Inactive?

Many of the project's functions have been automated. For example, weekly selections are chosen randomly from the project's Articles for improvement page and posted on the project's Schedule page by MusikBot. North America1000 18:54, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

  • User:MusikAnimal It seems to me that very few care about the nominations. Which is too bad. Perhaps a bot could notify editors involved in the project of new noninations.--BabbaQ (talk) 12:42, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
  • And as we have an member list it would be quite easy I assume to make a bot notify members when a new article is nominated. And as we don’t get too many noms it would not be a spamming situation.BabbaQ (talk) 12:46, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
  • @BabbaQ: I think that would be a good idea. I have the nominations page on my watchlist, but I don't always notice new edits among everything else. Clovermoss (talk) 21:19, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
  • @Clovermoss: Yes, I hope that this can be accomplished via a bot soon. I think it would definitely benefit the project. I have the same problem, I follow the nom page but miss it quite often amongst other articles and editing work etc.--BabbaQ (talk) 22:51, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
  • @BabbaQ: Maybe new talk page threads could be notifications as well? There aren't new posts here that often. I must admit that I only saw this just now because I was browsing after making another TAFI nomination. Any input would be appreciated. Another thing that might be helpful is an extended no response time for nominations before automatically being deemed unsuccessful due to inactivity. Clovermoss (talk) 23:01, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
  • @Clovermoss: Is there some way to get this to happen sooner than later. I wonder who to contact.BabbaQ (talk) 23:03, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
  • @BabbaQ: The only person I know that's super good with scripts would be Beland, but I'm not sure if they'd be able to help with this. Clovermoss (talk) 04:57, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
  • I'm afraid with work being busy I'm having trouble keeping up with the bot tasks I already have running. 8/ -- Beland (talk) 15:20, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Rattyhats (talk) 17:54, 13 April 2020 (UTC) Is this project active?

Not sure. I came here to add a few noms but I'm not an active participant. So it at least still has appeal, and the article of the week still gets some extra attention, even if it's just being updated by a bot. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 19:33, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Comment. If I'm not mistaken, this week's #28 TAFI (Russian Academy of Natural Sciences) has already appeared before on week #17. I believe nobody noticed this because of a possible archiving issue? As you can see in the schedule archives, week #17 is missing. I'm left wondering whether this should be left as is (letting editors give this TAFI a second go) or a new TAFI should take its place? Requested move 23 October 2020

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

– The article for improvement no longer changes every day, so it's past time we name the WikiProject to reflect its current operation. The natural title is currently occupied by the list page, so I propose we move that page to a subpage, which is the way we structure every other page besides the main page in this project anyways. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 00:44, 23 October 2020 (UTC) Relisted. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 07:55, 15 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Comment. First, apologies Sdkb, I see what happened now. There wasn't any further editing so the bot archived your request. Hopefully, the code above this comment will keep that from happening again. One thing though... the second new title above is a page with significant content and cannot be used as a new title unless it is also proposed to be renamed. So I have added to this proposal and placed a question mark in the |new3=? parameter. If you have a new title in mind, let me know and I'll replace the question mark with that. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 06:56, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
Oops, silly me for not noticing that title is taken. I've switched it to /Articles instead. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 08:13, 15 November 2020 (UTC)

Article nominations page

I noticed that there is a table of contents at the bottom of the article nominations section of the project. Why is that so? Is the table of contents required for this page? If such then perhaps it should be on the top.--Ankit (Talk with me) 11:25, 19 November 2020 (UTC)

Ankit2299, yeah, it was at both the top and the bottom; I removed it at the bottom. The list of categories also basically functions as yet another TOC, which is fairly redundant, so I may remove it, too. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 04:45, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Interest in noms

I sadly see that less and less editors involved in this project are interested in reviewing and !voting on nominated articles. My suggestion would be that every new nom is sent to each project members talk page via a bot. We have relatively few noms. So getting a notice of a new nomination would benefit the project. Other suggestions or ideas are welcome.BabbaQ (talk) 20:52, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Strong Support- @BabbaQ: I definitely see the merit in your proposal, this project currently has 176 active members, we could definitely use their help. And I think that it should be the active members that be pinged.--Ankit (Talk with me) 21:47, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Personally, the reason I don't follow the nominations page on my watchlist is that I don't want to be spammed by MusikBot constantly rotating all the entries. It'd be easier on my watchlist if we turned off the rotating, but even then, I'd prefer to be notified once for a new candidate rather than for every !vote. Still, I wouldn't personally sign up for talk page messages, since there'd be too many.
Broadly, I very much agree that this project could use some revival. We've taken care of the TAFI->AFI cleanup, which will help with branding, but I think we need something more. Sending out a mass-message to participants about a relaunch might give us a participation boost, but in order for it to be sustained, I think people need to feel that the project has a community/collaborative presence. To that end, I'd suggest having a bot automatically create a talk page section for each AFI as a place for us to list out the article's problems and discuss how to fix them. The other thing that I think is missing is a way to measure (and derive satisfaction from) the project's impact, the same way e.g. GAN can say "we promoted 47 pages this month!" To address that, I think it might be better to stop having the AFI change automatically every week, and instead make it something where we all work on a page for however long we feel is needed to fix it up, and then declare it improved and move to the next. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 05:58, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

MusikBot and nominations

@MusikAnimal: It looks like the bot has stopped rotating nominations and archiving/moving ones once they've been approved or rejected. I assume this is probably another bit of fallout from the move; would you be able to look into it? The lack of rotating I actually appreciate since it makes the page impossible to watchlist, but the archiving/moving it would be nice to have back. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 00:48, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

@Sdkb: Whoops, sorry about that. I forgot the on-wiki config also needed to be updated. We can turn off the rotation feature via the config, too, if we want. However I realize now it's not marking the edits as bot edits, which can be filtered out of your watchlist. So that is also an option. MusikAnimal talk 02:44, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

Project participation

While trying to fix up some of our archives, I just made the dispiriting discovery that Pig Latin, which was just added to the AFI list (for plenty good reason) has appeared on AFI before...twice...including last year. Our participation level is definitely not yet where I'd like it to be. Ideally, any article that appears as the weekly selection should receive a flood of activity that results in some noticeably dramatic changes. Hopefully someday we'll get to that point. In the meantime, it seems we're doing fine on the having-enough-nominations front, but if we ever start running low, all we need to do is dip into our archives and resurface some of our past selections. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 01:20, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Weekly selection watchlist notifications?

Looking through the code, it seems there isn't any way to be notified on your watchlist when there's a new selection, just the talk page method. Some people (myself included) may not want all the talk page notifications, so should we set this up somehow? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 21:26, 6 June 2021 (UTC)

Strike Lumbersexual

Lumbersexual is listed on the Articles for improvement page, but is a redirect to Lumberjack#Aesthetic, following a deletion discussion some years ago. It would seem prudent to strike it from the list, unless there are any objections? RoanokeVirginia (talk) 17:34, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
