How would I go about citing a booklet for an album?[edit]

I was going to edit the Wikipedia article for Chisel and realized there was a detail that I added previously I wanted to cite. The only problem was that it was in the booklet for the 25th anniversary reissue of their album Set You Free. I was just wondering how I would correctly cite it. OurAfternoonMalady (talk) 01:18, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

See Template:Cite AV media notes. The instructions there include some examples. StarryGrandma (talk) 02:10, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

At the moment, the article has a 27000+ byte list detailing every winner of every competition type throughout every single year, which to me at least seems like too much detail. About a month ago I deleted the list, then was promptly reverted by a user with the same name as the company--who was then blocked for their username, only for another account to be created four hours later and redo the same edits.

I know that Wikipedia allows these companies to stay so long as they disclose their paid status (which, side note--why? They're only here to advertise their company, they have no interest in improving the encyclopedia, and does anyone seriously believe a PR manager will strive to give a fair and neutral description of their own products?...), but they haven't even disclosed that. If someone could handle that (and preferably trim the list and keep some eyes on the article as well), I would appreciate it. 2603:8001:4542:28FB:45C:3177:8F35:E638 (talk) 03:25, 20 January 2024 (UTC) (Send talk messages here instead)[reply]

If throwaway accounts are repeatedly filling this with unsourced trivia, perhaps the article should be semi-protected. (This would, of course, prevent edits by "IPs" as well. You may wish to get a username and use it.) The entire article seems to rest on virtually no disinterested sources. Somebody knowing a lot more than I do (a low bar!) about DJing championships should consider the notability of the subject and viability of an article. -- Hoary (talk) 05:34, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Where is the evidence of significant third-party sourcing necessary to establish notability? AndyTheGrump (talk) 06:33, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I thought a bit about nominating it for deletion last month, but I ultimately didn't because I can't access the two books that are cited, meaning I'd have a hard time writing a rationale against them. A five-minute Google News search is pulling up mostly press releases, and a couple of articles which are local or which are about people in the competition but not strictly the competition itself--which isn't very encouraging. Then again, that wasn't a fully in-depth search and I obviously know no more about DJing championships than Hoary does (though it does strike me as a bit of a... niche... field...).

If you all think semi-protecting the article is the way to go, so be it, but given the company now has a Wikipedia account I doubt that'll exactly stop much. 2603:8001:4542:28FB:45C:3177:8F35:E638 (talk) 08:24, 20 January 2024 (UTC) (Send talk messages here instead)[reply]
I have blocked Turntable Whisperer as a sockpuppet although they haven't edited in over five weeks. When you write given the company now has a Wikipedia account, please be aware that shared accounts including company accounts are contrary to policy, and I have blocked thousands of such accounts. Undeclared paid editors are routinely blocked as a matter of policy. Some declared paid editors actually comply with the conflict of interest guideline, and make useful contributions to the encyclopedia. Cullen328 (talk) 08:46, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But Cullen328, "DMC Canada"'s block was a username block; they were permitted to adopt a new username, which they did. I don't understand the block of "Turntable Whisperer". -- Hoary (talk) 13:09, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hoary, I did not notice that the previous block of DMC Canada was a soft block, so you are right that the second account was not actually a sockpuppet. On the other hand, the second account immediately resumed the same pattern of edit warring to add massive blocks of unreferenced promotional material to the same article, without making a paid editing disclosure. Therefore I have changed the block to a promotion/advertising only block. Cullen328 (talk) 21:35, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I would prefer that paid editing was forbidden, but I recognise that it would still go on surreptitiously, so I support the current arrangements, where it is permitted subject to controls. ColinFine (talk) 12:13, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

About Page Publishing[edit]

I have created a Wikipedia page- Corporate Identification Number, and i think it's reviewed but when i search this page through any search engine like Google Search it doesn't comes in search result, but when i search this page in Wikipedia search box then it comes.

Can anyone tell me this why does this happens and if there is any mistake in this page then kindly fix it.

Thanks. Sayeed2k (talk) 03:45, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:INDEXING. Wikipedia (and its editors) have no control over this. ayakanaa ( t · c ) 03:55, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sayeed2k, I have just checked Special:NewPagesFeed and the page has not yet been reviewed. Pages are not reviewed in any particular order. TSventon (talk) 04:06, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sayeed2k, to expand on Tsventon's answer: a new Wikipedia article is usually blocked from web crawlers (which index items for Google, Bing etc.) until either the New pages patrol has reviewed it or 90 days have elapsed. Once it has been reviewed and passed (or after 90 days) it is 'exposed' to the crawlers, which will take a little time (minutes to days?) to find and index the article. {The poster formerly known as 81.87.230.195} 176.24.47.60 (talk) 16:17, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Want to request English translation for Russian page.[edit]

