TFA blurb review[edit]

The black-necked grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) is in the grebe family of water birds. During the breeding season, the head, neck, and breast are dark, with some yellow behind the eyes; the flanks are tawny rufous to maroon-chestnut, and the abdomen is white. The non-breeding bird has greyish flanks and no yellow feathers. This species is present in parts of Africa, Eurasia, and the Americas. It catches insects on the surface of the water, in flight, or occasionally on foliage, and dives to catch crustaceans, molluscs, tadpoles, and small frogs and fish. It makes a floating cup nest on an open lake, in which three or four eggs hatch after a 21-day incubation period. After about 10 days, the parents divide the brood between themselves, and after roughly 10 more days, the chicks become independent. The black-necked grebe travels as far as 6,000 kilometres (3,700 mi) during migration, then becomes flightless for two months while moulting. It is likely the most numerous grebe in the world. RileyBugz and Kostas20142 (and anyone else interested): thoughts and edits are welcome. This is the last batch of blurbs for older FACs for a while. - Dank (push to talk) 17:07, 21 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Dank: The description of the bird leaves out the non-breeding plumage; it might make it a bit long, but I think switching from "The head, neck, and breast are coloured black to blackish brown, the flanks are tawny rufous to maroon-chestnut, and the abdomen is white." to "During the breeding season, the head, neck, and breast are dark, with the exception of yellow-coloured feathers behind the eyes, the flanks are tawny rufous to maroon-chestnut, and the abdomen is white. The non-breeding bird does not have yellowish ear tufts, and has greyish flanks." would be good. I also copyedited the lead a bit. Thank you for doing the blurb! Oops, I did make a hash of that description. I think I can say what you're suggesting and shorten it a little bit, and that will fit, I'll give it a try. - Dank (push to talk) 00:09, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, looks great (though I did make a few more edits to include "the" before "breeding season" and cut down on space). Thank you! RileyBugz私に叫ぼう私の編集 20:22, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
