Statement by Nicknack009[edit]

If the term "Republic of Ireland" is unacceptable, and "Ireland (state)" is ambiguous or confusing, what about "Ireland (republic)"? The state in question is officially named "Ireland", and is politically a republic (lower case r indicating that "republic" is here used as a generic term for a kind of politically organised state and not as the name or title of the state).

I would suggest:

  • "Ireland" as the article on the island (the island being primary as it pre-exists and contains the state), including its geography, natural history, and a certain amount of political history, for example describing the various states and political entities that have existed on the island, with links to the detailed articles on those states and entities.
  • "Ireland (republic)" as the article on the current 26-county state, with "Republic of Ireland" and "Ireland (state)" as redirects to it.