I want to translate this page to English:

ru:Лукин, Сергей Иванович

Are there tools/users that can help with this? Sorry if this information can be found somewhere else, please direct me if there is. Thanks! 7austin (talk) 08:34, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. See WP:TRANSLATE for more information. I would point out that you will want to make sure that the topic meet the English Wikipedia notability guidelines- each language version has its own rules about what is acceptable content to them, and what is acceptable on the Russian Wikipedia is not necessarily acceptable here. 331dot (talk) 08:43, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Given that the Russian article ru:Лукин, Сергей Иванович has only one citation, and that is to an encyclopaedia (a tertiary source), a translation of it would not, as it stands, satisfy English Wikipedia's requirements for sourcing. I recommend you treat it as a new article, which begins by finding reliable published independent sources that have significant coverage of Lukin. (These do not have to be online, or in English). If you can find some, then write an article based on what these say - you might want to refer to the Russian, but any information in the Russian article which is not in the sources you find may not go into the English article, so there's probably not much point. Probably the main use of the Russian article will be suggesting to you where to look for sources.
If you cannot find several such sources, then I'm afraid that Lukin probably does not meet English Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and an article is not possible. ColinFine (talk) 12:21, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

link on my name[edit]

I would like to add a link on my name mentioned at So You Think You Can Dance info. How can I do that? Thanks a lot Miriam Larici 47.157.5.19 (talk) 08:35, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. There should only be a link about you if there is (or soon will be) a Wikipedia article about you. That can only happen if there is significant coverage of you in independent reliable sources showing how you are notable as Wikipedia defines the term.
Please be aware of the autobiography policy. 331dot (talk) 08:41, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Red link does not say that "soon" is a requirement. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:25, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

making a page[edit]

Hi. I was wondering how to make a new page. 2604:3D08:9482:1C00:992D:27FE:14B5:D469 (talk) 10:20, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Writing a new article is one of the most difficult tasks to perform on Wikipedia- we usually recommend that new users first gain experience and knowledge by editing existing articles in areas that interest them, to get a feel for what is looked for in article content.
IP users and new accounts cannot directly create articles; instead you may use the Article Wizard to create and submit a draft for review. Please first read Your First Article; you should also have gathered independent reliable sources with significant coverage of the topic you wish to write about, that can be summarized and establish that the topic is notable as Wikipedia defines the term. 331dot (talk) 10:26, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Password Reset[edit]

I've been trying to reset my password because the old one is accepted for some reason. I get no email in order to do that and I've tried several times. Thanks.dff 142.202.132.161 (talk) 10:53, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If your account has no email tied to it or that you can’t remember the email or have no access to the email, unfortunately you will have little recourse but to create a new account. See Help:Logging in#What if I forget my password? – robertsky (talk) 13:01, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

date of death named in my Wikipedia article but I'm alive- how do I fix this?[edit]

My WIkipedia article lists me as dead since 2000. Please tell me how to correct this and then expand the content of my entry. Thanks. Lizbeth Goodman (talk) 12:30, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Lizbeth Goodman Which article is this? The link please? – robertsky (talk) 12:33, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lizbeth Goodman shows that you are alive? Theroadislong (talk) 12:36, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
they meant google actually… the knowledge panel is showing them as dead. However, the corresponding wikidata item seems to be an amalgamation of different people or is of a different person, and listed them as dead. – robertsky (talk) 12:40, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The wikidata death date of 2000 is supported by this ref https://archives.trin.cam.ac.uk/index.php/goodman-lizbeth-fl-1993-2000-lecturer-in-theatre-studies . Not sure if it's the same person Bouzinac (talk) 12:59, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the other statements in wd item, it doesn’t seem to be the same person. It may take awhile to untangle the mishmash there. – robertsky (talk) 13:02, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This appears incorrect ("fl 1993-2000" refers to a range of time when something was true or took place, not a seven year lifespan). If so, it should be removed from Wikidata (and a separate wikidata item created for the other Lizbeth Goodman, if appropriate). I can't say how this will impact Google or other search results, however one could use "Send feedback" to directly inform the search provider. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 13:07, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the date if death from the Wikidata item. The reference is to a letter from Lizbeth Goodman to Peter Shaffer, which has been given the description "Goodman, Lizbeth (fl 1993-2000) lecturer in theatre studies". A Google search for Lizbeth Goodman lecturer in theatre studies finds quotes from some of Goodman's books saying that she was a lecturer in theatre studies when they were written. TSventon (talk) 14:29, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't fl supposed to be fl., particularly in the sense that that was the period of time the subject has been active? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:44, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Tenryuu, I think you are right per MOS:POINTS, but I was quoting Trinity College, Cambridge, who may have a different style guide or have made an error. TSventon (talk) 17:01, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Lizbeth Goodman: Please add any missing information and links to corresponding references to the Talk page of the article (not the article itself). Also, you might want to review these: WP:OWN and WP:COI to help ensure that your contributions fall within the guidelines. Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 13:15, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Lizbeth Goodman: While we do discourage you editing on the page about you, hopefully sorting this out will be less painful than Lal Bihari, who was declared dead by his government. In the unlikely scenario that this isn't sorted out in a couple of weeks (my guess is much less time), come back here and in that situation, there are ways to contact people employed by Wikipedia who can actually receive copies of documents. But let this effort go first, I'm feeling hopeful.Naraht (talk) 20:03, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This page doesn't have the template that marks the title in italics, how can I remove the italics from the title of this page? JackkBrown (talk) 14:54, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JackkBrown, Template:Infobox artwork should answer your question. TSventon (talk) 15:03, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JackkBrown, names of works of art should be italicized, as can be seen at Mona Lisa, an Italian work of art on display in Paris. Italicizaton of article titles can be accomplished with a template for that specific purpose, or by certain infobox templates that automatically italicize the title.Cullen328 (talk) 01:32, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Revdel on D.P.[edit]

