October 7[edit]

This article has multiple issues. Please help to improve it or discuss these issues on the talk page.[edit]

I have my own wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_Singh_Kinsariya. But it showing some warning or error on top of the article section. Please help me to resolve the same. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 157.47.238.6 (talk) 06:16, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

When you say "[your] own Wikipedia page", do you mean that it's about you? If so, be sure to make suggestions for it by posting them in Talk:Man Singh Kinsariya, not by editing the article directly. To take one of the warnings as an example, "This article needs additional citations for verification", the word "verification" is linked: click on it and you'll see what it means in the context of Wikipedia (which is rather different from what it means elsewhere). Warnings aside, one thing that strikes me about this person is that ... nothing strikes me about him. Instead, he remains a blank. For an entire decade, he was a member of this or that legislative assembly. What did he do there? (As reported by reliable, independent, published sources, of course.) -- Hoary (talk) 07:30, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Company Page npot allowed to be published?[edit]

Hi, I created my companies page and I was told it's too marketing so it's not allowed from a commentor. Who is the one that determines this. What is determined as "too marketing", I am just explaining my companies profile. In addition, I was trying to upload my companies logo (done in house so no copyright) and it kept saying that it's rejected because of copyright.

Can someone please advise? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Samg67895 (talkcontribs) 07:59, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Samg67895 Please review conflict of interest and paid editing for information on required formal disclosures.
Wikipedia does not have "profiles", not a single one. It has articles, typically written by independent editors. An article about a company must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about the company, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable company. Wikipedia is not interested in what a company wants to say about itself, only in what others completely unaffiliated with the company choose on their own to say about it.
In addition, your edit took over an existing article and substituted yours for it. If you truly feel that you can write an article about your company, you must submit it using Articles for Creation. New users cannot directly create articles. Keep in mind creating an article is the hardest thing to do on Wikipedia, and it is even harder with a conflict of interest. You must set aside everything you know about your company and all materials put out by the company(press releases, staff interviews, the company website) and all announcements of routine business activities, and only write based on the content of independent sources. Most people have great difficulty with that. 331dot (talk) 08:05, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • In addition to the above, Samg67895, you are a bit hasty with your logo copyright here. It is certainly under copyright by default, and therefore the restrictions listed at WP:LOGO apply. If you have the authority to do so, you might release the logo under a free license compatible with Wikipedia, by following the process at WP:DCM, but make sure to understand the consequences beforehand (usually: anyone on Earth can reuse the logo for anything that does not infringe on trademarks). Should an article about a school building be merged into that school's article?[edit]

Hey, I proposed for Cairns Technical College and High School Building to be merged in to Cairns State High School, due to the fact that the building in the former article is more prominently known for being a building of the present-day Cairns State High School, rather than the other way around. Also, a significant amount of the Technical College article is word-for-word taken from https://apps.des.qld.gov.au/heritage-register/detail/?id=602834 (which while licenced under the CC BY 4.0, doesn't seem like it really needs to be replicated in its own Wikipedia article). An objection to the merger has been left on the talk page by the creator of the article, and I would appreciate some guidance as this is my first time proposing an edit of this scale.

Kind regards,

TwinTails (talk) 10:01, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cairns Technical College and High School Building is a long article, TwinTails, I'd have thought one that's far too long to merge into any other article. (I haven't even glanced at the article Cairns State High School.) I haven't read Cairns Technical College and High School Building, and thus don't know: Is it unnecessarily longwinded, or bulked up with trivia? If it is, then you should discuss radically shortening it; if it is radically shortened, then imaginably it would be beneficially moved within another article; if it isn't radically shortened, then it wouldn't be. -- Hoary (talk) 12:40, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Similar to Disputed template[edit]

The Template:Disputed is used when sources disagree. I've got a slightly different situation on Gamma Kappa Phi. The founding year is disputed *within* the organization, with some members using one, and some another. For the founding date in an infobox, it doesn't seem quite right to use Template:Disputed, but I don't know of a better one, ideas? (and yes, there are significant issues with the article, which can be saved, I just haven't been in a mood to shovel that much *censored* recently.)Naraht (talk) 14:13, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Naraht: you can add a footnote. I did something similar for the number of crew at SpaceX Dragon 2. -Arch dude (talk) 15:19, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Arch dude And then in the note reference point to the section that discusses. A *little* roundabout, but still much better the other choices I considered.Naraht (talk) 15:41, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Naraht: Yep. The footnote is just another technique to add to your editorial repertoire. We tend to get fixated on templates. In my case the big goal was to de-clutter the infobox even though it cluttered the article with a "notes" section. In your case, you could choose to just "hard code" a superscripted link, but I think this might be difficult for other editors to maintain later. [[#Similar to Disputed template|*]] would yield this.* -Arch dude (talk) 16:02, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Arch dude I like that idea even better.Naraht (talk) 18:20, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Naraht: Please add an inline internal comment <!--like this--> to explain to the next bewildered editor what you did and why. -Arch dude (talk) 19:18, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Arch dudeNah, if it was tough for me to figure out, the next editor shouldn't have it easy. :) I'll add something like <!-- disputed with organization, link to dispute information -->

