Campus Ambassadors start closing gender gap[edit]

Encouraging women to participate in Wikipedia is one of the strategic priorities of the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikipedia has a large gap in contribution rates between men and women, with many more men contributing than women. But one area where the gender gap is closing is the Campus Ambassador program, where 46% of the Campus Ambassadors are women. A recent Wikimedia Foundation blog post highlights this fact, focusing on the contributions of five female Campus Ambassadors at Indiana University. Read the blog post.

Take a survey on barriers to participation[edit]

One priority for the Wikimedia Foundation is to encourage expert contribution and article quality assessment in Wikipedia. As part of this effort, we've developed a survey to analyze the barriers for subject matter expert contribution to Wikipedia. The Guardian reported last week on some of the issues experts face. If you are active in academia, please take the survey to let us know what you think.

Welcome to the spring assessment team[edit]

The article quality assessment team has started action for spring term. The team members include policy experts who have worked in policy for over 30 years, emeritus professors of public policy, several recent graduates, and some currently active in the public policy field, all with graduate degrees in public policy. These volunteers use their expertise to assess the changes to the articles students make. The assessment team quantifies the content improvement that everyone on this project works so hard to achieve; their work is an essential part of project reporting. Thanks new policy expert assessors for volunteering, and welcome to the project! Learn more about assessment plans.

Public Policy Initiative covered in university media[edit]

Student newspapers at James Madison University, New York University, Boston University, and Troy University have all covered the work students at their institutions are doing for the Public Policy Initiative recently, and the university news at James Madison has also published an article about the two professors using Wikipedia there. The articles contain quotes from students and faculty involved. See the full list of media coverage for links to these and other media articles about the Public Policy Initiative.
