Filming location and movie name please[edit]

I am not sure which section to put this query as it overlaps multiple genres. I am trying to find a location featured in a film and also the film. I thought it was dirty rotten scoundrels but when I looked this up it was not this movie as what I recall is much older. The location is similar, it may be set in the South of France or Italy and features a long set of stairs down from a Riviera type mansion to a small private beach. I recall that the story line was not a comedy but rather a drama, romance or tragedy. The lead actor, a David Niven type figure who goes for a swim and when he emerges from the water he puffs out his chest while he walks to get his towel. I know this is vague, but you guys are so good at this sort of thing. I would like to know. 1. What was the location of the mansion and 2. What was the name of the movie.
