Insignia

The 18th Infantry Division (insignia pictured) of the British Army fought briefly in the Malayan campaign of the Second World War. It was formed in September 1939 from a cadre of the Territorial Army's 54th (East Anglian) Infantry Division, with men from Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire. It was based in Britain from 1939 to 1941. En route to Egypt to prepare for Operation Crusader in December 1941, the division was diverted to India when Japan entered the war. Its 53rd Brigade was sent to Singapore and became embroiled in the Battle of Muar, then withdrew to Singapore Island. In February the entire division was broken up and deployed piecemeal during the Battle of Singapore. Regrouping for a final stand just outside the city, it repulsed several Japanese attacks before surrendering. Over one-third of the division's personnel died in captivity, including divisional commander Major-General Merton Beckwith-Smith. (Full article...)