HotCat in timeless theme[edit]

I use timeless theme on Wikipedia. I recently enabled HotCat for my editing needs, however, I just noticed the "category bar" which ought to show at the end of page is missing. But when I switch to vector theme, the category bar shows up at the bottom as expected. I'm pretty sure I've looked it carefully (unless I'm mistaken or the bar is placed elsewhere) but couldn't find it. Does anyone else also face this issue? Could someone suggest a possible solution? PS: I personally prefer timeless over vector since I find that prettier :-) —Wiki Linuz💬 ) 15:24, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

WikiLinuz: On Timeless, the categories are shown in the right bar, alongside the interwiki links. I also use this skin and unfortunaltey HotCat does not support it. Isabelle 🔔 15:21, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I can see the list of categories in the right bar, although that isn't what I'm looking for. HotCat does not support it—hmm, that's sad. Thanks anyway. —Wiki Linuz💬 ) 15:23, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
According to Wikipedia:HotCat#Compatibility, you can move the category box to the bottom using CSS to make it work. I haven't tested this, though. – Rummskartoffel 17:05, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Massive BLP violation - what to do?[edit]

There is an actor with a massive BLP violation, in my opinion. The WP article said that the actor hired prostitutes, was caught, and sentenced to prison. There is no mention if he actually went to prison. I am told that this actor was framed and that it is well known and reported that he did not use prostitutes.

This actor is foreign, not American or in the US.

What should be done?

1. Nothing. Leave it to someone else. So what there is a BLP violation.

2. Fix without citations.

3. Try very hard to find foreign language citations of a language that I do not speak. Neglect my work and life to find this.

4. Report it and hope someone else does it.

5. Use it as proof as why Wikipedia is wacky.

I really don't know. I tend to lean to #1 except the "so what" part. Maybe in 3-4 weeks, I will have more time. Charliestalnaker (talk) 19:31, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Disclaimer: I have never heard about this actor until a few days ago. What if he was framed? Does Wikipedia ignore it and say "there are some sources which Wikipedia deems reliable?". Or do we write a neutral thing and say there are reports both ways? Or just don't have anything about prostitution? If something is written neutrally, its presence is not neutral because it does smear the guy's reputation. Charliestalnaker (talk) 22:32, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Charliestalnaker: I suggest you post your concern on the article's talk page - Talk:Huang Haibo (actor) - with the full URLs of the sources you have mentioned. Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 23:05, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to because I have no knowledge of this actor. That would be like you editing some advanced Physics article (assuming you are not a physicist). I also don't know the quality of the references or what the true story is. All I know is that I read about prostitution and then asked someone else who knows about Chinese movies who said he was framed. Charliestalnaker (talk) 23:18, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Charliestalnaker: I am not suggesting you edit the article. I am suggesting you share exactly what you read on the talk page, in the hopes that other interested editors can evaluate the quality of the references and use their knowledge to determine what (if any) changes should be made. A mistake in the article[edit]

Hello, There is a possible mistake in the article "Bodybuilding". Under the section "Muscle growth", topic "Protein" it says the following: This is a widely debated topic, with many arguing that 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day is ideal, some suggesting that less is sufficient, while others recommending 1.5, 2, or more.[58] It should say 1, 1.5, 2 or more grams per kilogram of body weight, not per pound of body weight. Two grams of protein per pound of body weight could lead to protein overdose. Please refer to the reference 58 or other appropriate sources to determine if a mistake was made. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 520Rob82 (talkcontribs)

I see reason for this to be changed (it talks about grams, which is metric, per pound of body weight, which is imperial) although I'm not actually all that knowledgeable in correct measurement units for health related stuff so maybe it's correct. THanks for bringing this up though! ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:13, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Login page is broken.[edit]

I'm trying to log into my account on my PC. I'm logged in on my phone, but I forgot my old password. Trying to log in with a temporary password, but that won't work. Probably something to do with the captcha (always a bad idea), but otherwise no idea. I can't get in to ask this question on my PC, because my IP has been blocked (no reason given, blame "NinjaRobotPirate"). Any advice? Could someone from the technical team just get me into my account?

