling for Younique for over 2 years and I have recruited 10 others who have also made tons of money and I have never lost money but pryamid schemes are made to make you lose money but Younique does not make you lose money unless you sell products under cost — Preceding unsigned comment added by Noelle190 (talkcontribs) 15:23, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Noelle180 Wikipedia makes no claims as to truthfulness, as truth is in the eye of the beholder; see WP:TRUTH. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state. If you disagree with what reliable sources say about your organization, you will need to take that up with them. 331dot (talk) 15:47, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The logic of your post is in error. You present the fact that you have been successful in making money as, ipso facto, proof it is not a pyramid-scheme-type operation. Reading the article, or understanding how pyramid schemes work in general, shows why this is a fallacy. You are just one of the few who are actually profiting, where most are losing their shirts. Making donations to Wikipedia[edit]

Please stop sending me threatening sounding messages to make donations to Wikipedia. I sent £3.35 to Wikipedia on the 24 November! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.24.191.221 (talk) 15:42, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Which message have you gotten that is "threatening"? Keep in mind that as you are using an IP address, there is no way to know that the person sitting at your computer at this moment has donated or seen the donation requests before. You can turn off the request messages if you create an account. 331dot (talk) 15:45, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Administrative decision on dispute over article content[edit]

When there is a dispute over the contents of an article and you don't see another way than let an admin decide on the version to choose (and possibly, but not necessarily, protect the article for a period of time), what is the appropriate procedure? My research so far (e.g. Wikipedia:Protection_policy#Content_disputes) has not led me to the right answer. --KnightMove (talk) 18:13, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@KnightMove: Admins don't settle content disputes. Follow the guidance at WP:DR to resolve your dispute. Don't engage in an edit war. RudolfRed (talk) 18:29, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I have been trying to upload a png or jpeg of our logo to the page i'm creating and I keep getting a 'we can't determine this image,' message. Can you tell me what I need to do to get our logo inserted. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by StandStrongOrg (talkcontribs) 20:44, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

StandStrongOrg Logos cannot be inserted into drafts, so I wouldn't worry about doing so yet. However, you will need to change your username and make some formal declarations; please see your user talk page for important information I will shortly post there. 331dot (talk) 20:50, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
