How to stay logged in?[edit]

I log in using LastPass. I've always stayed logged in for a very long time, but recently I've been logged out every few hours. Is there anyone there who knows what went wrong and how to fix it? 98.2.238.89 (talk) 00:53, 16 June 2023 (UTC) David Spector[reply]

I would check the following items:
  • Make sure cookies are allowed for Wikipedia in your browser settings
  • Try clearing cookies for Wikipedia
  • Check that your device's date and time is set correctly; if not, cookies may not work as intended, due to expiring sooner than it should for example.
You can find more help and info at mw:Help:Logging in#Log in problems. — AP 499D25 (talk) 03:47, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

En.wiki page: "Meneguzzi in 2004"; it.wiki page: "Paolo Meneguzzi nel 2007". Why? It's the same image. JackkBrown (talk) 01:41, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JackkBrown. The Wikimedia Commons file information page is the source of the discrepancy. Clearly, the uploader made an error. The editor who added this image to Commons has only edited English Wikipedia three times in the last five years and is even less active on Commons. I recommend removing the year from the caption. If in doubt, leave it out. Cullen328 (talk) 01:56, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And the source page given [1] has the contradictory "Musica Tour 2007/Taken on January 1, 2004" too Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:55, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looking again at that page where it says "Show EXIF" it seems 2004 is the correct year. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:18, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a template for Wikipedia being used in scams?[edit]

If you look at the history of the page Beate Heister you will see repeated (and reverted) attempts to add information that this page is being actively used as a part of confidence scams ("2,8 million euro donation" etc). This scam usage is also discussed in the talk section of the page.

Since this is more of a Wikipedia meta-issue than anything to do with the content of the page itself, a template to mark this and warn naïve readers about the problematic situation would seem appropriate. Does such a template exist, if not, should one be created?

OttoMäkelä (talk) 08:30, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@ottomäkelä: wikipedia will not have any disclaimers. lettherebedarklight晚安 08:36, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The existence of such a template has a strong potential for abuse and I think it would cause more problems that it would solve. 331dot (talk) 08:41, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As noted above, not a disclaimer of the content but more of meta-information on Wikipedia itself. Even with the potential for abuse, the fact remains that currently abuse is being committed using Wikipedia as a tool. OttoMäkelä (talk) 08:44, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
has it been noted by reliable publications? if not, it does not warrant a mention. lettherebedarklight晚安 08:57, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, if reliable sources write about any scams involving the article, it could be written about as encyclopedic content(not as a warning). 331dot (talk) 08:59, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Serbo-Croatian in wikipedia[edit]

Hi there,

I noticed there is a whole editorial group on Wikipedia which writes and supports Serbo-Croatian, a language which doesn't exist. Moreover they are writing in Serbian, latin and cyrillic - Croatian doesn't have cyrillic at all. If they are similar dialects spoken in Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, B&H etc, which is also debatable, why call it Serbo-Croatian?! That discriminates quite a bit against Croatian, but completely against the peoples of B&H and Montenegro. I wouldn't mind if there is communal support for calling it "Madiera" if people so desired, but it is dicriminatory dsignated as such and was a political construct in Yugoslavia which has ceased to exist 32 years ago (from a Croatian perspective). How do I begin a process to dissolve them as a group or get them to rename? Do I need to engage with them first? Thanks. 185.207.71.146 (talk) 10:53, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