I don't think the technical team tend to hang out on this page, which is generally about editing. Try asking at WP:VPT. --ColinFine (talk) 20:56, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Inline citations using a source multiple times[edit]

I have read and downloaded until I am blue in the face.

how do you actually create a named reference... not pages of options. I have tried to follow the directions.. however, they seem to be written in English...but they create more questions than answers.

I have six sources The first citation is Tso, Yi-Hsuan. "Rosemary Daniell". New Georgia Encyelopedia. Georgia Humanities Council and University of Georgia Press. Retrieved March 21, 2021.

when I tried to use it again--I can't figure this out [1] Everything I try either gives me a multiple entry in references of an error message. So not helpful This page creates a foot note from < ref name = "WHAT GOES HERE? " > I'VE PUT SPACES SO IT WON'T ... HELP PLEASE.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Nikkipoy (talkcontribs) 21:45, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For Tso write:
<ref name="Tso">{{cite encyclopedia |last1=Tso |first1=Yi-Hsuan |entry=Rosemary Daniell |url=https://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/arts-culture/rosemary-daniell-b-1935 |encyclipedia=New Georgia Encyclopedia |publisher=Georgia Humanities Council and University of Georgia Press |access-date=21 March 2021}}</ref>
that is the definition. For the second and subsequent references to Tso (reuse) write:
<ref name="Tso" />
An example inline reference definition[2] and an example inline reuse.[2]

References

  1. ^ content
  2. ^ a b Tso, Yi-Hsuan. "Rosemary Daniell". New Georgia Encyclopedia. Georgia Humanities Council and University of Georgia Press. Retrieved 21 March 2021.
Note that the name you give after name= is an arbitrary name you are choosing to assign to the source for the purpose of referencing in that article: it need not bear any relation to the title or author of the source. You could use "WHAT GOES HERE? " as the name, and it should work, following Trappist's example. --ColinFine (talk) 22:03, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there is no prohibition on names. You could name a reference as name=fuckisfun and name=shittastesgood. Those are a little too much so I would suggest not to use those names as references. Maybe name=newgeorgiacrap? Charliestalnaker (talk) 23:25, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Charliestalnaker, do not encourage or engage in disruptive editing such as you have done above. Trolling and gratuitous profanity is disruptive. A reference name should be a mnemonic, and if it is a character string without spaces, the quotation marks are neither required nor useful. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:15, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Charliestalnaker: The reference names are visible to the readers, so they are part of the content of the encyclopedia. In the reference section each reference begins with a ^ symbol of a list of lowercase letters. These are clickable backlinks which jump you back to the correct point in the main text. The URL of these backlinks incorporates the name of the reference - so when I hover over the first link here, Firefox tells me at the bottom left that I am about to jump to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Help_desk#cite_ref-WHAT_GOES_HERE%3F_1-0. So, although the names are arbitrary, jokes/swearing/opinions/etc are not appropriate. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:21, 8 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Revision history[edit]

It used to be possible to jump to the last page of revisions by using the ‘oldest’ link, which I think used go=last. Now it just displays the revisions in reverse chronological order (using dir=prev). Is it possible to access the last page some other way, whilst maintaining regular chronological order?

--Kurisumasen (talk) 22:45, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Kurisumasen: Hi there! When I go to Help talk:Citation Style 1 and click "View history", it shows the most recent edits (October 2021) in reverse chronological order (newest to oldest). When I click the "oldest" link, it shows the oldest edits (December 2011) in chronological order (oldest to newest). GoingBatty (talk) 23:11, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I do apologise, I meant the other way around. So I want to keep the list order as oldest to newest, but have ‘oldest’ go to the oldest page, rather than reverse the list order. I’ve been poring over the MediaWiki docs but I can’t work out how to do it.

--Kurisumasen (talk) 23:21, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well boy howdy. It does do this. This is brand new, and quite annoying. It wasn't broken before, and didn't need fixing, and especially didn't need making worse. Reversing the chronological order (older at top instead of bottom, and not universally) -- this is no good, no. Who did this, why, and where do we go to get this undone. These are the questions now.
