Use of future progressive tense in biographical articles[edit]

I found an article using this tense in the passive voice with the verb "remembered" (though it also used the word "best" before "remembered"), then used the search function to find more like it. @Thylacine24: No. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. "(s)he will be remembered for X" is a prediction. See WP:CRYSTAL. If you can cite a really important source that makes this prediction (i.e., the prediction itself is noteworthy) I suppose it might be OK to say that "Schmadlap opines that (s)he will be remembered for X", but I hope this sort of thing is rare. -Arch dude (talk) 04:33, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'd also argue that wikipedia voice should never really use "remembered", unless from a specific person, a concept or name. When someone dies, quite often the press will state "X will be remembered for Y", but even if it is the case long after this, we should just state what they did, and how that effected others. @Thylacine24: I think that the editors in this thread are advising you not to use "(s)he will be remembered for X" yourself, unless you can cite a really important source that makes the prediction. Unable to donate to wikipedia[edit]

In response to the appeal by Wikipedia to donate, have tried using 2-3 different cards to make payment. For whatever reason it judoesnt go thru, You need to look into this as there may be several others facing a similar problem & may not take the efforts to look up contact wiki(which in itself was a task!) Vandalism help request from Fridolin freudenfett[edit]

I have noticed some vandalism at No Gun Ri massacre. Namely, the fourth paragraph of the top-of-page summary reads "Seems liberal Wikipedia will highlight American/UN atrocities, but absolutely completely ignore North Korean/Chinese/Russian war crimes. Hi all,

Please forgive this list of questions which has grown as I typed it. Two initial questions of trivial difficulty (asking for a friend), followed by others of much lesser importance but perhaps greater complexity.

1. Using {{cite book}} or any other similar template, is it possible to generate a 100% compliant Chicago Reference-list entry as shown in Author-Date: Sample Citations from the Chicago on-line manual? If so, could someone please show me how? I am aware of all the differences between Chicago and the standard output of {{cite book}}, which I am familiar with. For example,
  • Grazer, Brian, and Charles Fishman. 2015. A Curious Mind: The Secret to a Bigger Life. New York: Simon & Schuster.
  • Thoreau, Henry David. 2016. “Walking.” In The Making of the American Essay, edited by John D’Agata, 167–95. Minneapolis: Graywolf Press.
2. Similarly, is it possible to generate 100% Chicago inline parenthetical refs (Smith, 1997, 345) from a {{cite book}} or other template without the 'p.' abbreviation, where eg {{harv}} and {{sfn}} by default generate something like (Smith 1997, p. 345)?

Other citation queries, mostly to do with curiosity about the inner workings of WP which I don't actually need to know: please ignore for any reason. Recently I've been trying to understand various styles, including CS1 and 2, Chicago Author-Date etc., MLA, APA and so on. It definitely is a can of worms.

For a long time I've used {{sfn}}s with {{cite book}}, journal etc. as my main citation style, along with {{refn}} and {{efn}}, and occasionally a plain <ref>. I've always called it "Harvard-style referencing", although this a bit of a misnomer.

  1. Would it be vaguely correct to describe this as "numbered Harvard-style short footnotes with bibliography"? Is there a WP-specific official description of what this represents, or a page containing all this info all together?
  2. Am I correct in thinking that a very basic description of what goes on could be "The templates {{cite book}} etc. use CS1- and CS2-compliant parameters to generate an entry (CITEREF?) which can be linked with |ref=harv, and which is all formatted by the Wikimedia software to display a WP-specific citation (e.g in the bibliography) and short footnote in the 'correct' format"?
  3. Why does WP:PAREN not actually tell you how to implement Parenthetical referencing using templates?
  4. Could you describe how {{sfn}}s fit into WP:Parenthetical referencing? WP:MOS has almost nothing to say about referencing, apart from that it's down to a consensus for each article. Wikipedia talk:Parenthetical referencing seems to sum up the problem: it's fairly difficult to decide what to even call it. But as I understand it from CS Primer, there is no such thing as an official 'Harvard' style, although a number of UK universities use the Harvard System of Referencing (6th edition).
  5. How far does WP follow this 6th ed. linked above? Help:Citation Style 1 says that "CS1 uses (in addition to Wikipedia's own Manual of Style) elements of The Chicago Manual of Style and the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, with significant adaptations."
  6. Does the above phrase "CS1 uses (in addition..." actually mean "CS1, as implemented on Wikipedia uses (in addition..."
  7. Is there any guide to where the "significant adaptations" are described? Or the decision-making behind them?
  8. Is there a very simple diagram like a company organisation chart or flow chart that shows how all the different WP citation styles and templates fit together? I have found this information very difficult to come by in one compact, concise explanation. Something like Maslow's hierarchy of needs:
  • Citation styles for printed matter, eg Chicago, APA, WP specifications
  • CS1, CS2, which describe the formatting of citations and bibliographies in XML
  • {{cite book}} journal, etc., {{citation}}, {{harv}} etc.
  • {{sfn}}, {{refn}}, plain old ref name=
  • Where does CITEREF fit in?
  • Wikimedia software, parsers, HTML
  • What you seen on the screen