IP editor: One of the behavioural guidelines of Wikipedia is to assume good faith. Hence it would certainly be best to engage with the group politely on a relevant Talk Page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:00, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
...i'm sorry, what? lettherebedarklight晚安 11:01, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, according to Serbo-Croatian it does exist, though, after reading the first paragraph, apparently it's complicated. The reason on WP to call something Serbo-Croatian is because WP:RS do, and WP:s articles are supposed to summarize WP:RS.
Talk:Serbo-Croatian Has this message:
"In English, the language spoken by Croats, Serbs, Bosniaks, and Montenegrins is generally called "Serbo-Croat(ian)". Use of that term in English, which dates back at least to 1864 and was modeled on both Croatian and Serbian nationalists of the time, is not a political endorsement of Yugoslavia, but is simply a label. As long as it remains the common name of the language in English, it will continue to be used here on Wikipedia."
Yep, you absolutely need to WP:COMMUNICATE. You can try starting at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Languages. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:02, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For the benefit of anyone reading this who wants a bit more background: Vienna Literary Agreement. Needless to say, this is a complex and divisive issue, and not something Wikipedia should be engaging in great-wrongs-righting over. AndyTheGrump (talk) 11:04, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of User: Donnellyeditor by 64andtim[edit]

Dear Sir/ Madam

I hope you are well and that you can help me with this.

I uploaded a page about Tony Caldeira on Monday 12th June 2023 following many requests from various sources including journalists seeking information. After several days of work, I published the page in good faith for it to be deleted by 64andtim after two hours and given the reason that Wikipedia is not a free web hosting service.

I would like to contest this deletion as I thought that the information I was providing was of value to Wikipedia and enhancing the platform with information. The page was launched for the right reasons. I am not interested in Wikipedia as a free web hosting page. This is the first time I have been an editor of a page for Wikipedia and would like to know what I need to do for the page to be published and accepted so that the information is able to be accessed by the public who may contribute to the page and use it as an information platform for Tony Caldeira. Please can you assist with this so I can get an information page launched as soon as possible? Thank you for your help with this.

Donnellyeditor (talk) 12:37, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletions are contested at deletion review. If you have a connection to Mr. Caldeira, that needs to be disclosed, see WP:COI and WP:PAID. Declaring a paid relationship is a terms of use requirement. 331dot (talk) 12:42, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. I am employed at Caldeira Ltd and I am Tony Caldeira's personal assistant. Please can you help with how I go about getting the information published? Thank you for your help. Donnellyeditor (talk) 12:48, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please also note that your user page is not the correct location for creating articles, you should start at WP:AFC in future. Theroadislong (talk) 12:48, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Donnellyeditor, it might be worth reading the following policies before you create another article for Tony Calderia.
- You have probably been asked by Tony Calderia to create an article about him. Read Wikipedia:When your boss tells you to edit Wikipedia to understand why this might not be the best idea.
- It is very possible that Tony Caldeira does not qualify for an article as he may not meet the stringent Wikipedia:Notability (people) policy.
- Please also note Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. Wikipedia is not a business directory, a promotional space, or an advertising platform.
- Wikipedia is only interested in what third party Wikipedia:Reliable sources have to say about the subject. Qcne (talk) 14:24, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Donnellyeditor. Your deleted draft was overtly promotional and poorly referenced. Please be aware that all promotional, advertising, reputation management and public relations activity is strictly forbidden on Wikipedia, and that editors are routinely blocked for such behavior. Comply immediately with the Paid contributions disclosure. This is mandatory and non-negotiable. Cullen328 (talk) 09:01, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bare and dead URLs[edit]

If a url is both dead and bare, and marked as bare, should you keep the bare url template, add a dead url template and remove the bare url template, or keep the {bare url}} and add {dead link}}? Thank you, History person 2 (talk) 12:46, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@History person 2: Hi there! If you can find an archived version, you could then add a full {{cite web}} template and remove the {{bare url}} template. If you cannot find an archived version, you could change the bare URL to something like [https://domain.com/blah/blah/blah domain.com], remove the {{bare url}} template and add a {{dead link}} template. GoingBatty (talk) 15:22, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you.

Good morning, is "Scipione Tadolini (1822–1893)" or "Scipione Tadolini (1822 – 1893)" correct? JackkBrown (talk) 16:18, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The former formatting (1822–1893) is correct in this situation. (If you're interested in a more detailed rundown on this topic, MOS:RANGE has fairly comprehensive guidance.) ModernDayTrilobite (talkcontribs) 16:46, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