Can someone clarify this reversion? 98𝚃𝙸𝙶𝙴𝚁𝙸𝚄𝚂 15:22, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The other editor is best placed to explain their edit, but Wikipedia:Revision deletion#Large-scale use says RevisionDelete is mainly intended for simple use and fairly recent material. Text that exists in numerous revisions (e.g. on busy pages) or which has been the subject of many others' comments may not be practical to redact. TSventon (talk) 15:30, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Amir Tsarfati / Behold Israel[edit]

Where did this website go??? Why is it not available? 68.6.232.201 (talk) 16:06, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The article Amir Tsarfati was deleted following a discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Amir Tsarfati. The reason was that it did not meet the requirements for a Wikipedia article at Wikipedia:Notability (people). TSventon (talk) 16:17, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Find link not working properly?[edit]

I've encountered this issue quite a bit these last few months. WP:Findlink can identify matches to my terms but most of the time I click them and they say the term cannot be found in article when they clearly can be. For example here there are many matches but only for a few of them does it work for me. Can anyone else try using this for CITIC Capital and see if it works normally for them? I already added this comment to the talk page of Findlink but Im now checking if this issue is limited to my account only. - Imcdc Contact 17:00, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Imcdc: Hi there! I can reproduce the issue you're having. Hopefully the developer will respond to your post at User talk:Edward/Find link. GoingBatty (talk) 18:51, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Circular categories[edit]

Category:Ethics is one of the main topics, however, it is a subcategory of Category:Justice, which itself is a deeper sub of Ethics. I have skimmed through WP:CAT but couldn't find anything about this kind of circulation. What needs to be done? BinaryBrainBug (talk) 18:27, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@BinaryBrainBug: Hi there! WP:CAT#Inappropriate categorization states "If categorization of any particular page is disputed, please discuss the categorization on the talk page of the page in question. ... Category talk pages are not always widely watched. Consider whether you can invite more potentially interested people to take part in a discussion, such as by discussing it at a relevant WikiProject, or at Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories" (which maybe should be Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Categories). GoingBatty (talk) 20:30, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@BinaryBrainBug: WP:SUBCAT says Category chains formed by parent–child relationships should never form closed loops;[1] that is, no category should be contained as a subcategory of one of its own subcategories.[2] However Category:Ethics is not currently a subcategory of Category:Justice. TSventon (talk) 21:07, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

References

  1. ^ This condition can be formulated in terms of graph theory as follows: the directed graph that has the categories as vertices and the parent-child relationships as edges should be acyclic.
  2. ^ There is an exception to this for maintenance purposes. For example, Category:Hidden categories is a direct subcategory of itself and of Category:Wikipedia extended-confirmed-protected pages and Category:Container categories, each of which is a direct subcategory of Category:Hidden categories.
@TSventon: I read wrong. The current path seems to be correct: Ethics/.../Justice/Law. Both Ethics and Law are main topics and I mixed them. Apologies. BinaryBrainBug (talk) 21:48, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reference add which is not available online[edit]

I want to add news to a article but online news is not available print news is available how to add? 45.124.7.168 (talk) 19:20, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can use Template:Cite news and leave the url field blank. There is a drop-down "cite" menu at the top of the editing box. TSventon (talk) 19:38, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In a case like this, it is especially important to provide as many details about the source as possible, specifically, the name of the publication, the date the article was published and its complete title, the city and country where it is published, the author's name if known, and the page number. Is there a tool/best practice to verify attendence at university for biographical articles?[edit]

Although I've edited lots of biographical articles, I've never really thought about how to verify a person's attendence at university (if applicable) until just now. I've been looking at Selima Hill. The existing reference seems OK, but I then wondered if there is a more generic way of checking university attendence? Thanks. Seaweed (talk) 20:50, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Seaweed, please read Wikipedia:ORIG. Also, I don't see why it is necessary if the existing reference is "OK". Best, @Avishai11 Avishai11 (talk) 23:36, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Seaweed, this will differ from university to university. Generally university records about living people will be private. For Cambridge you could look at https://www.alumni.cam.ac.uk/contact/about-past-students. TSventon (talk) 13:35, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