What should I do about an obvious COI editor that's not responding to help, questions, etc.[edit]

I'm not that fluent in such meta stuff over here in the enWP, in my home WP, the deWP I would go to either Vandalismusmeldung or Adminanfragen, thus I'll first ask here:
I have a problem with an editor with an obvious WP:COI, who is very resistant to any outside input. I don't think User:Schatzi0804 is the person itself (Christoph Hartmut Bluth), but either some relation, or someone ordererd to write this article here. They have obviously very little knowledge about the customs in a wikipedia project, are not interacting very constructive with others (in the deWP they have as well waged an edit war in the corresponding article, trying to insert the very undwikipedian english text in the german language article). I've asked stuff on their talk page → nothing. I've asked something on the talk page of the article → it got deleted by them without any real answer. The article got twice removed from the article namespace, there are 2 copies existing in draft and user namespace, still in the original, quite unwikipedian versions. Left-aligning particular columns[edit]

There's probably an easier way, but TemplateStyles should work, with a rule similar to 
table#nepal-medical-cases tr:first-child, table#nepal-medical-cases tr:last-child { text-align: left }

You neither need a permission from the page creator to edit the page. Howewer, you may need a WP:CONSENSUS or a good source. @Grupo Praedio: accounts cannot be deleted on Wikipedia. If you want to use a different account name you can ask to change your username, or since you have no edits besides this you could just create a new account with the name you want. In this wiki article: List of broadband providers in the United Kingdom. So should *every* ISP that operates in the UK be added the list.[edit]

I'm new to Wikipedia editing and was wondering if every ISP that operates in the UK should be added to the list in List of broadband providers in the United Kingdom, even the lesser-known ones. And a brief description of the ISP like it is now.
(Also, is broadband and internet the same thing?)
Any help is appreciated since I'm still learning.

@Tenryuu:, ah ok the 'reliable sources' bit makes sense. Thanks. I do have another question, if it's ok to ask in this thread, about a broken/misleading citation on Orange UK, I had already asked a question on it's an articles talk page, but no one else has posted on that for 5 years.

If you cannot find the age it's supposed to connect to, it should have {{dead link}} added after the citation, before the closing </ref>. @ONUnicorn:I just found an archive of the site on http://archive.is/, but I think I could only get the needed info through a dropdown menu, which opened a new page, which then redirected to the new front page, so I'm pretty sure its now impossible to cite this info, what should I do in this situation? Should I just add [dead link], or is there another thing for this situation? Thanks.

@LuckyMiner01: A list on Wikipedia is almost always supposed to be a list of things that have an article in Wikipedia. If it's notable enough to have an article, then it should be in the list, but in general this means you should create the article before you put it in the list. Earlier in the project, an editor was encouraged to use a "redlink" to indicate that the editor thought the subject was notable enough for an article and to request that someone write that article. This informal usage can still be found in some of our guidelines, but in practice it is no longer encouraged. I would recommend that if you think an ISP is sufficiently notable, you write its article first and then put it in the list. -Arch dude (talk) 04:27, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As I understand it the internet is the process of computers talking to each other on phone lines and radio links, aided by satelites. whilst broadband is the way that messages are transmitted over the internet. Hello, @Joanmp14: and Welcome to the english Wikipedia. Unfortunally I have to tell you that interface admins cant add or remove namespaces. This has to be done by one of the few system administrators that have physical access to the server, as you need to change the ini_settings.php of the particular wiki.
