Searching for keywords within pages and titles that belong to a certain category[edit]

I am trying to find a wayy to search for keywords, in this case numbers, within pages that belong to a certain category. I have tried to look up how to do this and the best I could come up with iis along these lines. When searching for the number 44 in pages that belong to "Aviation" I attempted this search" "44" incategory:"aviation" Unfortunately this does not work as I intended so I was hoping someone could show the correct way to carry out that type of search. Thanks!

Finding articles to create[edit]

I know this might sound like a "newbie" question, but is there a single page somewhere that lists articles that should be created in the future? Partofthemachine (talk) 01:20, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Partofthemachine: WP:RA might be what you're looking for. TipsyElephant (talk) 01:30, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Partofthemachine: Take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles. It's an old ongoing project. Also, if you are multilingual, you may be able to create lists of articles present in other-language Wikipedias with no English equivalents that you can translate, IF they meet our notability requirements. -Arch dude (talk) 02:51, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Another possibility is to go through articles in a subject area you are interested in and look for red links. That usually indicates that someone has found a subject that needs an article, but which is not yet created. --Jayron32 12:58, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Closing an RfC[edit]

Would it be appropriate for me to close an RfC that I opened (see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Podcasting#RfC_on_podcast_episode_lists)? And would it be appropriate to include a summary of what I thought the consensus was? Or should I let someone else (or more likely legobot) close it? TipsyElephant (talk) 01:20, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Generally speaking, you should not close a WP:RFC if you have been involved in it in some way. I would agree that standalone lists of podcast episodes probably fail WP:NLIST, but the RfC should be closed by an uninvolved editor.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:15, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I kind of figured, but some reason I wasn't seeing anything at WP:RfC that expliticitly said one way or the other. TipsyElephant (talk) 11:18, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just as a side note, if you find an RFC that you were not involved in, you are explicitly allowed to close it and write a summary. Any experienced editor who was not involved in the RFC may close any RFC. However, I agree, if in this case you were involved, you should wait for someone else. --Jayron32 13:23, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Keep getting message when trying to publish changes "Error contacting the Parsoid/RESTBase server (HTTP 404): (no message)"[edit]

I'm trying to publish changes on a page but every time I click publish I get this message:

"Error contacting the Parsoid/RESTBase server (HTTP 404): (no message)"

I'm hesitant to refresh the page as I will lose all of my changes! Please can someone help? TheChadderz (talk) 09:51, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, TheChadderz. I suggest that you ask at Village pump - technical where editors familiar with technical challenges offer advice. Cullen328 (talk) 10:11, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TheChadderz If this happens again, you can always preserve what you have done by selecting all the text in your edit window and copy/pasting it into an external text editor. I regularly keep copies of work-in-progress in a text editor like WordPad and just use the Wikipedia editing window to "Preview" how it will look, without save/publishing anything until I'm finished. Deleted pages / accounts[edit]

When an old account or page is deleted due to vandalism, is it possible for other people to create a page or account with the same name? --MystiiFlareon2 (talk) 10:25, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

MystiiFlareon2 Accounts cannot be deleted. If an account appears to be unused, it may be possible to usurp it in some circumstances. If an article(the preferred term, not the broader "page") is deleted, it is possible to recreate it if the reasons for deletion are addressed. I could be more specific if there was a specific article you had in mind. 331dot (talk) 10:28, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for answering. It's not about a specific article, I was just wondering. --MystiiFlareon2 (talk) 11:15, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Accounts that have been created just to claim a name[edit]

I was bored and checking out account names, and saw that Quaxly, Fuecoco, and Sprigatito, have all been created on almost the exact same time. The names are related as well (all being new pokémon starters. I can obviously not 100% confirm that these are made by the same person, but I assume it is not allowed to create accounts just to have a name claimed? Is this part of sockpuppetry? (Sorry for not being able to link properly, I don't know how to link a contributions page. --MystiiFlareon2 (talk) 11:15, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@mystiiflareon2: meh. they aren't causing any disruption right now. leave them alone. lettherebedarklight晚安 12:41, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Domain squatting is not disruptive. Ironically positive effect is inactive squats prevent other people from being disruptive with same names. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 12:47, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, it's perfectly permissible for someone to create an account with a username very similar to their own (as in the person who is creating the account is the same person as the account with the username they are copying) to prevent vandals from creating doppleganger accounts (which is blockable). ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 15:08, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If those accounts have made no significant edits the username can be usurped by another editor. Shantavira|feed me 15:06, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mount Rushmore monument[edit]

Is there a list of people who assisted in the building of the Mount Rushmore monument? I'm told an ancestor was responsible in the building of it and want to confirm, if possible. His name was Cyle Swisher or Switzer. He was of German descent. Swish61 (talk) 11:42, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Send and email to National Park Service. Ask them. Pierpao (talk) 12:16, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Swish61: This page is about getting help with using the features of Wikipedia. If you have questions about general knowledge, you might try asking at Wikipedia:Reference desk instead. --Jayron32 12:56, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Our article section Mount Rushmore#Construction mentions that there were 400 construction workers, and has an image of the plaque listing them. unfortunately parts of it, including the "Esses" are at the limits of legibility, but you may be able to find other, clearer images by searching online. Reference 33 of the article links to a website page with contact information for the Monument Park. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.194.245.235 (talk) 12:59, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Swish61: If you choose to go yourself to Mount Rushmore, please take a better picture of the plaque. Then come back here and we can help you upload it to Wikipedia Commons and add it to the article. -Arch dude (talk) 15:45, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Swish61: the Historical Marker Database has an image of the plaque which includes Clyde Swisher. TSventon (talk) 16:22, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Smartshri99. On the basis of those links, I would say "possibly". If you can find more sources like the Tricity Today one, yes; but that is the only one of the 5 you give that might contribute to establishing notability. The 2nd and 3rd just mention his name, and so cannot contribute to notability; and the Youtube links are not independent (one is by him, and one is an interview with him). Please see WP:42 to help evaluate whether sources contribute to notability or not. ColinFine (talk) 18:07, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the article not showing up on the Articles for Deletion page?[edit]

I’ve nominated the Hitler family in Ohio to be deleted. I’ve added it to the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2023 January 11, but it’s not showing up even though it’s at the top of the list. Why? Can anyone help me? Thanks. Abdul Akter (talk) 19:11, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Abdul. Only the text paragraph is showing up (no heading) because that is all you have put in WP:Articles for deletion/Hitler family of Ohio. If you compare WP:Articles for deletion/Peter John Watson, you'll see that that has a header, and a load of material that I assume was put there by a substituted template. I don't know how to fix it - on the rare occasions I have nominated an article for deletion, I have used Twinkle, that sets up all the files and templates as required. Issue with IP block affecting account editing.[edit]

I am currently not able to edit Wikipedia using a certain device because its IP address falls within a range that is blocked by Wikipedia. Even when logged into my account on that device, I cannot edit articles or even my talk page. I have checked the block log and there has been no action against my account, so I believe that the IP address is in an unfortunate range. This should not affect my account given that I am logged in. I am not sure how to resolve this and have tried signing out and back in. I would appreciate any advice. ...JohN...DoE...DeeR...JohN... (talk) 19:25, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, John etc. I think you need WP:IP block exemption. ColinFine (talk) 19:29, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I was unsure about how to do that....JohN...DoE...DeeR...JohN... (talk) 19:30, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Table keeps going to bottom of page no matter what I do[edit]

Hey, tried to add a neat little table to Sharon Horgan (Awards and Nominations) but it keeps automatically sending itself to the very bottom of the page no matter what I do! I have no clue why the table keeps doing that. Any help would be appreciated - I'm a bit of a noob to Wikipedia! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.78.45.118 (talk) 19:40, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

the problem appears to have been that there was no closing line on the table, I believe I have fixed it now. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:00, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
legend!! thanks a mil 109.78.45.118 (talk) 20:21, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish compound surnames & name-date citation[edit]

I'm trying to create a citation for this conference paper, which has a bibliographic record at the conference's website (find it under 2017 and click on 'bib'). I know that Spanish names have both a paternal (first) and maternal (second) last name and you typically want to use the paternal one, so that explains why the second author's name varies; and I am pretty sure that the hyphen in the first author's name is just a stylistic way of linking the two surnames, so that's the same as well. Should I be using both surnames in {{sfn}} references, which will mean using both surnames in {{cite conference}} (since I don't know how to get both surnames in the citation without also needing to use both surnames in the references)?

For reference, here's my current version of the citation using {{cite conference}} and only paternal names:

  • Castro, Daniel; Ortega, Reynier; Muñoz, Rafael (2017). "Author Masking by Sentence Transformation—Notebook for PAN at CLEF 2017" (PDF). CLEF 2017 Evaluation Labs and Workshop – Working Notes Papers, 11-14 September, Dublin, Ireland. ISSN 1613-0073.

Polyphemus Goode (talk) 20:40, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would certainly use "Castro-Castro, Daniel" and "Ortega Bueno, Reynier" in the citation, since that's how the authors chose to give their names in the paper. Presumably, you'd use {{sfn|Castro-Castro|Ortega Bueno|Muñoz|2017|p=whatever}} for the shortened footnotes. Deor (talk) 23:26, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
